FOUR. lucky in the most unlikely way
THE NECKLACE Wally wore had actually belonged to Michelle before she died.
At Michelle's funeral, her mother decided that the necklace would find its way home. That Michelle was Wally's home, that, at least, is what her mother told him.
Wally could remember the exact day he gave Michelle the necklace. He bought it at JCPenny and he could remember the smile on Michelle's face when he gave it to her.
THE PAST.
Wally and Michelle hung out often, they had been dating for awhile at this point, possibly a couple of months and Jennifer was there to see it all.
Michelle always made time for the both of them, she'd even say that she didn't have time for herself because she was always with one or the other, sometimes even both.
This time around, it was just Wally and Michelle at her house. He and Michelle sat on her couch watching the latest episode of The Facts of Life and Michelle could practically feel Wally nerves radiating off of him.
She pushed herself off of him and turned to face him. She sat crisscrossed and gave him a small smile.
"What's up with you?" Michelle questioned.
"What are you talking about?"
"You seem nervous is all." She smiled, "I don't think I've ever seen you physically shake like this before."
Wally sat upright, his hands now shoved into his pocket.
"Fine, fine." He sighed, "You caught me."
Michelle furrowed her brows and Wally finally pulled his hands out of his pocket and there in his hands was a small, velvet box.
Michelle's eyes widened in surprise as she stared at the box in Wally's hands.
"What's that?" She asked, her voice filled with wonder.
Wally opened the box, revealing a delicate gold necklace with a circle pendant tying it together.
"It's something for you," He said, his voice trembling slightly, "I wanted to get you something special."
She looked up at him with a smile, "Wally, it's beautiful. Thank you."
He gestured of her to turn around. As she did so, she pulled her blonde hair into her hands, much longer than the shoulder cut she would later have.
Wally took the necklace out of the box and gently laid it around Michelle's neck. His calloused fingers running against the nape of her neck as he fastened the necklace.
Once done she turned around, dropping her hair down her back.
"It looks stunning on you." He smiled.
Michelle blushed at his words and touched the necklace, feeling the coolness of the gold against her skin.
"I can't believe you did this," She said, still in awe, "I would've totally gotten you something if I known."
"Don't worry about. You've done enough already."
Wally looked at Michelle, his heart beating faster than ever. He couldn't help but feel so lucky to have her in his life. Michelle was his best friend, his girlfriend, the love of his short life. He reached out to gently caress her cheek and leaned in, pressing his lips softly against hers.
At first, the kiss was slow and gentle, a sweet expression of his love for her. As their lips met again and again, the intensity grew. Michelle's hands found their way to Wally's neck, pulling him in closer, deepening the kiss.
Wally wrapped his arms around Michelle's waist, holding her tightly as their bodies pressed together. The kiss was passionate and sweet, a perfect moment shared between two people who loved each other deeply.
As they finally pulled away, Wally looked into Michelle's eyes, his heart bursting with love for her.
And Jennifer was there to see it all. She was coming over to hang out with Michelle and she knew that Wally was going to be there. She's hadn't know that he was going to jump up and surprise Michelle with the necklace thought.
Jennifer watched the entire interaction through the window of Michelle's home. Her eyes wide and face almost red which anger.
How could she? Jennifer thought. How the hell could Michelle accept a gift should a glorious as that?
In Jennifer's eyes, Wally could do no wrong. It was all Michelle's fault. It was her fault that Wally fell for her. It was her fault that she could see the clear true love that Wally and herself (Jennifer) had for each other. Everything led back to Michelle.
But Jennifer couldn't just stand there and watch the couple, so she knocked on the front door.
She saw Michelle spring to her feet with a fairly large smile and she soon opened the door.
"Oh, hey!" Michelle smiled, "I thought you were coming over later?"
"Can't miss the new Three's Company episode can we?"
Michelle smiled down at her friend, "Guess not. Wally's here. Is that okay?"
"The more the merrier."
"Look at what he got me." Michelle smiled, whispering her words, "Isn't it beautiful?"
If Jennifer could've done anything to Michelle, she would've done it right then and there, but Wally would hate her forever and her chances would've been out the window.
So all Jennifer did was smile and compliment the necklace and stepped inside.
"Hi, Wally." Jennifer smiled, waving towards him.
Wally turned from the couch, his eyes leaving Blair Warner's and onto Jennifer's. He gave her a small smile, holding his hand up and flicking gently to the side before turning back towards the TV.
Wally had no interest in Jennifer and only spoke to her when Michelle was around. He never really went out his way to speak to the girl unless he really need to.
But to Jennifer, it was so much more. So much more than a wave and a smile. He had practically kissed her on the lips and told Michelle to fuck off.
Jennifer was delusional and that's what made her do and say the most deranged things to Michelle that she didn't deserve.
THE PRESENT.
The group sat around the gym once more. As per usual, it was another day, another meeting. Nothing different besides the topic of today's discussion.
"Maddie." Mr. Martin called, "How is the obituary coming? Is there anything you'd like to share yet with the group?"
He had made everyone write an obituary. Some more serious than others... Hunter's obituary read along the lines of, "snapped my neck for 20 bucks... totally wasn't worth it.""
"Uh, it's still a work in progress." She answered, "Sorry. I, uh, I feel like I barely slept last night."
"Gosh, it sounds like you spent one too many days in a row inside this school."
"Is there another option?"
