Act 43; End Game--
Trigger Warning!!
"Hey, hey- did you hear?"
"Isn't she the girl who kissed Oikawa Tooru?"
"The Oikawa Tooru? No way-"
"Wouldn't believe it even if I saw it myself!"
Ren slouched, trying to hide her presence as she walked the halls. That was until she bumped into a specific group. "Kyaaaa! Yoshi-su- that was so bold of you!!" A short female squealed, grinning. Sayaka rolled her eyes, clearly annoyed with a specific first year.
Hiyori then pointed at her with glowing cheeks, "first, you kissed Kageyama's hand and seemed so romantic- and then you up and all of a sudden kissed Oikawa Tooru?!" The brunette then raised her hands into the air, "I still can't believe it!" Ren then sweatdropped, trying to make her lower her voice due to some odd rumours spreading like wildfire. If she knew Oikawa had been this popular even out of his own school, maybe she should've made herself look even more difficult to recognize. But then she realized something, and her eyes widened-
"You guys were watching..?"
"Of course we were," Sayaka sighed, taking out her mobile device. "Even if we hadn't been there," she opened up a picture which made the 15 year old die a little on the inside. "This photo had been given out faster than anything else... There are so many captions about it, too." Ren quickly deleted the photo off of her friends phone, clearly being embarrassed by the action she pulled off a few days ago. No way- how did they even get that angle of our kiss?
"Oh, what photo are you talking about?" Tsukishima walked over, making all the air in Ren's lungs to disappear completely. "Just this one-" Sayaka explained, before getting her mouth covered by the youngest. "N-nothing!"
"Ah," the blonde smirked, "you mean how you kissed the grand king?" Ren's arms went limp, and she frowned, "if you knew, why ask?"
"Why did you kiss him? Remember he said how he had been joking?" The one labelled 'Tsukki' had snickered, but eventually stopped that when he realized Ren hadn't given any reaction. "Yoshida-san..?"
"I hated it," the girl wore a dark expression. "Oikawa-kun pitied me... I hated it."
"It's only natural... Are you an idiot who makes the same mistakes? Something as ridiculous as that means that you should just refuse-"
"But," Ren interrupted, "you guys were all so sad because of the match." She then smiled, "I couldn't make it seem like I was upset."
"So that's why you ran off like that..!" The most mature of the girls snapped. Ren crossed her arms, "whatever. I'm going to Math class."
"Ehh- you seem like the only one who enjoys it though." Hiyori whined, shortly before stretching her arms. Ren's eye twitched, "let's just go-" she then grabbed the short girl's arm and dragged her to class.
--
Kageyama rushed to the vending machine at his lunch break. It was his usual, and since he didn't really have anywhere to be, it seemed like he had all the time in the world. "Hey, Tsukki." But even he knew that voice. It had been one that he never bothered with, since it was none of his business.
"I never did t-tell you."
"About what?"
"I um-" Kageyama was supposed to be gone by now, but why was he so curious? "I think I like Yoshida-san." No way, Kageyama's eyes widened. Why did this seem so bad to him?
Oh, that's right. She likes Yamaguchi's best friend. "I know."
"Eh, how'd you know?!"
"I think someone has to be pretty damn stupid in order to not realize your feelings towards her. Well, other than herself." Kageyama flinched. He didn't know that. "So, what about it?"
"I don't know... I-I, um, I want to tell her how I feel..." Kageyama couldn't believe what he was hearing. This'll end up bad, and even someone like him knew that. "Then confess."
"So, you don't think it's a bad idea?"
"Why would I think so?" Kageyama needed to be somewhere out of sight. So he hid behind a beam. "I just thought that you... may also like her..." But all he could hear now was the sound of Tsukishima's slight laughter.
That was a first. "No. I don't. And now I'm guessing why you'd do something like this."
"Why's that?" Yamaguchi puffed his cheeks, staring at his friend. "You got jealous of the kiss?" No, that wasn't it... He already kissed her- and even if she didn't kiss him back-
Wait, maybe he had been. Only because he doesn't want Oikawa to steal her away. He isn't popular for no reason. Skeptical, the shorter male nodded his head. That's when it got a little silent.
"Then confess," Tsukishima pushed his glasses up as he stood in one place. "Knowing Yoshida, she wouldn't turn you down."
Kageyama shook his head, exactly why I have to tell Yoshida. Kageyama started to walk, maybe that way, she can avoid the situation.
But for how long-?
That was until his left arm had been grabbed, seizing his from moving forward. Turning around, he met face to face with no one other than a concerned Yamaguchi. "You heard... right?" The ravenette didn't say a word, except for looking downwards. "So you did hear..."
Tsukishima didn't say anything. The setter of the team nodded slightly, making the shortest let go. "I beg of you, Kageyama-san." Yamaguchi then bowed, "please don't say anything to Yoshida-san!"
