Virgil usually felt relief flood through him after the school bell rang out through the school, but for him it just meant an extra hour while everyone went to go home due to the tutoring lessons he was being given by a science teacher. He was failing pretty badly, so when the teacher offered to help, he jumped onto it, not only because he wanted to do well, but because said science teacher was his favourite teacher in the entire school, as he was the only one to accept him for who he was. Aka, being gay.
After his friends - Patton and Roman - quickly said their goodbyes, he ventured down the hallway that was quickly evacuated towards the classroom occupied by the teacher - Mr. Sanders. Or Logan, as he lets Virgil call him.
Standing in the doorway, Virgil knocked on the wood, Logan's head perking up from his computer. "Virgil, come in" He he spoke, quickly doing a last few touches for tomorrow's work. Closing the door Virgil went to the front desk, slumping on the chair in the middle and taking out his phone to scroll through tumblr as he waited for Logan to be ready.
The science teacher arose from his chair only a few minutes later, standing opposite Virgil who had his eyes glued to his phone. Logan watched how his bangs slowly fell over his eyes, his head being held up by his arm covered in little doodles he drew on throughout the school day. Usually his jacket sleeves were pulled up all the day due to the little scars across his skin, but with the help of Logan, he soon stopped and his confidence was brought up, which made Logan smile.
Grabbing a chair, Logan sat down, catching the students attention. "What would you like to start on?" Logan questioned, flicking through his science book. Virgil shrugged, leaning back against the plastic chair.
"How to fall asleep but look like you're awake" Virgil replied, snorting quietly as Logan rose an eyebrow, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Do not worry, you will learn that in collage" Logan watched Virgil let out a chuckle, covering his mouth afterwards. Although it was wrong, Logan thought of it as cute.
For the next hour Logan explained to him things he didn't understand, and in the end, he seemed to improve but only a little, which was to be expected. "This is so much easier with you!" Virgil exclaimed, gazing over the words Logan wrote on his page. "My chemistry teacher is shit" Logan snorted, standing up and walking to his desk.
"I do agree with you there. I desire to teach you more often, but my class is top set. I apologise about that" Virgil shook his head, packing away his stuff and swinging his bag over his shoulder. "Nah, it's fine" he shrugged, walking to the door with the teacher. "Besides, your class is full of snobby kids" they both chuckled, Virgil watching him lock the door before the two walked down the hallway together.
"Again, I concur with you, but they do stay silent, which is relieving" Logan admitted, holding open the door for his student. Virgil pondered what it would be like to be in a quiet classroom, but to him it seems like an impossible dream.
"Same time tomorrow?" Logan offered, standing beside his car. "Yup, see ya, nerd" Virgil did a two finger salute, smirking and turning around to walk home. Shaking his head, Logan didn't know why he let Virgil joke around with him like he did, was it because Virgil was his favourite student? Was it because he sometimes saw Virgil as a friend? Or was it...something more?
Shaking his head, Logan quickly slid into his car, driving home with the radio playing softly in the background.
The next day, Virgil sat in biology, bored out of his mind. At least in this science he wasn't failing, but it was definitely one of his least favourite sciences, and as a double negative, it was one of the classes that held the worse students. He assumed most of them couldn't even spell worse without giving up halfway through.
His attention was caught after a paper ball hit the back of his head. Turning around, he glared at the group of boys who only laughed and silently taunted him, telling him to read what the paper said.
Bending down, he yelped as he suddenly fell to the ground, the classroom erupting into laughter. Standing up, Virgil grasped the paper ball in his hand, ready to through it back when the teacher stood in front of him, eyebrow risen.
"Out of the class, now" tending his jaw, Virgil grabbed up his bag and gave the boys the middle finger, adrenaline coursing through him as his breathing became irregular. Bring centre of attention was never his thing, so being publicly embarrassed could cause him a panic attack. He let himself be led down the hallway, the teacher stopping outside of Logan's classroom.
"You can stay in here ten minutes during lunch for disturbing my class" she quipped, leaving him in the hallway while she spoke to Logan. Leaning on the wall, he closed his eyes, reciting numbers - his breathing technique - in his head to help calm himself down, rubbing his sweaty palms against his jeans as his legs shook ever so slightly.
"Virgil?"
Snapping his head up, he caught Logan's eyes, watching concern float through them.
"This was what he was going to throw. Wouldn't be a surprise if it had some horrid comment inside, will he be okay in your class?" Logan nodded at the teacher, not giving her any attention as he flattened out the paper, reading it over hurriedly. Virgil clenched his hands, watching Logan's eyes harden as they flicked over towards the teacher who was giving Virgil an unimpressed look.
"It seems Virgil would be better off in my class" Logan commented, gesturing to him to go inside. Nodding quickly, the anxious student shuffled in, relieved to see no one stared at him and in fact were silently getting on with their work. Sitting at the back, he pulled out his phone under the table, distracting himself from the thoughts swirling in his mind about what could've been written on that paper.
