SEVEN. the very first night

HUNTER'S BALLS must've dropped that night because he was able to ask Maddie to the homecoming dance with no problem at all and she said yes.

So, Rhonda, Michelle, and Maddie ran their hands through the plethora of dresses and suits that Michelle would take up to fit them before the dance that night.

"Is this dust or dandruff?" Rhonda questioned.

"Ghosts can have allergies. That's good to know." Maddie sighed.

"Charley can't peanut M&M's." Michelle said, "He'll stay swell up if he eats 'em."

"Really?" Maddie questioned.

"Yeah." Rhonda sighed, "So are you thinking dress or suit?"

Maddie grabbed a red dress from the rack and held it close to her body.

"Dress." She smiled.

"Well, that's a statement for a homecoming dance. Surprised you'd go frilly— that's really."

Maddie chuckled, "I'm surprised you're going to this thing at all. It doesn't totally track with you. Well, how can one revolt if they've never assimilated?"

"She gives that same weak reasoning every year." Michelle smiled.

"I guess I'm just surprised you guys are throwing yourselves into this. You know, Hunter's acting like it's first time he's ever even heard of a dance."

"Yeah, well, he went to the dance with Michelle once and that was the last time he had a date. So brava, I suppose, for helping him tackle this unfinished business." Rhonda sighed, "Wally soon came and it was over for him. We don't always get second chances on this side."

"I have a question, but you guys can't laugh." Maddie said.

"Okay, well, I can't guarantee anything, but shoot." Rhonda said.

A beat of silence passed before Maddie quipped once more, "Can ghost have sex?"

Rhonda and Michelle looked at each other with a smile before chuckling.

"I said we can swell, didn't I?" Rhonda asked.

"Oh. So you've all—"

"We've been going through puberty for a long time. We have needs. We have a past. We all do." Rhonda added.

"I didn't even know we could have sex until Wally told me... after he heard it from Rhonda." Michelle said.

Rhonda and Michelle shared a laugh before turning to face Maddie.

"We all do right?" Rhonda questioned and nothing, "Maddie Nears, did you die a virgin?"

Michelle nudged Rhonda's shoulder, "It's not a bad thing. I mean... I did too."

"It wasn't bad was it?" Rhonda questioned, "Why don't you tell her I'm sure she's dying to know how it works."

"As long as you keep out the extreme details..." Maddie paused, "I'm down to listen."

Michelle sighed, "Fine. It was way before you got here."

THE PAST.

Wally ran down the hallways of Split River in search of Michelle. He'd been stuck in this place for almost six years now and yet, he was still learning things that he could or yet... still could do in this place.

He finally found the girl in the art room, painting along with the other students who couldn't see her. He opened the door and smiled as he made his way towards her.

She turned at the sounds of footsteps and looked up at the boy with a smile. He cupped her cheeks and pulled her in close, meeting her halfway as he placed a kiss upon her lips.

He seemed giddy. Like something had changed in the hour she was last with him.

"You will not believe what Rhonda just told me."

Michelle turned back towards her painting, "Lay it on me."

"We can have sex!"

She furrowed her brows and raised them slowly as she faced him, "What?"

"She told me that ghost can have sex. That we could have sex!" Wally grabbed a vacant chair and pulled it towards Michelle's side, "Can we please have sex?"

"Right now?"

Wally raised his brows, pointing towards her, "No. Sex between us should be... natural. So... let's go on a date."

"A date?"

"Yes." He smiled, standing to his feet, "A date. Bring your paint boards—"

"A canvas?"

"If that's what you want to call 'em, then yes. Bring those and all that painting shit you use and meet me in front of the school at seven." He smiled.

He rushed out of the art room and Michelle alone until she decided that she could no longer work on her painting in peace.

She left the classroom in search for Rhonda and found her sitting in the gym as she watched the other living people playing basketball during their class period.

"Hey, Lemon Drop." Rhonda smiled, "How's the art?"

"Couldn't finish it." Michelle sighed, hopping up on the stage in the gym and sitting next to the girl.

"A shame. I was told it was going to be the best—"

"Why'd you tell Wally that ghost could have sex?"

Rhonda turned and smiled, "Because you can." She laughed.

