ELEVEN. the only dream you seek
WALLY CLARK found his girlfriend Michelle Richards death in the girls locker room.
He remembered seeing a small pool of blood by her head, but her ultimate cause of death had been asphyxiation.
Her best friend, Jennifer Daniels had finally had enough of Michelle and killed Michelle on October 31st, 1983. Two days before Michelle's birthday.
She hit, Michelle in the head with a fire extinguisher and when they didn't kill her, she turned the girl around a choked her until she felt the life lift itself from her body.
But, Jennifer never hit Michelle hard enough for a pool of blood to lay next to the girls body.
Michelle was hit in the back of the head once more and that's where the pool of blood came from. But Jennifer had only hit Michelle once. That was it.
He wanted to make sure that Michelle was dead for his sake.
He knew how much Wally meant to Jennifer and he knew how much Michelle meant to him.
Killing Michelle gave Jennifer the boy of his dreams.
Killing Michelle gave Hunter Bryan the girl he longed for.
THE PRESENT.
Bad dreams weren't rare to any of the school spirits. They had died and what came with death and the ghost world was the lingering thought of why. Why did it happen? Why did it happen to me? What did I do to deserve this?
For years, Michelle Richards had always wondered why. But now, she wondered why her dream last night had scared so badly.
She was frightened. Nothing like that had ever occurred in her dreams and she never really dreamt about her death until now.
And the person who had acted on it.
Jennifer killed Michelle, but she didn't take the final blow. However did, wanted to make sure that Jennifer had done what she said she would. And she had.
But why didn't Michelle remember that? She could've sworn that she had seen Jennifer sitting on top of her dead body and continued to choke her to death even when Jennifer had felt Michelle's soul practically falling out of her hands.
She was there with Hunter. She wasn't alone. He had sat with her in the very spot she had died in until she was ready to leave. But why did everything feel so different?
She was so engrossed in her mind that she hadn't been paying much mind to what Wally, Rhonda, and Charley had been talking about with Mr. Martin.
None of them had felt what that had whenever Janet crossed over. When Dawn crossed over, they could practically feel her spirit moving on. It was never like that with Janet.
And the trio kept throwing questions towards Mr. Martin that he seemingly didn't have any answers to. He was growing frustrated with them and it was evident.
"It's painful to constantly be thinking about it!" Mr. Martin shouted, "Right? To— to relive it all."
"Painful how?" Rhonda questioned.
Silence arose as Mr. Martin stood from his seat, "The day I died, I made a mistake. I turned my back on a student for a split second, and there was an error, a fatal error. There was a fire. I managed— I managed to save my class, but not myself."
"Doesn't that make you a hero then?" Rhonda asked, "A martyr? It wasn't even your fault."
"I was the teacher. I should have been paying closer attention. I should have known what was going on. Instead my— my students had to live with the memory... of seeing— seeing all that." He paused, "Let's just say that I failed them, and I don't wanna fail all of you too. I have spent the last 60 years trying to help you all. You know, I— I may not have chosen to be here, but I tried my very best to make this time count, to make it better for you."
Rhonda quickly spoke up, "He's right. He has done a lot to try to help us over the years."
"Like mock trails and obituaries?" Charley questioned.
"I realize how disappointing it is not to have all the answers." Mr. Martin said, "I wish I could be of more help. But this— this is unprecedented. I wish I had more answers. I don't."
Silence grew between the group and soon enough, Wally stood to his feet and left the gym.
Soon, everyone departed, one by one.
Michelle left the gym and found Wally sitting in the hallway. She soon sat down next to him with a hefty sigh.
"It's totally weird not having Dawn around all the time, right?" Wally sighed, "Everyone is really just upset and confused. But you talked to her, like, right before, um... poof."
Michelle turned her head slowly, "I only told her that she was a good person. She technically, spoke to Maddie last. And for the longest time I've always thought... that my death my fault and I wanted Dawn that... her death wasn't her fault. I guess she finally heard what she needed to hear."
The two of them sat in silence and Michelle rested her head against Wally's shoulder.
"What would you do if the one person you trusted with everything in you, was the one who completely broke you?" She asked.
This wasn't about Jennifer.
This was about the nightmare that she had. She didn't want to believe it, especially since it seemed to come out of nowhere, but maybe it was a trauma thing, like they had mentioned before.
Michelle had put so much trust into him. He helped her when she had died, he was there when she needed him the most. She didn't want to lose that in the same way she lost Jennifer.
Wally wrapped his arms around her, pulling her in close.
He didn't have an answer for her. He couldn't just bullshit this. This was Michelle's life.
No, Michelle didn't go into explicit details about what she dreamt of. If she had, Wally would've tried to kill him right then and there. What she needed in the moment was Wally and that's what he gave her.
They had each other. Just like in the past. They always had each other.
MICHELLE HAD separated from Wally to just breath.
A lot was happening to everyone and they all just needed sometime to think.
She sat on the roof of the school, the wind blowing through her blonde hair, revealing the dark scar that had been left from the fire extinguisher.
She slowly took her hand, brushing her hair down, and kept it there while she shut her eyes.
