Chapter 5 - Why?

Todoroki's POV

The snow crunched beneath our feet as we stepped out of the car, the cold air wrapping around us like a thick blanket. Yaoyorozu adjusted her scarf and glanced around, her face still tinted pink from waking up moments ago.

"Thank you for letting me rest during the ride," she said quietly, her tone apologetic.

"It's fine," I replied, brushing it off. "You've been busy planning this whole trip. You deserved the break."

Her eyes widened slightly. "I...thank you, Todoroki, but I didn't plan everything. Mina and the others—"

"Still," I interrupted, catching her gaze. "You've done a lot. It shows."

For a moment, she looked like she didn't know how to respond. Instead, she gave me a small smile, polite and reserved, before changing the subject. "We should probably join the others. I'm sure they're already making a scene inside."

I nodded, but before we moved, I gestured toward her scarf. "That color suits you, by the way."

She blinked, her hand instinctively moving to her scarf. "Oh, um, thank you," she murmured, glancing away. "It's just a scarf, though. Nothing too special."

Typical Yaoyorozu—always modest, never letting a compliment stick.

We walked toward the hot springs lodge in silence, the snowflakes drifting lazily around us. I glanced at her from the corner of my eye. She was deep in thought, her brows slightly furrowed.

"You seem distracted," I said as we approached the entrance. "What's on your mind?"

She hesitated, her steps slowing. "It's...probably nothing. But, Todoroki, do you think it's strange how off everything has felt since we arrived at the hotel?"

I stopped, considering her words. "You mean the quirk theory?"

"Yes," she said, her voice gaining urgency. "At first, I thought it was just an illusion or a prank. But now, I'm starting to think it's something more...deliberate."

"What do you mean?" I asked, turning to face her fully.

She looked down, her fingers fiddling with the edge of her scarf. "During the ride, I started recalling little things—conversations we had before we got here, the plans we made—and some of it doesn't add up. It's like...like there are gaps. Memories that should be there but aren't."

I frowned, trying to replay events in my own head. Now that she mentioned it, there were moments that felt hazy, as though they'd been erased or rearranged. "You think we've been hit with an amnesia quirk?"

She nodded slowly. "It makes sense, doesn't it? We've all felt a sense of unease, like something isn't quite right. And if it is an amnesia quirk, it might explain why we're not as suspicious as we should be."

"That's dangerous," I said, my voice low. "If we've forgotten something important—"

"It could put us at risk," she finished for me.

For a moment, we stood in silence, the gravity of her realization sinking in.

"What should we do?" I asked.

She bit her lip, her gaze fixed on the lodge. "We can't confront the others just yet. If they've forgotten something, we need to ease them into realizing it. Otherwise, we might panic the group or trigger a worse reaction from whoever's responsible for this quirk."

"Makes sense," I agreed.

Her eyes met mine, determination sparking behind them. "Todoroki, I need you to help me figure this out. You're calm and level-headed—it's exactly what we'll need."

"Of course," I said without hesitation. "We'll figure this out together."

For a second, her expression softened, and she nodded. "Thank you. I trust you, Todoroki."

The words lingered in the air between us. There was something so earnest about the way she said it, something that made my chest tighten in a way I couldn't explain.

I glanced away, focusing on the snow falling around us. "Let's head inside. We can start by keeping an eye on the group during dinner. Maybe someone will slip up."

She agreed, and we walked toward the lodge side by side, the weight of her theory pressing on both of us.

As we entered the warm glow of the lodge, the sound of laughter and chatter greeted us. The others were gathered around a large table, arguing over which card game to play next.

For now, everything seemed normal.

But I couldn't shake the thought that something important was missing.

And if Yaoyorozu was right, we didn't have much time to figure it out.
