Chapter 7
~Haymitch POV~
I watch as Katniss shoots an arrow into the mutts neck. As soon as it's off of her, I sprint over and pick her up.h She stares at me desperately.
"Haym-" She starts.
"No." I say. "You did nothing wrong. I lift her up and run to the small hospital we have in the district.
"Help!" I shout once we're inside. A nurse comes up to us.
"What's wrong?" She asks.
"My wife just got bit in the leg my a wolf!" I yell. The nurse gets a stretcher and takes Effie to a room. I try to follow, but they won't let me go. The nurse says they'll call me with updates.
Once I get home, I realize my pants are covered in blood. I change and plop onto the couch. There's nothing to do, so I just sit, deep into my thoughts. If I had never ran into the woods, this would have never happened!
How will this effect Effie? And the baby? She'd be devastated if we lost it again. Who released those mutts anyways? Paylor did say that she would get rid of all things from the games...
That's it! President Paylor set them into the woods. But why didn't she just kill them? I have to set this straight.
As I'm getting up to call her, the phone rings. I rush over and answer it.
"Hello?" I desperately ask.
"Hi, is this Haymitch Abernathy?" The lady asks.
"Yes." I respond.
"This is doctor Rachel. I would like to inform you that Effie will be transported to the Capitol." She explains.
"Why?" I ask. I know I shouldn't question the doctor, but I really don't care.
"We don't have the materials here to her stable. All we can do is stitch her up, but that won't be enough. But in the Capitol, she can be healed properly." Doctor Rachel says.
"Have you found anything out about the baby?" I question.
"It should be ok. Effie hasn't shown any signs of rabies, but that doesn't mean it won't pop up. If it does, the baby won't have a good chance of survival." She says.
"Alright, thank you for the update." I say.
"You're welcome." She responds. I hang up and sit back down on the couch as I dig my nails into my scalp. I hope everything will be ok.
That's when the thought pops up. I will go to the Capitol, not only to be there for Effie, but to get revenge. I sit and watch TV until I fall asleep.
~The next day~
Once I wake up, I start packing. The train leaves at 10, and I can't miss it. The 1 year anniversary of the hunger games being over is today, so people won't be working much.
Not only do I need clothes, but I need weapons. I grab the knife I used to sleep with and put it in my bag. I don't know what else to bring. Maybe I can convince Katniss to come with her bow.
Once I'm done packing, I head over to her house. Surprisingly, Peeta answers. I actually haven't talked to him in awhile, which is weird, because he's my only friend who's a guy. We'll have to have a night out together once things settle down.
"Hey Haymitch." Peeta says.
"Hey Peeta, is Katniss here?" I ask as I look over his shoulder so I can see the clock on his wall. 8:48. Good. I still got over an hour.
"No, actually. She's at the hob with some extra game. Trying to get some yeast. Why do you have bags?" He questions. I like how he wants to figure everything out immediately, but it can get annoying.
"Effie has to get transported to the Capitol for treatment." I say.
"Why? Is she ok?" He asks. Ugh. I need to find Katniss and get to the train before it leaves.
"Can we talk about this another time?" I ask.
"Oh yeah, sure. I'll see you later." He says as he closes the door. I rush over to the hob and find Katniss.
"Oh, Haymitch! I need to talk to you about something. First of all, how's Effie?" She questions.
"She's being transported to the Capitol. Wanna come with?" I ask.
"Why?" She says.
"I'll talk to you about it on the train, if you come. I need you to." I claim. I don't think I need her to, but I do at the same time.
"Sure, I'll go pack. When does the train leave?" Katniss asks.
"At 10." I say. As she's walking away, I remember the key component.
"Katniss!" I shout out. She darts back around. "Bring your bow." I say. She looks at me confused, but then just walks away.
I walk over to the train station and wait for Katniss. Finally, she shows up. Thankfully, she brought her bow. We get on the train and take our seats. Luckily, there aren't a lot of people on today. And none of them sit near us. Good. No one can hear my plans.
"So, why did you want me to come with you? And why do I need my bow?" Katniss questions.
"I'm going to kill president Paylor." I whisper.
"What? Why?" She asks.
"She was the one who released those mutts. Because of her, Effie is in the hospital. It won't just jeopardize her, but also the baby. And who knows what Effie's reaction will be if we lose another one." I say. Then I turn my head towards the window to watch the trees go by. That usually stops me from crying.
"She never intended for this to happen. She just wanted to get rid of all things involving the games." Katniss explains.
"Then why didn't she just kill them?" I ask her.
"I don't know. But killing her is a last resort. Who knows who would take over for her if she is dead." She says.
"You could." I blurt out.
"I can't. Everyone probably still hates me for killing Coin instead of Snow. Why do you think I lost connection with Johanna, and Beetee, and-" She stops in her tracks.
"What's wrong?" I ask. She puts her hands over her face.
"I was about to say Gale, but I pushed him away before the execution." She states. "But, it doesn't matter. He ruined my life, so I can't forgive him."
We sit in silence until we reach the Capitol. When we're stepping off the train, Katniss grabs my arm and whispers in my ear.
"Remember, killing is a last resort. We are here to get answers, not blood." She says. We check into a hotel first. Before we leave to go to the city square, I slip my knife under my belt. You never know what could happen.
It takes about an hour to walk to the square. Once we get to the gates of the mansion, Katniss tells them we need to speak with Paylor. They open the gates for us. Probably because of Katniss, not me.
Paylor greets us at the door and sits us down in her office.
"So, what did you need to talk about?" She asks. I look at Katniss and she signals me to talk.
"So, we were wondering if you were the one to let the mutts from the games into the wild." I say. My voice is shaking, and I'm questioning myself on whether I'll be a murderer today or not.
"Yes, that was me. Is that all?" She states.
"We were wondering why you didn't just kill the mutts." Katniss says. I put a hand on the handle of my knife.
"I wanted them to be free, like Panem after the rebellion. Why do you want to know?" Paylor questions. My grip gets harder.
"Well, one of them caused Haymitch's wife to be transported to the hospital here." Katniss responds.
"That's very unfortunate." Paylor replies. "I'm sorry that someone got hurt. Obviously, it was not in my control."
"You could have killed them instead of releasing them." I blurt out. "Then none of this would have happened."
"But I didn't, and we just need to move on." She says, walking away. I dart out of my chair and get behind her.
The knife is about to go right in her back, and I'm smiling.
Hey everyone! Long chapter, I just couldn't stop writing. I'll try to not send Effie and Haymitch to the hospital so much. I will update as soon as I can!
