Act 38; The stars are nothing compared to you,
Ren's P.O.V:
"Is that all you've got, Tsukishima?" A once familiar dark haired female challenged, riling up the lanky blonde. "You let a girl with an awkward spiking form get passed you? How pathetic. No wonder you need help with your blocking form- it's way too off," Tsuya spat, making me look at senpai in disbelief. Tsuya-senpai was a first year back in my school when I had been in elementary. Aside from that, she played on the junior Volleyball team, which made her look a billion times better than she already was.
I didn't know her reasoning, or why she even joined that team specifically, but I know that she had been someone I looked up to too much. She had been the reason why I had hope in joining that team, as well as trying out in general. 'You'll be fine, Ren! Volleyball is a fun sport- you have to try out when you're older', is what she always said. Over the summer break, Tsuya-senpai just... disappeared. Maybe I had turned out just like her.
Now, she had been taking on the most intimidating person I know. Tsukishima Kei. Someone I couldn't just leave alone and not cheer for. But Tsuya-san is the same. Who knew I'd see her here?
Why would she join Nekoma out of the blue? Where had she been all this time? Even I didn't know that much. All I know is that moments ago, we had been playing a three on one match. Tsukishima-kun didn't do too well, and Tsuya-senpai all up and suddenly decided to start a fight. Kuroo-kun and I stayed quiet.
"Tch, I bet you can't block half of the spikes here," the beanpole smirked, "being so short, that is."
"Do you want to try, blondie?" The third year female crossed her arms, "why don't you spike for me? Cleary I'm too short to block, right?" They both switched spots, as Tsukishima-kun stared at me and I couldn't take my eyes off of his. "Eh?"
"Toss for me- I want to show this fake how hard blocking really is," he pushed his glasses upwards with his dominant hand and stood feet away from the net. No way, I smiled, getting all cheeky, I'm going to toss for Tsukki-kun?? This is the best day of my life! I better make this good-
But that means my siding against Tsuya-senpai... I don't think she would want to cheat, so, I should do my best and make her proud! I grinned, as Tsukishima-kun let out a few words slip by him. "How about we make a deal?"
"Sure," the brunette agreed before hearing the offer. "If you fail to block, I get to ask you to do a dare you cannot turn down. And if you block, you can ask me to do one."
"Deal!" Tsuya-senpai accepted with confidence, making me have a bad feeling about this. "I don't think this is a good idea-" I tried to speak, but gave up when I realized I'd been getting ignored. "Oi, don't get-" Kuroo-kun tried next, but followed the same fate. It was too late; their little showdown had already begun.
Throwing the ball in the air to me, I put my hands in a triangle like form. Not wanting to have Tsukishima-kun win easily, I tossed it where the blonde could hit it easily and where Tsuya-senpai could block it just as effortless. The female jumped first, since the height difference would surely hurt her. Tsukishima-kun then swings his arm downwards, only to feint it over her hands. The sound of them landing followed by the satisfying noise of a win.
"You bastard!" Tsuya-senpai yelled, making me back away from the beanpole and try and stop her from throwing her punches and kicks. "Looks like I win, shortie. Do you want to do the dares now or save your pride and postpone it?"
"Tell me what it is, you asshole! You chickened out and did a feint last second!!" She retorted, causing Tsukishima-kun to snicker in amusement. He started to walk towards her and Kuroo-kun and I could literally do nothing but watch. "Alright, fine. Swallow all your pride and kiss me, or-"
"E-Ehh??!!" The captain and I yelled aloud in sync. I felt my cheeks heat, and my heart race. But the two glared, making us shut up, and have me brush off the weird feeling. "Or successfully fight and pin down one of the coaches? Which one are you going to do?" Tsukishima-kun teased, making Tsuya-senpai stand in shock.
She clenched her teeth and walked up to the male; the only right answer. The brunette then grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him down to eye level. I covered my eyes and turned around, making Kuroo-kun worried about me. When it seemed like senpai was about to curse, the cat-like captain covered my ears. I uncovered my face, and watched as Tsukishima-kun had to undergo extreme pain.
"Ouch," Kuroo-kun and I responded to the middle blocker getting kneed where the sun didn't shine. "I think we're done?" Tsuya-senpai then grabbed my hand, and refused as I tried helping the blonde in any sort of way-
"...da-san?"
"Yoshida-san?"
"Y-yeah?!" I jolted from my seat only to see a blank sheet of paper stuck to my forehead and a view of white. "Go wash your face," the teacher ordered, as I yawned and took the social assignment off of my head. The class laughed, but I didn't care. I just yawned, realizing I had been asleep about half the hour. I didn't get a lot of sleep after the trip yesterday.
Who did? I thought as I looked down at Yamaguchi-san who had been sound asleep on his desk, behind his textbook, and Tsukishima-kun who had his hand over his head and had also been dreaming.
--
"That was too funny," Yamaguchi-san chuckled, looking in my direction as I grinned. "What were the odds I had been the only one to get caught?"
"Sensei always tries to pick on you; especially since it's her classes you always fool around in and still get decent grades." The freckled male smiled as we made our way to the club room, where we would get ready for practice today. "I guess," I sighed, eyeing at Tsukishima-kun, "what did you dream about, Yamaguchi-san?"
