Chapter Two// Facing Fear

~I had just fallen asleep after hours of just laying in the small cottage, just as darkness consumed me I was woken up. My eyes snapped open and I stared widely into a set of blue. She looked familiar everyone did actually even though I don't recall ever meeting them.

Then again I couldn't recall anything besides my name and code 53572 (A/N: If anyone gets what that spells in letters high five!) She had her bow around her and tapped a arrow on her leg.

"Come on newbie," she said. I remembered Rapunzel talking about this girl. What was her name? Mia? Melissa? Then it hit me, Merida.

Without questioning I scrambled up and stood straight we were about the same height she was slightly taller although she looked slightly younger than me. Without saying anything she started walking away and out the door.

I followed quickly, everyone was outside most passed out on the ground. I spotted Rapunzel who walked around with blankets covering them up. She didn't notice me or Merida. I didn't exactly pay attention to were the redhead was taking me I was to interested in the sky were pictures appeared above face many familar in a way.

There names appeared as well as there districts. Merida must of noticed me staring because she started explaining, in her thick accent. "Those are the people who died ta day, district four and one, they faught each other."

I watched the names and the District numbers and I noticed something once they all disappeared and left a normal star filled sky. "Why were there only District four names?" I asked my voice squeaking.

Merida looked at me and smirked, "Its nearly impossible ta kill district one members."

I frowned, "Why?"

Merida stopped infront of a large patch of woods, her eyes flickered to mine, "Okay, how can I describe this to ye Queen? District one there the bears okay and district two, three four and five there the fish, District one there stronger, killers actually nobody stands a chance not only are they stronger than the others, they have more weapons and people there expert on raiding. "

With that she pushed into the woods I hurried after her stumbling on roots and fallen branches. "Wait if district one is the bears and the others are fish than what are we?" I wondered.

I heard Merida snort, "We...were the toys for both the fish and the bear," she then turned by a tree marked with a blue ribbon, "were algae, dirt, grass, bugs," she shouted out random small things.

"Rapunzel told me were threats because were immune to the sting thing," I pointed.

She shrugged, "Not a danger threat, a waste of time one, if were immune than that means we have one less thing to kill us off, without the sting effecting us that the other districts have to kill pretty much all of us themsleves instead of having something like the stingers to help rid of us."

I think that made since I mean I was still confused. Before I could ask anymore questions we came upone a wall to the maze on it names were carved deeply into it names each with tallys by them some crossed out.

I stepped forward my eyes reading the list that start with Jack, and ended with Hiro. "Theses are all the people who came here in order even though alot are not here anymore, the marks beside are the months each person has been here for."

She pulled out a knife tossing it to me. I caught if fumbling with it for a second. Merida watched me taking a seat on a rock. Slowly with a shaky hand I began to carve my name. Suddenly the world fade.

-I sat nervously in my seat my eyes glancing around at the people around me. The were all like me. My finger tapped against the desk, the projected computer apeared infront of me and I touched away touching the air moving the weightless pixels around.

A man stood in front of the class. I knew this man infact he was the reason I was here. He was my assignment. My eyes stayed glued to my screen as I tapped the desk hitting the letters projected on it. Calmly with my gloved hands I typed my name and pressed enter.

"Remember the test your about to take will determine were you'll be placed, whether you are a controller of the game or a player," he said, I took a deep breath I must pace this test, "You may begin."-

"Queen," Merida shouted. I blinked coming back into reality, "Ye zoned put."

"Sorry," I mumbled, "why do you call me that."

"It just what ye remind me of, a queen," she shrugged.

I lowered the knife and stepped back brushing my fingers across my name. Dropping my hand I gripped the knife before turning and holding it out to Merida. She looked at me smirking for a moment she then stepped forward taking my fingers and wrapping it around the handle.

"Keep it yer gonna need it," she tells me.

My lips parted and I began to ask for what but I was cut off by the loud whistling sound around us. The sound was followed by loud flapping. My eyes darted above us andi watched millions of colorful bird looking things.

They were various colors like humming birds. There eyes were red and tbe tips of there colorful wings were wat appeared to be needles. The moonlight shined down apone the. As they landed on the tree branches.

I opened my mouth to say something but Meridas hand slapped over my mouth. I felt her hair brush my cheek as she whispered quietly inmy ear, "No matter what don't scream do make a sound, on the count of three were gonna run back the way we came okay."

"Wh-" I started to ask questions my voice muffled by her palm.

"Shhh," she says softly.

Her hand fell from my mouth and I watched as she stepped slightly in front of me. She reached in her pocket slowly pulling out a bag inside were small balls no bigger than marbles. Taking a handful she started to counting.

"1," she shoved the bag back in her pocket, "2," she let the balls roll in her hand throwing them up in the air. They started poping releasing smoke of color.

She grabbed my wrist and began to run pulling me hard t b e way we had came. I stumbled to keep up. My heart was pounding and the birds flew pasted up there wings slicing my arm. I held back a cry.

We broke through the trees and into the opened. The knee high grass was wet muddy. My feet began to sink slowing me down causing Merida to slow as well. I gripped the knife she gave me tight. She tugged me along I could see her internal debate in her eyes whether to leg me go.

