Logan headed down the hallway, fixing his tie around his neck. He saw Virgils dark wooden door and knocked on it gently.
"Virgil?"
He called, waiting in silence for a reply, sighing when he didn't get one. It was strange when one day the brothers realised Virgil wasn't the first to awaken, and from that day on someone always had to wake him up - he felt...unmotivated to do anything in the morning, and someone had to drag him out of bed to make some process.
Logan twisted the doorknob and walked in, the room had changed a lot from when he was young. The colours were darker, the shelves filled with discarded toys from the other brothers, clothes scattered everywhere.
It was messy, Virgil never cleaned it. His parents never came in, so he didn't see the point as he didn't care if it was tidy or not.
Logan padded across the carpet to the lump on the bed, shaking it and pulling the blanket down to reveal Virgil who was passed out. "Virgil" Logan called, shaking him a little more roughly. He sighed once realising that Virgil probably stayed up all night last night and has only now gone to sleep - if he tried to come to school today he'd pass out in every lesson - putting himself in unneeded trouble.
Logan left the room and headed down the stairs to the kitchen, his brothers were sat at the table, Roman looking all giddy. Logan remembered about the play Roman was starring in tonight, one that he was auditioning and rehearsing for for months. He invited his parents and brothers, they all agreed to come and he had never been more excited.
"I'm so proud of you, Roman!" Patton grinned, finishing his bowl of cereal. Logan noticed his attire and sighed, scattered across his light blue pyjamas were pictures of small, cartoon dogs. Logan thought he got rid of those pyjamas...
"Patton, go get dressed" Logan called, picking up the phone and dialling the school. Patton nodded and left the room, "your Teddy!" The brother came back, grabbed it, sent a smile to Logan and left.
The school answered and in his best impression of his Father Logan explained that Virgil was sick due to food poisoning from last nights dinner and won't be able to come to school today.
Roman listened, a frown embedded onto his lips. He knew Virgil hadn't gotten food poisoning which was why after breakfast he jogged up to Virgils room.
The brother was still in a deep sleep, near impossible to wake him up. Roman brushed his hair back, sitting down on the bed gently.
"I hope you still come later" he mumbled quietly, "I want to see you all in the crowd...you don't have to enjoy it but please...for my sake?" Virgil was asleep so Roman didn't know why he was talking.
"We will come"
The sudden voice made Roman jump, he whipped his head to see Logan with Patton next to him. "Thank you" Roman smiled bashfully.
Patton kissed his head and hugged Roman tightly, "We promise, Roman!"
Logan left a note and the brothers left, their parents hadn't been there at all due to being over a friends. They had gotten too drunk at a party and stayed the night. Hours passed before Virgil actually woke up, and another half hour until he sat up and opened his eyes.
"Mom..." he whispered, the faint dream still fading, but he could remember being in his Mothers arms.
Picking up the note on the bedside table he collapsed against the bed, groaning. Dammit, he thought bitterly, he wanted to be in today! Logan was presenting his project and he wanted to see it.
Dragging a hand down his face he called himself stupid, sitting up and almost leaving his bed until he realised he was home alone.
Panic struck and he ducked down, shuffling to the wall the bed was pressed against. He drew his legs up and pulled the blanket around himself tighter, eyes glued to the door.
He counted down the minutes until he heard the front door open and the noises of his brothers, still waiting until he saw Logan in the doorway.
"Logan, I'm sorry....how was the Uh...presentation?" Logan dismissed his apology, telling him it was okay that he stayed home, Logan would've preferred it that way anyway.
"And yes, the presentation went better then I anticipated. Thank you for your help" Virgil smiled slightly, his arms moving by his sides. Remembering that this means Virgil wanted to give a hug Logan sat on his bed, pulling his brother into a warm embrace.
"I love you" Logan blurted out of the blue, Virgils heart warmed but it was a little odd for Logan to say it out of everyone but still...he didn't mind.
"Love you too"
Logan leaned back, staring at Virgils face. "Recently I..." Logan drifted, looking off to the side, his shoulders deflating.
"You?" Virgil encouraged, tilting his head.
"I have noticed our parents to be more mean to you than they have before...I am truly sorry I- or any of us has not tried to stop it"
Virgil shook his head quickly. "No, you know what Dad will do if you tell him to stop something, he'll smack your ass and call it "discipline". I don't want you to get hurt, especially Patton...it-it's not like he's my favourite - well you're all my favourite I just...oh god" he covered his face and Logan smiled a small smile in amusement, taking his hands away from his face.
"I understand, Patton has never gotten hit before - it will affect him differently" Virgil nodded, scratching his head and looking away.
"Just leave it" Virgil sighed out at last. "Your parents can do what they want, I still have you guys" he smiled. Logan nodded and the two shared another hug, Logan noting that he said your instead of our.
Later that day an argument broke out between Virgil and his parents, a bad one. The worst for awhile, actually.