"How would you know?"

"Does that matter? I just know that you can. Did he ask you about it?"

"He wants to have sex tonight."

"Do you?"

"I just found out we could have sex for the first time. I don't know what I want."

Rhonda nodded before looking at the girl with a smile, "Did you both die virgins?"

"I did... I don't know if he did."

"Trust me, he had to. He's in love with you. I'm sure he would want his first time to be with you, pudding pop."

And that was true. He didn't want his first time to be with anyone else either. He wanted to be with Michelle for as long as he could. That's something they both wanted.

And because of that, Michelle held her canvas and paint supplies underneath her arm as she made her way towards the front of the school.

Wally had been sitting in the golf cart tapping at the wheel when he finally took notice of his girlfriend.

Whether or not they had sex that night, Wally wanted Michelle to have a good time. That was the whole point of her bringing the canvas.

Wally stood up from the vehicle and smiled, "Ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be." She sighed.

Wally grabbed some of the supplies from her hands and the two of them headed back inside the building and Wally led them to the empty music room.

Wally had a bag of his own. He opened it up and laid a checked print blanket on the floor, presumably from the lost and found and a couple of pillows and cushions from around the auditorium.

He looked up at Michelle who had been awfully quite their entire walk there.

He sighed, standing to his feet, "We don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with. If it happens it happens and if it doesn't... it doesn't, okay?"

Michelle gave him small smile. Wally returned it and reached out for her hand.

"Wanna paint?"

She took Wally's hand and the two of them sat on the floor in the music room. They say in a comfortable silence for a while until Wally turned his painting towards her.

She furrowed her brows and titled her head to the side to try and figure out what it was.

"Are you kidding?" Wally asked, chuckling, "It's us! Watching the sunset."

"I could differentiate the stick people." She smiled.

"Stick people?" He questioned, looking down at the painting, "These are stick people? I think I captured your essence beautifully."

Michelle smiled, "Yes, of course. I totally see it now."

As Michelle continued to laugh and stare at Wally's painting, he took the opportunity to lean in and capture her lips with his. She was taken aback for a moment but soon relaxed into the kiss. His arms wrapped around her waist and he pulled her closer to him. The kiss was slow and tender, filled with unspoken emotions.

As Wally deepened the kiss, Michelle's hand found its way to the back of his neck, pulling him closer as they continued to explore each other's lips. Wally's hands roamed over the curvature of her hips and gently pushed her down against a pillow that he had placed there earlier.

Wally pulled away from her, his eyes fixed on hers, "Are you sure about this?" He asked, his voice low and serious.

Michelle nodded, "I'm sure."

With that, Wally leaned in to kiss her again, his lips hot and hungry. Michelle responded eagerly, her hands moving to tug at his shirt, desperate to feel his skin against hers.

As they kissed, Wally's hands moved lower, tracing the curves of her thighs before slipping under her shirt. Michelle shivered at his touch.

Suddenly, Wally pulled away, his expression serious, "We don't have to do this." He said, "I don't want to push you too far."

Michelle shook her head, slipping her hands away from his shirt and onto his face, cupping his cheeks and caressing them gently.

"I'm sure. I promise."

Wally's face softened, and he leaned in to capture her lips again, this time with more urgency. Michelle moaned softly as he deepened the kiss, his hands roaming freely over her body.

Without a word, Wally began to remove her shirt. Michelle's breath caught in her throat as he leaned in to kiss her once again.

Michelle's heart was pounding as Wally's lips left hers and trailed down her neck, planting soft kisses along the way. She tilted her head back, giving him better access to her skin.

Without a word, Wally removed his own shirt. Michelle's eyes widened as she took in the sight of him, her hands reaching out to grab a hold the nape of his neck, pulling him back in for another kiss.

As the kiss continued, Michelle became lost in the sensations that consumed her. She felt Wally's hand slide up her back, his fingers entangling themselves in her hair as he pulled her closer to him.

As the kiss deepened, Michelle felt her senses heighten, the sound of her own heartbeat pounding in her ears.

Their kiss was passionate but gentle, full of tenderness and care. It was a moment that neither of them wanted to end, a moment where they could forget about everything else and just be lost in each other.

