the glass eyeball

Nova's p.o.v:

"We survived on canned food, cockroaches, anything we could find."

"Honestly, it's a miracle we didn't die of food or air poisoning. The air was thick and full of ash of the building remains. Everything was just so...destroyed," I spit out in the same hushed tone as Five.

"And you know that rumor that Twinkies have an eternal shelf life?"

I let out a shudder at the reminder of the terrible taste. "Don't believe it. It wa a lie. All a lie."

"Do you have anything stronger?" Five asks and I nod my head. Everytime I close my eyes, I'm back there. Standing over there bodies, searching for Vanya's and Ben's. So yeah, I have PTSD.

"You think we're insane, don't you?" I question as I sip my drink.

"No! I-it's just a lot to take in. How about we pick this up in the morning? You guys can share the couch if that's ok."

"Yeah it's fine."

"You guys can borrow some pj's if you want."

Nightmare:

Nova opens the front doors to the Umbrella Academy, her thirteen year old body clad in it's usual uniform.  Nova turns as the wood floor creaks behind her as she ventures deeper into her childhood home.

"H-hello?" She turns around again, coming face to face with thirteen old Ben. "Jesus Tentacles, you scared me!"

"Why?"

"W-what?" Nova stutters as she takes a step back.

"Why didn't you save me?" Nova let out a gasp as the rest of her dead siblings appeared. "Why didn't you save us?" Nova made a break for the door, which slammed shut. Both her hands grabbed the door handle, desperately pulling on it, but to no avail.

She let out a shriek as her siblings grabbed her arms, dragging her to their Dad who had a typical scowl on his face. "Put her in the chamber!"

"I'm sorry, I didn't know!" Nova repeditaly yelled as they drag to a dark lit hallway and threw her into a spiked box. The door slammed shut behind her. Suddenly she wasn't at the academy anymore. She was back in the apocalypse future. Bang! A single gunshot. Blood. So much blood.

End Nightmare:

I awoke with a start and look around. Five was fast asleep on the couch across from me. I remove my blanket and make my way to the bathroom. My powers turned the faucet and I splash water onto my face. Both of my hands are gripping the sink like it's about to disappear. I move back a bit and cracks form along the mirror. Ok, Nova, calm down.

"Nightmares again?" Five's tired voice sounds behind me and I nod, not opening my closed eyes. His arms guide me away from the sink as he pulls me into a hug. "You're alright. I promise." His chin rested itself on top of my head. "You're alright."

"How am I supposed to save the world when I can't even go a single night without nightmares?"

"That's what I'm here for. We'll do this just like we've done everything else: together. Do you want to talk about it?"

"No. Let's just go back to sleep. We've got a long day ahead of us. But can I...sleep with you this time?" My face flushes as I question this and he gives a nod. When I awake again my head is rested on his chest while one arm was loosely wrapped around his body. My other arm was oddly sandwiched between my body, Five's and the couch. I blush and get up, quickly getting dressed. I make two cups of coffee and grab two  bagels.

"Hey, wake up. We've got a big day ahead of us." I whisper as I shake an unhappy Five awake. If it had been anyone else waking him, he or she would probably be dead by now. We sit in silence as we sip our coffee and have our bagels. When we were alone, all those years, we would often huddle for warmth by a fire or under loads of blankets when we weren't try to get back home or find food.  So this was nothing new for us.

In no time, we found ourselves at Meritech. I could feel the anticipation rising within me. Forty five years of not knowing who ends the world. That ends today. My right hand was grabbing his left arm as I tried to look less suspicious.

"Umm can I help you two?"

"Um, yes! We found this lost eye and we want to know who it belongs to."

"Where did you get that?"

"We found it. At a playground, actually." I speak up this time, brushing a strand of my platinum blond hair behind my ear.

"It must have just popped out." Five says, making a clicking noise with his tongue. It all goes to shit from there. My hands cover my face as Five threatens the doctor.

"Oh dear," I mutter. "You don't need to call security. We were just leaving."  Once I drag him to the elevator I say "Klaus?"

"Klaus," Five begrudgingly agreed.
