Rooftop

Location: Paris, France

Jazara's POV

As I neared the roof I began to think of Greek Fire's Top of the World.(the song is above if you want to listen along :) I knew the view on the roof was gonna be breathtaking and I just wanted to get up there and chill, but I also knew I needed get off of there as quick as possible. The longer I was up there, more of a chance I had of getting caught. As I reached the top I looked down to where I was. I was awfully high up and I needed to make sure that I didn't fall to my death. I grasped onto the latch on the roof as I searched the room below, glad to see no one had caught me. I knew that would be a terribly hard situation to talk myself out of. Focusing back on the intricate panel above me, I quietly moved it aside and swiftly swung my body up into the damp, cold space.  I looked back down once more and as I shut the panel as silently as I could, I was enveloped in almost complete darkness.  I crouched down and scurried towards the small light, hoping that I would catch my ride on time.

I pulled myself up onto the roof as I finished humming Top of the World to myself and dusted myself off.  I took a deep breath of fresh air, only to have it taken away by the beautiful sunrise in front of me. (the picture below is similar to her view on the roof)

"Wow" I said as my lungs began to work again. I walked across the roof while taking in the view.  All I wanted was to stay up here and watch the day go by, or at least the sunrise, but I knew I couldn't.

You'll see plenty more sunrises Jazara, chill I told myself. But you will NEVER see one like this again.  As I approached a skylight, I sighed, leaned against it, and stopped to look for a few more minutes. I loved sunrises - and the new, fresh morning air and the beautiful blending of colors were just part of the reason.  Sunrises symbolized a chance to start again and to put the previous day behind me.

I walked around the corner of the skylight, looked back at the sun one more time, and began heading towards my pickup spot. No sooner than I had taken 10 paces, I spotted a boy near the edge.

"Shit" I whispered under my breath.

I looked at the boy again. He looked slightly taller than me and had curly-ish dark brown hair.  He stood with his hands in his pockets, dark shades over his eyes, his face towards the sun, and a small smile on his plump lips.  The sun reflected on his tanned skin giving him almost some sort of glow.

My breath was taken away for the second time that morning.

There stood a really hot boy who seemed to enjoy the sunrise just as much I did.

It was too good to be true.

"Damn" I whispered again and I quickly clamped my hand over my mouth.  He seemed unfazed by the girl standing a few feet away, staring at him and cursing under her breath.  If he did notice her, he didn't show it.  All I wanted was to go over and enjoy the view with him, but I knew I couldn't.  I needed to get him off the roof before my ride came. But who to be, who to be? I questioned myself. And then it clicked.

I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and yelled, "Sir! May I ask why you are up here? This space is restricted for employees only."

He jumped, surprised by my presence, and turned to face me, flashing a big and pearly white smile. A smile that made me feel so at ease.

"Oh, hello! I didn't see you there. Isn't this just the perfect view?" he asked as he turned back to face the sun.

"Yes, yes it is." I say as I take a step towards him "But, sir, why are you up here?"

"I'm always up here." he responds, making me finally notice his Australian accent that only added to his appeal. Focus Jazara I remind myself.

Next thing I knew, he was laughing, which not only again captured my attention but also made me notice the way he got crinkles around the corners of his now shade-less, dark, chocolate brown, beautiful eyes when he laughed.  I smiled, but then I realized he was laughing at me.

"What is so funny, sir?" I ask.

He smiled again, "Well, you just kinda didn't respond to my questions and I realized you were staring at me."

Shit, he probably thinks I'm some kind of creep now I thought again in my head.

"Well, what did you say?"

"I told you to quit calling me sir, and then I told you that I work here and that I always come up to see the sunrise before I start my shift.  Then I asked who you were." he responded.

"Oh, well I'm the new assistant building manager and I was told to bring everyone inside to help clean up from the show last night because the night crew was under staffed and was unable to get the job done.  But since I heard that this place has one of the most breathtaking views of the city, I thought I would come take a look."