I thought she just might but she didn't, not even when I fell landing in the mud. Merida stopped trying to help me to my feet. Just then her cheek was slit by a bird. As the flew around us Merida dropped to the ground beside me.

We both held our heads, listening to the loud whistling that sound as if is was repeating a million times per second. I whimpered as I was cut. I wasn't sure why I did it but I grabbed Meridas hand and squeezed it.

I moved my lips repeating over and over, "I got you Anna, were gonna get through this."

For what seemed like hours pasted but really it was only seconds. Everything stopped, me and Merida layed there for a moment just breathing. Shakily I pulled my hand from her. Still gripping the knife I sat up looking to see surprisingly that the birds were gone.

Merida began to laugh, "Congratulations Queen, survived yer first Mockingjay attack."

She stood up pulling me to my feet, "MockingJays?" I wondered.

"There posious birds that uses there needle winds to injected it, and the it is what we call the Sting," She explained, "And yer definitely immuned because ye would have already started lost yer mind by now."

Taking a breath she started to walk again as if nothing happened her cheek dripping with blood.I had millions of questions about the birds but instead I asked, "Three?"

"Huh?" She asked.

"You skipped three why?"

She smirked looking at me, "There isn't time for a three," she started to walk, "Three makes ye panic, because by three ye already thought everything through and had enough time to fear it, and here in The Maze Games ye can't risk letting Fear hold ye back."

"Why?" I asked,

"Cause ye have a better chance of doing something right and making it in the games when ye spend less time buildin fear and more facin fear," with that I remained quiet. As we walked I kept my head down.

I though about what she said, about fear, and I knew I wasn't one to face fear easily. I wasn't brave, or strong like Merida and I wasn't a fighter like the others. I was Elsa, whoever that was. Every second I was here I began to question more and more on everything, especially me. Who was I? More importantly, who was Anna?

"Hold still," Rapunzel demand I heard Merida yelp as the blonde attempt to clean redheads cuts.

I curled up on the grass bed my back turned to them playing with the necklace around my neck. When we returned we both instantly crashed. This morning Rapunzel had awoke us demanding answers and instantly started to clean our injuries.

The sun was slowly raising and Merida and Rapunzel would be leaving to go into the Maze. The more I thought about the strange wall that surround us the more I questioned what was inside. From the horrible sounds that came from it and the stories I'd heard only briefly, it sound like a horrible place.

"How do you do it?" I asked Merida when Rapunzel left to find Jack for supplies.

"Do what?" She asked, I turned to face her, "Ye talken about goin into the maze?" I nodded and she shrugged, "Well it easy, ye just got ta be braver than the maze."

I raised an eyebrow, "Braver than the maze?"

"Not literally ye have ta take a chances know yer reason for going in is bigger that yer reason for fearing whats inside and staying out," she says. She stood up rocking on her heels. She then took her bag and belt wrapping it around herself. Next she grabbed her bow and arrows. She paused a moment looking at me closely, "Aye hope ye find yer place here Queen."

Yah so do I...

Jack Frost (P.O.V)

I patted Tadashi shoulder, "You coming?"

He laughed shaking his head, "Not this time Frosty, just keep Hiro safe in there."

I sighed shaking my head, "Whatever maybe next time bot boy."

It had been over three weeks of runs sinces Tadashi last went out with us. He had found something the last time he ran a round pent that matched the symbol with factor 3. A falcon with babwir in its mouth.

Slowly I started make my way to the others. Rapunzel stood her long blonde hair bl,owing freely in the wind. Crossing my arms I walked over to her tugging on a strand. She yelped, "Hair up, it coykd get in your face and block-"

"My eyes from seeing whats ahead," she finished, "I know Jack."

Taking a band from her wrist she wrapped it up into a high pony tail. I then looked at Hiccup who sat tying his shoes, than I looked at Hiro who struggked to get his belt situated. He'd been a runner for awhile but that didn't mean he was even pasted the firsted stage.

He was still in training, which ment he wasn't allowed to go into the center. It was the part of the maze that had more traps and more turns. I ruffled his hair and smiled softly, "Ready kid."

"Im not a kid," he says.

"Whatever you say, Weres Merida?" I asked the group.

Merida appeared her hair in a notted braid. "Im ah here!" She looked up at the wall the door begain to open, "Lets get this over with."

We all got in running position, "I heard you ran into some mockingjays," I said quietly to Merida who was on my right. Hiro was on my left and Rapunzel on the left of him. On Meridas right was Hiccup.

Who looked at Merida while her gaze was on me, "Just taken the New Meat ta carve her name inta the wall," she shrugged.

I smiled remembing the small platinum haired blonde I'd met only yesterday. She reminded me of one of those glass dolls a few small children had around here. Like one fall and shed shatter. She'd do well probably as one of the cooks or cloths patchers.

"Ah how'd she reacted," I chuckled.

Merida frowned her eyebrows than looked forward, "Better than anyone elses ive seen, she didn't make a peep, when she fell and aye stayed with her she layed barley flinching as the cut into her, shes stronger than ye think," she paused, "Im think of making her my side runner."

