33.

I STOOD THERE, watching as the paramedics carried Freddie into the ambulance as he laid on the stretcher; face and clothes stained with blood.

I tug Freddie's leather jacket tighter around me; his scent filling up my nose as I continue to stare, not knowing what was going to happen next.

"You should probably go in there," Max says, placing his hand on my shoulder. "after all, you're the reason why he almost died tonight."

"Thanks Max," I reply sarcastically, "I'm really feeling the love."

Max gives out a lopsided grin, then heads over towards Freddie's car as he starts the ignition; pulling out the death-threatening warehouse I was once in.

I sigh, knowing that what I was doing was probably stupid, but I had no other choice---I had to thank Freddie for saving me again.

A paramedic stepped out of the ambulance as he holds the door with his hand, nearly closing it before I stopped him.

"Wait!" I exclaim. He turns around and looks at me with a perplexed look.

"Let me go in there."

He nods, opening the door a little wider to let me through. I step inside the ambulance with the other paramedic and Freddie. The man in the stretcher kept opening and closing his eyes; almost fading away from the world around him.

I take his hand in mine, slowly entwining our fingers together. I look up and see Freddie's face in its current state, but what surprised me was that he didn't groan in pain and he didn't try pulling away. Instead, he did what I hadn't seen in months; something that was the most attractive quality about him.

He was smiling.

..

The hospital visit was complete torture. Nurses kept walking in and out of the waiting room; calling out different names. I wanted them to call Highmore so Freddie and I could just go home.

I began to let myself close my eyes, letting sleep take over me. Before I could fall under a dream, I heard the name I'd been waiting for being yelled out. Staggering to my feet, I walk over to the nurse, following her lead as she led me to the room Freddie was staying in.

"How long does he have before he can go home?" I asked the nurse. She clutched the clipboard to her chest; giving me a sympathetic smile.

"Doctor said that he's going to be staying here for two months, maybe three if he doesn't recover the way he's supposed to." I nod, looking down at the man below me.

"I'll give you a minute." with that, she left; closing the door behind her as it was now just Freddie and I.

It's always been that way. Ever since we met, it's always been Freddie and me.

I pull the chair up to the hospital bed, sighing as I take his hand in mine; hearing the heart monitor beep.

Tears began to form, and I knew I was bound to cry sooner or later. I had to say this, even if it meant crying a river.

"Freddie," I begin, squeezing his hand gently; reassuring him that I was there beside him. "Freddie, I just want to thank you. Not just for what happened tonight, but for everything.

"I know I can be a stubborn bitch, and I sometimes wonder why you always keep coming back. I know that I have been crude and irrational towards you, and I'd like to tell you that I'm truly sorry. I love you.

"If you can hear me," I swallow the large lump in my throat before continuing my sentence. "I just want you to know that I will be here when you recover. I will not stop until they say you can go home. Thank you, Freddie. And once again, I love you."

I let go of his hand, but before I walk over to the door, I place a kiss on top of his forehead.

"You're welcome."
