Chapter 2

Cameron:

I was supposed to be at Harvard at their most prestigious computer science program. I was supposed to be paving the way to making my own programs and apps like Mark Zuckerberg. Only difference was he dropped out and made Facebook. I didn't want to do that. I wanted my degree, and my masters. Every year of my high school career I have had a 4.0 gpa on each of my report cards. I was the captain of the robotics club, co-captain of the soccer team, secretary of treasury in the accounting club, the rotary club, an internship at my dad's company, I worked out at the gym to keep my body healthy, and I maintained a social life. Instead I'm at a third ranking university because Harvard thought it was a good idea to revoke my acceptance due to having 'unforeseen circumstances.' In other words: my senior year was less than spectacular. Dad donated plenty of money to Eastern University since it's his alma mater. I joined the university's soccer team and pledged Epsilon on his behalf since it was his frat back in the day. I had to continue the legacy.

I shook my head, peeking at her as she stared out the window. Her profile was tense, I noticed her jaw clenched trying not to look my way. Her shoulders dropped and she blinked twice. She didn't have to be here. I opened my mouth to say something, and might yell at her. I sighed instead. Same old Caroline Peterson. Stubborn, bossy, insecure. She hasn't changed since we graduated. Besides her hair. Last time I saw her, it was wavy. Now it's curly. For a beautiful girl, she was so uptight. She's jealous, that I had a photographic memory and she didn't.

"This is nice, right?" Michelle asked, she was sitting behind Daniel, Caroline behind my seat.

I heard Caroline scoff and say, "lovely." I looked up as they both exchanged looks from the rearview mirror. Her brown eyes could burn a village as to how she looked with a cold stare, then she looked away with an eye roll. Classic Caroline. Michelle nudged her head to the side with a pointed stare at Caroline. She sighed and leaned half her body in the middle of the gearshift. "So Cameron, how was your summer? Another internship at your dad's office?" I side eyed her snide tone as she took a sip from her cup and batted her long lashes.

"For your information, yes. Like every summer," I muttered.

"Isn't that nice," she stated in a high pitched voice that pissed me off. I inhaled to calm myself down. The sound of her voice sent me on edge. "Working with your daddy and bonding." She patted my shoulder with her fakeness.

"It was, thank you for asking," I replied, mimicking the same tone. She sat back, seeing her shake her head and look out the window. Believe me, this was the last place I wanted to be around her. The rest of the car ride went silent, except for Caroline's loud sigh. Daniel turned on the radio to fill the silent void.

We arrived at the Epsilon frat house. Thank God, I jumped out before anyone else, before Daniel could turn off the ignition. I slammed the door shut, rapidly walking to the house, most of the guys in front of the door were holding beer bottles and greeted me. "What's up Cam?" One of them said, fist bumping me. I breathed, edging my way into the crowd for a drink. The smell of marijuana smoke and alcohol lingered in the air. I needed a drink if I had to be around her tonight. Maybe five. "Cam, chill," Daniel came behind me with a hard pat on my shoulders.

I grabbed one of the cups from the stands and drank it all in one sip. I took another one and walked off. The keg was tapped, others were in line waiting for their drink. Michelle came over next to Daniel, wrapping her arm around his waist and nuzzled his neck.

Caroline right behind her, standing and looking around the party. "Ooh, a keg!" She observed, and walked forward to the kitchen. I knew she wasn't a drinker, she just wanted to get away from me. The feeling was mutual.

"I'm going to my room!" I told him.

"Don't be a grump, Cam! It's a party!" Dan said, shaking his head. "A lot of girls are here!"
I knocked back another one, throwing it over my shoulder. Coding sounded more fun than being here with her. Anything, really. Two girls walked past us and waved with a wink and a smile. I nodded my head. Maybe like them. This whole weekend, I wanted to look for other schools, so I begged my dad for a transfer. He offered for me to try for a semester. "I thought the boys got more bottles!"

"They did! It's in the kitchen! What's up with you and Caroline?!" He asked out of the blue.

"Where do I start?!" I shook my head, "she's a gnat that won't go away!" I watched as she pumped the keg, talking to Michelle, she filled the frothy beverage to the top and took a sip. I could see her trying not to look my way. Her eyes glanced to the side and drank again. I snorted, telling Daniel that I was going to the other side of the room. The music thumps made my head throb. I plopped down, sipped again and rested my head on the back of the head rest. The stench of beer came from the fabric. It stunk but I'm getting used to it. The music wasn't so loud here, I closed my eyes to ease my head.

"Cameron, Cameron, Cameron Davis," a girl announced as she sat next to me on the small red couch. She leaned on her knees with her elbows, her brown eyes hooded before she batted her eyelashes. Her black hair pulled in a high ponytail, she bumped her shoulder with mine hard. Her skin was flawless, full of freckles. The hem of her skirt rose up, she tugged it down to adjust.

"Yes, yes, yes," I answered back, moving into a relaxed position, flexing my muscles behind my head. Even though it was dark, the area was semi light. I could see the glow on her face, the glaze in her eyes. She's probably three drinks in. Her breath smelled of tequila.

"What brings you to a place like this?" Her words were slurring, she swayed but kept eye contact.

"Well, it's a party. Of course I'm here." And my dad forced me to pledge.

"I'm glad you came. I'm glad I came." She pointed to her chest. "I thought you would be held up in your rooms doing equations." She pouted her full pink lips.

"Why would I do that?"

"Because you're a nerd! A sexy nerd! I do nerds!" She laughed in a drunken stupor, the drink in her hand splashed on her naked leg and hand. I've gotten called a nerd before, since I was a kid. I didn't care, it didn't make me cry. I embraced it, I'm better than them.
"I'm sure you do."

