Chapter Thirty

A/N: This chapter will mention a character and storyline from my S.W.A.T fanfiction - Fix You.

'You want to take her abroad?' Owen raises an eyebrow. 'Where?'

'Well, we were thinking Marrakesh.' T.K. replies. 'She's mentioned a few times that she wants to go there.'

'It will be a present for her 18th so it won't be for a while.' Carlos adds. 'We were thinking of taking her for a week or so.'

'I don't have any issues with that. It is completely up to you guys how long you want to take her for.' Owen shakes his head. 'But are you two sure you can handle Ave alone?'

'I think we'll manage.' T.K. laughs. 'Hopefully, she'll be too distracted by what we'll be doing there to pull any of her usual antics.'

'However, knowing Avery, she'll find a way.' Carlos points out, chuckling. 'We've got time to prepare for whatever she'll throw our way.'

.

It's been a few days, Jason and Megan are having a coffee date and so T.K. has planned a brother/sister day with Avery. It's 10:30am and Avery is still in bed. T.K. has been waiting an hour for her to get up so he walks into her room and rips open the curtains.

'Ugh.' Avery shields her eyes. 'It burrrnsss.'

'Come on.' T.K. claps his hands. 'You can't spend all morning in bed. We've got lots to do.'

'Five more minutes.' Avery groans, pulling her duvet over her head.

'You said that half an hour ago.' T.K. pulls her duvet off of her.

'I'm tirrreeeddd.' Avery whines.

'Well,' T.K. sighs, 'maybe you shouldn't have stayed up all night reading when you knew we were going out today.' He adds. 'We're leaving in half an hour. We'll go for breakfast.' He walks out of the room muttering as he does, 'or lunch by the time you're ready.'

Half an hour later, Avery is ready. She walks into the kitchen, where T.K. and Owen are, with her kindle in her hands. Her eyes are glued to it so T.K. swipes it out of her hand.

'Hey!' Avery exclaims.

'You're not reading this thing all day.' T.K. raises an eyebrow. 'What are you reading anyway?' He goes to look at the screen but Avery stops him.

'You really don't want to know.' She warns him.

'Don't tell me what to do.' T.K. huffs before looking down at the kindle screen. 'Oh for fuck sake.' He looks away when he reads a particular line causing Owen and Avery to laugh.

'I warned you.' Avery laughs.

'Son, you should know by now that when Ave is using her kindle, it's to read her spicy books or whatever they're called.' Owen says.

'Yes, dad,' Avery laughs, 'they're called spicy books.'

'Come on then, trouble,' T.K. pats his hand on his sisters shoulder, 'before you scar me even more.' Avery turns to face him.

'Do you want some recs? It will give you and Carlos some id-' Avery starts to say but T.K. clasps his hand over her mouth.

'Nope.' He shakes his head. 'Not happening.' Avery raises her eyebrows. 'What's that look fo- eugh!' He rips his hand from her mouth and wipes it on his pants leg. 'Did you just like my hand?'

'Maybe.' Avery smirks. Owen laughs and shakes his head. 'Let's go then.' She says as she walks to the door.

'Wish me luck.' T.K. laughs slightly to Owen before following his younger sister.

.

A few hours later, Avery and T.K. have just sat down in Starbucks. They've spent some time shopping and have stopped for a little break.

'How you feeling?' T.K asks, noticing she looks worn out.

'Good.' Avery lies.

'Ave.' T.K. raises an eyebrow.

'T.K.' Avery also raises an eyebrow, mocking her brother. T.K. keeps staring at her. 'Fine.' She huffs. 'I'm a little tired and achy but that's to be expected. I'll be fine after I've rested for a bit and had some food.'

'I know you don't really like people telling you this, but, I'm really proud of how far you've come with your eating.' T.K. tells her.

'Thanks.' Avery smiles slightly. 'I'm proud of me too.' She adds, doing a little dance in her seat.

'What do you want?' T.K. questions. 'I'm going to go order.'

'Caramel latte and cheese and ham toastie, please.'

'Be right back.' He nods before standing up and walking over to the counter to order. As he does that, Avery gets out her phone and looks through her different socials. Over the past few weeks, she has been posting book content to her Tiktok and Instagram. On a whim, she checks how many followers she has and her jaw drops when she sees she's accumulated just over 30k followers.

