the sky lit a bright orange colour as the sun slowly set and darkness emerged through. birds were chirping, cars were honking and kids were screaming. flowers blossomed on trees indicating the start of a new season.
seonghwa was walking back home from work, just like he did every single day. the warm summer breeze grazed against the male's chill ones.
the savoury scent of fresh tteokbokki being made on a small cart at the corner of each street, enticing him to buy some. it was the taste of the sweet and spicy yet slightly salty from the soy sauce, paired with the chewy rice cakes, it made for a perfect dinner on a saturday evening.
the male walked up to the cart, ordering some extra to give a packet to the homeless on his way back. the world had done so many amazing things for him, and this was one of the small ways he wanted to give back to the world and the people in it.
once he paid, he held the bag in his hand carefully, making sure the sauce didn't leak from the box it was packed in. he was excited to see the look on the people's faces when he handed them the boxes of food. this was the bare minimum he could do for someone, and he didn't want them to thank him for doing so. a warm smile on someone's face would make his entire day even if it was previously bad.
soft music played through his earphones that connected to his phone that sat in the pocket of his pants. the main road was busy, hustling and bustling, several people going back home from work, many shopping and some just chilling.
amidst the busy roads of the city of seoul, seonghwa noticed a little boy sitting on the pavement. he had his head buried in his knees, most likely crying. he looked to be about five to six years old, scared of everything around him.
he slowly approached the little boy, keeping the bag of warm food on the floor. the brown haired male carefully crouched down to the boy's level and lightly tapped his shoulder.
the boy flinched and looked up, his cheeks stained with dried tears and eyes swollen from all the crying. his knee was scraped, bleeding and dirt sat on his hands.
"hey, why are you alone here sweetie?" the male asked softly
the boy just stared at him with a big pout, not saying anything but then looked away. seonghwa gave him a sweet smile, hoping that would get him a bit comfortable.
as a paediatric psychiatrist, he knew that he had to be very gentle and patient with the little boy since he would be absolutely terrified, all alone in the big scary city, and to the little boy, he was a stranger after all.
"it's okay, you don't need to speak to me." he said reassuringly
the boy furrowed his eyebrows at the brunette and his pout grew bigger.
"daddy told me no talk to strangers." the boy whispered, moving away from seonghwa.
"why are you alone here? is your daddy anywhere around here?" he said and the boy nodded a no.
seonghwa sat down on the pavement next to the boy, the people who were walking shot him weird looks. not like he cared about it, this kid's safety was more important to him.
the boy just stared at seonghwa, pre-cautious of the male's actions. he keenly looked at him, just staring him down.
the boy's hands were shaking up and down voluntarily, a form of calming his anxiety down.
"would you like to tell me your name? i'll tell mine too!"
the brown haired male scooted a bit closer to the boy, but not much to make him flinch again.
"well i'll tell mine first, hello, i'm seonghwa, and i work at the hospital a few minutes away from here, you?"
the kid contemplated his decision of telling personal information to a random stranger, hence just decided to tell him what his father told him. not to tell anything to strangers.
"daddy said don't tell strangers."
seonghwa sighed. this wasn't going anywhere yet he still thought it would be better if he stayed there and tried slowly convincing the boy.
"you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but it would be very helpful if you want to find your daddy," he said softly
the boy's wandered around, not looking at the male.
"yechan."
"yechan? that's such a beautiful name! it suits you!" seonghwa exclaimed, trying to make the atmosphere less awkward between the two.
yechan didn't particularly understand the words used but he sure did understand the tone of it and smiled a little, his tiny front teeth popping out, yet this whole time he wasn't making any eye contact with seonghwa, he found it too overwhelming.
"daddy gave me it when i was baby." he whispered lowly but loud enough for seonghwa to hear
"that's lovely to know sweetheart! but, may i know why you are here alone? it's not safe!"
yechan frowned. he didn't expect seonghwa to ask him such a thing, he didn't know how to put it in words. he very much wanted to but he didn't know how to express it, he never did. he had just learned how to speak a year and a half back, and his vocabulary was very limited. he understood a few things and tried to put two and two together to communicate but he got confused.
there was a big pout that formed on his face and eyes welled up with tears before breaking down into a fit of cries while flapping his hands together, trying to hit himself. he was frustrated at himself for not being able to say the things he wanted to get help.
"oh honey, what happened? it's okay, you can cry, nothing wrong with that."
he waited for the little boy to calm down without any touching, respecting the space he needed.
"i walk with daddy in park, we play but daddy went to pee pee but i see fly fly thing and went to see because it look nice but now am here," the boy said as his head still hung low
his words weren't too stable, neither was his grammar and yet he still managed to get the point across.
"so you were walking in the park with your daddy and he went to the restroom, during that you saw a butterfly and followed it and you're here, am i right?"
yechan nodded.
"your daddy must be worried and looking for you then, would you like to come to the police station with me?"
the boy pondered for a minute before speaking up.
