Logan flew through the village as quickly as he could, book clasped tightly to his chest. Dodging past the other fairies as he did, he stopped outside of Virgil's hut, breathing in deeply and straightening himself out before entering.
"Logy!" Patton exclaimed, his wings fluttering in excitement as he raced to his boyfriend, wrapping him in a tight hug.
"Greetings, Love" Logan replied, hugging him shortly, turning to Virgil who had his head in Roman's lap, staring at the ceiling.
"Virgil, I have found a solution!" Logan was so happy with what he found he couldn't contain his excitement, making Patton grin and giggle quietly.
"The solution to what? Princey's annoyance?" Virgil snorted, his boyfriend holding a hand over his heart, mock hurt.
"I am not-"
"Roman, shut up. This is important" Roman shot Logan a glare with no real hate, shuffling forward as Virgil sat up. He dragged the coffee table over, laying the book he was holding onto it, causing a loud thud. Kneeling beside him, Patton watched him flick through the thick book to find the right page.
"What is it, Logan?"
"The solution for Virgil's broken wing" he replied hurriedly, still skimming through the pages, cursing himself he didn't bookmark the page.
Virgil gasped, leaning back a bit. His broken wing was a...touchy subject, one he preferred no one brought up. It happened at a very young age, he was flying to school normally, taking the short cut as he usually did - even though the shortcut was banned to every fairy - when suddenly a creature from the long grass jumped and attacked him. Now, fairies weren't tiny, they were human size, (in fact humans don't exist in this world anymore-) so that creature was giant.
Screaming in fear, Virgil tried to defend himself as all fairies are taught at a young age, but it was strong. Before any of the fighter fairies could get to him, the creature ripped his left wing, leaving him on the ground, never to be able to fly again. Unfortunately, there isn't a fixable procedure for broken wings, luckily Virgil had Roman, Logan and Patton to help him through it, so they knew never to mention it unless absolutely necessary.
"Logan...please" he begged quietly, looking down. Roman frowned, delicately wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
"Aha!" Logan spun the book around, pointing to the faded picture on the book. It was of a fairy with a broken wing, placing in undetectable ingredients into a pot. On the next page, it shows the fairy drinking it, and their wing slowly regenerating.
"We can fix your wing" Patton whispered, shocked.
Virgil stammered, slowly standing up and walking away, fiddling with his sleeves. "G-guys...I...that's pretty old..a-and if it does work, why doesn't the head fairy know?"
Logan sighed, closing the book but this time, folding the page so it is easily accessible. "It is an old book, so old it wasn't on the shelves in the library. It was...dated back when humans were still alive" this elicited shocked gasps from each of them as Roman rushed towards Logan, holding a hand over his mouth.
"You know we never talk about...them"
"I know" Logan sighed, moving his hand away. "But even so, they helped us, a long time ago they showed us how to fix our wings. The war made us think all humans hated us, but that is the complete opposite. Most of them were friends with us, and we killed them all. Who is really in the wrong?"
Roman turned back to look at Patton and Virgil who both didn't reply to what he said, "the war was a long time ago" Roman began slowly, crossing his arms. "They killed us-"
"They were defending themselves. Their race. Something that is instilled in us all! Look, we can argue about the human race all day, or we can try and fix his wing. Which would you rather accomplish?" Logan looked at them all, clutching the book tighter and tighter.
"Virgil?" Patton murmured softly, after all it came down to him. It is his wing. He sighed, rolling his sleeves past his hands, biting his nails afterwards, confused and scared about it all.
"Okay" he breathed out, lifting his head. "Lets...fix my wing"
—
"How are we to get passed the fighter fairies? You know how the rules are, we cannot leave our village. We are but commoners!" Roman sighed out, flying slowly, his stomach facing up with a hand on his forehead (his dramatic ass-) next to the three who walked. "Roman" Virgil sighed, rolling his eyes. "You used to be a fighter fairy, meaning you know the route to escape" he said as if it was obvious. Roman paused, landing on the ground with a grin.