"So will you do me?"

"I don't even know your name."

"I'm Kat. Kat Sanford. I'm pledging Delta. Remember that." She pointed to her side of her head.

"You're drunk. I'm all about consent."

"I consent! We're alone! I watched that nerd movie from the 80s. I know what you can do." She smirked, placing her chin on my shoulder. I sucked in a breath, my neck felt flushed. I had to get out of here. More people came to join us, the pledges sat around us on the spare chairs. Good, a distraction. She huffed, throwing her back on the chair with a frown.

"Were we interrupting?" One of my brothers, Evan, asked.

"Yes." She pouted again.

"Oh well Kat." He shrugged. She did a hmph and took his drink out of his hand, drinking the rest. Whatever. A red head sat on his lap and planted a kiss on his lips. She was holding a bottle of vodka, screwing it open for a sip. More people gathered around, wait, I wanted to be alone. I'm going back to my room.

"Let's play, never have I ever." A brunette suggested, sitting down on one of my pledge brothers' lap. She nuzzled into his neck, sloshing the liquid in her cup it splashed on her arm. She licked it up quickly before she planted a hard kiss to his mouth. Michelle, Daniel, and Caroline came over.

"There's no more seats?" She asked, pointing out the other chairs.

"You can sit right there, next to Cam." The brunette said. Damn it. There was a space between me and Kat.

"Uh, you know what, it seems crowded here," she stammered, gesturing her hand in a circle of the group.

"Chicken to play a drinking game, Caroline?" I asked, raising my eyebrows. Her mouth was set in a straight line when she set her eyes on me.

"On the contrary, I don't want to sit next to you." She walked over, asking Kat to scoot over, she obliged and positioned herself on the edge of the cushion while Kat squeezed her body into my ribs and giggled. I chuckled. I wasn't in the mood for a drinking game. Quarters' was my favorite due to the probability of how many quarter shots I could get each round. Never Have I Ever, didn't care for it.

"Ok, let's get started. Never have I ever-" the brunette looked up in thought, sticking out her lips like a duck. "Had sex in my parents bedroom."

"What?" Michelle asked in disgust.

"It was the first thing that popped up." She looked around for anyone to drink, no one did. "Ok, next."

"I'll go," Evan suggested and cleared her throat, "never have I ever gotten drunk after two drinks."

A girl and two boys took a sip from their cups. Including Michelle. Some in the group laughed. Daniel kissed her cheek when she blushed hiding behind her cup. "Ok, enough, my turn. Never have I ever binged watched a show." Basically everyone drank, even me. Most nights I would watch House, Md and Community over and over. "Cam, your turn,"Daniel said.

"Um, ok. Never have I ever missed a class." I shrugged. Everyone gave me a pointed look like I grew my ears out.

I heard a snort, stifling laugh, I looked to the side of Caroline holding her giggles behind her palm. I scowled, watching her shoulders shake from the stifling chuckles. She pretended to clear her throat and said, "I have a tickle in my throat." She drank from her cup, hiding her face.

"My turn!" Kat yelled. Drinking from her cup and said, "never have I ever had sex in public. Haha." She took a sip herself again. I took a sip from my cup, Kat gasped. "You are my soulmate!" She side hugged me. Technically it was a blowjob, but it was at a Target parking lot. "Ok, your turn. What's your name?" She nudged Caroline's arm repeatedly.

"Caroline," she answered, giving an uncomfortable look.

"Are you pledging for Delta too?"

"No."

"Oh, why are you here?"

"I was invited."

"Your turn."

"Um, ok. Never Have I ever uh gotten high." Most of the group drank, I did as well. "Wow, Cam. Impressive."

"Excuse me?" I asked with a frown.

"I mean. I didn't think someone as clean cut would engage in drugs. I thought drugs scramble your brain."

"So does alcohol but we're all drinking, judgy."

"I'm not judging," she frowned.

"Sure, you're not," I rolled my eyes.

"Ok, my turn!" A boy with a buzz cut announced, "never have I ever gone skinny dipping." three of us drank. Including Caroline. My eyes widened, but I scoffed. She probably meant in the bathtub. The game went on in the circle, I drank from my cup four times until it was my turn.

"Never have I ever gotten a bad grade." some drank, I watched Caroline not take a sip. "Really? You're not gonna drink?"

"I never got a bad grade."

"Really? Senior year?" I watched her seethe, flaring her nostrils.

"That was not my fault. It was a slippery slope that you caused."

"Me? Coming from the girl that thought vinegar was hydrogen peroxide."

"Because you refused to listen to me! I was doing it right, followed the instructions and you just had to do everything yourself!" She accused, pointing at me. Wow, here we go again. It was her fault, I still had the grafts on my arm.

"You were doing it wrong!"

"I wasn't!" She held herself back, realizing our scene and she breathed. "You know what, I'm done. I tried." Caroline stood up, throwing the cup to her side, taking her purse.

"What, no." Michelle stood up to her height and shook her head.

"You can stay, I can't do this. Not with him."

"Let her go, she's bringing the mood down." I slumped back, drinking from my cup.

"Yeah," Kat agreed. I'm starting to like her. I placed my arm around her shoulders, she snuggled to my ribs.

"You're bringing the mood down with your know it all attitude," she snarled.

"That's you." I pointed at her with a grin. She groaned and walked away. Michelle followed her with a jog. Daniel right behind them. Good riddance.

"What a bitch," Kat said, shaking her head.

"Yep," I stated. Kat kissed my neck, sniffing my skin, "you smell like soap. Like Dove. Do you use Dove?"

"No," I answered. She laid on my shoulder

"It's nice. Smells like my bathroom at home." I nodded, letting her lay on my shoulder as the game continued.
