Chapter 2 ~ The Eight Potters

"Who's that?" I asked Harry as I turned away from the door, facing him once again.

Harry walked by me, heading for the front door. I followed him, watching as he opened the door. Smiles came upon our faces. "Hagrid!" we exclaimed.

"Hello, Harry! Hello, Max!" Hagrid's booming voice greeted us.

Ron came up from behind him and tackled Harry and I for a hug. Then Hermione came in, giving us a hug as well.

"Yeh two are lookin' fit," Hagrid said.

"Yeah, they're absolutely gorgeous," Moody said, entering the house. "What do you say we get undercover before someone decides to murder both of them?"

They weren't the only ones who were here. Kingsley, Mr. Weasley, Lupin, Tonks, Fred, George, Fleur, and two other people I didn't recognize came inside, too.

"Kingsley, I thought you were looking after the Prime Minister," Harry said.

"You and Maxine are more important," he told us.

A ginger approached us with a warm smile. "Hello, Harry, Max. Bill Weasley."

"Pleasure to meet you," Harry and I said at the same time, smiling and shaking his hand.

"He was never always this handsome," Fred commented.

"Dead ugly," George added.

"I see you two haven't changed a bit," I told them, grinning at them.

"Oh, yeah? Well, you haven't, either, Max Potter," Fred said, pulling me in for a hug, followed by George, and then Fleur.

"Harry, Max," Lupin greeted us with a smile.

"Lupin," we said in unison.

"Well, hello to you, too, Potter and Potter," Tonks teased. "By the way, wait until you hear the news. Remus and I--"

"All right! We'll have time for a cozy catch-up later!" Moody interrupted, walking in the front of what used to be the living room. "We've got to get the hell out of here, and soon! Anyway, Potters, you're both underage, which means you two still got the Trace on you."

"The what?" we asked.

"If one of you sneezes, the Ministry will know who wipes your nose. The point is, we have to use those means of transport the Trace can't detect: Brooms and Thestrals. We go in pairs. That way, if anyone is out there waiting for us, and I reckon there will be, they won't know who or where the real Harry and Max Potter are."

"The real Harry and Max Potter?" I repeated.

Moody grabbed two tiny bottles and waved them in the air. "I believe you two are familiar with this particular brew."

Oh, no. He couldn't be serious. "No," we protested at the same time. "Absolutely not."

"I told you they'd take it well," Hermione said from behind us in a sarcastic tone.

"No, if you think we're going to let everyone risk their lives for me and Max--"

"Never done that before, have we?" Ron spoke up.

"No, this is different, Ron," I told him. "You guys are taking that stuff and becoming us. No. Harry and I are not going to let you guys do that."

"Everyone here is of age, you two. They've all agreed to take the risk."

Someone cleared their throat from behind. "Technically, I've been coerced. Mundungus Fletcher, by the way. Always been a huge admirer of you two."

"Nip it, Mundungus!" Moody snapped, causing him to be quiet. "All right, Granger, as discussed."

Hermione came in between us and pulled a strand of hair from each of us.

We grunted in pain. "Blimey, Hermione," we retorted at the same time, shooting her a glare.

She placed Harry's hair in one bottle and mine in the other.

"All right. The boys will be disguised as Harry and the girls will be disguised as Max. For those of you who haven't taken Polyjuice Potion before, fair warning: It tastes like goblin piss."

"Have a lot of experiences with that, do you, Mad-Eye?" one of the twins asked. When no one said anything, the ginger nodded his head. "Just trying to diffuse the tension."

Harry and I watched as Fred, George, Mundungus, and Ron became Harry, while Fleur and Hermione became me. Suddenly, everyone looked like us.

"Wow! We're identical!" Fred and George exclaimed.

One of the adults dumped a pile of clothes on the floor. They were all something that Harry and I wore most of the time.

"Everyone needs to change clothes," Moody announced. "Even you two, Harry and Max."

We nodded our heads and searched through the pile of clothes for us.

"Right, then. We'll be pairing off. Each Potter will have a protector. Mundungus, stick tight to me. I want to keep an eye on you." Moody gave him a suspicious look. "As for Harry and Max--"

"Yes?" everyone said.

"The real Harry and Max. Where the devil are you two, anyway?"

"Here!" we replied at the same time from opposite sides of the room.

"You two will ride with Hagrid. Harry, you'll get in the sidecar. Max, you'll ride a broom beside them." We nodded, understanding what we were doing. "Let's go. Harry, Max, go upstairs and pack. Hurry up, though. The Polyjuice Potion won't last long."

After Harry and I finished changing clothes, we quickly ran up the stairs and into the bedroom. We took our individual rucksacks and stuffed everything we needed since it looked like we weren't coming back. While Harry was packing fast, I was moving very slow, grabbing my books, clothes, and other things and slowly putting them in my rucksack.

