Chapter 7
Day 2 in August 17, 2017
Time: Irrelevant
"Give me those eyes."
Laine yelled, finally finding the strength to run but before she could even take a step, it lunged at her. Her back hit the grass and she fought off the student that was now on top of her, its mouth open wide, saliva, dripping on Laine's face. Its teeth were pointed like those of shark's and it started getting paler and paler, its black hole eyes pulling her in its darkness as it stared her down face to face.
A knife went through its cheeks out of nowhere and it cried in anguished pain, its head arching upwards. The thing still refused to let her go even though it was already bleeding purple blood, it latched onto her desperately, sharp nails digging in Laine's arm.
"Hey, hey, hey. Don't tell me I'm the only one who brought a knife!" James said on a rush, his hands trying to pry the thing off her.
"I brought one too, asshole!" Mark yelled and proceeded on stabbing the monster right on its back, purple ricocheting in the air and hitting both James' and Mark's faces. It cried even more, louder this time and sounding more possesed. James got annoyed at it and pulled his knife from its face. He stabbed it back many times until it's grip loosened. He left his knife on top of its head and helped Mark out in pulling it off again, both of them yelling in aggression.
Josh came running in and pulled Laine out from underneath, separating them both. Laine cried and instinctively hugged Josh that's sitting next to her but before they could even celebrate, the now almost dead student let out a horrifying siren-like scream. Its mouth wide open, forming an "O" that's as big as a dinner plate. It made the other remaining students in school to stop dead on their tracks and their heads turned towards them in an eerily synchronized manner.
On that moment, everything seemed on pause. Their breaths became shallow and their eyes just started noticing that they're already surrounded. The students were perfectly scattered in a careful pattern and they were stuck in the middle of the field, enormous but too small to make their way out. Mark's eyes found Fei, Sammy and Mae running towards them and everything was on slow motion, as their eyes reflected the shared fear they were feeling-- the feeling of doom of being trapped, the dread of failing to get away.
"RUN!" Mark yelled at the top of his lungs, and just like that time started turning on it's gears again and they dashed off. The monsters started chasing after them, mouths wide open and snarling like dogs. Mark's hand met Fei's in the middle of the chaos and he pulled her along, refusing to let go.
James took the lead and created a path for them, slicing everything that came in their way. There was a purple bloodbath, limbs and other body parts scattered everywhere. Sammy and Josh helped out with the slashing, their posts dedicated for guarding the sides and Mae was there to cover them, hammering everything down with her frying pan.
Fei And Mark were in the rear and just as vicious as the others. Fei gritted her teeth as she jabbed the students one after the other with her large kitchen shears, her hands getting slippy because of their blood. Another one ran towards her and she stabbed it right in the neck but she failed to recover her shears back.
"Mark, give me your bag!" she yelled. She gave up trying to pull her weapon out and used Mark's bag to slam the monsters on their head. Everyone was on a killing spree, only Laine was the only one in the middle, weaponless and barricaded by them.
"Here!" James yelled, opening up a window for them. They all entered fast and ran again with no rest. The doors were too far for them to ran to and close and there are other windows that are left open that those monsters could slip into so they just chose to get away as much as possible.
They ran and ran, their shoes squeaking on the hallway floors. James was carrying the group, navigating them and feet drifting as he made sharp turns.
He made another turn and it was an unlucky one, the monsters were already there and they took off once they saw them. James tried to turn back but was met by another mob of monsters so he held his breath and turned back again, this time facing the front and running towards the monsters.
"Come on! We can make it!" he said, his finger pointing at the door that was in the middle of the hallway. It was a risky plan and they're heading in for a full on collision if they missed their chance but they didn't. They arrived at the door faster than the eyeless students and James slid it open, pulling them all inside. Everyone dove on to the floor and Mark was the one who was quick to recover and went back for the door to tuggle the lock. Just as he was done doing that, a rapid footstep approached from the outside and crashed onto the door. The one side of the sliding door collapsed and Mark was sent flying across the room with it's force.
"Mark!" Fei ran towads him and cradled his head, his brain a bit shaken from the impact. She looked at him with worry in her eyes, but the screams in the room pulled her eyes back to the others. One of them got in. That monster was the fastest runner among the others. It was taking the lead all this time, it was like the twisted version of James-- only this time it was leading a pack of monsters.
James let out an animalistic scream and lunged at it. "Barricade the door. Now!" he yelled once more and once the monster was successfully pushed out of the room, Sammy and the others had erected a long table against the open entrance. The table covered everything up to the door frame and all of them pushed as company arrived from the outside. Fei helped Mark to get up and they pushed too, adding their body weight against the barricade. They all grunted as the banging got louder and louder, the number of arms that's making the sound increasing.
Mae let out a yelp and another one got through, it's movement frantic and mouth frothing.
"It got in!" she yelled, voice fighting to be heard.
"How could you let it through?!" James yelled at her, too harsh for him to care.
"I'm sorry it slipped right beside me," she answered and the monster finally found them and started attacking. James kicked it away with a curse, his body still attached to the barricade they're holding onto.
"I--" James started, his voice out of breath, and his frame slightly sagging. "I don't think I could take another one head on." His voice turned into a dreadful whisper, exhaustion taking over his form.
"It's alright!" Mark stepped up this time, removing his hands off the table and standing on guard in front of them. "We'll just need to get away. We won't be able to hold that barricade forever so we have to leave this room before they trample us down. Once I got him pinned down, you guys will create a diversion so we could step out of this room. Divide them into two, use anything you could to block off your left and right side. We need to stay in the middle. From there, we'll push our way into the next room," he instructed. He held his knife tight and ran towards the monster, meeting it right in the middle of the room. His knife went through it's chest and he kept on pushing and pushing until it's tip touched the wall. He let out a strained yell as he gave all of his strength and gave it one last shove, burying the knife on the wall and completely pinning the monster on it.
