Logan slammed shut the book he was reading, tossing onto the table. It was a stupid book, he thought, angrily snatching it up and stuffing it back onto the shelf from where it came.

He shook his head.

Dragon witches don't exist. Never have, never will, they're another made up tale like big foot and the Loch Ness Monster.

The old librarian came around the corner, spotting Logan - a common visitor - fuming at the book.

"What's wrong, Dear?" She asked, her old voice raspy but caring.

Logan ran a hand through his hair, turning to the lady with a forced smile.

"Nothing, Liz, I am fine"

"Dearie, you couldn't fool a child"

Logan sighed, gesturing to the book. "This book" he waved, "is trying to get its readers to believe dragon witches exist- I mean, come on"

Liz chuckled, taking down the book with her wrinkly hands, gliding a finger down the old hard cover.

"It's true"

Logan bit back a scoff, "true?"

"I've seen one, I was only young...thirteen, fourteen, they were very nice..." Logan thought she was crazy, which wouldn't be a surprise. Logan didn't want to know how old she was, he wondered why she hadn't retired yet.

"They told me everything they wanted to do in their life...grow up to be a dragon witch who protects others of its kind, marry a female he loved for her, not for her looks, and have a child, a boy named Patton, or a girl named...Penny? Or was it...Abigail?"

Logan rolled his eyes, not believing a word. He loved that woman to bits - in a platonic way - but she did believe in the most impossible things.

"Thank you for telling me that...but I must be going" Logan stated, grabbing his bag, Liz held his arm before he could leave.

"If you want to see one it's not too hard...go into the woods not too far away from the school. You know the one? And call the name Patton..." she told him with a kind smile.

Logan nodded slowly, pulling away from her grip. "Goodbye, Liz"

"Bye bye, Dear"

A few days later Logan was talking to his friend, Roman, about what Liz had told him.

"I say you should do it!"

"Really?"

Roman nodded, stuffing another part of his donut into his mouth. "I mean, she's old, so she must be wise! Why would she lie?"

Logan groaned, giving Roman a 'really?" Look. "You just admitted it, she's old - she probably mistook a lucid dream for real life"

Roman shook his head, "open your mind! Not all things are myths"

"Yes, but dragon witches are"

Roman smirked, "If you go into those woods tomorrow and prove dragon witches aren't real I'll..." Roman paused, chewing another donut. Logan thought he was having way too many.

"I'll buy you lunch for two weeks"

"Three and it is a deal"

Roman nodded, shaking hands firmly with the smarter man.

"Deal"

The next day, as promised, Logan walked through the forest, fallen orange leaves crunching under his shoes. He murmured to himself how stupid this was, how this forest was always filled with dangerous people and animals.

It was rare for someone to actually walk through it, most of it is blocked off apart from a hole in the fence hidden behind a bush.

The forest was so thick you could barely see inside, which makes it a perfect hiding spot for criminals.

Once he deemed it far enough away from any civilisation he paused in a small clearing, the tops of trees still covering him overhead. It wasn't dark, the sun shone through the leaves making an orange glow.

What was the name again?

Ah

"Patton?" He called, his voice loud and clear. It was silent, he rolled his eyes, trying it again.

"Patton?" He called louder, his voice bouncing off trees.

After awhile he chuckled to himself, "This is st-"

"Hi!"

"AHHH!" Logan screamed, spinning around and falling flat on his ass.

Standing in front of him with a cheery smile was a ...a...a

Dragon witch

Logan stared in shock, glancing at the light blue wings, horns, tail, and happy smile once again.

Letting out another not-so-manly scream again he jumped up and sprinted as fast as he could through the forest, knowing he was going deeper but at that moment he didn't care.

Finally he collapsed due to lack of energy, he heaved, his mouth dry, trying to get as much oxygen as he could into his burning lungs.

That couldn't of been a dragon witch...could it? No...no...it was someone playing a prank...

But those wings looked so real.

"Are you okay?"

This time Logan choked down a scream, he turned around, still on the floor, staring up at the...thing in front of him, now he looked worried, his former happy smile a concerned frown.

Logan backwards crawled into a tree, fear clear in his eyes.

"I won't hurt you..." the mythical being cooed gently, bending down to Logan's level. He felt like a scared animal cowering away from a human but this- it was a...dragon witch!

This must be a dream!

Logan pinched himself, wincing afterward. Nope. Maybe Liz wasn't crazy after all...?

He felt guilt but it was overpowered by his pure fear.

The dragon witch moved slowly and cautiously until he was close to the shaking human. He has never met one before, his Father told him about a human he met, and how kind she was, he wanted to befriend a kind human too!

Logan couldn't take it anymore, with the overpowering fear he...fainted.

To be continued...
