Lonely Boy - The Rewrite

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!

The alarm clock had been blaring at full volume for over 10 minutes, yet the boy in bed managed to sleep through it all. A pillow was over his head and his blankets covered the rest of him; it was as if there wasn't anybody occupying the bed. The door to his room opened revealing an older woman with short blonde hair. She was dressed in an elegant pencil skirt and blouse, carrying a folder with papers spilling out of it. "Aish, Aaron, out of all days to sleep in..." She muttered under her breath.

She shook the body underneath the covers gently. "Aaron, you have to wake up, you're going to be late for school." No movement. She shook him a little harder. "Aaron." Her voice was sterner this time. Still, nothing. Exasperated, she sighed and snatched the pillow from on top of his head and ripped off the covers. The boy shivered at the cold air suddenly surrounding him and opened his eyes. His mother stood over him, her hands on her hips. A classic mad mom move. "Aaron, I've been trying to get you up for over 15 minutes! You know how important this job interview is and you're going to make me late." She started pulling the drapes and opening all his windows, the sunlight illuminating his room.

The boy winced at the pain the sun brought on his tired eyes and sat up. "Sorry, I was up all night again." He looked at the dog-eared copy of Shakespeare's Macbeth lying next to him. His mother walked back over to him and picked up the book. "Did you at least finish it?" Aaron nodded. "Yeah, he went psycho." The woman laughed. "Yeah, that's a big part of the book." She sighed, checking her watch. "You better be ready in five minutes, otherwise you're going to be reading as you WALK to school." Aaron laughed. "Alright, alright, I'll be downstairs in a second." His mother left the room and ran down the stairs. Aaron set his feet down on the carpeted floor of his room and sighed. "Another day in this misery."

After getting ready, he sulked downstairs, his hoodie falling in front of his face. He went outside and met with his mother in the car. He sat in the passenger seat and shut the door. His mother laughed and pulled the hoodie off from his face. "We're not the Addams family, why do you always look so dark with your black jeans and hoodie over your face?" He shrugged. "I don't know." But in reality, he did. She sighed. "You're a strange cookie." The nickname made him smile.

It was only a short 10 minute ride before they were parked in front of the school's drop-off area. "Alright sweetie, I have to leave for my interview, but have a good day at school!" Aaron turned back to her and faked a smile. "I always do." His mother smiled, not being any the wiser. She drove off, not before blowing her son a kiss. He smiled, but his happiness quickly melted once he turned back to see his school. A dark and dreary place where the weak were trampled upon and the brutish and conniving were at the top of the food chain. At least in his mind.

He walked through the halls of his school, feeling the stares of his fellow students. "Hey vampire boy." A girl remarked, surrounded by her friends. He just passed by her. A group of boys, one carrying a football, ran towards him. "Freak alert!" The boy jeered, throwing the ball into his chest. It hit Aaron and bounced off, the jock catching it. All the boys whooped and cheered. "Stay out of the way, goth freak." The football jerk hit Aaron's shoulder with his own before leaving with his group. Aaron sighed and pulled his hoodie down towards his face. "Yeah mom, I always have a good day." He sarcastically said.

He kept walking, his vision a little distorted because of the hoodie blocking the upper part of his eyes. He took a couple of steps before he felt somebody crash into him and felt them hit the floor. He chuckled a little bit, thinking one of the idiot jocks that picked on him finally fell on his butt. "I told you to stop doing that, now look where it got you." He remarked, not looking up. Instead of the usual unintelligent grunts, cusses, or name-calling, he only heard a slight groan. A high-pitched groan. Way higher-pitched than any football jock.

"I-I'm really sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going." A girl's voice? Aaron lifted his head and removed his hoodie from his line of vision. He looked down and saw a beautiful girl sat on the floor. She had books and papers sprawled around her and a pair of glasses lying next to her, the right lens a little cracked. Her long, shiny chestnut hair was pulled into a high ponytail and her petite figure was clothed with a skirt, black tights, Mary Jane shoes, and a striped sweater. "I-If you don't mind, just please don't step on my glasses, they were very expensive!" She pleaded. Aaron snapped out of his daze and took action. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, I thought you were someone else." He apologized. The girl looked up - not at him, mind you, because she couldn't see where he was - and smiled. "It's really okay, b-but could I ask you to help me find my glasses?" She felt around with her hands, but wasn't even close to where they were.

Aaron saw the glasses and grabbed them. "Aw man, they cracked." He lamented, cleaning the lenses off with his shirt. "Aw, really? Well, it's okay. As long as I can still see out of them." The girl giggled. She took her glasses back and put them on, the crack more visible than it was. Aaron couldn't help but stare at her because he found her so beautiful, broken glasses and all. She tilted her head and suddenly remembered. "Oh man, my books! I'm going to so be late for class." She cried. Aaron snapped out of his second daze and started gathering all her important books and documents. He gathered them all up and gave them to her. "Here you go. Can I help you up?" He stood up and offered his hand to her. The girl smiled and took his hand, standing up. "Thanks a million." She giggled.

"No problem, and again, I am really sorry. I feel terrible. Is there anything I can do to make it up to you?" Aaron asked. "Oh no, it's alright, it was an accident. I'm just sorry that you got caught up in it. This kind of stuff only happens to me." She sighed. "It does? Why?" "Because I'm a super klutz. At least that's what they called me in my old school. Even though this is my first day in a completely new school, I'm sure the nickname will travel quickly." Aaron was utterly shocked. Even this pretty, nice girl was called names? That didn't make sense to him at all. At least with him there was a reason, right? "O-Oh, I'm sure it won't." He couldn't say the kids at this school were nice, but he knew that she would be popular here. She had it all - beauty, kindness, and she was super cute. "I hope not!" She giggled and  tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ear and smiled up at Aaron. "I'm Abigail, by the way." "I'm Aaron, it's really nice to meet you." Aaron thought for a moment. "You know, your name actually means 'beautiful,' so your name really suits you." Abigail's eyes went wide and a big grin stretched across her face. "Oh my! Thank you. I really like the name Aaron too."

Aaron smiled. He looked around before seeing that mostly everyone in the hallway was staring at them. He realized that by her talking to him, he could potentially ruin her chances of becoming popular and liked at this school. Anybody that talked to or hung out with Aaron was ostracized just like he was. He didn't want that for Abigail. He put his hoodie up so that it fell in his eyes yet again. "You better leave now. You wouldn't want the monster to come out and get you." Abigail's sunny disposition become one of fear. "The monster?" She asked timidly. "Yeah. At least, that's what they all call me. Best if you get out of here before the monster ruins you." He walked past her and didn't bother to turn around. Abigail turned around to see his back faced to her. She raised an eyebrow before tightening her grip on her books. "I'm not going to give up on you just like that." She resolved before turning on her heel and walking to her first class.

Aaron looked over to see her walking away and sighed. "Hopefully it won't be the last time that we meet...even if I am a monster."
