Invitations

"What song shall I play this fine morning Jim? Well Basie I had a really swell sleep last night, so why not play a little number with some step to it! I think I have just the right thing here, something from the eighties!!

'Buffalo Stance' (turns up the mood in the lobby this fine morning.) I decided to make the invitations out of leaves Basie! I found some red ones, yellow and white ones and heck even still green crisp ones out there! You must not go out there Jim, not without me! I think I am old enough by now! Not quite yet young Jim. That's what you always say Basie, not fair! How about I get you many more leaves for your project, how does that sound? Ok sounds good Basie!"

As the morning continued, Basie would bring in a whole basket filled with different leaves for Jimmy to choose from. As though this was an image from a Sears Catalogue; there's young Jimmy square on the marble floor cutting and gluing the leaves together to semi paint and write on. Jimmy dressed in blue overalls with a white t-shirt underneath. Red shoes, kind of like he was an all-American boy! The perfect Fall image to sell, as though seen on a postcard or such... Many people would bow their hats and wave hello to both Jim and Basie as they entered the complex. Basie asks Jim, whom he would be inviting for this dinner? Jimmy pauses for a moment and begins to recall each person.

Jim begins with a few weeks prior when he came down to the foyer and seen the very wet couple, Aditya ( Deeta) & Dalbir Kapoor. It had to be evening as the windows shone stars a plenty for Jimmy to gaze at. His space the Attic had many windows, as though he was looking through an observatory into the skies for all eternity each and every night. Though early, Jim felt the need for some coco and headed down to see Basie. As he came out, he seen Basie carefully eyeing the young couple.

"I asked for a simple night out Dal, nothing fancy nothing major something fucking simple! I really do not know why you get so angry all the time, its as though nothing I do will ever be just right with you! That seems fitting to blame me for the wrongness, if that's even a word describing our lives. I've taken you across the world, I've taken you across the sea fuck I've taken you to New York for Fashion week Deeta! Exactly my point, and now were here! What's wrong with here, this place is immaculate! It has everything we could ask for, a gym, a café, a mini organic shop, there's a spa fuck there are even counsellors here amongst the relics of fine luxury! I'm bored Dal, and not pampered bored I'm simply bored!

Mr. & Mrs. Kapoor can I get your coats to the dry cleaners this evening? Yes, of course Basie, thank you! Can I interest you both in a terrace fire amongst the rain out there? How about it Deeta, we can have some wine and just talk. Sure, sounds good! I need a cigarette first, Basie do you happen to have a menthol? Why yes Mrs. Kapoor, here you are my dear. Ill meet you there dear!"

Jim waves with Basie goodbye and the Kapoors wave back with seemingly calmer motions than when they entered the complex.

The following morning some of the complex staff were putting on a brunch on the main level terrace. Many people were present as though they had been summoned to this event somehow. All the while welcoming the new tenant in loft fifty-eight, Heather Sailor. Her fashion look was a yellow sweater, green knit skirt with a cellphone in one hand and lit cigarette in the other. Her hair flowed curls of fireballs ready to pounce on the next nay-sayer. Some sort of a corporate shark she may be, Basie says to Jim. Heather does seem a bit unsure why she ended up here but tells her people to have her things brought to the loft.

"Good morning Ms., Sailor. We have your loft quite high up as requested. Thank you? You may call me Basie, Miss. Thank you Basie, now what is all this? Its brunch dear, we have this every time someone new comes to live at the Thomas Craig! Quaint!! I need my security to have access and that is it to my loft is that understood Basie? Why yes, of course Ms. Sailor." Heather grabs some sausages and waves to her entourage to follow her up. Corporate Shark indeed my dear boy, indeed Basie repeats. Jim grabs some food and playfully intertwines in and around the residents on the terrace. Running into Basie accidentally.

"Child you need to stay close to me, we are quite high up remember. Yeah Yeah- hey look there's those two from last night Basie! I see them, yes they spent the night out here in one of the veranda huts. No more fighting, but also no more words were spoken between the two I'm afraid. Shucks Basie, well I hope their day gets better! As do I Jim, now what do you have in sport today? Well, I think ill create an indoor garden in my space! That sounds delightful, what plants shall I grab for you before the frost comes? I can grab them Basie, they're just down there! (Jimmy points to the lower mainland) That's alright Jim, when im down there later ill grab whatever you'd like. Ok, I guess Basie. Hey Basie! Yes Jim? Do you think Mama will like the garden? I do Jim, when she comes home you can show her! Awesome. Thanks Basie!!"

That same day turned out to be quite the adventure for young Jimmy as he wandered a lot. He sees a man with red hair and a tan, reading lines to himself while pacing the Spa corridors. He stops to listen.

"You see me, you feel me, you want me you got me. Now push!! Now push!! Make it rain green all around me, surround me and flaunt me while I have thee you make me- Lets go! One step two step three step four ill kick your ass to the door. Want me- you got me Now push!! Flaunt me he says daddy, oh daddy make me happy no Go and Push! Spread me, like creamy eyes like McDreamy You push, NOW PUSH!! Lets Go! One step two step three step four ill lick your ass on the floor. Feel me, oh baby you want me Now push! Haven't I been satisfied with you in my eye id rather die- NOW PUSH! Bitch don't make spank you, I just wanna flank you. Trick me like wanker Ill make you beg and thank her Now push! Now Push! Lets Go! One step two step three step four ill stick your ass wanting more. You see me, oh baby! You want me, to see me Ill see you to see me baby don't hate me I just wanna push!! NOW PUSH!"

