Chapter 14 ~ Hellos and Goodbyes
Malfoy Manor looked exactly like it did the last time I was here. It was dark and gloomy like always. There was no sign of light anywhere on the property. When we reached the gate, we watched as Bellatrix Lestrange walked over to the other side of the gate and looked at us. Scabior moved Harry's hair, revealing his scar. Then, he did the same with me. Bellatrix widened her eyes a little bit.
"I'll get Draco," she said, letting us inside. My heart skipped a beat when she mentioned his name.
Scabior and the other Snatchers led us inside the mansion and took us to the drawing room. It was a room that I had been in a few times, but nothing important happened here. I passed Draco a few times when I started staying here, but that was back when we wouldn't talk to each other.
Scabior threw Harry and I to the ground. Two Snatchers had Ron and Hermione while another Snatcher had Hermione's bag. Bellatrix left the room to go get Draco and his parents. I thought my heart was about to beat out of my chest. I was excited and nervous to see him at the same time. I wanted to smile when I saw his blond hair from a distance. I gasped when he entered the room and my heart was beating rapidly when our eyes met.
"Well?" Bellatrix asked Draco, raising her eyebrows and flashing Draco with her evil grin, which was making him uncomfortable.
The realization in his eyes came as he stared at me. He shook his head, snapping out of our gaze. "I...I can't be sure," he replied quickly.
"Listen, Draco," Lucius began to say in a whisper. "If we're the ones to hand the Potter twins over to the Dark Lord, then all would be forgiven. Everything will be like they were before."
"Now let's not forget who actually caught them, Mr. Malfoy," Scabior retorted from behind him.
"You dare to talk to me like that in my own house?!" Lucius shouted, making us flinch a little.
Narcissa hissed at him and pulled him beside her.
"Don't be shy, sweetie. Come over," Bellatrix said, taking his hand and letting him get down on his knees in front of us. "Now, if these two aren't who we think they are, Draco, and we call him, he'll kill us all. We need to be absolutely sure."
Draco stared at me for a brief moment. "What's wrong with their faces?"
"Yes, what is wrong with their faces?" Bellatrix repeated.
"They came to us like that," Scabior answered. "Something they picked up in the forest, I reckon."
"Or they ran into a Stinging Jinx," Bellatrix whispered. "Was it you, dearie?" she asked Hermione, pointing at her. "Give me her wand. We'll see what her last spell was." Bellatrix checked her wand, realizing she was right, then began to laugh, but then she let out a gasp when she saw the sword. "Where did you get that?" she asked the Snatcher.
"It was in her bag when we searched her. Reckon it's mine now," he replied with a smirk.
All of a sudden, Bellatrix began to attack all of the Snatchers. She yelled at them to get out while she had the sword in her hand, storming towards Hermione. "Cissy, put the boys in the cellar! I want to have a conversation with this one, girl-to-girl! Lucius, take the other girl!"
Narcissa handed Harry and Ron to Wormtail, while Bellatrix had Hermione. I, however, was taken by Lucius Malfoy. He took me to the ballroom and threw me on the ground.
"Now let's see who you really are," he said, shooting a spell at my face.
I screamed, covering my face with my hands. I looked up at Lucius as his eyes went wide.
"Potter," he muttered. "I didn't think I'd see you again."
"Don't you dare come near me," I snapped.
"What are you going to do about it?" he asked, coming closer to me. "You can't do anything. You're just a weak, scared, little girl."
"Get off of me!" I shouted before he covered my mouth and muffled my screams.
"You stupid girl. When will you ever realize that I always win?" he questioned, smirking.
"Stupefy!" a voice came from behind Lucius, causing him to fly against the wall, hitting his head.
I looked up and smiled, tears running down my face. "Draco!" I ran up to him and threw my arms around his neck. "You're here...you're okay..."
"Shh, it's okay, Max," he whispered in my ear. "I'm right here, it's okay."
I pulled away so I could see his face. I placed my hands on his face and kissed him fully on the mouth. "I've missed you," I whispered after I pulled away from him.
"I've missed you, too," he whispered back. "I got your letter."
"Did a fox deliver it here?" I asked, smiling and making Draco laugh.
He laughed. "I know that fox, thank you very much. He's my messenger." He paused for a moment, caressing my face. "I wrote you a letter, too." He pulled out an envelope from his pocket and handed it to me. "I had another one written for you, but my father found it and burned it."
I placed the letter in my pocket and looked back up at him. I gazed into his eyes and he gazed into mine. We leaned in and our foreheads touched. I closed my eyes, huffing a sigh. "Let's just run away together," I said. "Let's just run away and grow old together."
Draco chuckled. "I wish we could. If only it was that easy. I'd give up this life any day just to be with you forever."
"Come with me, then," I blurted out.
"What?"
"Come with me and the others. You can get rid of this old life."
"Max, it's not that easy."
All of a sudden, I heard screaming from the other room. "It's Hermione," I said, a chill going down my spine.
Suddenly, Lucius stood up, groaning, then glaring at me. "Draco, let go of her now."
Draco held onto me tightly with one hand, pointing his wand at his father with the other hand. "Don't you dare try to touch her," he scowled.
"Don't be foolish, son. She's not worth it."
"You don't know her like I do."
Lucius grabbed his wand and shot a spell at Draco. "Stupefy!" he shouted, knocking Draco backwards.