Obviously it was bad, it made Logan furious, but it seemed as the biology teacher couldn't notice that.
The next half an hour went by smoothly, Virgil able to calm down, and ignore the work set for him, instead keeping his attention on his phone. Logan didn't seem to mind, he was more focused on his current class, anyway.
Virgil didn't move after the bell rang, he instead waited in silence until everyone left, leaving Logan and him alone. "What did the note say?" The curious student asked, walking up to Logan's desk. The teacher placed the pile of books down, standing opposite his student, his desk being the only thing separating them.
"It would be best to not tell you" Logan replied, jaw tense. Virgil nodded slowly, ducking his head. It was probably something about his sexuality, it was the thing he was mainly bullied for. "I do wish some teachers would take their heads out of their ass" Logan muttered, sitting down on his chair.
Virgil rose an eyebrow, smirking in amusement. "You would think some people would at least try and accept..." Logan carried on muttering to himself, angrily marking students work. Shaking his head, Virgil softly said goodbye and left the classroom, quietly closing the door behind him.
"You calmed down?" Virgil smirked from the doorway, it now being after school. Logan stood up after picking up a pen, smiling as a gesture for him to walk in, which he did. "I suppose. Have you received any more harassment?"
"I'm fine" Virgil dismissed, slouching in the chair he sat upon last tutoring lesson. Nodding, Logan sat opposite him again, opening up his chemistry book to the page they last worked on.
Virgil's eyes drifted to his hand, noticing it was ring-less. "You're not married?" Virgil questioned, genuinely surprised. Logan rose an eyebrow, staring at him for a few seconds before glancing down at his hand. "I am aware" sighing, Virgil rolled his eyes and leaned closer to him, unknowingly doing something to the teacher who held his composure.
"Waiting to propose?"
"Propose to who? Unless I am in a relationship I do not know about" Logan replied a little jokingly, smiling slightly at the small laugh that escaped from Virgil. The student sighed out, chuckling softly as his eyes trailed subtly down his body towards the work. "Huh, I didn't think you'd be single"
"Why is that?" Logan pressed, catching his eye.
A light blush coated Virgil's cheek, the student shrugged, suddenly flustered.
"W-well...I don't know" he ducked his head, clearing his throat. Logan chuckled quietly, deciding to let it go and finally start with the work. Like yesterday, they left the building together after the hour, the light taps of rain sprinkling on them. "Hm" Logan hummed, staring up at the dark clouds overhead.
"I do not want you walking in the rain" Logan turned to look at Virgil who paused on the path, hood already covering his head. "I'll be fine, I might catch a cold and stay home" he joked, but if Logan offers he wouldn't pass up the opportunity to get a lift home.
Logan looked up as the rain started to become heavier. Glancing around, he called for Virgil to get in, which the grateful student did quickly, closing the door and relaxing against the comfortable leather. Logan started the car, turning on the heater hurriedly. Smiling, Virgil closed his eyes and enjoyed the short car trip, sometimes peeking his eyes open to sneak a glance at the teacher who sat straight in his seat, solely focused on the road.
Turning back forward, Virgil noticed how clean the car was. He either treasured the car, or was a clean person. Sitting up, Virgil reached for a book placed in the pocket on the car door, flicking through the pages. "Do not bend the pages" Logan commented, turning down a street. Virgil snorted, reading the first page quietly.
"Down there" Virgil pointed to an empty street, focusing back on the book afterwards. Nodding, Logan slowly drove down, stopping beside the house Virgil said to be his own. A normal, two story house with a black car parked outside. "Thanks..." Virgil drifted, sending his teacher a small smile.
"It was my pleasure, hurry inside" nodding, Virgil left the car and like Logan said hurried inside, quickly closing the door after him. He heard his parents talking in the living room, so he dashed upstairs to his room where he looked out his window, almost missing Logan's car before it turned down the street.
His heart thudded against his chest, eyes widening at the realisation he was holding something in his hand. Looking down, he gasped, it was his book!
Well...he wouldn't mind if Virgil read it, would he?
Laying comfortably on his bed, he spent his evening completely focused on the book, accidentally missing out on dinner.
Who knew Logan had such good book taste.
In school, Virgil hurried down the hallway, book grasped tightly in his hand. He wanted to give it to Logan as soon as he could so he wouldn't think Virgil stole it purposely.
"What's this?" In a flash, the book was grabbed out of his hand, being held in the air by one of the many bullies in the school. "A book? Who reads anymore" he chuckled, staring at Virgil as if he was a waste of space. "Give it back" Virgil demanded nervously, trying his best to stay confident even though he wanted to run and hide.
The boy laughed, opening the book harshly, making Virgil wince.