"Ah, yes! Thank you, Dearest!" Roman grinned, fluttering his wings. They walked passed the farms, waving at a few fairies who waved over to them. Logan shuffled the bag on his shoulders, moving it so it was more comfortable. It was quite heavy with just the book inside, he didn't want to know how much weight he'd have to carry after they gather the ingredients.
Heading to the cornfields, Roman subtly looked all around, noticing no one was looking he gestured for them to all duck in, which they did, quietly making their way through the tall corn. This was a cornfield used by most but somewhere - only fighter fairies know - is a small hatch on the ground, lift it up and before you is a secret passage way leading past the outskirts of the village.
"Before we go" Roman said quietly, looking up at the sky. "Hide here, I'll be right back" with that, he shot up into the air, flying towards a building built into one of the many tall trees spotted around the village, all of them holding look out posts.
"Hey, Roman!" The fairy in said tree grinned, leaning out the window. Roman smiled, landing on the porch. "Greetings, Scott" they shared a quick hug, Scott leaning back to eye up Roman. "So, planning to finally escape?" Roman sighed, shaking his head. "I have Virgil, you know I can't do that if he can't fly" Roman smiled sadly, Scott frowning at his reply, reaching out to rub his shoulder.
"You can't let fairies weigh you down, don't let a fairy stop you from doing what you want!"
Roman's gaze turned into a glare. "That fairy is my life, I love him with all my heart, and the weight of guilt if I ever left would be more heavy than what a fairy could ever do" instead of looking shocked by his outburst, Scott only grinned and slapped his shoulder friendly. "Glad to see you haven't changed, Rome" Roman only smirked, shaking his head.
"Although, I am leaving, with my friends..we'll be back, but you have to cover for me" Scott nodded, "of course!" He instantly agreed, climbing through the window to stand on the porch with him.
"Plan on going on an adventure?"
Roman scratched the back of his neck. "You could say that..." he drifted, letting his eyes gaze across the large village, spotting fairies flying around in the distance, imagining what it would be like to fly high in the sky with Virgil again. Scott rose an eyebrow, staring at Roman with a look which made the fanciful man sigh.
"We're going to try and fix Virgil's wing"
Scott's mouth fell open in surprise, his arms falling to their sides. "Really? Roman...it's impossible"
Roman shook his head, "it's not, Logan found a book, we need to get the ingredients and he'll...he'll have his wing back" Roman's eyes glazed over with sheer happiness, making Scott smile broadly. "But don't tell anyone-"
"You've got my word, now go before anyone spots you" Roman smiled, hugging Scott quickly before flying down to his friends, waving at Scott who waved back, smiling softly.
"Let's go!" Roman grinned, pulling up the hatch, bowing next to it.
Logan was first to go down, climbing down the ladder cautiously, looking down below him at the dark tunnel. "You have wings, Logan" Roman called, hearing a sigh and a small grunt, watching him fly down the rest of the way. Virgil was next, seeing as he had to use the ladder, he slowly climbed down, glancing up at Roman every few seconds, panic showing in his eyes but he relaxed a little every time he saw his reassuring smile.
"You'll be okay" he smiled at Patton who seemed a little hesitant. "Roman...what if...we don't come back?" Roman closed the hatch, bringing Patton into a tight hug. "With me, you'll be safe, so stay close. We will come back, that's a promise" stroking his cheek, Roman leaned back from the hug, watching him lean into the touch, sighing out.
"Thank you" he smiled, Roman nodded and lifted the hatch, Patton flying down and landing next to Logan. Taking one last glance around, Roman jumped down, the hatch closing shut behind him.
"It is quite dark" Logan commented, feeling Patton grab his hand gently.
"Watch this" Roman replied, bumping the wall with his hip. Suddenly, lights lit up down the tunnel, emitting an orange glow. "Satisfactory" Logan nodded, heading down with Patton skipping next to him, wearing a grin. Virgil looked at Roman, chewing his lip softly. Roman stood by him, gently stroking his wings he always kept flat against his back, the half of the left wing gone.
"You'll fly again" Roman whispered, leaning down to kiss him gently.
