Chapter 20- Talk with Frederick

Alaric looked at Trevor and wanted to laugh, he turned around, placed his hand on the small of her back and walked her out of the room. "Let's leave him be, and figure out what he was up to."

He followed her up the stairs and into the living room. She picked up her book and sat down. "There are so many spells in this book, I've been looking and trying to find the right one, and nothing is jumping out at me." she sighed, as she flipped through the pages.

"What are you wanting to do to him?" Alaric curiously asked.

She shrugged her shoulders "I don't know, I want him to suffer before I kill him, that's for sure." She sat there thinking about what and how she wanted to do it, then had an idea and closed the book. "Take me to see your father... I need to speak with him."

"My father?"

"Yes, please... I need to ask him some things."

Alaric drove Layla over to his parents home, as they walked inside they met with Sebastian "Good evening Sebastian, we're here to see my father, is he around?"

"He should be back soon, he and your mother are out at the moment." he smiled, while looking at Layla. "I can see the love between the two of you, and I must say, I have never seen him look so in love before." he said quietly in her ear.

He stood back up and looked at Alaric "Would you like some tea while you wait for their return?"

"Sure, I would like some." Layla said, she grabbed a hold of Alaric's hand and followed Sebastian into the kitchen. While he made the two tea, Alaric and Layla sat at the table and talked about what was next. He was curious as to what she wanted to talk to his father about, and leaned back in his chair.

"My father is hardheaded, if you're still wanting information from him, you'll most likely be disappointed with the results from him."

"I have to do something, he seems to know a lot about me, and it would be nice to know a few things."

Sebastian set their teas down in front of them, then pulled out a chair to sit. Sebastian was curious as to what was going on with the two and began asking questions. "So, is there going to be a wedding in works?" he asked, grinning ear to ear.

Alaric chuckled and smiled as he looked at who he thought was the most beautiful woman he's ever laid his eyes on "Possibly..."

Layla smiled, and felt her insides flutter. She felt she was so in love with him, and would love nothing more than to be his forever, she looked at Sebastian and softly giggled "The other day I thought he was proposing to me, but of course he wasn't."

He reached his hand out and placed it on top of hers, patting it with a smile "If he ever does propose, you both have my support." he winked. He sat back in his chair after removing his hand from hers, and couldn't help but look and smile at her. Layla noticed that he wouldn't stop looking at her, cleared her throat and looked away from him. There was something about him that was familiar to her, but couldn't place it, and smiled when she looked back at him, nervously twirling some of her hair with her finger "All I can say is that I hope he does, I wouldn't mind being his wife."

Alaric heard the door open and turned his head, he set his tea down and stood up "Sounds like they're here." He felt a little bit of relief when he heard his parents walk in, marriage was a soft spot with him, and even though it had been on his mind, it was something he didn't feel comfortable talking about just yet.

Frederick and Elizabeth walked into the kitchen after hearing voices and were surprised to see Alaric and Layla in the room. "Alaric, what brings you two here?"

"Layla... she wanted me to bring her to you, she has some questions for you if that's alright?"

Frederick looked at Layla, and waved for her to stand up "Come with me, we'll go take a walk and talk." he looked at Alaric and gave him a serious look "You can stay here with your mother."

Frederick walked Layla outside, and started walking her around the flower gardens. He had a feeling what she wanted to know, but was interested in hearing about her, and what she had figured out about herself. "So, tell me, have you been figuring things out about yourself?"

She looked down and twisted her lips as they slowly walked "I have... I have figured out who my mother is, what she was, and how much she was adored by everyone. I have also discovered that I have her traits, and can do exactly what she did."

"That's good, Phoebe was a wonderful person. She was different, she wasn't like all the other witches in town. Most vampires didn't get along with the other witches, but she was one that everyone could deal with."

Layla took a deep breath and exhaled loudly, causing Frederick to look at her "You want to ask me something... what is it?"

"My mother was killed for a reason that was not under her control, if everyone adored her as much as you say they did, why didn't anyone stop her hanging?" she paused, then stopped walking. Frederick stopped and turned around, tilting his head as he sensed what the next question was. "She was killed because of you, why didn't you stop it? Or even fight for her?"

"Why do you say that?"

"Because... I know you're the one who killed Trevor's family, and they assumed it was my mother. You set her up, didn't you?"

He laughed "Oh Layla... I did kill his family, that I did. But, I didn't set her up. I killed them with Alaric's help..."

"What?" she asked wide eyed, cutting him off.

"There was a reason why I killed his family... and it was to protect you."

She furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head, not understanding why he would want to protect her "I don't get it."

Frederick sighed, reached his arm around her, and turned her to continue walking. "My reasonings for killing them at the time, were for a very good reason."

"Explain to me to your reasonings, my mom lost her life because of you." she snapped.

"Do you remember a time playing in the woods, and a man had walked up to you, then walked you over to an open area?"

"A little bit, I had a dream about it not too long ago... all I saw was, he walked me to a field and Trevor came over to me, then my dream went black."

"Trevor's family had it planned to kidnap you, take you in as one of their own, and for you to be Trevor's wife. They made sure the two of you were close, and wanted you two to be inseparable... Which I see their planned worked when you came back to this town."

"Why me?"

"They hated your mother, and hated who they thought was your father. They wanted to take control of this town, and to get rid of everyone that stood in their way... they knew you were special, thought they could turn you to be one of them, and would be the one to help them be the most powerful creatures in the area."

She stopped walking and looked at him confused "I still don't understand why you made sure to kill Trevor's family, and how my mother lost her life because of it."

