Ocean Short Story

I grasped at the watery hand that was before me, flowing right through it. I tilted my head and looked out at the figure in the waves towering over me. I heard odd sounds coming from the oceanic figure, almost as if it was trying to communicate with me. The sheer beauty and oddness of the whole situation was more than I could handle, but for some reason I still felt a sense of calm.

"Eudoria..." The watery figure echoed, its voice sweeter than I could have ever imagined. I closed my eyes to take in everything, feeling myself lose my balance and fall straight towards the water. "Eudoria...Eudoria!"

"Eudoria!"

I opened my eyes and stared up at my ceiling. I had been having that same dream again. It was very vivid and felt so real. I always wondered why I had this dream every time my family was visiting my aunt and uncle at their beach house. I looked outside of the window to the bedroom I was staying in, seeing the beautiful view of the ocean.

Just like the ocean in my dream.

I shook the thought of it all out of my head and got out of bed, shuffling towards the door to answer whoever was calling me. "Yes?" I called back out. "Eudoria, hurry and get ready, we're going to spend the day at the beach." My mom told me. I smiled, getting all excited at the prospect of spending a whole day at my most favorite place in the world.

I hurriedly got ready - brushing of the teeth, showering, getting dressed, the works - and shuffled outside to meet my family in my aunt and uncle's car. I hopped in, sitting between my parents in the backseat of their little van. My mom smiled at me and placed a camera in my hands. "This is for you. Consider it an early graduation present. Take whatever pictures you'd like." I gasped and looked at the camera, picking it up and seeing it from every sort of angle. "Thank you so much, mom!" I cried happily as I hugged her.

My aunt and uncle smiled at the sweet scene and pulled out of their driveway, heading straight for the beach. I could have used up all of the battery life in my camera just taking photos of the views I saw outside the window as we traveled. But I had to muster up all of my willpower to save my photos for the real beauty, the beauty I saw every night in my dreams - the ocean.

We finally pulled up the beach and I nearly leapt out of the car. After looking back at my parents to make sure they knew where I was going, I made a bee-line right for the shore. The beach was in rare form today, as it was completely empty except for my family. I guess it pays to go to the beach when it's cold and very early.

This just gave me all the opportunities I needed to get amazing photos. I ran up and down the sand snapping photos, wading in the water up to my calves in order to get just the right angles. I smiled back at my family who was lounging on the beach and talking with one another and snapped a candid photo. It would be something I would frame, a nice memory of my happy family in the most beautiful place in the world.

Lost in the moment, I finally snapped back to the task at hand only to find that my camera was gone, completely snatched out of my hands. I gasped audibly and started looking around at the sand to see if I dropped it somewhere. I couldn't see it anywhere. I started panicking, crouching down and scooping out piles of sand to see if it miraculously would turn up.

All of a sudden, I felt something hard bonk me on the head. "Ouch! Hey, what are you-" I turned around to see my camera staring back at me.

Being held by a watery hand.

My eyes widened and my body tensed. It was exactly like the hand from my dreams. I looked up to meet eyes with the same watery figure I had seen in many nights before. I didn't feel the same calmness I felt in my dreams now that I was being acquainted with this figure in real life.

I almost screamed, but the water hand reached out and gently covered my mouth. Surprisingly, I didn't inhale any water. My lips tingled at the touch and I looked out to see that the watery hand was melting away, revealing a human hand. I looked up and saw that the hand was connected to the watery figure. All the water melted off of the figure revealing the body of a man. His closed eyes slowly fluttered open to reveal beautiful eyes that mirrored the exact color of the ocean surrounding us.

He looked at me, his hand still covering my mouth. I could tell that he could sense my shock, so he quickly pulled his hand away. He stared at it in awe, waving it around a little. Then he looked at his feet, his legs, his chest, and finally feeling the light blue hair that was crowning his head. "It worked...it really worked!" He gasped, such strong emotion in his words.

I still gaped at him in shock. He looked back at me and stepped closer so that we were only a foot apart from each other. "I am sorry for the shock I must have caused you. I needed you." He held my hands in his. "Thanks to the touch of a human, I was made into a human as well. I am so happy right now. Thank you for your kindness."

Suddenly, I felt more at ease. Even if what I did witness was indeed some sort of miracle that couldn't be explained, his calming voice and sincerity really helped ease my jumping nerves. "Y-You're welcome..." I stuttered. "But, how, and why, and...who are you?"

He pointed at himself, releasing his hold on my hands. "I am Cozumel. I am an Oceandweller. My people are made entirely of the sea and can only become human if we touch with a human. I have always dreamed of visiting the land where the humans lived. I have heard many good things. I thank you for giving me the chance at a new life."

He reached out and hugged me tightly. I stumbled backwards a little bit, stunned by his random display of affection. I was still so confused by everything that had just happened, but this boy and his situation greatly intrigued me. I suppose I could learn everything along the way of getting to know him. That is, if he even would try to see me again after this.

He looked back at me, his gorgeous eyes piercing into mine. "What are you called, kind woman?" "I am Eudoria." He smiled. "What a pleasant name for a pleasant human." I can't say that I didn't blush at this random, but sweet, compliment.

He took me by the shoulders and stared at me with a huge grin.

"Lovely Eudoria, please show me your world!"
