Chapter 2: Helping Linebeck!

(2419 words

(y/n)'s POV

Walking to the Northeastern entrance, we were heading to the temple. Stopping when I saw the familiar big tree at the top of the little hill i looked at Link. "Hey, Link?"

Turning to look at me he tilted his head. Looking over to the big tree I pointed at it. "Go roll into that tree." I said and he looked over to it. Gazing back at me he gave me a look as if to ask, why?

"You'll find out when you do it." I said. Nodding he ran off and did as he was told. Ciela looked at me as she crossed her arms. "Why'd you make him do that?"

"There's money in the tree." I said. Link ran back over to us and showed us a Big Green Rupee, those are worth a hundred small green ones. Putting it in his wallet we made our way to the temple. Since I've played this game a couple of times already, the temple was never a new sight to see.

Getting to the temple we stopped as the two of them admired it. "Aha! So this is the Temple of the Ocean King! Legend has it that the temple was built to honor the mighty Ocean King. But the temple has fallen to ruins, and it ruins any who enter! Still, we have to find Linebeck."

Ciela looked at us and smiled. "Ready?" She asked. I nodded gently and Link gave his signature single nod. Walking through the entrance there were 4 broken columns with two on either side of a small walk way that led to the first room of the dungeon. On either side of the high ceiling-ed room, there were staircases. They both led to the same platform that overlooked the entrance to the temple. In front of the first broken column there was a skeleton.

"Whoa.... Look guys! Look's like someone's skeleton... what is it doing here? You don't think... This could be Linebeck?! This is really starting to creep me out." I watched as Ciela hid under my hair as she sat on my shoulder.

Holding her on my hand i looked at her. "Ciela. If this were Linebeck, he wouldn't be decomposed. With the humidity from the ocean, it would take a long time before he turned into a skeleton. Linebeck is still alive."

She nodded as she smiled at me. "That makes me feel better." she said before she started to fly around again. "Let's get going!" following her into the first room of the temple I sighed gently as it was a little colder than outside. Stepping through the room I could already hear Linebeck yelling at us.

"...Hey!"

The other two looked at each other.

"Wait... Did you hear something, Link?"

Putting my hand on Link's head and gently turning his head to see Linebeck across the small hallway Ciela turned and followed. "Hey! You! Over here, Kid! I'm talking to you, you came at the right time! You're lucky you found me. Lucky for me, but even luckier for you! Now help me!"

Ciela spoke up. "Oh, him? That's Linebeck!" He started to jump up and down as he waved his arms. "Hey, are you LISTENING? I said, HELP!"

Ciela flew over to him. "What is he screaming about?! For someone pleading to be saved, he sure is rude!" He stopped his flailing about and put his hands on his hips.

"What'd you say?! oh, it's that chatty fairy from the old man's place." turning away from her and waving his hand in front of her he started talking again. "Yes, I got it! Listen, could you help me out? Just pay attention to what I have to say."

Ciela flew back over to us and we looked at him from across the hall. He certainly was a taller than I thought he'd be. Linebeck was sure to be about 5 feet 11 inches or at least 6 feet tall. "I know you're a couple kids and all, but try to listen up! I'm trapped in here and I don't know what to do! Normally I'd free myself without any problem but I sprained my ankle and I can't move. Will you help?"

Nodding at him he grinned. "I knew you two would've came through for me." Telling him to wait there I stopped Link to keep him from running around the corner. He looked at me as he put his hands on my arm. Ciela looked over while Linebeck grew impatient.

"I'll get the spikes down, you stay in the safe zone. I have more life energy than you do, so I'll take care of Linebeck." He looked at me for a moment before he nodded. Standing up I sighed gently and ran around the corner. turning the corner and getting into another safe zone. There was a large door with a key hole in the middle of it, like in the cave. To my left there was a crystal orb with a swirling smoke. Giving it a good wack the smoke changed from purple to green.

There was a loud noise that sounded like the sharpening of a blade. Going back to where Link and Ciela were, I saw Lineback huffing and puffing in the corner. Crossing my arms as i stood there Ciela flew up to my eye sight. "I really don't think his ankle is bothering him. He ran like a rabbit over here!"

Nodding gently I walked over to Linebeck and leaned over a little to look at him. "Phew, I think I can take a quick breather." ciela had spoken up about him and his ankle and how she thought he need our help. With that Linebeck turned and stood up straight. Towering over me by a few inches. Looking down at me he put his hand on his hip.

"Bah. It's not like you're the one that did the saving!" He looked between Link and I. "Hey, Kids! You're pretty brave for such an odd pair. I mean, not as brave as me, but not too shabby. So, your names are Link and (y/n) huh? Weird names..." Putting his hands on his hips he announced. "The name's Linebeck! I'm a real man of the sea. Impressive, huh?" he asked as he glanced at me and grinned. I could feel him look me up and down.

"It was smooth sailing for me in the beginning. But then I got myself stuck in that trap. This place'll suck the life out of you if you let it! Blasted temple. What are you two doing in a place like this anyway?"

Link moved his arms around as he explained everything to Linebeck. How he had to save Tetra from the Ghost Ship and how we were looking for his help. Dramatically, he threw his arms in the air. "What?! You're looking for the Ghost Ship?!" Pausing he leaned down and grabbed Link by the shoulders before he started to shake him.

"So, you're trying to get your mitts on the treasure!" While I was watching the scene break down, Ciela spoke up. Linebeck stopped shaking Link enough to look at the fairy. "Treasure? What are you even talking about?! Link is trying to save his friend! She was abducted by the Ghost Ship! We came hoping you might know more about it."

