"Are you sure you want to go there?"
Virgil asked, staring at his friend with uncertainty. His friend, named Roman, looked back with a grin, nudging his boyfriend who sighed, placing down his mug of coffee.
"Yes, Virgil, it will be fun" he spoke robotically, as if Roman had scripted it earlier. Rolling his eyes, Virgil leaned back in the chair he sat on, currently at Roman and Logan's house as they asked him to hang out. He wouldn't of come over if he knew they wanted to go...there...well, if Roman wanted to, Logan was just coming along to make sure Roman didn't kill himself - accidentally.
Ever since he was a kid Virgil had it drilled into his head "that place" they were planning to go to today isn't safe at all, and should not be entered under any circumstances. The large, deep, mud filled moat that surrounded this "place" was filled with bugs and diseases, set one foot in and it could kill you in under a week. If you get passed this mud moat, you'd get into the sort of island inside, full of dead trees, grassless dried dirt, branches and rubble scattered across it.
Once there, you must fend for yourself as the bugs and dangerous animals came out to play, ready to hunt their pray, which is you.
Blinking back into reality, Virgil truly wondered why the hell Roman would ever want to even be in a miles radius of the place, but he looked determined as he packed his bag full of stuff ready to keep them all protected, and once he had his mind set on something, it was near impossible to stop him.
So, Virgil and Logan got into his car, and Roman set off down the street, talking a mile a minute about how excited he was to finally see why the whole world wants to keep people away from this place.
The place didn't even have any myths or legends based around it! It was literally a dump, sitting there for years and years to come, but no, Roman has to think there's something more.
"This isn't a good idea..." Virgil finally spoke up after they passed the last few houses in town, driving alone the empty road towards their destination.
"I solely agree with Virgil, Roman. Although I do not want you hurt - as that is the only reason I am here - I do hope you are not thinking of even attempting to step foot in that place. You do understand this is a suicide mission, correct?"
Roman huffed, not letting what his boyfriend and friend were saying let him down. Gripping the wheel tighter, he shrugged lightly, smirking in delight.
"Where is your sense of adventure!"
"Anywhere but that place!" Virgil replied, flopping against the seat and crossing his arms. Him and Logan both being in the back, the more logical man glanced towards him, silently questioning what they should do.
He only shrugged, gesturing towards Roman and twirling a finger beside his head, indicating he was a complete idiot.
But, amongst their protests and Roman's quips against them, they didn't realise the "place" was in sight. Once Roman parked the car, Logan and Virgil's hearts dropped.
Much as pictures depicted, the place was truly horrifying, a place no one, not even the most insane human would ever go to.
Virgil was sure people wouldn't even go there in a zombie apocalypse, even if that was the only place zombies didn't exist!
Roman grinned giddily, making a little excited noise before grabbing his bag and jumping out. Sighing, Logan followed suit, watching his stupid yet determined boyfriend grab a folded bridge type thing, ready to lie across the moat to get over.
"Roman, think about this..." Logan told him, placing a hand on his forearm and staring into his eyes.
Roman smiled, kissing his lips sweetly. "I have, and this is what I want to do"
Closing the trunk, he ventured across the abandoned field towards the large ground of dead, surrounded by the moat of death.
"Are you alright?" Logan asked, glancing at his friend who was stricken with panic and fear. Nodding and gulping, he and Logan followed after the man who obviously didn't understand the dangers of what he was about to do.
"What are you trying to accomplish?" Virgil spoke a little harshly, watching Roman lay down his bag and unfold the bridge. Ignoring him, Roman pushed it across the mud, smiling as it reached across to the other side.
"Roman, I'm serious. Answer me" Virgil demanded, glaring at his friend who stood up, swinging his bag onto his back. "I found a book" he explained, catching their attention. "It said this place was something more than people know it to be! It explained a story of four boys bullying a younger kid to come here and go over!" He pointed towards the dead land, his eyes showing how much he actually believed the story.
"Roman-" Logan tried but his boyfriend carried on.