THE PRESENT.

"Are you gonna tell her about the part where he actually put his dick in you, lemon drop?" Rhonda asked.

"She said not to go into detail." Michelle answered.

"I thank you for that." Maddie smiled.

"But seriously... did you die a virgin?" Rhonda questioned once more.

"Uh... hello?" Hunter called from the stairs.

Rhonda and Michelle turned to find both he and Wally standing on the stairs. Maddie keeping her back turned from the boys.

"I just wanted to come and check in and make sure that, um, with everything going on." Hunter sighed.

Wally patted his back, "He wanted to know if this date was still on."

"You're not going to this one alone, Hunter." Maddie reassured.

The two boys shared their excitement from the stairs before rushing out.

The two other girls teased Maddie once more before nightfall fell upon Spilt River.

Michelle stood in the girls bathroom, pulling at her dress to make sure it felt at least comfortable enough for her to last throughout the night.

The door soon opened at Michelle saw Maddie from the mirror. The blonde gave the other a smile, the red dress standing out in comparison of the dull bathroom walls.

"You look great." Maddie smiled.

Michelle quickly turned, "Are you sure?"

Maddie furrowed her brows before taking small steps towards Michelle, "Obviously. Look at you."

"You're not just saying that?"

"Michelle?"

Michelle shut her eyes before sighing, "I'm sorry... Uh... Jennifer— I've never really liked all this fancy stuff. Especially after... the time before I died."

THE PAST.

Wally had asked Michelle to the homecoming dance of 1982 two months prior to the event.

And when Michelle decided to get a dress two weeks before the event, she decided that she would ask Jennifer to tag along to go out to pick a dress.

Michelle had saved up three hundred dollars to buy the perfect dress for that night. She was excited. It was her first adult purchase without the help of her grandmother.

But Jennifer didn't care. For months she had tried to get Michelle to call of the date with Wally so she could crash the homecoming dance, see Wally, make him feel better that Michelle wasn't going, and BOOM! Wally Clark and Jennifer Daniels together. That was her plan.

So, Michelle tried on dress after dress and didn't question why Jennifer didn't like it, but she was already on her eighth dress try on and was growing tired.

She stepped out of the dressing room wearing a yellow, ball gown-esque dress. She deeply sighed and turned towards Jennifer.

"What about this one?"

Jennifer turned her face in disgust, "I don't know... does it fit?"

"Yes."

Jennifer stood and made her way towards Michelle. She turned the girl around until they were both facing the mirror.

"I don't think it fits." Jennifer sighed, "Could you not zip it?"

"I couldn't reach the zipper." Michelle whispered, "Could you just... zip for me. Maybe it'll fit better?"

"Or maybe... it doesn't fit." Jennifer softly smiled, "I'm not trying to make you feel bad, Michelle. That's the last thing I want, but nothing fits. Maybe would you could try the thrift store by your house."

"I saved three hundred to buy a dress. I want to get it from here."

"In that case, we'll all night."

Michelle turned toward Jennifer, "Did you get your dress from the thrift?"

"No, because my dress fit me."

Michelle nodded, "I'll just try another time."

Michelle left Jennifer's side and back into the dressing room. Once she was inside, she pressed her back against the and shut her eyes.

And for days Michelle hadn't bothered to go and look for a dress. She didn't speak. word about homecoming until the day of where Jennifer asked if she found a dress during their lunch period.

"Uh... no." Michelle answered, "I don't think I'm going to go anymore."

"I'm sorry, Michelle." Jennifer sighed, "Have you told Wally?"

"I'm going to after lunch. He was really excited to go, so I'm just... trying to figure out a way to without me."

Jennifer smiled, "I'll go with him. In your honor. Don't you have a painting on display there?"

"Yeah, I do." She nodded, "Are you sure you're down to with Wally?"

"Anything for you." Jennifer smiled, "You want him to have the time of his life and I will make sure he has that while thinking of you the entire time. Call it a friendship date."

Michelle sighed and glanced behind her. Wally standing by the corridor with some of the other students.

She turned her gaze back over to Jennifer and gave her a small smile and nod, "I appreciate it. I'll... go tell. Right now."