Sammy quickly stood and grabbed two of the bulletin boards that's decorating the wall. She handed it down to the girls as Mark, Josh and James took a step back farther into the room. And just like a bullet leaving it's barrel they went on a mad dash. They rode the momentum of speed and force and their body crashed right into the remaining door, flinging it open. It startled the monsters outside and the door fell right above them, slamming their body right on the floor.
"Get lost!" James threw a chair outside and made space for Sammy and the others to enter. The girls used that opportunity to step outside and stand on that spot, placing the boards on their left and right side. The boys recovered and helped out with the pushing, too.
"Which side are we going?!" Josh asked.
"Go to the left." Sammy's head nodded towards the direction. "I saw a classroom when we ran earlier," she yelled.
"Got it!" Josh agreed and his voice turned into a grunt with all the force he gave. The heavy lifting was put on the left side, all the pressure of fighting off the mosters' strength and navigation resting on their shoulders. There was, Fei, Mark, James and Sammy to push through it. Behind them and where the right side was-- there was Josh, Mae and Laine who were just following after them, taking on the space the left team managed to make for them.
"Hey, look out!" Josh yelled when he saw a monster climbing over it's fellow monsters. It's sharp nails was ready to claw at Sammy who was too preoccupied at the moment. Josh left his post and it created a lot of tension on the right side. Both girls yelped at the loss of his strength and their grip on the board became messy, tilting and rocking because of Laine and Mae's uneven strength.
Josh slid his bag off his shoulder and came in swinging, smacking the incoming monster's head off. He thought it would be over fast but another one came and another one jumped after, it kept on going until he became too busy to care about his own team.
"Hold it properly, bitch!" Laine yelled at Mae furiously.
"I'm trying," Mae answered, her voice gruff with her struggling. She tried to match with Laine's strength but her hand slipped and a monster made it's way from her side of the barrier, making her squeak.
"Not this again!" Laine yelled, exhausted and eyes rolling at how Mae just dragged herself on the floor, backing away from the monstrosity that she let in herself. It was all her fault and Laine boiled in anger at how she was left alone to hold the board down. Their defense was crumbling, monsters were now pushing her back and clawed hands were reaching out to scratch her. She was having a really, really bad day. First, she was fooled into thinking that these freaks were pretty decent in conversations. Second, she got the skin of her arms peeled off and now she was paired up with the worst person in the group. The negativity filled her head and it got to her. With her anger in it's peak and her being stuck at the heat of the moment-- her body moved on it's own. She let out a banshee-like scream and swung the board right at Mae's face. Laine she ran past the monster that broke through their defenses and raised a whole new wall at her new found position but now without Mae by her side. She was now left at the other side of the wall, her eyes temporary blinded and when she opened them she screamed in horror. She was now surrounded and Laine made no move to help her.
"Laine, what did you do?!" Josh went back on her side and held the board with her. His eyes that's underneath his gleaming glasses looked at Laine with terror.
The monsters charged towards Mae, completely ignoring Laine and Josh.
"MAE!" Sammy cried out her name and what happened next, happened too fast.
Nails dug at every part of Mae's body, ripping her flesh open. They bit and bit until one of the monsters finally succeeded on ripping a part of her neck off. Red squirted out of her body like hose and she let out one last pained scream before it was taken away along with her throat.
There was a moment of silence. Their eyes followed the carnage down below. A monster kneeled in front of Mae's disheveled corpse and ripped her eyes out of her head. It was smiling wide, its teeth all shown as it shoved her eyeballs into its own eye sockets. It fit perfectly and the once gaping black hole was now replaced with Mae's eyes, staring at them, impossibly wide.
Sammy let out a scream of anguish calling out Mae's name. She tried to get to her but everybody kept her back. There were tears in her eyes and vomit was rising up her throat. She felt defeated and failure as their leader. Now, Mae was gone. It was Mae. The sweet secretary that kept her on her toes all the time. It was Mae-- her sorrowful thoughts came into a halt when she saw Laine, her face showing no remorse of what she had done. She was only looking at the bloody mess with a neutral expression and she seemed relieved that the monsters were now busy munching on her bait. Anger took over Sammy and she grabbed Laine by the collar and threw her right in the open where there was no barricade protecting her and where there's monsters waiting for her. It was now Laine's turn to yell as the monsters started to surround her.
"How could you do that, President?!" Josh, pushed the board he's holding onto Sammy's hands and rushed towards Laine to help.
"Don't do it, you idiot!" James yelled from his permanent post but Josh didn't listen to him.
He tackled the monsters with his body and threw a punch left and right to keep them away.
"Go on!" he yelled at Laine as he kept on punching, his knuckles starting to bleed.
Laine was about to talk back but Josh cut her off. "Go, now!" he yelled again with too much intensity that it finally made Laine go straight up running. She was quickly engulfed into the protective barrier of the group and even though reluctantly, Sammy asked for her help in keeping the students out. She fought off her anger for now and made a mental note to release it upon Laine later.
"Josh, come back, now! We're already moving!" Sammy yelled as they scooched closer and closer to the next room.
"I-" he shoved another monster." I can't," he said, his eyes started watering, shining against the dimension's nightly green light. "You guys should go on and Laine..." his eyes flickered towards Laine, his brown irises meeting her blue ones. "You have to survive... for my sake," he said lastly before a swarm of students blocked off their sight of him.
Everyone shared a pained expression and Sammy called for him one last time but sadly, no one answered back.
This time, something tugged at Laine's heart. A tear ran across her face and guilt finally started settling in when another life was lost because of her.
