Chapter Five

'Dad, are you okay?' Avery asks concerned. Owen wipes his mouth with a tissue before looking at his daughter.

'Sit down.' Owen says as he points to the couch. 'I want to talk to you about something.' Avery walks into the office, closes the door and sits down on the sofa. 'I'll be back in a few minutes.' He picks up the trashcan and walks out of the office. He empties the trashcan, cleans it out, has a drink of water and sprays some mint breath spray in his mouth. He returns to his office and closes the door behind him before joining Avery on the couch.

'What's going on?' Avery asks, worry in her voice. Owen takes hold of her hand.

'When I tell you this, I don't want you to freak out, okay?' Owen tells her and she nods. 'Back in New York, I started to get a cough. I'd had it for a few weeks so I went to see the doctor.' He continues. 'I thought it was only a virus. They did an x-ray and found tumours. I have cancer.'

'Cancer?' Avery says, her voice barely a whisper.

'It's only stage 1B. I'm getting chemotherapy, which is why I'm feeling so ill.' Owen says. 'I know I should have said something sooner, called you when I first-'

'Dad, it's okay.' Avery cuts him off. 'There are plenty of things I haven't told you.' She adds. 'When I had run away to L.A, it was a difficult day for me.'

'You don't need to me.' Owen shakes his head.

'I do.' Avery nods. 'And I kinda do need to tell you.' She adds. 'When I ran off the other day it had been a year since-since I tried to kill myself.' Tears start to drop from her eyes.

'You tried to kill yourself?' Owen asks quietly and Avery nods.

' I had erm- I had taken a ton of pills and walked into the highway and I was hit by a truck. I had a concussion, broke my leg and fractured my pelvis.' Avery explains.

'Why didn't your mom call us?' Owen queries.

'That's the funny part.' Avery scoffs as she laughs. 'Mom said that she'd told you. T.K. then said she didn't.'

'T.k. knows?' Owen asks. Avery wipes her eyes and stands up.

'I need some air.' She whispers before quickly exiting the office and making her way outside. She takes a deep breath and breaks down crying. She spins around to face the wall and punches it and punches it and punches it.

'You're gonna break your knuckles doing that.' She hears someone say. She turns around to see Megan Shepherd, a young girl that T.K. and Carlos have been helping recently.

'It's better than the other pain I'm going through?' Avery states.

'Are you okay?' Megan asks.

'I'm fine.' Avery lies. 'Are you looking for someone?'

'Yeah. T.K. Strand'. Megan nods. 'Speak of the devil.' She smiles as T.K. walks out of the station.

'There you are.' T.K. says to Avery. 'Hey, Megan, what brings you here?'

'I just wanted to drop by speak to you.' Megan replies.

'Have you two told each other your names yet.' T.K. asks the young girls. They both shake their heads. 'Avery, this is Megan, Megan this is my younger sister, Avery. T.K. introduces the two young girls to each other.

'It's nice to meet you.' Megan smiles at Avery.

'You too.' Avery smiles back. T.K. turns his attention to Avery.

'Are you okay?' T.K. asks her. 'Dad told me-'

'I'm fine.' Avery lies again as she tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. T.K. catches sight of her scraped and bloody knuckles. He gently takes her hand.

'What happened?' He asks her.

'Nothing.' Avery averts eye contact.

'She was punching the wall when I got here.' Megan speaks up.

'Ave?' T.K. raises an eyebrow at his sister.

'Yeah.' She nods quietly. He lets go of her hand.

'Let's get an ice pack on that.' He says. The three of them walk into the station and to the ambulance.

'I'll go and wait upstairs.' Megan says before walking off. T.K. opens the back of the ambulance, climbs in and gets some antiseptic wipes, an instant ice-pack out of one of the cabinets alongside a sleeve. He jumps back out, cleans Avery's knuckles with the antiseptic wipes, crushes the ice-pack, slips it into the sleeve and hands it to Avery. She wraps it around her knuckles and fastens the Velcro.

(for reference):

T.K. sits on the platform of the ambulance and Avery joins him. There is a minute of silence.

'Dad also mentioned that he told you about the cancer.' T.K. states and Avery nods, trying to fight back tears. 'It's okay to cry, you know.' T.K. tells her.

'I know.' Avery nods as tears stream down her face.

'Come here.' T.K. wraps his arm around shoulders and brings her closer to him. She rests his head on her shoulder.