"Oh, well I'm Calum" he said as he took a step forward to shake my hand, forcing me to notice the small tattoo there, "and welcome to the Rooftop."

"Why thank you, I'm Sally." I say and immediately cringe. I shouldn't have used her name.

He softly smiled again, "Nice to meet you Sally."

He turned back to look at the sunrise and I couldn't help but continue to look at his face. How could someone have such a defined jawline and such a cute, squishy face at the same time? And his eyes, don't get me started on his eyes.

I forced myself to turn back to the sunrise. As I stood there with Calum and watched the almost complete sunrise, I felt like I was on top of the world with his presence. I pictured myself feeling invincible, wrapped in his arms atop this roof watching the sunrise together. Ugh Jazara, you sound like some sappy romance novel I thought. Who said life wasn't sappy? the more positive side fought back.

As I continued to watch the sun, I felt that someone was staring at me.

I turned to look at him, "Whatcha lookin' at Calum?"

He blushed and stuttered, "Oh... Um... N-nothing."

I smirked as he looked back towards the sun, even though the show was over. That was then I remembered that I needed to get him off the roof as soon as possible.

I broke the silence, "Well, it was nice to meet you Calum. However, I need you to go downstairs to help the crew finish cleaning up."

"Oh, okay" he said with a look of disappointment as he began walking towards the skylight near the main staircase that lead back into the building.  It almost broke my heart.

He stopped and looked back at me, "Aren't you coming?"

"I'll be down in a second." I responded.

He smiled again, "Okay, I'll see you later then."

I watched him walk around the corner of the skylight and breathed out a breath I didn't even know I was holding. He seemed really nice. I hope to see him again sometime.

I caught a glimpse of the small black helicopter coming to pick me up and covered my ears. Once it landed I jumped in and put on the headset.

"Thanks." I told the pilot as I plugged in my phone, pressed shuffle, and closed my eyes.

As we cut through the sky, American Author's Think About It came on as I drifted to sleep. I didn't realize how tired I was when I was on the Rooftop with Calum.

This wasn't that tough. I'm glad I didn't overthink about it were my last thoughts before my conscious world faded to black.

Calum's POV

I was just getting ready to head down the stairs when I heard a helicopter approaching the Rooftop.  I stopped and peeked around the corner of the skylight, making sure to stay in the shadows.  As it landed, I saw Sally jump into the black helicopter.  My head began to spin as I watched her fly off into the distance.  This couldn't be happening. I leaned against the skylight and took a deep breath.  She was the girl.

Well, she could not be the girl.  Perhaps she really was just the new building manager who was waiting for her helicopter to pick her up to go on some errand and then bring her back here.  Perhaps to her "I'll be down in a second" really means "I'll be down in a few hours."

But why would she fly away in an unmarked helicopter? Unless that beautiful girl, who seemed to enjoy the sunrise just as much as I did, was the one we were looking for. The one that posed a great threat.

Perhaps it was a new helicopter that didn't have any markings yet. Or it wasn't dedicated to only this company.

I sighed. All I wanted was to look back at the sunrise with her by my side and forget all what just happened.  I loved sunrises not only because of the new, fresh morning air and the beautiful blending of colors. They also symbolized a chance to start again and to put the previous day behind me.

But I couldn't forget, and that made my heart beat faster.

And I just let her slip right through my hands.

Wait here. And if she comes back, she is the new building manager. If not, well... she's not I thought to myself as I slid down the side of the skylight so I could sit.

.

I stared at the sky for hours, all while thinking about Sally.

.

As the afternoon rolled around, I got a sinking feeling that she wasn't coming back. She was the girl we were trying to find.

I sighed with frustration, as I got up and dusted off my clothes.

What was I gonna tell Mikey after being gone for hours?

I couldn't tell him that I let her get away.

And just turning her over to Mikey gave me a bad feeling. Especially after what happened last time.

You can't have feelings in this world, Calum I thought.

"Shit." I sad to myself as I began climbing  down the stairs.

It was too late.