"Come on, Max, we have to go now," Harry announced.

I nodded. "Okay," I said.

He came over to me with his stuff, looking at me with concern. "What's wrong?"

I shook my head in response. "Nothing. Come on. Everyone is waiting for us downstairs." I went over to grab my broom and Hedwig, attempting to sprint out the door, but Harry stopped me.

"What is it, Max?" he asked again.

I huffed a sigh, looking up at him. "Why are we agreeing to this? This is a mad plan and if anyone gets killed tonight--"

"Max, don't talk like that," Harry said. "No one is going to get killed tonight, okay? We'll all be together after it's all over."

I nodded. "I hope so."

Harry nodded his head and dropped his stuff down pulling me into a tight hug. "We'll be okay," he whispered. "I promise."

Once he pulled away, we grabbed our things and headed down the stairs. I set Hedwig off into the night so that she could meet us once we were safe. I placed my rucksack with Harry. I mounted my broom, grabbing my wand from my back pocket. I touched my neck to make sure the necklace with my three charms were still there. Once I felt the metal touch my finger, I placed my hand back on my broom.

"Head for the Burrows! We'll rendezvous there!" Moody announced to everyone. "On the count of three!"

"Hold tight, Harry!" Hagrid warned him, starting the engine.

"One..."

I got to everyone's level on my broom, looking down at Harry. He had a determined look on this face.

"...two..."

I was ready to get this over with. I was ready to be strong. I was ready to fight.

"...three!"

Everyone was off into the sky. I trailed behind Harry and Hagrid, making sure I knew where I was going. I finally caught up with them and stayed beside them. Harry and I looked at each other, nodding our heads, signaling that we were ready for whatever was about to happen.

Suddenly, Death Eaters were everywhere.

"Is that them?!"

"Where are the real Potters?!"

Spells were flying everywhere. While everyone else was shooting spells at the Death Eaters, the three of us sped past them, not looking back.

"Hagrid, we have to help the others!" Harry shouted.

"I can' do that, Harry! Mad-Eye's orders!" Hagrid shouted back.

All of a sudden, Hagrid pressed a button that made him and Harry zoom off at the speed of light, leaving me behind and alone in the sky.

"Harry!" I yelled.

Determined to catch back up with them again, I leaned forward on my Firebolt, going faster than ever. I saw the motorcycle go down and I also noticed the three Death Eaters that were behind me. Hagrid's motorcycle went on the road, which made me really nervous. I sped down towards them, turning around and shooting spells at the Death Eaters behind me.

"Stupefy!" I kept on yelling, pointing my wand at each Death Eater that I spotted.

But when I turned back around to see where I was going, I ran into the side of a truck, causing me to fall off my broom. Luckily, I still had one hand on the broom, so I didn't completely fall off. I pushed off of every car or truck that went by, hoping that it would help me get on my broom again. I entered a tunnel, pushing off a truck one more time and finally getting back on the broom. A Death Eater from behind me fired a spell at me, going past me and hitting Hagrid instead.

"Hagrid!" I rushed over to him and Harry to see if Harry needed any help. But Harry already left the tunnel and went back up in the sky, so I followed him.

I then saw a flash of white coming our way. When I realized it had wings, I instantly knew it was Hedwig. She went behind us and attacked the Death Eater. But when he was about to shoot the Killing Curse at us, Hedwig blocked the green light from hitting us, ending her life.

"No!" Harry and I screamed at the same time, watching as her lifeless body fell to the ground.

As we descended a bit lower to a telephone wire, a shot of pain went to our foreheads. We continued to scream as a voice whispered our names.

"Harry...Maxine...Harry...Maxine..."

"Harry, on your left!" I shouted.

We raised our wands and the spells collided like before. We struggled to break free, but our spells worked and we sped off once again. I heard the faint cry of Voldemort as we fled. Harry was a little bit in front of me, so I hurried to catch up with him.

I suddenly felt like I had just flown through a barrier or some kind of enchantment, which was when I lost control of my broom and where I was going. I fell off my broom, rolling and tumbling into the muddy water with a field surrounding me. I cried in pain that was coming from my right ankle. I tried moving it, but it was no use. It was hurting like crazy.

"Harry?" I called out, looking around to see if he was anywhere in sight, but he wasn't.

I remained in the muddy water for about five minutes. When I finally realized that I had no choice but to get to the Burrow by myself, I pushed off with my hands and stood up from the water, putting pressure on my right ankle, which was a bad idea, but I had to get up somehow. I limped all the way to the Burrow, feeling a lump in my throat and tears from the pain as I continued walking. I was shivering from how cold and wet I was, wanting to stop moving. I finally reached the Burrow, feeling somewhat relieved.