The man parades around in fishnet stockings and Pink High Heels with the Valentino Garavani logo for all to see. Too caught up in his own little world, he fails to notice Jimmy or Basie who stead fully approaches the boy. The man goes into the spa and the door closes.

"Jimmy what brings you to the Spa? I dunno Basie was just roaming around. Who was that? He's good for relieving my tensions child. Huh? (Clearing his throat) He is an artist and performs on stage. Oh, is that why he is playing dress up? Yes...Yes. But why is he playing dress up in the spa area? You know I am not sure Jim, but we can ask him when we see him again; how does that sound to you? Ok, yeah sounds good! Run along now Jim, ill see you at dinner."

Jimmy moseys off the spa level and out of sight. Basie removes his hat and enters the Spa, notably grinning ear to ear.

Jimmy makes his way to the staff kitchen where he often goes for a snack. He swiftly grabs some cookies off the cutting board table and is shoed away by an older laughing servant who seemingly adores the young lad! The ladies laugh and point to the little devil running amuck. Then he see's the gate door open to the servant picnic area. He had never been there before, and nor has he ever seen that gate open. He looks around to be sure no one is around and he makes his way to the opening. Reaching the handle to the gate he reaches up to open it a tad more when he is suddenly whisked behind the door as it swings open at full tilt!

"Look man I got what I got and you can't afford to be picky! I know, but Alex I need this! I can see that Oscar you look like shit! I mean worse than normal. Please man, I really need this fix."

Jimmy watches as this Alex fellow hands the other guy (Oscar) a tiny baggie. Thankfully the heavy gate door hides him from their vision. Alex tells Oscar to try not to kill himself, and he leaves the kitchen. In awe, Jimmy peers at this man. Oscar has two arms with tiny resemblances of stick digits in place of actual fingers. The arms are uneven and oddly deformed. Oscar's face had many scars and it appears the man couldn't see as he struggled more so than one would think with how to properly use the material given. Still with no one in sight, Jimmy is stuck behind this doorway forced to watch.

A brown paper bag the man pulls from his back side. Opening it he unveils a syringe, some blue liquid and alcohol wipes. Other paraphernalia is there but Jimmy doesn't know what they are. Oscar takes the baggie and gets some of the substance out and onto this little spoon like contraption, adds some water and heats it with his cigarette lighter. After already wiping his neck, Oscar manages the syringe in his stub sticks and sucks up the cooking product. In horror Jimmy watches the man inject the product into his neck. The materials fall slowly to the floor and the man (Oscar) falls out the gate door.

Jimmy peaks his head around to see if the man is alright. No movement, no sound; however the man is breathing. Jimmy shuts the gate before anyone else could see and he scampers away. Fright courses through the young lad, as though he had had this feeling before. Not recognizing it completely he makes his way up to his space. Where he finds Basie waiting! "You almost went outside alone, didn't you Jim? Yes Sir! Then you seen things that poured scare into your eyes I reckon! I did Sir. Jim my boy, you must listen when I tell you not to do things. You must wait for me, before you explore the outside. Basie, I seen a man.... Let it be Jim, let it be. But Basie! (Basie turns around with stance and repeats) Let it be boy!

Oh gosh, now is that anyway to talk to the young man. Oh my Mrs. Hinwood I didn't see you there! Hello there, what's your name? I'm Jimmy, what's yours? I'm Marta Hinwood from suite twenty-one! (With shock and dismay in his voice Basie inquires more) What brings you to the attic Mrs. Hinwood? I discovered this little lift behind your desk while looking for you and well I found you! I've never had someone come up here to find me but my Mama, Papa and Basie before. Wow so cool please come in! Ahh not tonight young Jim, its time for your bed. I shall bring Mrs. Hinwood around another day. But Basie! To bed Jim and a goodnight. (Basie shuts the door to the space) What a dear young man, where are his parents? They do a lot of out-of-town work Mrs., Hinwood, please may I take you to your loft? Well sure, but I was looking for you Basie I have a request. Oh, yes of course how may I help? Well, I am in need of some cleaning products and with Rock out of town I can't get away from the children to get them. Not to worry Mrs. Hinwood I shall grab those for you first thing in the morning. Why thank you Basie, you truly are wonderful. How are the children Mrs. Hinwood? Please call me Marta, they are wonderful growing so fast with such wonder in their eyes. (Arriving down on her loft level via the elevator) Here you are Marta, so nice running into you this evening. It was a pleasure, and I look forward to meeting young Jimmy again. As do I look forward to that as well dear, goodnight. Goodnight Basie."

Seemingly shook at the encounter, Basie makes his way back up to check on Jim one last time. Popping his head into the space ever so quietly he sees the boy fast asleep. The fake flowers that hang amongst the real plants flow as the air sneaks in through the open window to the stars. A dreamcatcher softly spins atop his head. Basie closes the door and moves to inspect the lift. He fastens the gate and locks the hatch, seeing nothing out of the ordinary he leaves to the regular elevator.

"All those people Basie! Why Jim, why those people? Because they all seemed so lonely and sad Basie. With it being Thanksgiving soon, I think they should be with me and you because often we are alone too! That's a good idea Jim, but these folk seem like quite the selective bunch. They all were memorable Basie and well I want them to be noticed. You mean you'd like to be noticed my boy. Yes, please Basie oh please! Ok ill help you invite them. So, you need #21 Marta- #44 for Deeta & Dal- #4 for Alex with #67 for Oscar- #58 for Ike and #58 for Heather. Thanks Basie this will be great!"

Basie takes a moment to think and, in that moment, he notices the large chandelier amongst the beams flicker. The record player begins a lullaby signifying its bedtime for Jimmy. "Nighttime already wow I feel like the day just started Basie! Time flies boy when you're having fun!"
