Patton looked down at the piece of crumpled paper in his hands, reading over the address for what feels like the hundredth time. He wanted to make sure the address was right, as he just wanted to get into bed and sleep. He sighed, tugging his suitcase closer as he wheeled it up the path to the apartment building, scanning the buttons on the side until he saw the apartment number he'd be staying in.
He knew three other people would be living there, which is fine, he loved company, better than being alone like he once was.
Adjusting his backpack on his shoulders, he pressed the button and waited.
"Greetings~!" A loud, vivacious voice called through the speaker. Patton let out a weak chuckle as he heard it.
"Hey" he replied softly, "I'm Patton...your new roommate?" He waited a few seconds, chewing his lip nervously. Had he pressed the wrong button? Did they forget? He quickly read the address once more, jumping as the same voice called loudly through the speaker again.
"You're here! Finally, come on through!"
A buzz sounded along with the door unlocking. Patton stood frozen for a few seconds, but quickly snapped back into reality and grabbed his suitcase, walking in. He noticed the ground floor was empty, but saw where he would gather mail from. Walking towards the elevator his stomach dropped with nerves.
He didn't really know anything about the people he'd be living with, apart from the fact one was named Logan and they were all male. He didn't know if they young, old, criminals, homophobic, nice, horrible...he just agreed instantly to moving in with them...shaking his head, he realised every time people at school and home called him an idiot they were telling the truth.
Reaching the floor, he padded along the carpeted ground, ending up at the door to his new place to live for awhile. Until they kick him out because they can't handle how annoying he is.
Sighing out, Patton knocked on the door, surprised at how quickly it was opened, even more surprised as two strong arms wrapped around his waist, pulling up from the ground and into a tight hug. Shell shocked, he noticed two men standing in the doorway, shaking their heads. "Princey, you're scaring the shit out of him!" One man said, wearing noticeably dark makeup around his eyes. Roman chuckled, placing Patton down with a wide grin.
"My apologies" he held Pattons hand and bowed down, kissing the back of it. Patton blushed, mind whirling, was this man always flirtatious?! If so, Patton didn't think he could handle it.
"Greetings, I'm Roman, people call me Princey" he introduced himself with a sharp smirk. "Only I call you Princey, nimrod" the same man as before spoke, rolling his eyes.
"That right there is my best friend Virgil! He's a little emo nightmare, but don't be intimidated, he's as soft as a kitten"
"I told you to stop saying that!" Virgil groaned, tugging his hoodie over his head. "And we are not best friends" he added, yelping as Roman scooped him up and raced back into the apartment. Patton stared at the last man, he pinched the bridge of his nose, wearing similar glasses to himself. "I do apologise for his idiotic behaviour. I am Logan, the man you spoke with on the phone" Logan stuck out his hand, Patton shaking it timidly.
He remembered the phone call, he sounded a little more robotic than he does in real life, which was a plus, but he definitely doesn't seem...one for emotion-type things.
"Let me help" Logan offered, taking his suitcase and leading him in. Patton stared in awe at the apartment, it led straight into the living room, the walls littered with framed posters from Disney and different emo-like bands, also the furniture and walls were very aesthetically pleasing, Patton noted.
"That is the kitchen" Logan gestured to said room, a set of two stairs leading up to it, also open like the living room. "Down that hallway leads to a barely used bathroom and storage closet, up the stairs on your right you will find Roman and Virgil's bedroom, while to the left is my own and yours. Although, I do spend a lot of time in Virgil's room, so you do not need to worry about disturbing me" Logan concluded, wearing a smile, albeit small.
With Roman and Virgil still play fighting on the couch, Patton thanked him quietly and took his belongings to his new room. "Oh, and" Logan called, throwing a pair of keys perfectly up to Patton who dropped them accidentally. "The black key is for the front door, and the blue one is for your bedroom. Do not ask about the colours, it was Roman's idea" with that, Logan ventured back to the living room to split the two children up.
Patton nodded although he couldn't see, heading to his room.
It wasn't bad, the walls were a pale blue, a soft white carpet, surprisingly a double bed pressed into the corner with a desk and closet. He guessed if he needed more he could bring it up himself, but he didn't want to become too comfortable, he was still assuming they would eventually make him leave.
But he'd already become attached to them, oh well...he'd hide his emotions like he usually does.
(I got 916 words before needing a toilet break!)
Unbothered, he left his suitcase by the closet and kicked off his shoes, flopping onto the rather comfortable bed. He breathed out, bringing in the scent of his new room. It was nice, he couldn't lie about that, it even brought a small smile to his face, but it didn't last long. Recently, his smiles haven't lasted long, not like they used to, but he didn't want to dwell on the thought, instead he brought a pillow to his chest and quickly fell asleep.
A few months had passed since Patton moved in, and they were all worried. They didn't know Patton before, so they wouldn't know if he's always acted this way, but he just seems so sad all the time, he never usually smiles, or carries on long conversations, never giving anything about himself away, just kind of...existing in their apartment. He goes to work, and never slacks on rent, he even helps around the place, cleaning up and cooking, so it's not like he's lazy and miserable...still, they all agreed to talk with him about it.
On Wednesdays, Patton was usually last to arrive home from work. He begrudgingly unlocked the door, deciding to help a bit and fall asleep earlier than usual, he just wanted to sleep, and seeing as he had no work tomorrow, he was free and home alone until seven pm.
Walking in, the first thing he noticed was the three of his roommates sitting on the couch, heads perking up at the sight of him. "Hey, Patton!" Roman smiled, patting the spot on the couch between him and Virgil. "We want to talk with you" he added, watching worry and fear wash through his eyes.