Michelle stood from the table and threw the her lunch tray on the rack as she made her way towards Wally.

She stopped nearby and she caught her attention with ease, but instead of going to him, she left the corridor and made her way towards her locker.

Wally furrowed his brows and followed his girlfriend. He soon approached Michelle's locker, noticing her slumped against it with a defeated look on her face.

"What's wrong?" He asked.

Michelle let out a deep sigh. "I can't find a dress for the dance."

Rather so, she found plenty that she liked but none of them fit according to Jennifer.

"Well, we can go look for one together after school. It's not too late to find something."

Michelle shook her head, "I don't think I want to go anymore, Wally."

She was frustrated with herself, so much so that her eyes began to burn. She really didn't want to cry, especially in front of him about something that seemed so stupid.

"But we've been talking about this for weeks. I already bought the tickets and we have everything planned out."

"I know, I'm sorry," Michelle said, "Jennifer... said she'll go with you. And I know you'll best time with her."

Wally wasn't took focused on the idea of homecoming anymore, but on the fact that his girlfriend was trying extremely hard not to cry.

"Michelle—"

"You're going to have a great and take tons of photos for my wall." She spoke, with a small smile, her voice shaky.

Wally could see that Michelle was struggling to hold back her tears, and it broke his heart. He desperately wanted to comfort her and make everything better, but he didn't know how.

It was so much more than a dress. It was the fact that her best friend watched her try on eight different dresses that she loved and Jennifer made sure to let her know that none of them worked for her. That one of them fit, that Michelle didn't look good in anything she wore.

Michelle sniffled and wiped her eyes. "I need to go, I have math next period." She said, her voice barely above a whisper, "I'll see you later, okay?"

And she left Wally's side without him answering her. And she wouldn't show her face for the rest of the school day.

THE PRESENT.

Michelle sighed, "He didn't go to the dance. He came over and watched Fast Times. I didn't realize what Jennifer was doing until later. Until Rhonda told me. And I don't know why she did it, but it worked. It still works sometimes."

"Does Wally know?" Maddie asked.

"No." She answered, "But I don't think he needs to know. Because I know when I'm with Wally I'm very much loved. That no matter what wear or what I do, he'll love me. But sometimes, when I do things like this, like homecoming, like the dresses, it can get to me."

Maddie gave the girl a small smile and grabbed her hands, "You are very beautiful, Michelle."

"And so are you." She smiled, "And I hope you have the best time with Hunter tonight. I know a lot is happening, right now, but things like this help. Makes you feel alive again."

"I'll try."

"Enough of the sad shit. We've got two great guys waiting for us and a dance that could last a lifetime." Michelle laughed.

Michelle and Maddie left the bathroom with the arms locked with each other as they made their way towards the front of the school.

Maddie soon separated from Michelle's side as Hunter approached the duo.

Wally, who had been driving the golf cart, made his way towards Michelle. A small box in his hands that held the same corsage he gave her ever year.

"You are beautiful." He said, taking her hand.

"Thank you." Michelle said, smiling back at him. "You don't look too bad yourself."

Wally smiled, opening the white box and slipped the corsage onto her wrist.

She smiled, looking down at the same corsage she had every time.

"Come on!" Hunter shouted from the golf cart, "We've got a dance to go to!"

Wally and Michelle's hands still clasped together as they made their way towards the golf cart that drove the group to the back of them gym.

And that small area was packed.

Maddie had separated herself from the group to speak to Simon before returning to the punch bowl that Michelle, Wally, Hunter, and Charley stood by.

"So... what do we do now?" She asked.

Hunter smiled, "We dance."

Wally smiled, grabbing Michelle's hands as he pulled her towards the dance floor. And they dance for what felt like hours before Michelle left Wally's side to grab a drink from the small table. When she arrived she grabbed a cup and finally looked up.

Once again, Jennifer stood on the other side of the table.

She was a chaperone of the dance. She wanted to volunteer. She thought that she could walk into the school for the first time since she graduated.

Michelle watched as Jennifer soon grew worried, almost panicked. Her husband, Walter Macaulay, soon joined their side.

He began rubbing her back before she left the gym.