'What. The. Actual. Fuck?' She says to herself, just as T.K. returns.

'What happened?' He asks as he sits and places their drinks and food down.

'Look at this!' Avery shoves her phone in his face.

'Geez, Ave.' He laughs, taking her phone. He looks at the screen and sees the follower count. 'Holy shit.' He looks back up at Avery and hands her her phone back. 'You only had a couple thousand the other day.'

'I know! I posted a tiktok about some spicy books and it went viral.' Avery tells him as she scrolls to the video she was talking about.

'How viral?' T.K. asks, intruiged.

'2 million views.' Avery smiles.

'Really?' T.K. raises an eyebrow. Avery says nothing, just shows him the view count. 'Okay, you aren't kidding.' He laughs. 'Way to go.' He raises his hand and they high five.

'I think this has given me the confidence to post more regularly.' Avery tells him.

'Ave, you can do anything you put your mind to.' T.K. says. 'You can take this really far.'

'Thanks, bro.' Avery smiles.

'Any time, baby sis.' T.K. smiles back.

.

The next day, Jason, Avery and Megan are at the Strand residence. They're watching a movie when Avery and Jason's phone pings. The both look at the message they've just received before looking back up at each other, mouths agape.

'What. The. Fuck?!' They both exclaim together.

'What? What happened?' Megan asks, confused.

'We both have a friend in L.A., Niamh Corrigan. Me and her were in therapy together and eventually she also became friends with Jason. Anyways, back before we met, I was involved in another mass shooting and S.W.A.T. helped me out, there was one officer in particular that helped me, Jim Street. Turns out Niamh is his sister.' Avery explains.

'She didn't know?' Megan questions.

'It's a long story.' Jason sighs. 'She was placed into the system when she was born.'

'Was it Niamh that texted you?' Megan asks.

'No, it was Jim.' Avery shakes her head. 'He visited me in hospital a couple of times after the concert. His text said Niamh wanted to tell us herself when she was ready. Niamh has always been sceptical when it comes to family and such so she probably needed time to process it all.' Her phone starts ringing. 'Hold on, he's calling.'  She answers the phone and puts it to her ear. 'Hey, Jim.'

'Hey, Ave. I just wanted to check that you got my message?' Jim says.

'I did.' Avery nods. 'Small world, huh?' She chuckles. 'Your text said that Niamh wanted to tell us though.'

'Yeah, um, about that.' Jim sighs. 'Niamh was rushed into hospital the other day. The doctors found that she has encephalitis, inflammation of the brain. She's also got increased intracranial pressure. They're keeping her in a coma until they can reduce the inflammation and pressure.'

'Oh my god.' Avery covers her mouth. 'Are they hopeful?'

'It's too soon to say. I'll keep you updated.' Jim replies.

'Thanks.' Avery responds appreciatively.

'Anyways, how are you healing?'

'It's going good.' Avery replies. 'Still taking it easy though.'

'That's good. Listen, I'm gonna have to go but like I said,  I'll keep you updated with what's going on with Niamh.' They both say goodbye before hanging up. Avey sighs and rubs her face.

'What happened.' Jason asks her.

'I need some air.' Avery mutters. She stands up and walks off.

'What was that about?' Megan asks confused.

'I don't know.' Jason says slowly. He then gets a text message from Jim giving him the low down of what he's just told Avery. He looks at it and sighs. 'Crap. Niamh was admitted to hospital. It's bad.' He looks at Megan. 'I better go check on Ave.' He stands up and walks to the backyard where Avery is sitting. He sits down next to her. 'Jim text me with a low-down of what happened.'

'That girl can't catch a break.' Avery laughs slightly. 'Well, that's the thing that bought us two together isn't it? We're both been through some fucked up things.' She looks at Jason. 'She's going to be okay, right?'

'She's tough.' Jason nods, not really answering the question. 'The doctors will be doing everything they can to help her.'

'I know.' Avery sighs.  'It was just a shock to hear.'

'Don't even think about running off to L.A. to see her.' Jason raises an eyebrow.

'Don't worry.' Avery laughs. 'L.A. holds quite a few bad memories for me right now. Plus, it won't do any good. Not just for my recovery but for my mental health.' There are a few moments of silence. 'Let's go back inside.' They both stand up.

'Day and night.' Jason says, pulling her in for a side hug.

'Day and night.' Avery responds hugging him back.