Linebeck nodded as he gained a sly smirk. "Oh. Really? Boo Hoo. How sweet, I think I'm gonna cry. Oh, i'm just teasing kid." he said as he started to shake Link again. "If that is what this is about, then I'm on board!" Standing up he let Link go, waving his hand around. "I'm here looking for information about the Ghost Ship too. I was just a step away, but I sprained my ankle. Otherwise, I would have explored this cursed place."

Ciela moved to be face to face with him, only for the pirate to look away. "Liar! I saw you running like a rabbit, as soon as (y/n) lowered the spikes!"

"No. No, you didn't. That was just an illusion. My ankle is still throbbing, the pain is... unbearable! OoooooOoooh....Ooooh....The pain. Anyway, you wanted to know about the Ghost Ship." He picked up link who was still dizzy from the first amount of shaking. "Go on without me, kid." Shaking him again. "Go grab the clue about the Ghost Ship. It has to be in there. We need it to find the ship. Got that?"

"You're faking it. I think you're just scared!" Stopping his shaking as Ciela spoke, Link saw stars. Dropping Link and turning around with his arms crossed. Ciela went to make sure Link was alright as he laid on the floor. "Not a chance! Normally, I'd be leading the charge down there! But i know how much saving his friend means to Link. I'm letting him have the glory of saving his friend. So, anyway. Here, take this with you" he said as he gave Link a key.

Link stood up and held the key but tried his best not to fall over as he was dizzy. Standing closer to Link I let him grab onto my side. He shook his head a little and looked at me. "Feel better?" I asked and he nodded. Leaving Linebeck to stand at the entrance of the room, we went to the door I saw earlier. Opening it up we went into the next room. Running to the next safe zone that was on our map, we hit the switch that was there. Darting for the mirroring side of the room we hit that switch, allowing a door to open. Going into the newly opened door, we found a chest at that had the Southwestern Sea Chart in it. Taking it we went back to Linebeck who was now outside.

Following the scaredy cat of a pirate. We found him outside. "Oh-ho! If it isn't the two children! Slow getting the goods, eh?"

"Slow? How dare you! You were quick enough to run off, injury and all!

"What an insult! I was merely hurrying back to my ship! Any captain worth his salt, puts his ship before his own safety. I tell you!

Not if you don't make it back to your ship.

"Now, what did you find? Ah, a map. Let me at it! Bah, what's this?! Some boring old sea map? Oh, now I see! It is, as we call it in the adventuring business, a treasure map! If we probe it's mysteries we can find the very prize I'm seeking. The Ghost Ship! And by we, I mean me. Farewell, you two kids! I'm off to find adventure!"

With that he took off down the hill. "Did he really just do that? He muscles in on our map and then just runs off with it? What should we do next? Meet him at his ship?"

I nodded as Link looked at me. Running after them I had Link meet up with Linebeck and Oshus at the harbor while I went to buy a shield from Ai's store. Getting the shield I made my way back to the others.

"Well look who's finally gracing us with his presence, it's old man Oshus!"

"The bridge has been fixed, so I thought I'd check up on the youngsters. You're both amazing kids to emerge alive from the temple, Link and (y/n). Both very courageous for being so early in your years."

"You sent me into that treacherous temple too, you old barnacle!"

"Any who enter the temple unprepared will find it a terrifying ordeal... and most would lose heart and flee for their lives after hearing me say it. But evidently there are true heroes among us."

"Preen my feathers a little more, old man! Yep, I'm famous all right!"

"Not you, you fool! You're a wreck! You'd be sunk by now if our young friends hadn't shown up."

Linebeck glared at the man. "I was injured! On a typical day I would blaze through one or temples before breakfast!

"calm yourself, Linebeck. Tell me what you've made of the temple's map."

He stood up straight and crossed his arms. "I've inspected it fully. My trained eye finds that it holds no secrets at all! But wait, old man. What do you know of this map?"

Oshus started to laugh. Raising a brow as I watched the man laugh, it was rather strange to hear it in person. "Has the map's puzzle eluded you, Linebeck? If I may see the map" he held the map in his hands "A standard map would simply show you were to go, would it not? This is no standard map, you'll find that one section is a little flaky when you touch it. I trust you can solve the puzzle, (y/n)!"

Holding the map I looked at the Isle of Ember and scratched at it until the Symbol for the goddess of Power showed up. Handing it back to Oshus as I looked at a surprised Linebeck, who only scrunched his nose up at me.

"That marks the spot of an island born of volcanic strife. The Isle of Embers! A fortune teller named Astrid lives there, and she sees far. I want you both to find her there. You should ask her if she knows anything about the Ghost Ship."

"Isle of Ember, eh? I've always thought there might be something there. So it's as simple as sailing there and finding Astrid? So we're off to the Isle of Ember then!"

"Ciela, I want you to go with these two, I'm sure you'll be essential as their guide. And by seeing the world, you might be able to find your lost memories."

Getting on board of the ship, I leaned on the rail while Linebeck looked at me. Raising a brow he walked over for a moment. "I have a pretty good idea of how old Link is, but how old are you?" he asked as he crossed his arms.

"I'm just over 19 years old."

"Gah! 19? Are you serious?"

I nodded. "What? Thought I was younger? Surprise, Linebeck. Now how old are you?"

"I'm 23 years old."

"Makes sense for you to be so greedy." I said as I walked into the control room with him on my heels.

"Greedy? I'm not greedy! So what I like treasure, that doesn't make me greedy!" With that we blew the horn as we left the harbor.