Michelle could follow or she could stay.

So, she followed. She follows Jennifer outside, where she found her and her husband talking by the bench.

She took careful steps and sat on the bench close by.

"I thought you could do this." Walter spoke.

"I haven't been inside that school since she died, Walter." Jennifer said, "I thought I could do it. I really did."

Walter rested his hands on Jennifer's shoulders. Trying to calm her nerves, but nothing was working.

"She was my best fucking friend." She sighed, "And... that school... this school is cursed. First Michelle and then her boyfriend died on the field. Do you know how fucked up that is? I never even had the chance to say goodbye."

After all that. All the crying and dry heaving, she wasn't even sorry. She wasn't. This was a show. A show for her husband who she already had and kids she  was able to have.

Michelle knew she wouldn't never get a chance to her what she wanted from Jennifer.

So, Michelle stood to her feet. She didn't want to see Jennifer's fake sob story. She had already lived it.

No matter what, Michelle would never get the answers she wanted and Jennifer would never be sorry.

Jennifer only cried to put on a show. To gain sympathy from anyone who cared and that's what she got.

It didn't matter how much Michelle would crying and beg for answers, she wouldn't get them. All she could do is try and move and live this life for as long as she could. Or in Maddie's words: Live their death.

So she would.

IT DIDN'T take Wally long to find Michelle. She was making her way back towards the dance and he met her halfway.

"You disappeared."

"I'm really sorry." She apologized, "I really didn't want to ruin your night. You're always so excited this."

He softly smiled, "Don't worry about it."

"But I have. So, I set something up for us. Just as a way to say sorry." She smiled, holding her hand out, "If you're willing to come with me."

Wally gave her a small smile before grabbing her hand a followed behind her. She lead him towards the auditorium. She had somehow convinced Mina to just leave for 2 hours tops.

She led Wally towards the stage and their sat a pull out couch for one of the plays coming up and Michelle's paintings.

Wally locked his lips before facing Michelle, "We're going to paint?"

"Yeah, take a seat."

Wally gave the girl a small smile and nod before grabbing a canvas and paint and sat on the pull out couch in its bed form.

Michelle soon joined and as she opened the paint she looked up at Wally.

"Do you want to paint in that suit?" She asked, "You wouldn't want to get paint all over that suit, would you?"

"I guess not."

Wally began to take his suit jacket off before Michelle scooted closer to him.

"Let me help."

As Michelle helped Wally take off his suit jacket and untied his tie, their eyes locked onto each other. The air between instantly changing.

Without a word, Wally leaned in and captured Michelle's lips in a deep and passionate kiss. She responded eagerly, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him closer.

His hand snuck behind her pushing the canvas and the supplies onto the floor. She pulled away slightly, catching her breath as she looked up into his eyes. Wally's expression was filled with longing and desire, matching her own.

"We were never painting, were we?" He asked.

Michelle gave him a small smile and chuckled, "No, but I had to set it up because were natural."

Without a word, he leaned in again, deepening the kiss even further. His hands ran through her hair, pulling her closer to him.

As they continued to kiss, Wally gently rolled Michelle over onto her back, him now over hovering over her, never breaking their embrace.

Wally pulled away from Michelle for a moment, his eyes locked onto hers as he began to unbutton his shirt.

Once his shirt was off, Wally lowered himself back down to Michelle, their lips meeting once again.

Wally's hands trailed down to the hem of Michelle's dress, his fingers inching their way up her thighs.

Without breaking their kiss, she pulled away from him slightly and lifted her arms, allowing Wally to pull her dress over her head. It fell to the floor with a soft rustle.

Michelle reached down to unbutton Wally's pants. Wally let out a low growl of approval as he pulled back slightly to allow her to remove his pants.

As Michelle undid the last button of his pants, Wally couldn't resist any longer. He leaned in for another kiss, his lips capturing hers.

Time seemed to stand still. It always did in a place like this. And it was said a thousand times, but no one in this ghost group could ever understand what Wally and Michelle had.

They would never have what they did and they would never have the experiences that they did.

What Wally and Michelle had was special (and not just the sex), they had something that Jennifer and her "Wally" would never have.

Love and each other.