"Me?" The shorter male asked, his cheeks blushing as he avoided eye contact with me, "i-it was nothing..."
"Sure it was~" The tall blonde teased, making Yamaguchi-san cringe with his voice. "Anyways," I smirked mischievously, "remember the time you dared Tsuya-senpai to ki-"
"Shut up," his eyebrows met, "I don't want my mood being spoiled with a stupid rumour like that." I raised a brow, "sure it was, blondie~"
--
Coach Ukai-kun gave a ginormous yawn before grabbing the attention of Takeda-sensei and I. "Thank you for all your hard work, Ukai-kun." The adviser praised, a little after, I decided to say something, "lately, you have been coming here every day when club activities start, but, what about your job?"
"Up until now, I've just handled the shop itself, but since I've been harvesting the crops in the early morning, I was told that the shop would be fine until evening," he sighed, "well, there's no point in taking advantage of it, being my folks' place and all-"
"Thank you very much," Takeda-sensei and I bowed in sync, "I'll even bring sake next time!" he added on, making the coach's eyes glitter up, "really?!"
I sighed, looking at the white board he uses for attacks and defense plays, "anyways, there are a lot of attack patterns here, huh." The adviser placed his hand on his chin, "do you plan on using them all?"
"It depends on how things go," the blonde started, "if you only pay attention to what is above, you will be tripped from below.
"Players need to concentrate on the match in front on them, or they will be in trouble. But, even we can't help but be overwhelmed by the matches and games to come." The coach specifically looked at Sugawara-san and Hinata who had been working on a quick. I decided to trot over and watch what they had been doing as well. "Nice, Hinata!"
"That toss had a great feeling to it!" He blurted out, as everyone began to praise the two. Meanwhile, Kageyama had been over with Asahi-san, and had been eager to figure out if he had been doing an okay job. "Azumane-san, how was that toss right now? Was it too high? Too low? What did you think?"
"Ah...Um...Er," he started stuttering a little nervously, "i-it was fine..."
"Tell me whatever it is lacking, no matter how trivial, and I'll fix it!"
"That's... Um... Then I guess it could be a little higher, and a little further away from the net-"
"Got it!"
"Where did Yamaguchi-san go?" I asked, getting a reply from none other than Sugawara-san himself. "He said he needed to go somewhere."
"And Tsukishima-kun?" The platinum blonde smiled, "he left with him, just a few minutes ago."
"Is that so? I'll take my leave then, too!" I grabbed my bag and quickly changed my shoes. "But Daichi said he would treat us to some Nikuman-"
"Sorry, Suga-san," I grinned, "I have something I need to do." And with that, I had exit the gym, and started to sprint in the direction of home. Yamaguchi-san wanted to go some place, which I don't really mind, but he asked me if I had wanted to go with him as well. I never gave him an answer, so I should probably do that now. Aside from that, maybe I needed to bond with him a little more.
As soon as I saw two figures separating in the distance, I started to wave them down. "Oi, Yamaguchi-san, Tsukishima-kun!" They stopped in their tracks and looked at me. I bent over, panting since I ran way too much. Another thing about me is that I don't have that much stamina.
"Yoshida-san?" The freckled male questioned as I stood up and took a deep breath, "I decided I'd come with you."
"Oh, what's this? Did you ask her on a date?" The beanpole cooed, smirking the slightest bit. "N-no, I did not!" Yamaguchi-san's eyebrows met, and I crossed my arms. "Where are you two going anyways?"
"I just have an errand I'd like to finish," the shorter of the two told, as the blonde walked the other way, I tilted my head in confusion. "Why, are you not coming with us?"
"I have better things to do," he replied. As Yamaguchi-san's face turned a red. "Are you sick? A fever maybe? Are we getting medicine-?"
"N-not at all. Let's go, Yoshida-san," the freckled first year beckoned me to follow him, and Tsukishima-kun gave a small smirk before turning to leave. "Bye, Yoshida, Yamaguchi~"
"Bye, Tsukki."
"Oh- see you later, Tsukishima-kun!" I waved bye, as I walked behind the other male. Catching up to him, I couldn't help but try and start a conversation. As awkward as it is, I looked around to try and fix my eyes on an object, before gazing upwards into the sky. "The stars are pretty, aren't they?" I gave a sweet smile, and my statement caused Yamaguchi-san to look up as well. "They're not that pretty," he smiled back, "compared to you."
"What was that?" I tilted my head, as he shook his head back and forth, "n-nothing! I said nothing!" He sighed, and continued to walk forward. "The stars are nothing compared to you," I blurted out, "that's what you said, right?" I saw Yamaguchi-san's eyes widen, "y-yeah..."
"I love that quote!" I beamed, grinning like quite the idiot, "I didn't think anyone else would know it!"
"Th-that's not what I meant," his face turned a slight rose colour and the male stopped in his track, looking at the ground. "What did you mean?" I chuckled, turning around to face him, he took a deep breath. "I... I've wanted to tell you this, b-but..."
"What is it?" My gaze softened, "you do know you can tell me anything?" Yamaguchi-san nodded, "I-I like...I-I really like... For a while now..." He then sighed, looking at me straight in the eyes, clenching his bag strap. He then gave a sort of sad smile, and released his grip from the bag.
"I like looking at the stars with you a lot, Yoshida-san."