--
A familiar male pulled Ren to the side. After all, it'd still been lunch. "Kageyama..?" No words spoken from him, he dragged her outside the classroom. "H-hey, what's wrong?"
"We're going to the rooftop- we need to talk." Upon arriving, Kageyama made sure there had been no one besides them two. "So... What did you need to talk about?" Ren asked, a little hesitation lingered in her tone. This was the first time ever she had seen him act this way.
"I need you to stop liking Tsukishima."
"...What?" Ren raised an eyebrow, more confused than before. Giving a small smile, "I wish it was that easy, but I guess you don't understand-"
"No, you don't understand!" He raised his voice, a little to Ren's disliking. How do I tell her without getting Yamaguchi involved? How can I make this a win-win situation? "What..?" Ren had her eyes expand, and she had a very worried look on her face.
"I mean, it won't work out," he then shrugged. "This one sided love will just end with you getting hurt." Ren scrunched up her nose. Since when did Kageyama act like this? Since when did he act so unsupportive?
"Why..? Why do you say so?" Ren knew, more than anyone, that she probably had the worst chance. Kageyama meant no harm. His lack of social interaction causes him to put things in the weirdest ways possible. He sweatdropped, "b-because he's a jerk- why else not?
"He's supremely dense and that may be the reason why he never acknowledges your feelings!" Silence then covered the situation. Did that do it? He thought, breathing a little heavier than usual. "I know that..."
Kageyama then looked at her. "I think I know that the most, Kageyama!" She had tears in her eyes, making the setter extremely confused. "Why? Why are you like this all of a sudden? Why are you acting so jealous?!" He then froze up, "jealous? I'm not jealous."
"Then why-?"
"I'm doing this for your own good, Yoshida! I'm telling you to stop liking him for your own good!" That's right. He had to prevent her from hurting. If Yamaguchi confesses, she will have to hide her feelings even more. "My own good..?"
She then gritted her teeth, "what do you know about me?! Why are you suddenly acting so pushy? I thought out of everyone, you would understand!"
"I do understand-!"
"No, you don't, and you never will," Ren took one breath, "a King like you would never understand!" She stopped, and he went quiet. "No... I didn't mean that..-"
"So that's how you thought of me all this time?"
"No- that's not what I meant-"
"Whatever. Fine. Do what you want," he looked away, a little hurt. "But don't you ever come back for my advice... Don't come back at all." With that, Kageyama left. She was so dumbfounded. Why was he mad?
Wasn't it the opposite way around? No, she was being selfish. She knew Kageyama came to her to tell her something- but she denied it. She was supposed to be the one to understand.
--
Coming back to school the next day was the worst. Ren kept her distance with Kageyama, since he probably didn't want to see her face. She just wanted to say she's sorry. The second thing... Something she didn't even want to mention.
A rumour spreads around like wildfire. That's what she learned. "Tsukishima and Yoshida are dating", and there's even a picture of the two holding arm in arm. Who would spread such a thing. It's ridiculous, how many people believed it.
How many people it hurt. Hiyori stopped talking to her, and she expected that. But at least let her explain. She was going to tell her- since she cared about her a lot. Sayaka rolled her eyes every time she saw Ren, which made her feel useless.
At least she has Yamaguchi and Tsukishima. No? That's right, she didn't get to explain. Yamaguchi ran every time he saw her, and wouldn't allow her to speak to him. Just what did the rumours twist into?
Tsukishima yelled at her. For the first time ever. He told her to stay away. To never speak to them again. But in reality, he was just upset that his best friend was so hurt, and that Ren had dragged him in it as well.
Yes, Ren was blamed for spreading this rumour. Of course, she didn't, but she was blamed for going around and telling people that she had been an item with this blonde. No one thought rationally. The duo knew she hadn't been that type of person, but it was the beginning, and they had all right to be hurt.
Who could spread something as such..? Then one person came into mind, and that was Kageyama Tobio. It makes sense. To get back at her, he used her own secret against her. But she left classes as soon as this happened.
Before she could confront Kageyama. And before Hinata could ask her about the rumour. Volleyball practice came along, and coach Ukai had asked the team where she had been. Naturally, no one said anything. Not even Yamaguchi or Tsukishima.
At times like this, Kageyama would say something. But he just looked angry. Sighing, Ukai decided to skip practice and to visit her. Why not? She was partially the reason they did so well.
Being forced along, the three didn't want to be there. Why did they even show up today? When the adviser asked, they didn't even glance at eachother. Knocking the door and ringing the bell of her apartment, Ukai realized that she may really be sick like Daichi had said. Tanaka and Nishinoya tried to keep the mood high, but the aura of the three ruined it.