He sighed, looked away, and closed his eyes. "I'm sorry I was the reasoning behind the killing of your mother. I tried to save her, they wouldn't listen and wanted her gone, especially when she wouldn't disclose your location. She was in their way, and knew she would be able to stop them with their agenda."

Her heart began to beat faster the more he stalled with answering her questions, and with the expression on his face she began feeling sick to her stomach "Oh my God..." she said sounding shocked, pushing her way out of his arms "Tell me you're not my father." She began to shake, started pacing, then bent over as she thought she was about to let out everything she had in her stomach.

He leaned his head back and shook his head "No... I'm not your father... at the time I thought I was, and that's why I did what I did to protect you. It wasn't until recently that I found out you were not mine."

She felt her head spinning, and began feeling light headed. She walked over to a wooden bench and sat down, she didn't know what to think and still felt sick at the thought he could be her father "You slept with my mother?"

He walked over to her and sat down next to her. He knew he better come clean, and hoped he wouldn't say anything that would scare her away from Alaric "I did... I had a long time affair with Phoebe, your mother..." he sighed "I had gone away to Europe with Elizabeth for a couple months, and when I came back I found out she was with child. She never told me who the father was, and I always assumed you were mine. The last time you were here, I saw how you and my son were together, sensed the two of you had gotten pretty close and got worried."

She looked at him with anger in her eyes and wanted to make him pay for what he had done. He saw the anger in her eyes and leaned back "I know what's on your mind, and please... don't even think about doing what you're planning on doing."

"So, if you're not my father, who is?"

He smiled "He's a wonderful man, and one you'll be proud to know."

"Who is it?" she demanded.

"I cannot say, he insisted that he be the one to tell you. But what I can tell you is that he has one big heart and means well... Years ago, I probably would have killed him had I found out he was your father. Seeing you with my son, I'm glad to know that I am not your father."

Frederick and Layla talked for a while, he finally felt relieved to tell her the truth about her, Phoebe, and how he once thought he was her father. Alaric sat in the kitchen talking with Sebastian while Elizabeth stood back and listened. "I'm going to let you two talk, I have some things I need to get done." Elizabeth said, sounding distant.

Alaric thought she sounded off, shrugged it off and looked back at Sebastian "Where's the whiskey, I've had enough tea and need something a little stronger."

Sebastian stood up and headed for the cupboard, he pulled out a bottle of whiskey, a glass, and set them on the counter. "You know, you're a good guy and Layla is a special woman. I haven't seen you two together much, but the little I have, I see how the two of you look at each other and I think it would be wonderful if you asked her to marry you." He poured Alaric a drink and thought to himself what the hell, he grabbed another glass, poured himself a drink and sat down, handing Alaric his drink.

Alaric stared at his drink and smiled "I would love to ask her, but I'm not sure if father would allow it."

Sebastian chuckled "Why not?"

"He always insisted that I look out for her, and to make sure nothing happens to her. But one thing he was always adamant about, was for me not to get too close to her... which I let happen." Alaric sighed. He picked up his glass and took a small sip of the whiskey, set his drink down and rolled the glass in his hands. "If father were to find out, he'll kill me."

Sebastian laughed "I don't think so, he already knows the two of you have been together. I'm not going to lie, he was extremely upset. But after a few drinks, and talking with him for a couple hours, he's calmed down and has accepted it."

"I've disappointed him, he will never accept it... I saw the look in his eye when he came in here, and the tone in his voice wasn't too thrilling."

Sebastian smiled, and poured Alaric some more whiskey "Trust me, he's alright with it."

"Who's alright with what?" Frederick asked as he walked into the kitchen with Layla.

"I was talking with Alaric about his relationship with Layla... and explained that you are OK with them being together." Sebastian said with a smile as he looked at Layla.

Layla walked over to Alaric and leaned into his ear "I'm finished here, and would really like to leave."

Alaric stood up, finished his drink and looked at his father "I guess we're leaving."

On the way home, Alaric could feel she was upset about something and kept looking over at her, trying to read her mind. "Would you like to talk about it?"

"There's nothing to talk about."

"You know I can read your mind, right?"

"Yes..." she said, knowing that he can't right now, since she put up a wall to keep him from reading her mind.

"I'm getting mixed signals." he turned his head towards her, and pointed his finger at her "Nice try, you may have figured out how to block me from reading your mind, but I was still able to gather that you're thinking about who your father is."

"Can we just drop it? I don't feel like talking about it, and it's something you may not want to know either."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means right now I don't feel like talking, I just want to get home, and see Trevor. I have a few choice words for him."

Alaric didn't say another word the rest of the drive home, and tried his best to break through the wall she put up. The harder he tried, the more she could feel him trying and made sure to give him a headache for trying.

"Damn Layla!..." he said loudly, holding the side of his head.

She looked at him and snickered "I told you to quit trying to get into my head. I'm still trying to take in everything that your father told me..." she hesitated and looked out the window. "Do you really want to know what your father told me?"

"Well, of course I do... why wouldn't I?" He pulled up to the house, shut the car off and turned his body to look at her "Does it have something to do with your father?"

"Yes, do you have any idea who he is?"

"No, none at all."

"What if I were to tell you that your father and my mother were having an affair, would you believe me?"

His eyes widened and began to cough, he shook his head and laughed "What? No, absolutely not... did my father tell you that?"

"He did, and it's the truth..."

Hope the chapter was OK, and is understandable, with my pounding headache it was a little hard to think and write, lol... hopefully you still enjoyed it anyway, and will try my best to get you another chapter tomorrow.😊😊😊😊

Let me know if it needs editing and to be more understandable! I'll fix it 😉