She heard the door of the roof open and didn't bother to turn. She only assumed that it was Wally or Charley coming to sit with her.
She kept her eyes shut and he took a seat next to her.
It wasn't Wally. It wasn't Charley.
"I know things are pretty intense right now with Dawn crossing over, but there's something good in that, isn't there?" Hunter questioned, "This could be huge for us."
Michelle didn't say anything. She continued to hold her eyes shut, squeezing them even tighter in hopes that he wasn't really sitting next to her. Hoping that her nightmare was truly just a nightmare and something she had repressed until dreaming about it.
"Michelle?" Hunter called out, "Are you okay?"
He rested her hand on her shoulder and she deeply sighed, shrugging his hand off her shoulder and stood to her feet.
"I need to find Wally." She muttered.
Hunter furrowed his brows and quickly stood up, calling out to her once more.
"Did I do something wrong? Why are you so off?"
Michelle's eyes narrowed as she looked at Hunter, "Something wrong? Did you do something wrong?" She repeated, her voice laced with bitterness.
Hunter's face paled as he realized the gravity of her words. He swallowed hard, his voice barely a whisper, "I... I don't know what you mean."
"You hit me." She spoke, "You hit me with the fire extinguisher, didn't you?"
"What are you talking about?" He scoffed, "From the day you died? Michelle... I would never—"
"I trusted you. Why?" She asked, "Why did you hit me with it?"
Hunter shook his head, taking a step forward, but she only took a step back.
"Michelle, I don't know what... I don't know where you've got idea from. I never hurt you. I never... I would never."
"I don't believe you."
She turned once more, leaving the boy on the roof. He wasn't going to admit, defend, or continue lie to her any longer. She wasn't going to get the truth out of him and she knew that.
She left him alone on the roof. She wanted more than anything for him to tell her the truth, but instead, she walked away.
LATER ON, Charley, Michelle, and Wally found themselves looking for clues for anything that would help them crossover. Something had been off about Janet's crossover versus Dawn's and they wanted to get to the bottom of it.
For now, Michelle would keep what happened between her and Hunter a secret. She didn't need or want Wally to do anything he'd regret. They would figure out this crossing over shit and it would be over for everyone.
"Are you finding anything?" Charley asked.
"Dude, this thing was old when I went here." Wally spoke from the computer.
"Dawn found something yesterday when she looked into her past, and Janet must have done the same. So— so maybe if we look into their pasts too, we can find something that could explain all of this." Charley explained, "What year are you on?"
"Uh, 1959." Wally answered, "I'm trying to move backwards, but I am not seeing Janet's name anywhere. She died in 1960, right?"
"Yeah."
Michelle had been off in the corner, shuffling through different files, but finding nothing that belonged to Janet or Dawn.
"This all seems like a dead end." Michelle sighed, pushing the box away.
"There's nothing of much interest in Dawn's student file either." Charley sighed, "You know, I— I know we weren't super close, but I feel kind of awful that we didn't get to say goodbye to her."
Michelle stood from her spot and gave Charley a small smile.
"I don't want it to happen that way for me." Wally said, "I didn't get a goodbye last time. I do not want to just disappear."
Michelle held her soft smile, "We're not. You're not. We're going to figure this out."
She pulled a chair closer towards Wally and the computer, taking the mouse from his hands.
She furrowed her brows and pointed towards the screen, "Look." She began to read, "Spilt River High School has been chosen for a national pilot program to protect students and teachers from the threat of nuclear strike."
"What?" Charley questioned, taking a seat on top of the table.
"Uh, A fallout shelter will be built below the east wing of the school," Wally read, "the same location where fire destroyed the former chemistry lab on January 14th, 1958."
"1958 is the year Mr. Martin died." Michelle said, "Does it mention that?"
Wally scrolled for a moment before reading from the screen once more, "Authorities determined the fire was accidental. Two people were killed in the fire that overtook the lab during a routine chemistry lesson. Beloved chemistry teacher, Mr. Everett Martin, was one of the deceased—"
"Wait, two people?" Charley questioned, "He said he was the only casualty."
"One student was also killed in the fire... um, sophomore—" Wally paused.
"What's wrong?" Charley asked.
Wally pointed towards the screen and Janet's name read across the screen.
"Why did they both lie to us?" Wally asked.
THE TRIO decided to go down into the fallout shelter to find out anything else about what they had discovered.
"Dude, this place looks like it hasn't been touched in years." Wally sighed.
"I can relate." Charley sighed.
"I don't think that joke was necessary." Michelle muttered.
"It wasn't a joke."
The trio separated and began searching around the shelter for clues or information that could lead to them crossing over sooner.
"The article said that this was built where the old science wing was after the fire." Charley said.
Michelle approached a shelf and furrowed her brows, "This stuff has been moved. Look, the box has been moved."
Charley took his finger and brushed it against the dust that it had collected from the box being pushed back slightly.
Wally grabbed the box from the shelf and opened it up and inside was nothing of use, other than a leather portfolio, but behind the box were folders.