"Nothing bad, don't worry" he reassured gently, Virgil smiling a small smile to help.
Patton slowly nodded, brushing his hair to the side and taking off his cardigan to wrap around his shoulders.
"What...do you want to talk about?" Patton questioned, forcing a smile at the three. Logan sat opposite on the edge of the chair, hands clasped together on his knees.
"Roman?" He rose an eyebrow at the fanciful man. He nodded, turning to him.
"Are you...alright, Patton?"
The question took him off guard, he stuttered and shrugged, trying to come up with a believable lie. "O-of course I am, why?" He replied, fumbling with the end of the cardigan sleeve, catching Logan's attention.
"You don't seem it" Virgil replied, crossing his arms. "You don't have to lie to us" he carried on, "I went through the same thing...these guys can and will help, you can trust us" he awkwardly rubbed Patton's arm, Patton's head falling down to stare at his lap, hands clasped tightly to the clothing tied across his shoulders.
"I...I...-" he drifted, unstoppable tears pooling in his eyes. Going to stand up, Roman placed a hand on his upper arm, stopping him. "Don't push us away.." he whispered gently, watching his eyes flicker quickly around the room. "We can help you, Patton" Logan adjusted his glasses, watching his breathing quicken.
"Virgil" Logan mouthed, nodding at Patton. He caught on, carefully wrapping an arm around his shoulder and whispering the breathing technique that always calmed him down to his ear, Roman rubbing his hand gently, his shaking fingers loosely grasping around Roman's. "I-I'm sorry" He choked, catching his breath to speak.
"No, no, you have nothing to apologise for!" Roman quickly replied, grabbing a tissue to clean his cheek after a few tears rolled down them. "You can cry, Patton. Crying helps when you are upset" Logan advised, Patton glanced at Logan as he spoke, eyes drifting to Virgil who nodded softly, finally letting Patton break down and sob.
As he did, Roman moved his arm around his waist, letting Patton lean into his chest, crying his eyes out. Logan stood up and grabbed a painkiller and a cup of water, knowing after crying it leaves you with a pounding headache, especially if you're crying as hard as he is. Virgil went to grab a blanket and the teddy Patton always kept on his bed, handing it to him gently when he arrived back, watching Patton's shaking hands grab it and hug it close, still leaning on Roman who combed his fingers through his soft hair in attempts to calm him down.
"It's okay, Patton...let it out" Roman whispered, kissing the crown of his head. Another wave of tears began, all they could do was watch helplessly, letting him cry until he physically couldn't.
It must've taken an hour before his tears stopped, and another few minutes for him to catch his breathing.
"Here" Logan handed him the pill and water, he thanked him quietly and gulped it down, falling back against Roman, exhausted. "Would you like to tell us what's bothering you? It's perfectly okay if you want to wait" Roman spoke, still brushing his hair, softly and slowly. Patton glanced at them all, breathing in deeply.
"I-I didn't want to worry you, I thought you'd kick m-me out" He stammered, carrying on before anyone could interject. "Kick me out if I was annoying" he added, blowing into a tissue. "It-it's stupid, but growing up my brother was the only person there for m-me, we were...best friends" he brought in a shaky breath, Roman began to rub his arm gently, still holding him close.
"A little over t-two years ago he caught an illness...two weeks later he died...I-I was there with him until the end" his voice cracked, lips quivering. Virgil messed with his sleeves, chewing his lip to try and distract himself from crying with him. Logan only looked down, listening to his story with a heavy heart.
"I just want him b-back...he didn't deserve to d-...to die" he whispered, eyes ready to cry again. A silence settled over them, no one knew what to say, Patton worried they'd call him stupid for mourning for this long, but he couldn't help it, not only did he love is brother more than any other family member, but no one helped him after his death...no one. He was alone ever since.
Maybe this time it would be different...
"Thank you for telling us" Roman finally spoke, in a soft voice. Patton visibly relaxed, knowing he hadn't annoyed them. "I am sorry for your loss, Patton" Logan spoke up, too. He didn't really know what to say, he wasn't one for helping someone with emotions, or reassurance, he was only good for knowledge, he was glad Roman and Virgil could do a much better job.
"He's...not gone" Virgil began, clearing his throat, staring into Patton's eyes. "He's still here, with you" Virgil tapped his heart, "his memories, your memories...no illness can take that away" Patton sniffled, a small wavering smile resting on his lips.
"Thank you.." he whispered, watching a small smile rise on Virgil's own lips.
"Look at that smile!" Roman gasped, tilting his head up. Patton giggled, quickly covering his mouth afterwards. Roman's eyes widened with delight, watching Patton lean back, covering his mouth while giggling quietly. "Listen to that laugh! You're adorable! I must make you smile more often! It's brighter than the sun!" Roman ranted, grinning at Patton who's eyes lit up, instead of their usual dull glow, they brightened with the force of a million stars.
Virgil rolled his eyes, moving away so Roman could bring Patton into a hug, falling onto the couch with the laughing man. "Crying really does help" Virgil commented, sitting on Logan's lap. He smiled, wrapping his arms around his waist. "Of course it does, although he is still hurting, he can also be happy" Logan smiled at Virgil who kissed his head.
"Who knew you were the emotional type" he taunted, earning a displeased look. "How dare you" Virgil laughed, wrapping his arm around Logan's shoulders, finding himself enjoying the sound of Roman's and Patton's laugh mixed together, and it seemed Logan did too.