"Why don't we call her?" Ennoshita suggested, and Kiyoko nodded. Calling, a small tone and vibration was heard, meaning her phone was close to the door. All of of a sudden, something fell and smashed, and the ringing was halted. Kiyoko pulled the phone away from her ear, and shook her head.
"Something isn't right.." Takeda hesitated, making eye contact with the coach. "What do you mean-?" Hinata asked, and Daichi tried to calm them down. Ukai started to knock the door and call her name, but there was no answer.
He also tried opening the door, but it was locked. "Damn, there's no use..!"
"The key..." Yamaguchi spoke out quietly. The team looked at him, frantic. "There's a spare k-key at the top of her door." Rushing, the coach grabbed it and unlocked the door as quickly as possible. This seemed all too repetitive for Yamaguchi.
They opened the door, and stopped. That was until everyone felt their hearts drop into their stomachs. "Yoshida!" The second oldest yelled, running inside. The rest of the team stood at the doorway.
There she was, asleep on the table with her head down. Only, she wasn't asleep. Sensei yelled to the bunch to call the ambulance, and everything seemed so... fictional. Hinata walked in, a little dead, and picked up her shattered phone. Yamaguchi was almost sure his heart stopped beating.
He started to sob before he knew it, constantly apologizing. Tsukishima walked in slowly and quiet. More quiet than usual. Kageyama stood still at the doorway, the only one left for everyone already ran inside.
Kinoshita and Narita decided to get help from around. Anyone would do. Kiyoko tried to stay calm, but seeing Sugawara in such a panicked state made her tear up. Daichi got angry, but right after he was devastated. Hinata called out Ren's name repeatedly, but there was no answer.
Kageyama blamed it on himself, but stayed silent. Yesterday, if he didn't say anything. If he didn't get so angry... would she still be okay? Tsukishima noticed a familiar bottle on the table, and quickly ran to it. Don't tell me-
He picked it up, and like he expected, it was empty. Why did he feel so... worthless? Why did he feel empty? "What happened? What freaking happened?!" Nishinoya yelled, getting frustrated.
Tanaka just cried quietly, and Asahi seemed like the only person who had kept his calm.
--
"I did it," another female walked in. "It's all my fault." She was crying, so much she could barely speak. Everyone locked their eyes on her. They had been waiting at the hospital, to see what the doctor could say.
She then explained. Sayaka Chiyu, the girl who had been friends with Ren for a long time now, walked in with Hiyori. She told Ren to disappear. Sayaka told Ren that the world would be better without a person like her. She admitted to it.
Sayaka spread the rumours. She wanted Ren on Hiyori's bad side. She didn't know she would try and commit suicide. She didn't know. This was the first time Hiyori hated Sayaka this way.
Hiyori felt dumb for believing it. Why did she say those things to Ren? Why didn't Ren say that she was hurting so much? Hiyori slapped Sayaka across the face, and she ran out of the hospital. Sayaka bowed down, apologizing entirely.
She regrets what she has done. It was supposed to be a lie. She didn't know Ren had feelings like that. Nishinoya stepped forward, having clenching his fists. "How dare you come back here." Asahi and Tanaka then held him back.
"Why are you standing up for this b****!! How dare she- how dare she show her face like this!"
"Yu, calm down-"
"How can I when I know that-!"
"Nishinoya, what good will yelling do?!" Asahi snapped him out of his thoughts. This shut him up, but the libero stormed off. Tanaka went after him. Sayaka stayed down, and said sorry again. She, too, ran off into the distance.
That was when Oikawa and Iwaizumi came in. Oikawa, with tears streaming down his face, clenched his phone in his hand. "What happened..?" When no one answered, he started to shout. "And you all call yourselves her friends!? I hate it! I hate you all!!"
He looked towards everyone, and realized that they were sobbing as well. He breathed, "that's it. I'm done. I'm so done." The setter of Seijoh then walked out, and Iwaizumi covered his mouth, since he was slightly crying, too. Kageyama, seeing them in such a state, couldn't help but cry as well. Tsukishima seemed like he had been the only one to keep himself under control.
Oikawa knew. Her suicide was partially his fault. She called him moments before, but he didn't reply. All because of volleyball. Because volleyball takes away the things he loves.
The ravenette knew that Ren probably thought that he had started the rumours. He got mad at her the day before. It was only obvious. But he was heart broken. Ren can die thinking Kageyama betrayed her.
So please, stay alive, Ren. So many people have things to say to you. Being surprised, a male in a doctor's coat walked out. Ukai stood up, but the doctor continued to look downwards. His eyes widened.
Everyone started to bawl their eyes out. Tsukishima Kei, someone who didn't cry often, felt his eyes tear up. They were all being selfish. He was oblivious to her feelings. No, it only seemed that way.
That's when they all knew. A long journey has come to its end.
