Marry in May (Villanelle)
It is the merry month of May
Happy is the dancers' call
Cast off your woes it's time to play.
Around the pole gay ribbons play
The music has us in it's thrall
It is the merry month of May.
We skip,we hop, embrace the day
For nothing troubles, nought at all
No thought of woe; it's time to play.
And yet you'll hear the olduns say
You shouldn't marry, not at all,
When it's the merry month of May.
Marry in May and rue the day
Though love may have you in its thrall
You'll soon know woe or so they say.
Sad things can happen and appall.
May's not exempt, it's not at all.
It is the merry month of May
But woe they say who marry today.
Married when the year is new, he'll be loving, kind and true. When February birds do mate, you neither wed nor dread your fate. If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know. Marry in April when you can, Joy for Maiden and for Man. Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day. (Folklore).