"They even dragged the younger boy here and chased him with sticks, he had no where to go but over there! So, he trudged through the mud filled moat and got to the other side! But..." he drifted, a sense of adventure gleaming in his bright eyes. "As soon as he did, the bullies forgot why they were there, why they were holding sticks, they even forgot the younger boy existed!"
Logan crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes in disbelief about how his boyfriend could believe in such a stupid, obviously made up story. "Roman, if this is some sort of joke, please end it now. This is not funny! We are standing next to a death trap, and do not even try and convince me that story is r-....Roman" he drifted, stating his name warningly as he took a step onto the bridge.
With his eyes gleaming, Roman fully stood on the bridge, staring at their worried crossed with angry expressions.
"If you want to stop me..." he drifted, taking a step back.
"You have to catch me!"
Turning around, he got ready to run across the bridge. Groaning, Logan was first to rush after, Virgil quickly following suit, running across the bridge behind a shouting Logan and Roman.
The more adventurous man made it over first, but Logan crashed into the back of him, making Virgil land on them against the ground. They all groaned, rolling off of each other.
Roman sat up, staring at the scenery behind Logan and Virgil who both yelled at how much of an idiot he was at him.
His mouth fell open, eyes widening in shock, crawling back a bit as he gazed across the land that laid before him.
The story was right...
"Roman!"
"Look" he replied quietly, his breath taken away.
As they stopped yelling, the two finally looked around, first noticing how the moat they just crossed was now filled with clear, running water. Then, the ground below them, seeing the long, soft stems of grass swaying around their legs.
"What the fuck..." they both whispered at the same time, spinning around to stare at the once dead land now a sort of...utopia...what they would imagine heaven looked like...
Speechless, Logan and Virgil stood silently in shock, unmoving as their brain tried to comprehend the...magic that was this land. Roman was first to stand up, laying down his bag he grinned, dragging his hand across the grass and breathing in the purest oxygen he's ever breathed in in his life.
In the distance stood two, tall and proud mountains, one taller than the other, yielding flowers he's never even seen before, with tall trees that dragged from different shades of green, and the most glorious, pinkest shade of cherry blossom tree standing tall and proud beside the bigger mountain. And sitting under it, leaning against the trunk, was a man who hadn't noticed them yet, wearing trousers that reached up his shins, a blue shirt way too small for him, and a soft smile across his lips.
Roman turned to his boyfriend and friend, smirking as they slowly turned to him.
"An apology would he nice" he quipped, laughing as Logan nearly fainted. As Logan rambled on about how this was impossible, Roman stood in front of Virgil, gently moving his bangs back. "Breathe, Virgil" he whispered softly, rubbing his arm, "the air is nice..." he added, letting him slowly calm down, leaning into his body as his eyes traveled across the land once more.
Turning around, he looked across the moat at the land surrounding it, it was the exact same as before they crossed, nothing changed, he could even see Roman's car in the distance.
"How is this...here...this can't be real" he murmured, yelping as Roman pinched his arm. "It's as real as it gets! And see that man" he pointed towards the cherry blossom, "I think it's the boy who was bullied" wriggling his eyebrows, he dashed across the land of the perfect shade of green, gaining the man's attention who gasped upon seeing a human, slowly standing up.
Roman paused just before the shade from the cherry blossom, tilting his head in a sort of questioning way, wondering if it was okay to come closer.
Not quite believing the sight, the man slowly walked closer, reaching up to touch the side of Roman's face, haven't seeing a human in years.
"Greetings. I'm Roman" he introduced, bowing a little as the man took a step back. "Uh...uh..." the man stammered, a few animals walking up beside his feet, tilting their heads curiously up at Roman who smiled down at them, finding them the most cutest animals he's ever seen.
"This is him...from your story" Logan suddenly spoke up, standing beside Roman with a still shaky Virgil behind. "Yep!" Roman grinned, "What's your name?"
The man opened and closed his mouth, locking eyes with the boy dressed in dark behind Logan, breath catching in his throat. "I...Er..p...Patton" he eventually spoke up, turning back to the other two. "I'm Patton..." suddenly, after his brain comprehended the fact that they were here, standing with him, he quickly yelled out, dashing up to them.