"What if I don't? What if it doesn't work?" Roman brushed their noses together. "Cognitive distortions. Don't think about it until we have the potion, okay?" Virgil sighed, chuckling softly. "You've been hanging out with Logan for too long" grinning, Roman pointed down the hall dramatically, letting Virgil go first.
The dark-clothed man only shook his head, catching up with Logan and Patton, Roman close behind.
They walked for what seemed like forever, getting complaints from Virgil about how his legs were "killing him" and every time, Logan would correct his complaint, telling him his legs were in fact not killing him.
"It's the end!" Patton gasped, touching the dry-muddy wall. Roman's eyes sparkled with delight, looking up he lifted the hatch, poking his head out to make sure it was safe.
"We're here!" He yelled happily, bursting up and high into the sky, twirling around to take in the unfamiliar land. Even if the fighter fairies knew of the tunnel, none have ever been down it, meaning Roman was the first in their generation! Including the other three, of course. Taking in the air, he breathed out happily, landing back on the grass to see Logan and Patton fly up.
Sinking back down, he curled one arm around Virgil's back and under his legs, carrying him bridal style through the hole. "Thanks" he murmured shyly, Roman placing him down gently, kissing his head. "I won't have to do that soon" he whispered, watching an unstoppable smile rest on Virgil's lips.
"Now, how do we find these ingredients?" Roman asked Logan after the two landed, both looking astonished at the land around them. "Yes, uh, one second" Logan grabbed the book, reading over the pages. "Well, the first ingredient feathers from a..." he peered at the word closely, groaning. "It is too faded"
They all looked at it, seeing the first two letters but the rest were unreadable.
"H-a" Logan read out, "Ha..." he sighed, biting his lip and looking up from the book. Fairies never bothered with creatures, only a few types that could help them with farming and such. Patton placed a finger by the word, "Well, next to the 'a' is a 'v' - maybe - and next to that is a 'l'. Which would spell out Havl...which doesn't sound right" he frowned, looking at Logan who read it over again. "Havl...we can assume the 'v' is a 'w'...Hawl?"
"Hawk" Virgil blurted, gaining their attention. "Feathers from a hawk. The 'l' isn't an 'l', it's a 'k'" he explained, pointing at the letter once more. Logan gasped, "You are right!...what is a hawk?"
"A type of bird if it has feathers" Roman replied. Logan shut the book, stuffing it into his backpack. "We did not come prepared. Ugh! I am an idiot, Virgil, I am so sorry" Logan cursed himself, pinching his nose and sighing out. "Hey, dude, it's fine...I don't need to fly, besides, we're out here now, might as well enjoy it" he replied, shrugging his shoulders lightly.
"Who knows? We might even stumble across a human!" Patton grinned, beginning their journey across the large field, waving up at the sun above their heads. Logan sighed, still beating himself up about it, but following behind, wondering what type of bird a hawk could be. Large, small, aggressive, passive...
Picking up a few flowers he'd never seen before, Roman breathed in their sent, smiling happily and placing one in his hair. Ever since he was young, he's always wanted to run away, being stuck in a village wasn't something that suited him at all, and...they were all going to run away, Roman convinced them too, until Virgil was attacked...they couldn't possibly make it with Virgil stuck to walking, but Roman would do anything for him, so he stayed.
Now he was here, he didn't know if he wanted to return...
Flying up, he floated along slowly, wings flapping against the slight breeze softly, eyes gazing past the field they were currently going across, spotting trees, some having leaves that weren't green! Past the great span of green, came yellow, and just a big block of deep blue. He knew it was water, but how on Earth was there so much?
Shrugging, he swooped down, picking up Virgil in the process. The fairy yelped, gripping onto Roman tightly. "Princey! Why?! Put me down!" He cried, forcing himself to not look down. Roman only smiled, flying into the air, clutching him tightly. "Look" he whispered, nodding straight forward. Virgil sighed, but did so, mouth falling open in shock and awe.
Patton and Logan flew up next to them, also frozen by the scenery laid out in front of them.