Charley grabbed as many as he could and handed some of them off to Michelle to look over.
"What— what are these?" Charley questioned.
In Wally hands, were their obituaries, and in Charley and Michelle hands were notes that Mr. Martin had taken of each of them during their time with him.
Michelle opened the first folder on top of her pile and it was Hunter's. From the notes, she read that he was upset from dying in the matter that he had, but he also had great remorse from something that was scribbled out, unreadable.
She sheet of paper had fallen out of folder and she bent down to pick it up. She unfolded the piece of paper and furrowed her brows as she read the note.
She flipped it over and Mr. Martin handwriting was scribbled on the back, "Subject had written the note for a young girl, living. Subject allegedly was able to have living subject "come and see him" unable to clarify if this is true." It read.
Michelle had seen the note. She had read the note before. It was the same note that she had believed was written by Wally. The note that had told her to meet them by the girls locker room.
"Michelle?" Wally called, "Is that Janet's folder?"
She quickly shut it and shook her head. She put Hunter's folder on the bottom of the pile and continued shuffling through the pile until she found something.
But Wally was able to find his own folder before pulling out a piece of paper.
"This was the play that killed me." Wally said, "Mr. Martin's been documenting us, and he's been documenting our deaths."
"Look, this another article about the fire." Charley said, "Grieving parents of Spilt River sophomore, Janet Hamilton, demand that administration be held accountable for daughter's death after surviving students say fire was started at the hands of her late educator, Mr. Everett Martin." He read, "This says that Mr. Martin caused the fire, be he told us it was a student's fault."
"None of these include Janet." Michelle said, "He never wrote about her."
"We have to confront him." Wally said, "He owes us an explanation."
Soon, the door of the fallout shelter opened the the trio turned to find Rhonda making her way inside.
"What are you guys doing in here?" She asked, "I told you to let this go."
"You— you knew about this?" Charley asked, "You knew that he was treating us like test subjects and never really helping us. You— you knew."
"Look, when Maddie got here and there was all that stuff with her friends on the outside, I— I just had this feeling." She explained, "So I started following him."
She stepped towards the side and pulled against the barrel. Wally helped the girl and she opened lid and inside were the objects they had with them when they had died.
"I'm gonna throw up." Wally exhaled deeply.
"Michelle?" Rhonda called, pulling a piece of paper from the barrel, "Did you have anything from when you died?"
"No." She shook her head, "Just my backpack."
Rhonda didn't say anything and handed the note towards Michelle.
"I never read it, but apparently it was with you when you died."
She slowly grabbed the note from her hands and unfolded it. It was almost ineligible from how old and ratted the paper had been, but she instantly recognized that it was Jennifer's handwriting.
On October 31, 1983, I, Jennifer Daniels, killed my best friend Michelle Richards in the girls locker room of Spilt River High, two days before her birthday. I hit her with the fire extinguisher and wrapped my hands around her neck until I felt nothing. She wasn't breathing, I left her for dead.
Michelle had everything I desired - the love and affection of Wally, the happiness that seemed to radiate from her being. I couldn't bear to see her with him, knowing that it should have been me in her place.
Hunter promised me that I would be happier now that she was dead. I would have Wally's undivided attention, I would be the one to bring him joy.
He told me he loved her and if I brought her to him, it would be easier for the both of us. I gave him Michelle and in return, I now have Wally.
The trio watched as Michelle read the note. Her eyes quickly burning with tears as she read further and further down the list.
She soon balled the note up with her one hand in anger and held the back of neck with the other.
They had never seen her in distress like this. She was panicking and crying.
"Michelle?" Wally called.
"She confessed." She cried.
"What?"
"She confessed and Mr. Martin kept her note."
Wally reached out slowly grabbing the note from her hands as he began to read the note for himself. Rhonda and Charley gathering around him.
"What the hell?" Wally muttered.
Everyone distresses had been quickly diverted when they heard the door of the fallout shelter lock.
Wally made his way towards the door, pulling on it as hard as he could with the help of Charley, but it wasn't budging.
They tried resetting it and nothing work. Checking the hatch didn't work. They had been locked in the fallout shelter with seemingly nowhere out.
Charley began banging on the door and for what felt like hours... they heard Maddie's voice from the outside of the door.
"I'm here." Her voiced muttered from their side.
She began pulling on the door, but it wasn't budging.
"I'm trying to open the door!" She shouted.
"Maddie, the back hatch is stuck too." Wally shouted, "We can't move it!"
"Maddie, be careful!" Rhonda called.
Michelle, with tears still rolling down her face, pushed through them and placed her hands on the door, "Maddie?" She called, "You can't trust them, okay? Neither them."
"Trust who?"
The group didn't hear anything from Maddie, like she had moved away from the door. Nothing but silence fell upon them.
This wasn't the paradise that Michelle or any them of had expected. This wasn't the life they wanted for themselves, but Mr. Martin had always promised to help them find the paradise that they would be looking for.
This was hell on Earth and he had gotten away with it. He hid secrets from every single one of them.
They trusted him like a father figure and with seconds of discovering the truth, he had killed every single one of them.