"Why are you here?! You shouldn't be here! Why did you even come here?! Have you not heard his dangerous this place is?!" Patton screeched out, making the three jump back in surprise at his outburst.
"We understand the dangers...well...understood, but this place is not dangerous at all. Impossible, but not dangerous" Logan watched Patton shake his head, gesturing around.
"It's more dangerous then it looks from the outside...it reels you in, keeps you here, makes you not want to leave!" He rambled, running a hand through his hair. "It makes you want to stay forever, it makes you think this is the place you should live in! That this place is...is or sort of heaven! A safe place! It's not...you need to go before it does the same to you! Please leave now!" Patton begged, pushing them back across the grass, the animals staying back and watching.
"Patton...calm down" Roman tried to reason but the man shook his head, wailing for them to leave, not wanting them to have the same faint as he did. Glancing at them all, he noticed how the one dressed in darker clothes suddenly began to smile softly, staring around dreamily, walking away from them all.
"No..." Patton whispered, sprinting to stand in front of him, shaking his shoulders. "Snap out of it Kiddo! This place isn't what you think!"
Shaking his head, Virgil stared at Patton, stepping out of his grip. "What..." he muttered, going in and out of the trance, wanting to leave but a second later wanting to stay.
Patton looked behind and saw Roman and Logan going through the same thing. Groaning, Patton rushed towards where they came in, grabbing the bag that was left there and looking around, pulling out a rope he found at the bottom. This should work, he thought, running back and quickly tying the rope around them all, dragging them easily as they stared around like a child in a candy store, completely unfazed by the fact they were dragged across the land.
Standing by the bridge, Patton looked at the land on the other side. He couldn't go back...not after being here for so long. He knew that was the place making him think that, but instead of trying to ignore it, he let it power him to push them across the bridge, watching them land on the other side in a heap.
"Uh.." Logan slowly sat up, pushing the rope away as his eyes lingered on the now dead land before him. "What was that? Why are we here? Roman!" Roman sat up too, confused and discombobulated. He didn't even remember why he wanted to come here, or why they had a rope around them...
"Virgil?" The last man slowly opened his eyes, flicking them between the two before staring straight ahead, focusing on the old, cherry tree beside the mountain, as if trying to remember a dream that was slowly fading from his mind.
Closing his eyes, a pair of bright, brown eyes appeared in his mind, cute, adorable eyes framed by a pair of small glasses, seemingly made for a child but on a man's face. Suddenly, the eyes were attached to half a face, with brown hair that gently rested against the forehead, and now a small, adorable smile.
Gasping, his eyes shot open.
"Patton!" He yelled, staring back up at the dead land, the man suddenly appearing across the bridge, eyes locked with his own.
"Patton? Who's Patton?" Roman asked, watching as he stood up and waited by the end of the bridge.
"Virgil, do not get too close-"
"Shut up!" He yelled at them, narrowing his eyes determinedly at Patton who didn't move.
"Patton, you know what this place does to you, you said it yourself, come here...you can come with us, you can live a normal life, you don't have to be trapped there anymore" he encouraged, outstretching his arm.
Logan and Roman watched him bewildered.
Patton still didn't move, but his bottom lip quivered.
"Please, I remembered you, they didn't, that must mean something...right?"
Patton glanced behind him, staring at the land that tried to draw him in.
"Look at me! It's trapping you, you're stronger than it, remember life before you were trapped in there, just cross the bridge...you can live life free again" Virgil coaxed.
Turning back to him, Patton stepped onto the bridge, a strong gust of wind blowing against him, his hair whipping back, but all he had to do was stare at Virgil and he slowly crossed over, becoming visible for Roman and Logan as soon as he stepped onto the field, making the two gasp in sudden remembrance.
Falling into his arms, Virgil hugged him tightly, letting the man cry onto his shoulder.
"You're free" Virgil whispered, finally seeing the reason why Roman wanted to so badly come here in the first place.
To save the bullied boy.