"daddy said no go with strangers."
seonghwa sighed, a little frustrated. the boy's father had surely given him a good base about the safety of strangers, which was great of him to do, but that wasn't helping even a little bit in this
situation. despite that, he decided to keep his cool, he was dealing with a child, he had dealt with many that were much more uncooperative.
"maybe if you come with me to find your daddy, i can buy you an ice cream! you want an ice cream right?"
"daddy said me no take food from strangers."
fuck, this was tougher than he thought it would be.
"i not coming with you," he sassed
he tried, constantly kept trying until the boy finally complied, with the excuse that his daddy would buy him an ice cream if he went with seonghwa. the thirty-six year old male was pretty satisfied with his convincing skills, but it was put to use, somehow.
yechan didn't even hold seonghwa's hand on the fifteen minute walk to the police station, however, he became much more comfortable with seonghwa and trusted him more, which the male was of course happy as hell about.
the little one kept pointing at random things he found interesting and flapped his hands, or clapped them together out of excitement. he didn't talk much with the older due to his limited vocabulary, he felt safe with him.
the last few minutes of the walk there, yechan held on to seonghwa's left pinky finger for a little bit of support.
as they got closer to the station, there were sounds of someone wailing, and a ton of screams. seonghwa became worried. he surely did not want to take a child who was most likely neurodivergent and sensitive inside such an environment, despite it being safe or not.
cautious of the situation, he still took the boy inside the station, he had to do what he had promised. in there, a man with bright red hair, around his mid twenties sat on the wooden bench, face buried in his arms, sniffling and crying. he couldn't see his face.
a police officer dressed in a dark blue uniform approached seonghwa, asking him why he was here with a little boy.
"good evening sir, may i ask why you are here?" the tall officer with a deep voice asked.
"ah yes, well while i was walking back from work i found this little boy crying on the pavement. i dont know whose son he is but i thought it would be the safest option to bring him here."
the officer turned around and briefly looked at the man with red hair who sat a few feet away, then looked back at the little boy whose eyes were wandering elsewhere and mind in another world.
the red haired man looked up with puffy cheeks and a look of big relief was painted across his face, finally seeing his son after hours probably.
yechan's eyes fell on his father, seeing him after six hours at least. a large smile spread across the boy's lips as he tore away from seonghwa and ran to his father, screaming and flapping his hands.
the young male knelt down, taking his son in a tight hug, holding him close, peppering kisses all over his face. it looked as if the boy had started crying once again after meeting his father.
the male picked up the boy in his arms, caressing the boy's head that laid on his shoulder and walked over to the taller.
when he looked closely, damn was the boy a spitting image of his father, exactly the same face but with black hair instead of red.
his cheeks were puffy, eyes and cheeks were red, similar to his hair.
"thank you so much, i cannot thank you enough for bringing my son back to me."
he was a beautiful man, to say the least. the male had neck length hair with colours a mix of red and black. it looked like he hadn't dyed it in a while. he wore a simple, plain navy blue tank top along with a pair of skinny jeans that hugged his legs tight. his arm was also littered with tattoos; some big and some small. though they complimented his delicate features. he also owned five piercings on one ear along with three on the other and a lip piercing.
there was an awkward silence for a few seconds as seonghwa stared at the man, and the man stared at the wall behind him.
"uh, of course, it's my pleasure. seeing you both meet again even if it had just been a few hours, it made my day. im glad to be the one who brought him back to you, he's a sweet boy!" he said, smiling at the shorter male.
"oh my god, what can i do for you? you brought my life back to me i cannot just let you go like that! as a single dad i may not be able to do much but that is still not fair on my part, sir."
"absolutely nothing is needed, im happy you have your son back, that is all."
"no! i have to do something for you! it's not fair!" the male whispered, stomping his foot. it reminded the older of what his son did half an hour back. they looked the exact same.
"nope, i won't accept that, you don't need to do anything! im just very happy you were reunited with your son, that is all im happy about." seonghwa denied the request with a small smile, bowed and turned to walk out, but then looked at the bag of food in his hand. after a long, tiring day for the boy and father, they surely wouldn't have had the energy for anything.
he turned 180° and looked at the male that was packing his stuff with his son in his arms with a pout on his lips. it looked mesmerizing somehow.
seonghwa walked up to said male and handed out the food he had bought for himself, wouldn't be a problem to give them the food, he could buy more for himself later on.
he looked at the taller standing next to him, handing him a box of food.
"what's this?"
"for yechan. he seemed to like the smell of it on the walk here and had his eyes on it almost the entire time."
the male let out a small gasp.
"oh sir, i cannot accept this, you have done so much, im so grateful, this, this this i cannot accept this is too much, you brought me my baby and that is so much already, i cannot accept this!" the male rambled
seonghwa kept it next to his bag.
"just take it. it's for yechan." he said before he turned around and walked out the station.
seonghwa felt content with what he had done, he had just reunited a lost boy with his father. seeing the joy in both their faces made his day. and he gave them dinner too, which made him feel even happier. he loved doing such things.