"There is, actually." He smiled, "Gang, I know it's not usually for another month or so, but time is relative here, is it not? So what do you say? Who's up for another field day?"
"Yes! Hell yes!" Wally cheered, "Field day. Let's go."
"Please kill me." Rhonda muttered.
"I love you, Mr. M."
Mr. Martin smiled, "Everybody needs exercise. And as you'll come to learn, we ghosts occasionally need to "exorcise" a few demons too. Am I right, guys?"
"Yeah, no. I don't do sports." Maddie sighed.
"Well, Maddie, I hear you, and as the resident jock, I am going to choose not to be offended by that." Wally smiled, "But I just have two words for you, mm-kay? American Gladiators. Blaze. Turbo. Nitro? Are you— come on. Nobody's heard of this show? Michelle come on, we've seen it a hundred times."
"I just— watch it because you enjoy it." She smiled, "You're personal inspiration for field day. That I do know."
"Leave her alone, you guys." Rhonda called, "She doesn't want to play tug of war unless it's to rip her ex-boyfriend limb to limb. Or wait— has somebody's plot thickened? Do tell. Who do we have in our crosshairs now?"
Mr. Martin was quick to end the conversation and let the group know when the Field Day would begin.
Michelle had been long gone from the gym and held a baseball bat in her hands. It was her go to on Field Day for many different reasons.
She dragged the bat against the pavement when she heard a vehicle driving close by.
She turned and found Wally driving the school's golf cart and stopped the machine once he was by her side.
"Ready to smash some dummy's?" He asked with a smile.
"I think so."
Michelle sometimes had a hard day when it came to Field Day. Sometimes her anger would be released in a way that was positive.
She would feel absolutely free once she was able to get her anger out.
And other times she would let the anger get the best of her. To the point where she would find herself leaving Field Day in order to start balling in the locker room where she'd died.
It was always 50/50 and Wally would try his best to let her know that it would be okay.
"Hop in. I'll take you there."
"Well, thank you sir." She smiled.
She hopped into the golf cart and Wally v began driving towards the field. He made two others stops when he saw Hunter and Maddie making their way there as well.
And after plowing through the jugs of water, their Field Day officially began.
Maddie, Charley, and Hunter sat on the bleachers near the vending machines where they watched the others enjoying their Field Day.
Michelle and Wally bashing the benches close by with metal baseball bats and shouting incoherences.
"Maybe you should talk to Michelle." Charley suggested to Maddie, "Not everyone is trustworthy."
Maddie stood from her spot on the bleachers and made her way towards Michelle.
Wally left the girl alone to "get more shit to break" and soon, Michelle sat down on the ground. Maddie soon joining her side.
A beat of silence passed before Maddie cleared her throat to speak, "I— I was wondering what the story was between you and your friend."
"Why?" Michelle asked, her hands now rested against her neck.
"I'm just curious. I was more just wanting to get some answers."
"Our stories aren't the same, Maddie. I don't think I can you the answers you want to hear."
"No, I know that. I just—"
"My death can't help solve yours."
"Honestly, I hope not." Maddie sighed, "I just— I had a friendship with my teacher. Someone I trusted. I guess I'm just trying to figure out what it all meant."
Silence grew between the two before Michelle sighed and looked up from her shoes.
"You see those two girls over there?" Michelle asked, pointing towards two teenagers girls talking by the fence.
"The Macaulay twins?" Maddie questioned, "They're juniors. I've only ever seen them in the hallways."
"Those girls are my best friends kids. And every day I watch my best friend drop her kids off and pick them up. Every day." Michelle explained, "Jennifer and I had known each other since we were five. We never really apart until she became a cheerleader our freshman year. She... killed me in the locker room and even after I died she sat on top of me and choked until my neck was bruised. I was already dead and she continued to choke me. And now, when I'm nervous or when I get too anxious, I can sometimes feel her choking me and that's why I'm always touching my neck, so I can try bring myself back down to reality."
"Did you know why she killed you?"
Michelle shook her head, "I always assumed that I did something wrong or maybe she's set up... something. I wanna know why. I know why she was never caught. I wanna why she did it. I wanna know everything. And I'll never get that chance. I'll never know and she will never turn herself in. She will be never sorry. And she'll only feel sorry if she's caught, but she will be caught. She has a family who loves and trust her. Just like I did."
Michelle finally turned to have Maddie her hands still resting on her neck, "I learned that you can't trust everyone, no matter how much love them. No matter how much you trust them. I learned that a little too late... and maybe if I had known sooner... I would have my own life, with my own family like her."
"With Wally?"
"I don't think I could've prevented Wally's death. So, maybe not, but don't I let myself think that far, not anymore now that he's here." She answered, "I can only be thankful, in a way, that we're here together. It's odd to feel lucky in that." Michelle sighed, "But it's not about that. That's not what you wanted to hear. You wanted to know about Jennifer and I. And all I can say is that you can't trust everyone. But here, in our ghost world... you can. I don't think anything bad can happen here. Even when we pass on and it's all over, nothing bad could ever happen."
And just like that, Michelle's story was out there for Maddie. For Maddie to now question.
Michelle seemed... Michelle was too sweet to ever piss anyone off to the extent of killing her. In Maddie's mind and from Michelle's explanation, Jennifer had done what she did out of spite.
And Maddie felt horrible. Michelle's story was sad... any unjust acts were horrible and here she sat with a girl in the Murder Party Club.