"I wanna go to the yellow stuff!" Patton grinned, pointing at what they didn't know was sand. "Want to" Logan corrected, the three fairies flying through the air, Roman carrying Virgil protectively. It felt nice to feel the breeze through his hair, high above the ground, but he hates getting used to the feeling, knowing he'd never be able to do it by himself.
They all stayed silent, taking it all in, knowing if Virgil would fly they would've left that village years ago.
Suddenly, though, disturbing their peace a loud horn sounded in the distance, stopping their movements.
"Woah, what was that?" Patton worried, spinning around to try and pin point where the sound came from. "It was a horn, but who blew it?" Logan replied, Roman stayed silent, narrowing his eyes in the distance where he saw some movement.
"Follow me!" He called, propelling himself forward in the air, Logan and Patton following close behind. "Where are we going?" Virgil murmured quietly, staring at Roman'a face which was set with determination.
"Who knows" Roman repeated Patton's earlier statement, grinning. "We might even stumble across a human"
Virgil gasped, had Roman really spotted a...human? The race that was supposedly instinct? Logan and Patton caught up, flying level to Roman, following his gaze to where he was planning to fly to. It seemed to be a cliff looming over the yellow stuff just before the deep blue water that sparkled under the sunlight.
"Look" Roman paused, flying on the spot, seeing two possible fairies on the cliff, waving up at them. "Are they in trouble?" Patton worried, eyebrows creasing. "It could be a trap" Logan replied, gazing to Roman. "It wouldn't be a trap if we get them first" Virgil quietly mumbled, arms wrapped around Roman's neck, head tilted down to stare at them.
"Only one way to find out" Roman flew down, Patton and Logan in tow.
Landing on the soft grass, Roman placed Virgil down, the two fairy-looking things slowly and cautiously walking up towards them. Logan was first to spot they didn't have wings.
"Humans" Patton whispered, a grin widening. "Humans!" He yelled this time, bobbing on his feet excitedly as they approached. "How is this....possible, you are supposed to be dead" Logan spoke, watching the two humans glance at each other, nodding.
(A llama? He's supposed to be dead! -sorrynotsorry)
"I'm Thomas, this is my friend, Joan. We need your help" Thomas introduced, Joan giving them a small wave.
"AHH! THEY'RE SO CUTE!" Patton couldn't help but squeal, running up to them happily. "Patton, are species are almost exactly alike, apart from our wings...and grey blood"
"You have grey blood?" Joan questioned, earning a slight glare from Thomas. "Not the time, we need your help" he repeated, brushing off Patton as he tried to touch him.
"We need your help, too. Do you by any chance know what a hawk is?" Logan asked, Thomas looked at him weirdly, then gazed up, pointing to a bird in the distance. "Hawk" he replied shortly.
"Great!" Roman grinned, kissing Virgil's cheek before shooting off in it's direction.
"Now, how can we help you?" Logan asked, ignoring the loud screams and screeches in the distance. The two humans stared in shock at the fairy who fought with the hawk in the air, twirling and tumbling, until a loud "AHA!" was heard and Roman flew back, looking a mess but holding three feathers in his hand. "One ingredient down!" He yelled, punching the air happily. Logan put it safely in his bag, finally turning to the humans.
"You have magic powers, right?" Thomas blurted quickly.
"Wait!" Patton exclaimed, "I'm Patton, that's Roman, that's Logan, and that's Virgil!" he grinned, pointing them out. "Carry on" they all stared at him for a few seconds before Thomas shook his head, turning to Logan who he assumed was the smartest.
"Magic Powers is a strong phrase-"
"You have them, correct?" He spoke again, but more firmly. Logan deflated, nodding. "Yes, we do"
Thomas grabbed his arm tugging him to the edge of the cliff. "Logan!" Patton yelled, Roman quickly rushing forward or scoop him away from Thomas who growled, eyes flaming with anger. "We helped you. Now. Help. Us"
"Thomas, calm down-" Joan tried, but Thomas didn't listen, glaring at Roman who glared straight back. "Put me down, Roman. He is not going to hurt us"
"How do you know?!"
