It is very much recommended. I don't say you need to rewrite everything, like real authors do after finishing to write their first draft, though this tactic does the quality good as well, so stop saying that it is too much work.

Like I said in the proof  reading chapter, softwares like Grammarly are your friend, look for a Beta reader or editor. r/Fanfiction is a good starting point.

When you edit, make sure you're awake. Not coffin awake, really awake. It may help to have a big time period between writing and proof reading/editing.

Artists, developers and many others, while working on their projects, tend to become blind for their works flaws. Like a cache of a browser, empty your brain from your writing. Let it rest for a while and look with stranger's eyes on it. Or let a stranger look at it, get an editor.

All in all, read a lot. And I do mean read non-Fanfiction. Real books that got proof read by professionals.  Especially if it isn't your native language.