'I feel like I'm losing everyone around me.' Avery sobs. 'Mom. You. Dad.'

'Dad is going to be fine,' T.K. reassures her, 'and I'm going to be fine.'

'You know you can't promise me that.' Avery shakes her head. 'Not in this line of work.'

'I know.' T.K. whispers quietly.

'I can't handle losing anyone else.' Avery shakes. 'I can't.' T.K. and Avery both sit in silence for ten minutes. T.K. continues to comfort his younger sister. Avery has stopped crying and dried her tears. As they're talking about some of their memories from when Owen used to take them both out, they're interrupted by Michelle.

'Is everything okay?' Michelle asks them.

'Yeah.' T.K. nods. 'Avery just punched the wall outside.'

'Do you mind if I take a look?' Michelle asks Avery.

'Go ahead.' Avery holds out her hand. Michelle sanitises her hands, puts some gloves on and removes the ice pack. She examines Avery's hand, her knuckles and the surrounding bones and muscles.

'It doesn't feel like anything is broken. They'll just be quite bruised for a few days.' Michelle says as she removes her gloves and places them into the bio-hazard bin on the ambulance. 'Just don't go punching any more walls.' She adds making Avery laugh. 'I gotta so inventory.' She hints to T.K.

'Right.' T.K. sighs and nods. He looks at Avery. 'Let's go upstairs to Megan.' T.K. and Avery both walk up the stairs and to the the kitchen where Megan is sat at the table.

'How's your hand?' Megan asks Avery.

'Not broken so I guess that's a good thing.' Avery smiles as she also sits down at the table.

'Why don't we go for a walk? You look a bit upset, it might help clear your head.' Megan suggests. Avery looks at T.K.

'Sounds like a good idea.' T.K. nods. 'Just make sure you that you take your phone and jacket with you.'

'I will.' Avery nods.

'I'm going to go and talk to dad so I'll let him know.' T.K. says before walking away.

.

Half an hour later, Megan and Avery are walking out of Starbucks with some coffee.

'So, if you don't mind me asking, what got you worked up earlier?' Megan questions.

'I'd rather not talk about it.' Avery says. 'You know, I've only just met you and all.'

'That's totally understandable.' Megan nods. 'Are you close with your dad and T.K?'

'T.K., yeah.' Avery nods. 'We're super close. My dad, not so much.' She adds. 'Let's just say that my mom made my dad out to be the bad guy when she was the one stopping all the contact.'

'I'm sorry that happened.' Megan sympathises.

'Yeah.' Avery exhales. 'I am too.'

'I noticed your tattoo, earlier.' Megan points out. 'How did your mom react?'

'She was angry.' Avery responds. 'Very angry.' She adds. 'In fact so angry that it got her killed.' There are a few minutes of silence. Megan goes to say something by Avery beats her to it. 'We should get back to the station.'

When Megan and Avery arrive back at the station, Avery goes and speaks to Owen to explain what happened last year whilst Megan speaks to T.K.

.

It gets to the evening. Since Owen and T.K. are on a 48 hour shift, Avery has curled up on the couch in Owen's office. Owen and T.K are stood in the doorway.

'I'm going to set her up with a therapist.' Owen states.

'Dad, you can't force her to see a therapist.' T.K. shakes his head.

'She's been through a lot. She can't keep all of those feelings in.' Owen says. They see her starting to stir and mutter. 'She's had nightmares pretty much every night since she's been living with us.'

'You think she has PTSD?' T.K. asks.

'I wouldn't be surprised.' Owen sighs. 'She's been through a lot. The psychosis. The bullying at school. What happened with Shianne. Finding out what Shianne was really like.' He lists. 'Did she tell why she tried to kill herself last year?' T.K. shakes his head.

'She was attacked when she was walking home from her friends.' Owen informs him. 'She got pretty bashed up. Her phone was stolen, her money, her jewellery. One night, she'd received some messages, some threatening messages.'

'And that was the day of the attempt?' T.K. asks.

'Yeah.' Owen nods. 'Look, we'll speak to her about therapy tomorrow. We'll give her the choice of a trial session and go from there.'

'Okay.' T.K. nods in agreement. 'What are we going to do if she doesn't agree?'

'Keep a close eye on her. We make sure that she's taking her meds and we just be there for her, like we already are.' Owen states.