"Draco!" I yelled, running to his side. "Are you okay?"
He nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine."
Before I could say anything else, Lucius grabbed me and dragged me back to the drawing room. He held onto me as we stood by the fireplace. Bellatrix was asking Griphook questions while Hermione was on the floor. I spotted Harry and Ron at the top of the stairs, hiding from everyone else.
All of a sudden, Ron ran out from his hiding spot and shouted, "Expelliarmus!"
Lucius shoved me out of the way as he got his wand out, but Harry shot a spell at him and made him fly backwards. Soon, Harry and Ron were dueling with Narcissa and Draco. I didn't even notice that he came into the room.
"Stop!" Bellatrix shouted, holding Hermione with a knife by her neck. "Drop your wands!" she demanded. Harry and Ron reluctantly dropped them. Draco picked them up quickly and stood to the side. "Well, well, well. Look who we have here. It's Harry and Maxine Potter. Now we'll let the Dark Lord deal with you two. Call him, Lucius."
Lucius stood up and gave me one last glare before raising his sleeve, exposing the Dark Mark. Before he could do anything, we looked up to the sound of a creaking noise. Dobby was unscrewing the chandelier that hung above us. I always knew he would come back.
CRASH!
Looked like the Malfoys were going to need another chandelier.
Before it fell to the ground, Ron caught Hermione and went over to the other side of the room with Griphook. I ran over to Harry as he was trying to grab the wands that Draco had in his hands. I struggled to get the wands as well.
"Draco, please, give us the wands!" I shouted.
Draco gave me a sad look and nodded his head.
Harry and I grabbed the wands from him at the same time.
"Let's go," Harry said to me. I nodded my head in agreement as we ran beside Ron and Hermione.
Lucius was about to shoot a spell at me, but I was quicker.
"Stupefy!" I shouted, causing him to fly backwards.
"Stupid elf! You could've killed me!" Bellatrix yelled at Dobby.
"Dobby never meant to kill!" Dobby protested. "Dobby only meant to maim or seriously injure!"
Narcissa was preparing to do a spell, but Dobby disarmed her with the snap of his hand.
"How dare you take a witch's wand! How dare you defy your masters!" Bellatrix screamed.
"Dobby has no master!" the house-elf retorted. "Dobby is a free elf, and Dobby has come to save Harry and Max Potter and their friends!"
We grabbed Dobby's hand and Disapparated from Malfoy Manor.
We landed on a beach once we were gone from Malfoy Manor. I felt the wet sand hit my back as I opened my eyes. I began to pant and looked over to see Harry and the others were here.
"Harry!" I shouted.
"Max!" he shouted back, running over to me, giving me a hug. "You're all right. We're all safe."
"Harry and Max Potter." We heard a faint cry coming from Dobby. We turned around, making me gasp. Harry and I ran over to him as he fell in Harry's arms.
I pulled the knife out of his chest and began to cry. "No. Dobby, hold on. You're going to be okay, we promise," I said to him.
Harry looked up at Hermione. "Hermione, you have something in your bag, right?" he asked.
She gave him a sympathetic look. "Harry, I-I can't..."
"Hermione, please!" I shouted, letting the tears fall from my face. "Help us! Help Dobby!"
"Such a beautiful place..." Dobby began to say. "Such a beautiful place to be with friends. Dobby is happy to be with his friends. Dobby is happy to be with Harry and Max Potter." With that, Dobby took his last breath.
"No! Dobby, come back!" I cried. "Dobby, come back, please!" I started to cry on Harry's shoulder as he was holding Dobby in his arms.
That was when Luna came over to us. "We should close his eyes," she said. "Don't you think?" We nodded our heads and she closed Dobby's eyes. "Now he can be sleeping."
Harry was now crying as he looked down at Dobby. "I want to bury him," he announced. "I want to bury him properly. Without magic."
So we buried Dobby at the top of a hill. Harry dug a hole while Ron and Hermione wrapped up his body. I made a grave for him while they were placing his body in the hole. Once they were done with that, I took the grave and placed it standing up in the sand.
Here lies Dobby, a free elf.
Ron and Hermione left Harry and I at his grave. I began to cry again. Harry wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close to him, crying as well. I cried in his chest and he kissed the top of my head.
"Harry, why does it have to hurt?" I asked him. "Why does losing someone you care about have to hurt so bad?"
"I don't know, Max," he replied. "But it stops hurting after a while. It always stops hurting."
He was right. It always stopped hurting. But it always took forever to stop hurting. It took forever when my parents died, when Cedric died, when Sirius died, then Dumbledore, then Moody, then Hedwig, now Dobby. The pain of everyone that I loved and cared about took forever to go away and there was nothing that I could do about it. I just had to deal with that pain until it went away. It did get easier, but after so many people dying in front of me, I thought death would become easier for me to cope with. But I was wrong, so wrong.
I knew that Harry was going through the same thing as me. But he never showed his true feelings. He had always tried to be the strong one. But now, whenever it was just me and him, he would open up to me, and he knew that it was okay to be sad every now and then.
"I'm sorry, Dobby," I said. "I'm so sorry."
I remembered our time at Malfoy Manor. We ran into each other a lot, always greeting each other with a smile, while the house-elf gave me a nervous smile. I was going to miss that smile.
"Goodbye, Dobby," Harry said. "You will always be remembered by your friends, Harry and Max Potter."