"There she is!" Mr. Weasley shouted from the house.

"Oh, thank Merlin!" Mrs. Weasley huffed a sigh of relief.

"Max!" Harry yelled my name, running over to me and pulling me in his arms. "You're okay. I thought I lost you back there. Are you alright?" I shook my head, unable to talk from the tears. "What is it?"

"My ankle," I managed to choke out. "I think it's broken."

He nodded his head, taking my arm and putting it around his shoulder. "Okay, let's get you inside."

Ron then rushed over and grabbed my other arm, doing the same thing Harry did. They helped me get inside the house and onto a chair, letting me rest my ankle. I looked over at one of the twins on the couch, who had blood gushing out from the side of his head.

"What happened?" I asked Harry.

"George lost an ear," he told me. "Moody's dead. Mundungus fled after he saw Voldemort."

"Can I see your ankle, Max?" Hermione asked carefully.

I nodded. "Just be careful. It hurts a lot."

"Okay." She gently touched it with her fingers, trying not to hurt me. "Max, it's broken."

"I kind of figured that out on my own," I retorted.

"We have to put it back in place," Harry said.

"You mean, with a spell?" I asked.

"No, with bandages, Max," he replied in a sarcastic tone, rolling his eyes at me. "Yes, with a spell."

"Okay, first off, don't you dare use that tone with me ever again. Second, do you not know how much it's going to hurt if you use a spell to fix it?"

"Yes, I do know, actually. Luna used a spell last year to fix my broken nose," he explained.

"You kids just take Max upstairs and help her while I deal with George here," Mrs. Weasley said.

Harry and Ron helped me up to Ron's room with Hermione and Ginny behind us. They placed me down on the bed, taking off my shoes and examining my ankle.

"I'd shut the door if I were you, Ginny," Harry said.

As Ginny closed the door, my stomach was beginning to get knots.

"Okay, ready, Max?" Ron asked me. I nodded. He turned to Hermione. "You know the spell?"

She nodded her head, pointing her wand at my ankle. As she did the wand movements, I screamed bloody murder once the bone moved back into place.

"FUCK!" I shouted as loud as I could, panting and crying. "That hurt!" Harry then gave me a funny look. "What is it, Harry?"

"Your necklace. It's gone," he pointed out.

I gasped, placing my hand to my neck. He was right. My necklace was gone. "It must've fallen off when I landed in the water. That necklace meant a lot to me."

"I'm sorry, Max," my brother said in a sympathetic tone. "Maybe we can go look for it tomorrow in the morning. It's late and we're all tired, I'm sure."

I sighed. "Yeah. Can I just have my stuff?"

"I'll go get your stuff," Ginny spoke up, leaving the room.

Hermione took the charm down before she left the room with Ron, leaving me and Harry by ourselves.

"I knew the plan was a bad idea," I said. "Hedwig's dead, too."

"I loved that owl," Harry added.

"Me, too," I said in agreement.

Ginny came back with all our stuff and gave our rucksacks to us. She left the room once again, shutting the door behind her like before. I grabbed a baggy shirt, some of my underwear and sweatpants, and walked out of the bedroom and into the bathroom. I changed out of my wet clothes and hung them on the shower curtain to dry. I went back to Ron's bedroom and brushed my hair, struggling to get the tangles out.

"Let me do it," Harry offered, taking the brush out of my hand, beginning to gently brush my hair.

"I can brush my own hair, thank you very much," I retorted.

"I'm just trying to help," he protested in a soft voice.

I huffed a sigh. "I know you are, I'm sorry. Thanks, bro."

"Anything for you, sis," he said back.

When he finished brushing my hair, he suggested that we go to bed. I agreed and went to turn the light off. I got back in bed with Harry, throwing our stuff on the floor, then looking up at the ceiling, feeling Harry staring at me.

"Stop staring at me. I already have enough dead people staring at me from above. I don't need my own brother staring at me from the other side of the bed."

I wasn't sure why I said that, but I knew it was a harsh thing to say. Yes, a lot of dead people were staring down at me, but they were dead because of me and Harry. We were the ones at blame for everyone that had died for us. Our parents, Cedric, Sirius, Dumbledore, Hedwig, and Moody. It was our fault they weren't here with us anymore.

"I shouldn't have said that," I whispered.

"It's okay, Max," my twin whispered from my right. Harry then began to look up at the ceiling like I was. "We'll find that necklace tomorrow. I know how much it means to you."

I shook my head. "Don't worry about it. It's gone now. I don't want to waste my time trying to find it." I turned to the side, looking at the door. "Goodnight, Harry."

"Goodnight, Max," he said back.

It didn't take long for Harry to fall asleep beside me. It took me a while to fall asleep, but I finally did, trying to have pleasant dreams.