"In that war we lost a lot of people, on both sides, no one will ever be willing to start it again. They need help, do not think they are a threat" Roman sighed but what he said made sense. Placing him down, Thomas thanked him quietly. "See that?" He pointed to an opening on the neighbouring cliff. Logan nodded, letting Thomas grab his arm again.
"Two of you will have to carry me and Joan down there, with your powers you can heal us" Logan glanced at his friends, Patton looked a little cautious, Virgil looked panicked, while Roman looked blank, but they all nodded.
Logan sighed, carrying Thomas while Patton carried Joan and Roman carried Virgil, flying as quickly as they could to the opening.
"Is this were you have been living?" Virgil finally spoke up, walking through the large hole with the others beside him. Thomas nodded, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "We are dying out because of a disease the fairies gave us, stupidly only a fairy can cure it. The disease is passed through genetics, so all you have to do is focus on healing most of the woman and after, as many of the men as you can" Thomas turned to them before they could walk through the gap which led to the cave holding the population of humans.
"Please" he added quietly.
"Well, I must tell you only two of us are healers. Virgil and Patton. I am apart of the "knowledge fairies" you could call them, meaning my powers resort to knowledge, while Roman is a fighter fairy, he can defend and fight without needing any training. But, healing takes a lot of energy, so it will quickly take it out of Patton and Virgil" Logan explained, making sure Thomas and Joan nodded, showing their understanding.
"Are you up for it?" Thomas asked Virgil and Patton who shared a look. Smiling, Patton nodded, standing forward. "I'll help as much as I can, so will Virgil" the fairy nodded, hiding his face behind his bangs.
"Thank you, so much" Thomas smiled a little, him being the first to slip through the gap, the fairies following with Joan coming up last.
"They're here!" A voice called, everyone in the cave turning their heads, gazing at the fairies in shock and wonder. A small boy ran up to Thomas, the human picked him up, hugging him tightly. "We can be cured" Thomas whispered to him quietly.
The fairies stood in the middle, humans resting on ledges that stuck out of the walls and on the floor, along with on flat rocks. "They're all weak" Thomas explained, "it's what the disease does, most of us don't last to thirty five" the fairies frowned, not realising how much they badly effected the humans.
"Is this them?" An older looking man asked Thomas, looking over the fairies. "Yes, is she okay?"
The man sighed, "barely" turning to the fairies once more, he motioned them to follow him, which they did. The cave was silent, everyone's eyes following the fairies as they stopped outside of a small circle of rocks, a lady in her late twenties laying on a man who held her protectively, she looked weak, and to add on to that she was pregnant.
Patton waited for permission, the man who held the woman nodded, watching him intently as he knelt beside her, rubbing his hands together he created a soft yellow glow, pressing his hand against her stomach, he closed his eyes, the yellow glow delicately floating around her body, sinking down into her skin
She gasped quietly, tilting her head into the man's chest, eyes still closed.
"Is it working?" Thomas quietly asked, glancing at Logan who sighed. "This disease is one of the hardest to heal, if my knowledge of it is correct, and as you said earlier most of you do not survive past thirty five. This woman is quite old in your shortened life span, the oldest are always more hard to heal, and with a baby, it creates problems, as Patton is now having to save two lives" Logan explained, everyone around them staring at him intently.
"I am sorry, but he cannot save both. He is curing the child...and the woman knows this" Logan pressed his lips together, watching tears spring in the corner of Thomas's eyes. The man overheard, closing his own eyes to hold back tears ready to roll down his cheeks.
After a few minutes, Patton stood back up, the yellow glow soon vanishing.
The woman cracked her eyes open, smiling at Patton weakly. "Thank you..." she whispered, a few men picking her up, taking her deeper into the cave.
"They're taking her to where the woman give birth" Thomas quietly explained, turning around to walk away from the fairies who awkwardly stood close to each other.
