My Path
Grass rustles in the night air. I watch it twirl and twist, while I stand on top of the camp, looking down on everyone. Light shimmers in my eyes, the light of the moon, brought down to earth.
I jump down, and a dark void opens up before me, just outside the camp in the forest beyond. The whole forest is shrouded in darkness. Mist pours out from it like one large, congruent mass. It twists around my feet, and I see a figure, hazy eyes peering at me through the mist.
It smiles, teeth sharp as knives. "Join me, Icepaw... We can be together forever!" I hear Cinderpaw's voice, and then, out of the mist, she appears.
Silentpelt is behind her, his eyes locked on me.
"FOREVER!" It rings in my head as I wake up, breathing in and out slowly but steadily.
Cinderpaw's awake too. I tremble, knowing it was just a dream, but it doesn't make me any less terrified.
Firekit is outside, playing with his littermates. Lionpaw is talking to Bluepaw and Halfpaw.
I ignore them all, ears flat and annoyed. My fur bristles and I swish my tail side to side, placing each footprint deliberately harder than the last. Firekit runs up to me and asks, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
His big eyes tell me that he understands that it's not nothing. I feel a rush of compassion for the young kit, and I lick back his fur. "Don't worry. I'll be fine."
I'm not. The dream is still making my legs shake, tensing my every muscle, chilling me down to my soul. Why? Because it's just so... real. Cinderpaw's watching me, and I feel that maybe it's not a dream after all. What if this is my final reality? Stuck in that endless hell of the Dark Forest, training with Cinderpaw?
"Snap out of it." Mothflight tells me, looking down at me scornfully as I miss another easy catch, the rabbit springing out of my paws like it's jet propelled.
"Mouse dung." I hiss.
She looks concerned, and shows me gently how to correct my crouch, lowering myself until my muscles hurt and I'm spread on the ground like a snake.
Once again, I see a mouse, and I jump for it, and catch. Under my paws, it struggles, and I'm about to finish it off when I think I see two eyes watching me.
Before I know it, the mouse is gone and I'm standing like a scared deer in the middle of the forest.
"Never mind. We can train later. You need to see Volcanoheart." She sighs.
I go and watch Volcanoheart teach Shadowpaw various herbs, especially ones for curing cuts and battle wounds. Even though it's now greenleaf and prey is plentiful, tensions are still too high to be normal.
"Shadowpaw, go get a warrior and collect some herbs. I need to talk to Icepaw." He walks over to me, a worried expression framing his face. "Are you okay?"
"Cinderpaw's training in the Dark Forest and I don't know if I should go with her." I blurt, sobbing from the stress.
"Well, you can't!" He exclaims.
"Why not?"
He says in a deep voice, "You have been chosen by StarClan. Ice... will freeze... the storm of souls." He says, pausing as if he'd forgotten the prophecy lines. My jaw drops and my eyes begin to sparkle as I realize what this means.
A weight is lifted off of me suddenly, and I feel free as a bird. I yowl out across camp in triumph, prompting odd looks.
I know what my path will be now. A prophecy. I'm special. I belong.
