"Ask the Authoress!" Answers
Yay! It's answer time! Thank you to those who asked the questions! They're all very good ones!
These questions won't be answered in any particular order, although if you asked multiple questions, they'll be grouped together.
Shayandthehuntress asked: "How did you get into writing? I mean, was there a particular reason you started, or did it just happen?"
It's actually a little bit of both. I started writing many years ago, when I was twelve. After telling an acquaintance about all of these ideas I had in my head, ideas I wanted to talk about and express, she suggested I start writing the ideas down. So I picked up a spare notebook, a black pen, and took it from there. Everything I've accomplished over these past several years is rooted in that notebook, which I still have but never open (because my old stories are total crap).
The next three questions came from imani148dr: "When playing Skyrim, do you actually play as Ylva?"
Yes, I do. Ylva is a character I had before I started writing Honor and Glory. I had created her solely to be the Harbinger of the Companions, and I chose the name "Ylva" because it's an old Norse name meaning "she-wolf." In the media below, I have included pictures of my game Ylva.
After finishing Honor and Glory, I tried to get her as close to my fanfiction Ylva as possible, but there are still some differences (like the warpaint, eyeshadow, hairstyle, and the scars). The eyeshadow I added because I liked it, and the scar was the closest one to the one Ylva has in my fanfiction. Her hair is what I had to work with, since the vanilla hairstyles aren't all that great. The warpaint (which I like to call "the Harbinger's warpaint") may or may not make an appearance at some point in later updates.
"Which of the DLCs was your favorite?"
I have to say that I love all of them for different reasons. I love Dawnguard for the new vampire look, Castle Volkihar, the new Elder Scrolls, and the Snow Elves. It was the one I started playing first, and I was hooked on it for hours. I love Hearthfire because of all the new content it added, like the new food, ingredients, and of course the ability to adopt children and build your own home. But I think that Dragonborn is my favorite. I love it because it added another major quest to save the world as the Dragonborn, and not just as another hero, like Dawnguard. And I have to admit, I've thought about how awesome it would be if Miraak turned good and joined forces with the DB. Think about what could be accomplished!
"List these factions in order from most to least favorite:
Companions
Thieves Guild/Nightingales
Dark Brotherhood
College of Winterhold
Dawnguard."
Number one is and always will be the Companions. They have always been the faction I feel most drawn to, because I love the concept of a fighters guild that operates much like a family. Of course, then you throw Vilkas into that mix and I am sold.
A close second would definitely be the Thieves Guild for similar reasons. I thought the quest line was very intriguing and full of twists and turns I didn't expect. And I absolutely love the Nightingale armor. It's always been some of my favorite armor in the game.
I think that out of that list, the Dawnguard would be third, although I like working with the vampires about as much as I like working with the Dawnguard. I like the Dawnguard team as a whole, but Isran rubs me the wrong way. I don't like him, even though I know he's just trying to do his job. I would like the Dawnguard a whole lot more if someone like Celann was in charge.
It's a toss-up between the last two. I am not a mage. I don't like using magic in the game. I prefer to use weapons, so my magicka usually stays at its base level until I decide it's time to level up more. I also didn't really like the Dark Brotherhood guild/quest. I don't usually do the quest unless I am bored/have nothing else better to do at the time. But if I had to pick one over the other, I suppose I would pick the College. Sorry. Got no love for those assassins, it seems.
Eyeless-lulu asked: "How did you get into Skyrim?"
I got into Skyrim a little over two years ago, when my brother came home from a friend's house raving about this fantastic, medieval-style, open-world RPG. He kept going on and on about Skyrim, and finally decided to get the game for himself. The moment I started playing, I was hooked. My first character was a Nord woman named Shakira (which isn't a lore-friendly name, but I didn't know or care at the time). I'll never forget what it was like to start playing for the first time, finding out about all these quests and items and people you can find. To this day, I'm still discovering new things about the game.
Allie_is_firebird asked: "There's a button in front of you that will give you a life in Skyrim, but once you press it, there is no going back. Would you press it?"
Yes. Because Vilkas would then be real and I wouldn't be forever alone.
AbigailTheHighElf asked: "Do you think Cicero is adorable?"
Absolutely not. He freaks me out even still. I would rather face Alduin and Miraak at the same time than deal with Cicero again.
And the final five questions came from Liz_Danly: "What made you want to write Honor and Glory?"
I don't have a deep or profound reason why I decided to write Honor and Glory. At the time, I had just gotten Wattpad, and had been busy writing an X-Men fanfiction, when I started getting into all these other Skyrim books. I thought about how cool it would be to write a book about my favorite video game. So I started planning, getting things ready, and then I took the plunge and started writing. And here I am now, ten months later, with a plethora of successful Skyrim fanfictions on my profile.
"What was the inspiration behind Honor and Glory?"
Well, the main inspiration has to come from Skyrim itself. Without it, I wouldn't have thought about writing Honor and Glory. Regarding what my inspiration was for choosing to write about the Companions, I think the reason would be because I noticed there weren't that many Skyrim fanfictions that focused on the Companions. Interestingly enough, I almost wrote about the Thieves Guild first. Ylva was almost a no-good Dragonborn thief, and Brynjolf was almost her love interest. To this day, I wonder what that would've been like, but I certainly don't regret choosing to write about the Companions instead.
"What made you want to continue the series, and had you planned to write a sequel when you started writing Honor and Glory?"
I didn't want to end Ylva's adventures with her getting married to Vilkas and leaving it at that. When I started thinking about a sequel, the Dragonborn DLC storyline kept coming to mind. Questions like, "How would Ylva handle having to save Skyrim again? Would Vilkas come with her? What could happen on an adventure like this?" all came up. I didn't have a sequel planned when I started writing Honor and Glory. I started planning for it when I started writing the last few chapters of Honor and Glory, and began writing it just after finishing the first novel.
"How did you push through writer's block while writing the series?"
I don't really have some magical cure-all for writer's block. What I do have is some advice I got from a writer's program my mother got for me several years ago: Write every day, even if it's not much. Writing, even if it's just a little, helps push through writer's block by making your brain focus. I don't always follow that advice, but I always remember it when the going gets tough.
"And finally, what advice do you have to give your readers?"
I assume you're talking about writing advice and not life advice. If it's life advice you're talking about, then my advice is don't take candy from strangers, especially if they drive vans. But if you're referring to writing advice, my advice is this: write what you want to write. Don't let anyone tell you what you can or can't do, and don't let anyone bully you into writing something you don't want to write. I've been there; I had someone bully me into writing a story that I did not enjoy writing, but I didn't want to hurt any feelings, so I kept quiet about it. Don't write for a public you don't yet have; write for yourself, and love what you write. And if people love what you write, it's a double win.
So those are my answers to all your lovely questions! Thank you so much for asking them! I had loads of fun answering them!
More updates coming soon! Love and sweetrolls!