"I feel so bad, look what we've done to them" Patton whispered, turning to Logan who sighed, averting his gaze to his boyfriend. "We did not do this, remember that war...was years ago, I am shocked the human race have lasted this long. But-" he straightened out his glasses, "this is not why we are here, we need the ingredients-"
"Are you serious?" Virgil cut him off, speaking a little louder than they were prior. "Look at them! They're dying out, and you care more about my wing?"
"You do not possibly think you and Patton can save them all? There are at least over five hundred in this cave, and more out there! Healer fairies can only save ten people a day, but you would need three days to fully regenerate your healing abilities, otherwise it can kill you-"
"But the human race is dying too!" Patton butted in, seeming desperate to save them.
"If you decide to use your powers until you die, what then?"
"You gather more healer from the village" Virgil replied, crossing his arms, agitated.
"Virgil, there is a reason we do not mention humans in our village. Like I said, no one will start another war, but that does not mean humans and fairies are best friends. Can you not feel the tension in here? You must understand we cannot convince fairies to help the humans, as they started the war, they nearly killed us off, I know earlier I defended the humans, but it would be impossible to save them. Now, we can either leave, or you can heal as many humans as you can, and then leave, but do not even think for a second we can help the human race. We cannot, I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that is just how life is" Logan swiftly spoke, watching disappointment and sadness fill each of their eyes.
'He's right" Roman sighed, smiling sadly at Logan who nodded, looking away. The humans heard what they were saying, hearts dropping, the hope they held being crushed by one fairy's words.
"Why can't you help us?" One human said sadly, in a begging tone. The fairies turned towards the voice, but they couldn't tell who it was.
"This is unfair!" Another yelled from the other side of the cave, the fairies spun around to face it, but all they saw was angry faces.
"You gave us this disease!"
More and more yelling erupted, Roman slowly picked up Virgil, the three of them flying up into the air as the humans slowly stood up and walked towards them.
"We should go..." Roman spoke quietly, gazing up at his friends.
"Can we really not save them?" Patton whimpered, tears brimming his brown eyes. "I am sorry, Patton" Logan shook his head, letting Patton silently cry onto his shoulder
The old man from before walked out, quietening everyone down. "If you can't help us, I advise you leave" he said sternly, looking up at the fairies who nodded solemnly.
"We're sorry-"
"Sorry won't save us" he snapped, turning back around.
Patton suddenly yelped in pain from a rock that hit the back of his head. This made Logan snap.
"Listen!" His voice bellowed throughout the cave, surprising them all.
"If you want our sympathy, this is not how you gain it, understand that we gave you the disease because you were killing us. We assumed it wiped you out, it was our last resort, to my knowledge we are the only fairies to know humans exist. You have no one to blame but the human race, you fear what you do not understand, us fairies tried to help, but we get a war in return. I am glad we cannot help you, you do not deserve it in the slightest"
With that, he flew out the cave, Patton grasped tightly in his arms as the fairy cried. Roman quickly followed with Virgil, mouthing an apology to Thomas and Joan.
They silently flew over the yellow dust like substance, gazing down at the forests below, flying further and further until there was an opening. Landing on the dark coloured grass, Patton fell to the floor, eyes empty.
Logan kissed his head gently, walking away to collect fire wood. Sitting Virgil next to Patton, Roman stayed on watch, turning his head at every movement from the surrounding vegetation, but most of the time it was wind.
With the crackling fire in place, the four sat around it, warming themselves up with emotionless expressions.
"I apologise" Logan spoke up after awhile. "If I did not argue, you might have saved more people" he gazed at Virgil and Patton, shaking is head. "I suppose I was more worried about you two, than the dying humans, does that make me bad?"
"No, Logy, no...it's okay, like you said...they don't deserve it" Patton cuddled close to him, brushing his thumb across his cheek gently. "It's fine" Virgil sighed, finally giving in and leaning on Roman who smiled happily.
"Every race dies out somehow...it's either them, or us" he shrugged, staring at the fire, feeling a little happy at the thought they still had a chance to fix his wing.
After this, they broke out into conversation, mostly about random, uplifting topics until they all fell asleep.