I nearly chocked on my own spit, "What no-"

"Shh no talking while running," Rapunzel hissed.

The doors were opened and we quickly began to run into the rock walls of the maze. I grinned my teeth. There was no way Snowflake could be Meridas side runner. A side runner was the one who ran along with another to give back up.

Since Tadashi hadn't been running we were uneven. Tadashi used to be my side runner and Hiro ran with Hiccup and Rapunzel and Merida. It used to be someone else before Hiro but id rather not mention her.

Anyway now Hiccup was my side runner, and Rapunzel ran with Hiro leaving Merida alone. At the way Tadashi is acting I don't think he was gonna run with us again. An id already gave Merida permission to find someone she'd like to run with her.

She had to pick someone who was trust worthy and able to well run. There were plenty of good people in the group. I knew Merida was smart and knew what she was doing with alot of things but picking Snowflake someone we didn't really know and hadn't grown to trust, that was crazy and stupid.

As we ran we made it to the place right outside the center. We stopped, "You can't pick the New Meat as your side runner, you don't know if you can trust her!"

Merida rolled her eyes, "Ye just have ta give her chances ay have this feelin she is more than she appears."

"Whatever Merida im the leader and I say no, now take west me Hiccup will run with you, this time, Rapunzel, Hiro, with me were only going a little bit farther today will keep doing it intill you get a bit more of a understanding of what your up against," I said the last part to Hiro.

"Lets do this," Hiro cheered.

The center was a bit darker and damp than the outer part of the maze. The wall also became more impact. It wasn't exactly the center of the Maze it was just what we called it. We never been to the real center however Tadashi believe thats are way out.

However we couldn't just pack everyone and go expecially since we didn't know were it was or whether Tadashi hunch was infact true. The sound of are steps splashing into the puddles under our feet was the only sound period.

We had made it about a mile or so deeper when I made the other stop. Something didn't feel right. I looked at Rapunzel from her expression she got the same feeling. Hiro looked at both us. "Do we start marking now?"

I nodded at him. We marked the tunnels daily to map how they move when we check the next day. So far we decovered multiple different stages of the Maze six so far. I pulled out some pait from my bag and took a breath.

Something was gonna happen. "Its gonna be okay, " Rapunzel assured me.

I nodded, I hoped so.

ELSA P.O.V

I hadn't found a job today everything just didn't seem like something I coukd handle doing everyday. The sun began to set and I followed the camp towards the entrance of the wall open doors. They'd be closing soon. When we reached the entrance I felt an odd pull.

I felt slightly dizzy but that was probably lack of sleep. I watched as the firat runner emerged it was Hiro. Tadashi the one who had been showing me all the jobs ran to himand ruffled his hair. I smiled it was a warming sight but something about it was heart breaking.

Next came Rapunzel who started to blabber to abundle of people. Jack was next and my heart skipped a beat at his smile. I'd say it was heart warming but that wasn't the case. It wasn't even close it was like id been dropped in ice water.

I looked for Merida and the other boy HIccup to come out. However they didn't seem to be coming yet. While the others greated the retured runners I pushed yowards the Maze doors looking in, I felt a sudden rush of fear and worry.

However it drifted away when I seen familiar red girls. I was releaved intill I seen her face. It was wet with tears. My heart began to pound.Jack attend turned to the Maze doors. They began to screech and I knew the were gonna close.

"Merida come on," Rapunzel shouted smiling but it fade, "Weres Hiccup?"

Merida stood at the entrance,"Ay don't know ay thought he came back," she covered her mouth, "Oh no," she started to turn.

"Merida the walls closing!" Tadashi pointed.

"Ay, Hiccup," she says. I could see her fear in her eyes.

She started to go back into the maze. Everyone began to yell her name. The runners exchanged looks and started to run towards the quickly closing opening. However the other campers grabbed them, "You can't go, you'll die!" "We can't loses you all" were some of what they said.

"Let go!" Jack demand fighting against them.

I looked from him to the closing entrance. I bit my lip I could see Merida tbrough the closing crack she held her head up brave and was mouth what looked to be a prayer of some sort. Suddenly her words began to echo in my head.

' ye have ta take a chance know yer reason for going in is bigger that yer reason for fearing whats inside and staying out, '

And with that I did it. I ran quickly sliding into the small opening ignoring my name being yelled. I felt my fingers brush against the rock wall and I jumped quickly making it just before the entrance closed.

I turned looking at the closed wall, what had I done. I then looked to Merida who shock her head and wiping her tears, "Yer crazy," she says.

"That means you are to, " I let out a breath, "Now lets find Hiccup."

"Ye know the chances of surviving tonight is impossible," she tells me, "Why did ye come?"

"Cause my reason for staying out wasn't as Important as going in," I smiled softly trying to ignore my fear.

"Thank ye Elsa," she says.

"Anything for a friend," I said.

"Were friends?" She asked, my eyes widen never thought about whether she was friends with me, "Im just kidding."

A loud roar came from deep in the maze. I gulped but still said, "Lets go."

A/N:A bit rushed in the end but I have to get to bed and I wanted to finish this before I went to bed. Enjoy.
