Chapter 3: Isle of Ember

(y/n)'s POV

I was leaning on the bow of the ship as I was listening to the waves hitting the sides of the ship. It was dark already dark out. Link and Ciela were below deck and they were already asleep. Listening to the seagulls as they flew above us I breathed in the smell of the ocean. Its already been a day since i've been in here. My mother must be wondering where I am. Sighing I turned around only to run into Linebeck.

"What the hell?! Why were you standing there!"

"Shut it, shorty. We're here." he said as we pulled into the harbor for Ember Island. Looking at him i sighed gently.

"Good. Another minute on this ship with your driving, I would have thrown up."

He gave me a glare before I headed below deck to wake up a sleeping Link. Sitting on the edge of the bed he was on, I rubbed his back a little. "Link, honey."

He moved a little as he turned to me. Opening his eyes and blinking a little he sat up. "We're here" i said as he nodded and rubbed his eyes. Hopping off the bed he grabbed his sword and shield. Going to the deck we met Linebeck at the harbor as he was standing next to the ship.

"This must be the Isle of Ember that Grandpa was talking about."

"A sterling example of my helmsmanship! Impressed, Link?"

"You didn't even know where the island was. Who sketched our course on the sea chart? Link did!"

"What?! You piece of fluff, you don't appreciate the finer points in sailing!"

"Enough already, you two can stop your arguing. We have bigger things to do than listen to you two bicker like an old married couple!"

They looked to me before Linebeck turned and crossed his arms. "I'll be here waiting for you, taking care of my ship! Hmph!"

"What? Are you scared?"

"Me? S-scared? I'm never scared, you little fluttering shrimp! You three go ahead, I'll be here breaking my back working on the ship, for your sakes."

Looking up from the map I glared at Linebeck. He saw me and jumped a little. Handing the map to Link as I walked towards linebeck. Backing him onto the deck of his ship, I turned to look at Link. "You go find Astrid, I'll catch up!"

Grabbing Linebeck's hand I dragged him down the stairs and below the deck. Turning to look at him I could see him cower a little. "Ever since you and Ciela met, you've done nothing buy argue with each other. You two better get over yourselves before i tie the both of you to the bow of your own ship!"

Linebeck jumped a little as i yelled. "She's done nothing but make fun of me!"

"So? Acting like a child won't fix anything."

"She started it!"

"Linebeck!"

"Fine! Okay, okay. I'll apologize when they get back."

"Good. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go make sure they don't get hit by any falling rocks." I said and stormed up the stairs. On the way to Astrid's house, I saw Link running back towards the harbor.

"Did you find Astrid?" I asked as the boy nodded. "And what did she say?"

"She was in her basement so we have to open the door to let her out, but to do that we need to find her assistant Kayo." Ciela said. Nodding as i looked at the fairy.

"Did you go to his house?"

"We did! Only he wasn't home. His journal said that he traveled to the East side of the island."

Nodding i started heading to the east side of the isle with them. Looking at the harbor I saw Lineback standing there, he had his arms crossed and was watching us talk. He saw me look at him and he looked down at his shoes. Following the other two we got to the east side of the isle.

"Look, there's a skeleton!" Looking to where Ciela was pointing we walked over.

"Brute force.... Will get you nowhere... "

"ah, a ghost! Get him link!"

Link stepped forward but the ghost yelped. I had already known this was Kayo. "Aahh?! Wait! Give me a warning before you come at me! I must look really bad, but i'm not a bad ghost I swear!"

"To be honest, he doesn't really look like an EVIL ghost" I said.

"My name is Kayo, I used to work for Astrid, the fortune teller."

"Oh just look what's become of you.. poor thing.."

"If you do believe in fate, it's not that bad. I do feel much lighter! Of graver concern though, is what's happening to Astrid! It haunts me."

"We were just with her! She wants us to open the door that locks her in"

"So Miss Astrid is all right? Well then, please open the door for me, I'll tell you the secret... The three torches on this island are the key to understanding. Keep that in mind and you might be able to open the door."

Looking behind the ghost there was a torch behind him. Grabbing the map and making a small dot where it was we started to walk around in search for the others. Finding another at the north end of the isle I marked that on the map. Time to find the other one.

"Oh! There was one in Kayo's house!" Giving the map to Link I let him mark where the torch was at. Getting to Astrid's house we went to the basement to open the door. Once that was done we looked at Astrid.

"Thank you for opening the door. I'm finally free to go outside again! You bested the monsters who guarded me. So you are no ordinary travelers. Now tell me, what brought you to our island?"

"We were looking for the Ghost Ship, we were told that you might be able to see it's location."

"Is that so? The Ghost Ship came to our island a few days ago. That's why I was hidden away, to escape a ruinous reach. Speaking of which, I haven't seen Kayo since."

"Kayo, he uh.... died"

"I see... I sensed it. Just as I foresaw, but... it was my destiny. Well, life has little use for mourning, so Kayo thought... Shall I tell your fortune?"

We nodded and she hummed. "Please, wait for me upstairs. If there are any others with you on your travels, bring them with you. Assemble yourselves, and I will join you after I make preparations." Doing as we were told we went up the stairs. Leaving for the harbor we went to get Linebeck.

He saw us and stood for a moment. We explained that Astrid wanted to see all of us and he complied. As we turned to walk back to her house Linebeck spoke up. "Ciela wait up." he said as she turned. Tilting her head she motioned for him to continue.

"I've been thinking, since you left. I've been rather rude to you since we met and, I'm sorry." he said. Ciela looked at him for a moment and smiled. "I accept your apology. I'm sorry for causing trouble"  he nodded and we were on our way to the fortune tellers house. Link and Ciela ran ahead while I walked with Linebeck.

"Hey..." I said

Glancing at me he hummed gently. "I'm proud of you"

He stopped as he looked at me. "What for? You practically threatened me to apologize!"

Smiling as I looked up at him. "Doesn't mean I was actually going to do it, just as I thought you weren't going to apologize to the fairy. But sine we're probably going to be around each other a lot for a while, we should get along as much as we can." he gave a small smile and nodded.

Getting to the house, we walked inside. "Confound it! You'd think that for someone who sees the future, she'd be on time! Where is Astrid?! Let's get our fortunes told and be done with it!"

Astrid came up the stairs. "Greetings. Now if every one is here... we can begin." Closing her eyes and waving her hands above her crystal ball she started to talk. "Open my eyes... to the future.... A sinister darkness.... The mighty sea.... and the voice of sacred light... I see it! I shall speak.... Listen with your hearts! If you really want to find the Ghost Ship, you must be ready to clash with the very darkness itself. Do you still want to rescue Tetra?" Link nodded.

"The honesty in your eyes is crystal clear. Now make haste to the Temple of Fire on the summit of this island. There you must find the horror of darkness that haunts that place. You will then find what you need to need to open that path that lies before you. You have it within you to alter our doomed course of events. But the light that seeks your help is growing faint. Please hurry."

"Power of darkness... uh... Hey kid! I just remembered that I have to go and... polish the ship's rudder. Later!" with that he booked it back down to the harbor. Trying not to laugh I smiled gently. Leaving Astrid's house we made our way to the summit. The giant door that we passed earlier on our way to find Kayo, didn't have bolts of electricity all over it. Pushing it open we were able to get through and go to the summit.

As we got to the top of the summit the volcano started to erupt. Dodging the rocks we got to the entrance of the temple. Getting to it we had to blow out the candles. While Link blew out one, I blew out the other. Once the door opened we were able to get into the temple.