—
Roman was first to arise the next morning. Stretching his limbs and wings, he slowly stood up, making sure not to wake up Virgil who was cuddled into his chest. Noting the fire had gone out during the night, he went into his bag, pulling out a snack for everyone as breakfast.
"Grr..."
Roman froze, ears perking up at the noise. Slowly turning around, he spotted the creature that made the sound. A medium sized creature with grey-black ish fur, sharp looking teeth visible because his lips were pulled back into a sneer, his ears flat against his head, emitting loud growls at the fairies. Roman's eyes narrowed, leaving his bag on the ground, he stood protectively in front of his friends and boyfriend, wings flattening against his back like the creatures ears.
Roman was able to steer the creature from the sleeping fairies before he pounced first, dodging his teeth and grabbing him around the stomach, throwing the creature against a tree, emitting a whimper from it. This carried on for awhile, the only damage the creature got on Roman was a gash across his arm, but in the end the creature retreated into the woods.
Going back to his friends, only then were they waking up, Patton being the first to spot his gash.
"Roman!" He exclaimed, rushing over and examining it closely.
"I'm okay" he smiled, "just had a little run-in...Virgil?"
The fairy sluggishly moved over, snack hanging from his mouth as he placed his hand on the gash, healing it quickly with the yellow glow. Roman kisses his head, thanking him quietly.
"We have the feathers. Now we must collect a water lily-"
Patton squealed, rushing over to Logan. "I know what they are! I saw them, they're back there!" He pointed the way they came, smiling widely at the fact he can help. Logan smiled back, standing up and kissing him. It was rare to see Logan make the first move in something as affectionate as that, but Roman and Virgil didn't complain.
Patton happily kissed back, wrapping his arms around Logan's shoulders. "Okay, okay" Roman grinned, splitting them apart. They quickly ate their breakfast, Logan packing away the book before they followed Patton to where he spotted the pond.
"They're so pretty!" He gasped, eyes sparking, staring at them with awe. Virgil chuckled, kneeling on the pond next to him, dragging over flower, letting Patton delicately lift it up and place into Logan's bag.
"That was relatively easy" Logan commented, reading over the list. "Ah, now we must gather some honey"
"Honey..." Virgil drifted quietly, "honey? What's honey?" Patton frowned, staring at Logan hopefully. "I do not know, is it another animal?" He questioned no one in particular, Roman not knowing either.
"We can't ask the humans-"
"I know...what honey is" Virgil spoke up, gaining their attention. "I read a book about it, though the teacher took it away from me before I could learn about the bug that produced it, but...we need to find a beehive" he explained, standing up. "A beehive?" Roman grinned, "sounds exciting"
"I think they're dangerous, though" Virgil warned, making Roman's eyes narrow. "I'll protect you all!" He declared, "now, where are these 'beehives' Dearest?"
He glanced around, shaking his head. "Not in places like these. Come on" they all flew up into the air, Virgil held protectively in Roman's arms as he pointed out the way.
"I'm gonna miss your arms" Virgil commented, resting his head on Roman's shoulder. The protective fairy grinned, pressing a gentle kiss to Virgil's unsuspecting lips.
"And I'll miss having you in my arms"
(Y'know the movie Up? Well, I have the song that plays during the scene where it shows Ellie's and Carl's life, and the sad part at the end began playing, and I shit you not tears are forming. Help-)
Virgil blushed a little, actually relaxing in his arms instead of tensing, knowing Roman would never drop him.
It took most of the day to find a beehive, and once they did Roman made the three stay away as he cautiously walked up to it, spying the small bugs that flew around.
"Why, they're just tiny bugs!" He commented, reaching up to grab the beehive, holding it in his arms.
That was until the "tiny bugs" began to sting Roman, making him yelp and drop the hive, flying up into the air, screaming as he was chased by a swarm. Virgil fell back onto the ground, laughing uncontrollably while Logan and Patton cautiously walked up to the hive. "I assume the honey is inside" Logan spoke, using a large rock to crack it open.