"I didn't break the damn glass!"
"Well, what about all the ones you broke as a child?" His Father demanded in a scary tone, to his brothers they would be terrified but Virgil was used to that face making it completely useless.
"I was a child looking for attention from my parents. I shouldn't have tried to get attention that way but it was the only way that worked!" He yelled, eyes glaring hate into his Fathers stone cold ones.
"We gave you attention" his Mother defended with an angry expression. "When? 'Cus I think you're mistaking me for my brothers"
"Don't speak to your Mother like that-"
"Fine! I won't speak to her at all!" Virgil screamed at his Father in pure rage, taking it back instantly.
His Father grabbed him by the hair making him cry out, usually this would end in Virgil being dragged up the stairs kicking and screaming apologies to end with him being whipped by a belt on the ass because his Father realised the hand wasn't good enough.
But, Logan stepped in, leaving a crying Patton on the couch.
He grabbed the phone and stood in front of his Father. "Don't you dare" he spoke warningly, dialling a number. "I know the number for social services" he spoke again, dialling a second number.
"And I will not hesitate to get us all out of your custody because of child abuse"
"Logan, don't get involved, this is discipline for your stupid brother-"
"There is a fine line between discipline and abuse - you have crossed that line many times, not even physically, mentally, too. I broke the glass, hit me as much as you like but lay one more finger on Virgil and I will make sure you never see us again" his voice brook no argument, eyes dark but his Father knew Logan would do what he said.
Letting Virgil go he dropped to the ground, scurrying to hide behind Logan, shaking in fear. "Pussy" his Father spoke, turning around and muttering how Virgil was a mistake. Logan hung up the phone, glancing at his Mother.
"A Mothers natural instinct would be to protect her children" he spoke, making her look down. "It seems you have lost that"
With that, he walked up the stairs with Virgil and Patton, calming the two down in his room.
Due to the argument everyone forgot about Romans play....
Later that evening Roman came in, the house was silent apart from the muffled noises of the tv. His bag was hanging loosely from one shoulder as he headed to the kitchen, grabbing a drink, an emotionless expression on his face.
His Mother walked in, gasping when she saw Roman, the play suddenly coming back to her. "Oh, Roman..."
"Don't" he replied, drinking some of the beer he grabbed. "I didn't mean to forget! Your brother started an argument and..."
"If it was Virgil he didn't start the argument, and if Dad hit him I will fucking leave with them" Roman stared at his Mother, love for the woman slowly fading into hatred.
"I..he.." she couldn't think of anything to say so Roman chugged down the beer to numb the pain before walking to his room.
On his travel he passed Logan's room, the door was open and he could see all three brothers asleep on his bed. He carried on to his own room, changing into more comfortable clothes.
He forgave his brothers, if there was an argument he knows how Virgil and Patton gets, but he still felt hurt...they promised they would go.
He heard footsteps pause in his doorway and he sighed, dropping his bag. He went to his closet and grabbed another can of beer, opening it quickly and taking a sip. "Roman...I...the play"
It was Patton.
"It's fine, Patton, really-"
Two arms coiled around his waist and he sighed, tapping his finger against the metal can. "Are you drinking again?"
Roman sipped the beer, leaning into his brothers embrace. "Sorry...it's just...the bullies and our fucking Dad..."
"Please don't swear"
"Sorry..." Roman drank more and more, Patton slowly taking the can away and placing it on the bedside table.
"How was the play?"
Roman shrugged, rubbing his eyes. "It was fine, one of my best...actually, you wouldn't know, though"
He regretted what he said, Patton blurting out apologies quickly, meaning every single one. He explained the situation and what happened, Romans blood boiling when Patton said their Father hurt Virgil once more.
Patton kissed his forehead, "Get some sleep, tomorrow is Saturday" he tried to lighten the mood, earning a small smile from Roman.
"And no more drinking-"
"Let me finish it, please"
Patton hesitated, knowing he would regret it but handed it over, Roman chugged it down, throwing the can into his bin.
"Goodnight" Patton smiled, flicking off his light and closing the door. Patton headed to his own room, locking the door and laying on his bed. He cuddled his Teddy close, tears falling onto his pillow.
The guilt from not going to Romans play eating at him along with his bullies hurtful words and his parents...
He tries to stay positive for the others but he worries he might not be able to for much longer...
Logan finally awoke from his nap, noticing the time and sighing out. Romans play. Shit.
He sat up and headed to Romans room, the brother was sitting up on his bed, staring out at the starry night while sipping another can of beer. Logan walked in, closing the door behind him.
"Have any spare?"
Roman glanced at Logan, grabbing a can from the side of his bed he threw it to the brother. Logan sat next to Roman, leaning on his side.
"I apologise" was all he needed to say. Roman nodded and the two went silent, sipping the only thing that made their problems go away for a short amount of time.
