FOUR YEARS LATER

Vicky sighed as he heard the commotion down the hall. Not again! He looked down at Thomas who was focussing on the curved letters laid in front of him. He watched as the little boy mumbled to himself, repeating the words on the cards. When he heard the cursed words coming out the girls mouth, he stalked down the hall.

His footsteps echoed, silencing the two girls. By the time he reached them, they had both stopped arguing, playing a fake smile on their faces, an arm thrown over each other.

He crossed his arms in front of his chest and stared. His eyes scanned over to the short skirt on Katy's leg and then to Leah who was still in her pyjamas.

"You know, ladies, you have twenty minutes to get ready before we go to Gran's. In twenty minutes, I want the both of you showered and dressed." He glanced at Katy who had a bored look on her face. "With actual clothes that cover your body." She stared open mouth at him as Leah giggled. Katy then smacked her sister, earning a satisfaction groan of pain. "And you, young lady," he said turning to Leah. "I want you to hurry up and get dressed. For why you got dressed back into pyjamas after your shower is beyond me. You should have just got dressed straight away. And don't even get me started on how late the both of you have woken up this morning. You guys know you should wake up early and study then do whatever it is you wish and go back to studying." The girls looked down, sighing. "I just want you girls ready in twenty minutes. And for god sake, ladies, there are two other bathrooms in this house."

He walked back down the hall but before he left their sight, he turned back around. "And the both of you owe a pound in the bad word jar. And phones on the kitchen table now please."

Vicky stood his ground until he heard the shuffling of their feet followed with the mumbles of bickering. He turned back around and they shut they mouths. They both walked past him with a groan and he shook his head with a smile.

I love it when they get into trouble!

He cleared his throat and straightened his face. He walked past the two retreating figures. A minute passed and he tilt his head to the right as he listened to the two doors slamming. He shook his head again, but this time with a laugh.

Thomas frowned and looked up at Vicky. "Daddy, what does this one say?" Vicky looked down at the card in front of him. "Is it because?"

He kissed his cheek and listened to Thomas giggle. "That's right, big man. You got it right."

"Daddy, are Katy and Leah in trouble?"

"What makes you say that, kiddo?"

Thomas glanced over at the phones on the edge of the table. He then looked back up at Vicky who was biting back a smile. "Daddy, can I have a apple?"

"An apple, kiddo. But of course you can. Red or green?" Thomas frowned as he thought what to do. Red or green? After two minutes had passed, Vicky laughed and took out one of each colour. "How about I give you half of each and I eat the other half of each?"

"Okay Daddy," Thomas said with a grin. By the time Vicky had put down the plate of cut apples, the girls walked into the kitchen, each with a frown on their face. Vicky glanced over at Leah's outfit and nodded in satisfaction. He then turned over to Katy but stopped at her exposed shoulders and stomach. He frowned and then glanced down at the skinny jeans.

"I don't mind you putting on a crop t-shirt, Kate. You know that I don't. But I would appreciate it if you valued my allowance of that and didn't go around with a low cut one and exposed shoulders. You know the deal- sleeves."

Katy pulled up her strapless crop top before marching away. She returned later with a half sleeved crop top which Vicky approved of.

Leah sat at the end of the table and scoffed down her cold pancakes. While at the other end, Katy splashed the milk into the bowl, splashes landing on some of the cards Thomas had laid out.

"Daddy! Look what Katy did!" Vicky turned around from the kettle and sighed.

"God sake, Kate, clean that mess up now. And how many times do I have to tell you to not do that?" He glanced over at a tearful Thomas, giving him a reassuring smile. "Kiddo, I'll make those cards for you again, yeah? But right now just finish your apples and I'll put all your stuff away."

"Then we go to Granpa house?" he asked with a hopeful smile. Vicky kissed the top of his head.

"Then we go to Granpa's house," he repeated reassuringly.