"Oh, it's a liquid-" he peered closer, "a slow moving liquid. We need a jar" giving the hive to Patton he grabbed some leaves, sticks, and vines he collected from the environment they were in prior, quickly making something that could hold the honey. Logan knelt back beside Patton, they poured in the honey, placing the makeshift jar gently into the bag.
"We're ready!" Logan called, watching Roman fly through the air, still screaming.
"He's a fighter fairy" Logan sighed, shaking his head. Roman noticed how they were all waiting and swooped down.
"Wait-no!" Virgil yelled but Roman already plucked him from the ground, Patton and Logan having no choice but to follow. After awhile, the bees were long gone, now the fairies flew through the air, waiting for Logan's next instruction.
"Now we must collect some river water, find a shaded area and use a bowl to mix the ingredients together. A healer fairy - you or Patton - must add a little of their magic, and...we will have the potion to fix your wing" Logan smiled at Virgil who gasped, feeling a little giddy.
They passed by a river, Logan collecting some of the water in another jar he made quickly. With excitement, they flew to the nearest cave, it was quite open, a little shaded area in the middle.
"Here is the bowl" Logan commented, handing them the wooden bowl he carved in under ten minutes, miraculously.
"Thank you, guys..." Virgil whispered, staring up at his friends, tears of joy glazing over his eyes.
"Aw, Virgil!" Patton pulled him into a hug, Roman quickly joining while Logan smiled, watching as he mixed the ingredients.
"Virgil, your healing powers"
The fairy nodded, letting some of the yellow glow mix in. Soon enough, it turned into a glowing yellow liquid, ready for Virgil to drink. Said fairy picked up the bowl slowly, tilting it back and pouring some into his mouth.
They all waited in anticipation, at least five minutes passed and...nothing.
"No, this is supposed to work" Logan remarked angrily, skimming through the pages. Virgil sighed, head dropping along with his hope and happiness. Maybe it truly was incurable.
Patton gently picked up his wing, but it was the same as before.
"Dearest...I'm so sorry" Roman whispered, Virgil couldn't hold back the sob that escaped, echoing through the cave. Roman hugged him quickly, Patton rubbing his back as he cried.
"I am an idiot!" Logan screeched, tipping away the mixture and starting again, "Logan..." Patton drifted, "it won't work"
"No. It will, you must use your powers, it did not work because Virgil used his healing powers, for it to work, it must be another fairies powers" Logan quickly explained, handing the bowl to Patton who turned his head to the couple.
Virgil turned his head, sniffling and nodding.
"Please.."
Patton turned to the bowl, sprinkling in the yellow glow, it did the same as before, Virgil slowly grabbing it and gulping it down.
Again, they waited, Roman holding the wing ever so softly in his hand.
Suddenly, Virgil gasped, falling forward against the floor.
"Virgil?!" Roman worried, Patton holding his head in his lap, stroking his hair back as his head heated up.
"Look.." Logan shuffled to be closer to his wing. The end of it began to glow yellow, gasps could be heard as it started to grow, and only a few seconds later was the wing back to it's usual long length...
Letting it rest against the other wing, they sat in silence, waiting for Virgil to wake up. The fairy groaned, nuzzling his head against Patton's leg, slowly opening his eyes.
"It worked, Dearest!" Roman exclaimed, pulling him up into a tight hug, twirling him around. Logan and Patton stood up also, smiling happily at their friends who laughed and cried in happiness.
Placing him down, Roman watched him flutter his wings, gasping Virgil reached for Roman's hand, holding it for emotional support.
"You can do this" Roman smiled at him reassuringly. Giving Virgil the determination he needed, the fairy fluttered his wings, feet slowly arising from the floor.
"I-I'm flying!" He cried, Roman flying up with him as he slowly turned around, tears pooling in his eyes.
"You're flying!" Patton squealed, joining them in the air. Logan grabbed his bag, yelping in shock as Virgil suddenly hugged him tightly.
"Thank you" he choked, hiding his face in Logan's shoulder. The smart fairy hugged back, being careful of his wings.
"No need to thank me. It was my pleasure"
