Chapter 19
Katy nervously paced across the room, feeling the sweat settle on her hands. She had been up all night, tossing and turning; no matter how bad she wanted to fall asleep, her mind would always wonder to the hanging dress at the back of her door.
"Katy, can you please stop pacing across the floor? I just got new carpets in the other day," Vicky said with a sigh. He momentarily lifted his hand up from Katelynn's foot to put some more oil on his hands. He glanced over at Katelynn's warning stare and sighed again. "Just stop please, it's giving me a headache." Lea walked into view, holding the large bowl of popcorn and went to go and sit beside Thomas who was eagerly waiting for Jerry to make his next move on Tom.
"Angelica, what if he doesn't turn up? Then I'm not going to-"
"Katy, you've been going out with Peterson for the last four months. Pretty sure he ain't going to dump you now when he's going to be expected to bring a beautiful woman through the doors at your prom. Stop wearing out the carpet."
"So when you say it, it's fine then?" Vicky asked Katelynn. She shrugged her shoulders before pulling her feet away. "Give me your feet. I've only been massaging it for a while. Let me carry on and you'll feel better."
"No, I'm pretty sure you have better things to do."
"Angel," he warned.
"You have work to do, honey," she said before kissing his cheek.
"I'm not going to finish off my work until I know you're at ease. Lie down and put your feet up again. I know you're thinking of cooking dinner so don't bother." He pecked her lips and frowned. "I'm here aren't I? Let me take care of you."
Katy glanced over at her father who was now smiling as he watched Katelynn lie down on the sofa. She longed to have a man that was like Vicky. Someone who would do anything for the people he loves.
She smiled at the thought of Peter. He was always spoiling her when he could. She loved the way he would always lift up his glasses with his pinky finger rather than the index like most people did. She was devastated when he broke up with her because she had pushed Katelynn two months ago. He simply let her know that he couldn't be with someone who was cruel.
The doorbell rang which brought Katy out her thoughts. She squealed as she ran to the door. She slowly opened the door and smiled shyly at Peter who stood there with a bright smile on his face.
"You look absolutely stunning, my angel." He stepped forward and pressed his lips against her head. Vicky cleared his throat from behind them and Peter took a step back. "Mr Bane, how are you?" He stuck a hand out but Vicky lifted his hands to show the oil stuck on them. "Right, well I hope you and Angelica are alright. How is the pregnancy now?"
"I'm fine, Peter," Katelynn said as she walked into view. Peter smiled at her and took out a flower from his back. "Oh wow, thank you, Peter." Katy leaned back on the door with a frown.
"That's for always helping out Katy when she needed someone and most importantly, helping her get ready because she looks more beautiful than I can ever imagine. She did mention you made her dress." He glanced over at the frown on Katy's face and smiled. "Don't think I've forgotten about you, my love." He brought his hand forward and presented the bouquet of roses in front of her. "Twelve pink roses for the years you have been my best friend and four red roses for how long I have had the most beautiful woman by my side to call my girlfriend."
"Oh my days," Vicky murmured under his breath. Katelynn elbowed him with a warning glare. "What?" he mumbled back.
"Behave. Or you're sleeping on the sofa." He huffed and glanced back at Katy who pulled Peter into a hug.
"Picture time!" Lea screamed as she walked through the sitting room door.
--
Peter stroked his thumb against Katy's cheek, feeling her lean back further into the wall. He sighed happily before finally leaning in to kiss her.
"I love you, my love," he whispered. Katy smiled as she kissed his again. Even though he had been whispering it to her for the last month, it still sent a load of butterflies in her stomach. "I know we're young," he whispered as he pulled her up from the wall. "But I'm going to give you everything I have. And I know I'm a year older than you and your dad pretty much hates it when I come over but I love you and I really hope we stay together forever."
"I love you too, you idiot," Katy said with a laugh. She wrapped her arms around his neck and smiled. "Shall we go out for a bit? Just a walk outside?"
"That will be lovely." He took a hold of her hand and they both walked out to the reception, picking up a glass of juice before opening the door. "You know, when you used to come to my house all the time when we were younger, I used to beg my mum to let me have a shower first so I can smell nice for you and you won't run away from me."
Katy laughed as she took a seat beside him on on the bench in front of the fountain. "I know, your mum told me when we started dating." He pressed his lips against her head and looked down at her. "You seem quiet today." She rested her head on his shoulder and felt him kiss the top of her head again. "I feel like I slow you down," she whispered.
"What do you mean?"
"Like you have so many other girl in your year, in your college and you can have them. See them everyday, hold them, kiss them. I know loads of people your age are sleeping with each other and I'm sorry I can't give you that, I really am but I'm not ready yet."
"Katy, my love, I don't want sex from you. You know that I don't. We don't need sex to be intimate with each other or show each other how much we love each other because we have other ways. I would never force that upon you and I'm not ready yet as well. I want us to be at a certain stage in our lives, in our relationship and then we will be ready. I don't know when that is but we'll know."
"It's not that. I'm always studying and I-"
"My love," he said with a laugh. "I love that you are and I know it's a bit upsetting that I don't get to speak to you as much but I know how smart you are and how much you want to complete your mother's list so I would never hold you back. I promise. The same way with me, you always understand when I can't message you back with work and college. I love you, Katy. If we had a problem I would address it."
"I love you too, Peter," she whispered. He gently lifted her head up and shrugged off his blazer. "No-"
"You've gotten goosebumps on your skin. I don't want to hear another word. Your dad already dislikes me as it is and I don't want you to start off your summer getting ill."
Katy glanced around the water fountain and sighed. She hoped prom would be wonderful where she would dance all night with the man she loves but it wasn't. It was in a nice hall with crap food and even worse music. Since there were hardly any teachers, the kids had managed to sneak in some alcohol and half of them were either puking up or falling all over the place.
"Can we go for a walk? Around central? This prom kinda sucks."
"I was waiting for you to say that all night," he said with a laugh. "But your feet, babe."
"It's only half six. I saw sports direct just down the road and I'm pretty sure we can make it there. I got my card with me so it should be fine. I need trainers anyways."
"I'm not letting you pay for-"
"I'm paying," she said with a final tone. "I don't mind you buying lunch but I am paying and no buts about it."
"Katy-"
"Stop it. You always say how you love how independent I am and how that makes me strong so just let me pay."
--
Katelynn leaned back into Vicky who had his arms loosely around her. She felt him kiss the back of her head and looked up at him.
"I think you should check on the sauce."
"No. Let it cook for another five minutes. You're always so impatient."
"I am not!" Vicky rolled his eyes as he tightened his arms around her.
"Just relax babe." She leaned back further into him and felt him kiss the top of her head.
"I'm not impatient," she mumbled.
"Whatever you say, honey."