A loud rip made Virgil's eyes widen. The boy held the paper he ripped out with a smirk, waving it in Virgil's face. Glaring, Virgil jumped up to try and grab it back, but the boy just pinned him against the locker, Virgil freezing his movements.
"I would advise you to let him go"
"Oh yeah?" The boy turned to the voice, mouth zipping shut at the sight of Logan.
"Drop him, or I will not allow you to set foot in this school again. And, to my knowledge, this is the only school you are not banned from, correct?" Logan smirked, watching the boy huff and drop Virgil to the ground, throwing the book at his face. Smirk dropping, Logan stood in his face, a few inches taller than the idiot.
"I am not afraid to go to jail from hitting a child" he spoke harshly, ordering the boy away with his eyes.
Once he turned the corner, Logan bent down to help Virgil up, leading him to his classroom and away from other students gazes. "Are you alright?" Logan questioned as soon as he closed the door.
"Y-Yeah...but...your book" Virgil held it to him, Logan taking it carefully. Even if he was enraged, he didn't show it to Virgil, instead set the book aside and closely examined his face, eyes lingering on his parted lips for a few seconds longer. "I hope to see you after school" Logan spoke just before he left the class. Virgil rested his hand on the doorknob, nodding slowly.
"You will..."
"Mr. Sanders, he told me you threatened him"
Virgil paused outside of Logan's classroom, peeking in to see the headteacher standing in front of Logan who towered the short man. "And you trust his statement over mine?" He retorted, crossing his arms and staring down at him. "The cameras show you got in his face"
"The camera also shows him pinning a helpless student against the locker. But, did you not pay attention? Or, was it your homophobia that made you pass over it like it was nothing?" Logan watched the headteacher tense, eyes hardening as he lifted an arm to point up at Logan's face intimidatingly. "I am not homophobic. And that student provoked him"
"How? By walking down the hallway?" Logan defended.
"I will not hesitate to fire you, Sanders"
"And I will not hesitate to get this school shut down due to the blatant bullying Virgil receives from not only students but teachers combined. If you leave my classroom now, I will let this go, but let Virgil get bullied one more time and you will face the consequences" Logan turned away and sat behind his desk, glaring at the headteacher until he huffed and left the class, Virgil quickly hiding behind the door so he wouldn't see him.
"Eavesdropping is rude, Virgil" Logan spoke up, glancing at the boy who peered round the door, looking sheepish. "Sorry..." he murmured, shuffling inside and playing with his sleeves. "Will I get you fired...?" He questioned slowly, bangs covering his worried eyes. Logan sighed, brushing his own hair back before walking over to Virgil.
"No, this is not your fault" Logan quickly dismissed, placing his hand on his back and leading him to sit at his desk, bringing up a game on his computer based around chemistry. "I will be back shortly" Logan stared at his face for any discomfort about being left alone, once seeing none, he sent Virgil a small reassuring smile before leaving the classroom.
Virgil sighed, turning to the game. He was grateful Logan stuck up for him all the time, but at the cost of his job? It made Virgil think if Logan cared more about him than his job, but he quickly shook his head, no one cared about him, not even his parents. Logan probably just hated bullying, he'd do it for anyone.
Forcing his brain to focus on the game, nearly the entire hour passed before Logan returned, closing the door behind him. "How are you getting on?" The teacher caught his attention. "Oh..." Virgil quickly changed tabs from tumblr back to the game, showing Logan he completed it. "I trust you did not use Google" Logan rose his eyebrow, Virgil hid a grin behind his sleeve, mumbling a quiet no.
"Would you like me to drive you home again?" Logan offered, picking up his jacket. Virgil glanced outside, noticing how it wasn't raining. His heart warmed, and he quickly agreed, getting into his comfortable car once they reached it.
"Sorry about your book" Virgil broke the silence, staring at it as it lay on the dashboard. "Do not apologise, it was not your fault"
"I didn't mean to take it home, it was interesting, though" Virgil commented, shrugging lightly and staring out the window. "You read it?" Logan asked, trying to hide the surprise in his voice. Virgil snorted, sliding down the chair a bit. "Yeah..." he drifted, his eyes moving from the window and slowly down to his hand that rested on the gearshift.
Biting his lip, Virgil sat up and averted his eyes, softly placing his own hand on Logan's, blushing as he did. The teacher didn't pull away, to Virgil's relief, instead he smiled at his hand, gazing back towards the road. The two stayed silent, Logan parking outside of his house. Before Virgil could leave, Logan intertwined his hand with Virgil's, squeezing it gently.
Virgil heart thudded rapidly, goosebumps rising across his skin. Feeling a little more confident, Logan leaned over and kissed his cheek, watching for his reaction, quickly smirking at the blush that coated his cheeks.
"I shall see you tomorrow, Virgil" Logan whispered, letting go of his hand.
Virgil sent him a smile.
"I can't wait..."
