Chapter 13

Marianne, Vicky's mother, slowly walked up the driveway and sighed when she heard the girls arguing behind her. She turned around and gave then a stern look before opening the front door with Katy's keys.

"Kids, I'm sorry I had to cut off our weekend together but I swear I will take you guys out later on this week. One more week right?"

"Yes. Thank you Grandma!" Katy said as she hugged Marianne. All the kids went into the living room, dropping the bags in the hallway. When Marianne walked in, she smiled at the sight of her son hugging Katelynn close to his chest, both of them asleep. Katy quickly took out her phone and took a picture of them.

"They're goals, Grandma," Leah said.

"Goals?"

"Yeah, goals."

"Alright well you kids go ahead and put your dirty clothes into the wash. I'm going to wake them up." She glanced over at the empty wine bottle and beers on the table. She sighed as she leaned over and started to wake them. Looks like they're going to have hangovers this morning.

"Angel, stop," Vicky groaned. "Five more minutes." Marianne shook her head. He used to do that all the time when he was little.

"Victor, it's your mother."

"Mummy?"

Definitely hungover.

"Yes it's mummy. Wake up, your kids are back." Katelynn stirred awake and blinked her eyes several times. She jumped up when she finally registered Marianne standing over her. "Tell your dear boyfriend that if he doesn't wake up ten I'm going to get some water."

"Vicky, baby," Katelynn murmured into his ear. He smiled softly and wrapped an arm around her waist.

"Go to sleep, Angel. It's still morning."

"Vicky, you have to go to work. If you don't get up in three seconds then I will get some water and pour it over you."

"No fair," he grumbled. He turned around, facing his back to her.

"Three!"

"No."

"Two!"

"Five more minutes!"

"One!"

"Mummy, help me!"

"Katy, get me a glass of water for your dad!"

"Mummy," he whined.

"You're in the hands of the woman you love. I have no say anymore." She turned to Katelynn with a smile. "Listen, I gotta go. I'm sorry I cut the weekend off. I was meant to give you two time alone and-"

"It's okay, Marianne." After saying goodbye, Marianne left the house and drove away. "Vicky," she whined when she realised he had fallen asleep. Not knowing what else to do, she picked up the blanket and got back in beside him. He turned around and pulled her into his chest. "I love you," she whispered.

"I love you too, Angel," he whispered into her neck.

The kids came back in and sat around them. She made no effort to get up and stayed in Vicky's arms. "Did you guys have fun?"

"We went to the water fountain," Thomas said with a smile.

"Did you make a wish?" He eagerly nodded his head but before he could say anything, Leah put a hand over his mouth.

"Remember, if you say what you wished for, then it doesn't come true." Thomas' eyes widened in horror and he imitated zipping his mouth. "We didn't really do much but it was fun just spending time at Grandma's."

Katy looked up from her phone and smiled. "How did the date go?"

Katelynn ignored the throbbing pain in her head as she laughed. "It was amazing," she whispered. "Your dad planned for us to go to this fancy place and everything but as soon as we went in, we felt out of place so we went." Katy gasped. "He got a little upset but I insisted we go to McDonalds instead."

"Wait!" Leah said. "You waited eight months for a date with my dad and you let him take you to a fast food restaurant? What were you thinking?"

"He didn't want to. I wanted to. And plus, I was craving the nuggets so I saw my chance. But then we went for a walk around the place, literally just around the whole road which took about an hour because we walked really slow and stopped to speak. There was this big bridge that overlooked some of the city and took our time walking over." Leah smiled softly at her and leaned in closer. Katy did the same. It amazed her at how different they were yet similar. "Then we went back to the car and just drove. We didn't know where we were going but we went. Ended up driving into central so again, we walked. Luckily, I left my gym bag in your dad's car so I changed into my trainers. Most of the time we just walked in silence, holding hands."

"Is that it?" Thomas asked.

"No, baby it's not," she said with a laugh. "Then I saw an ice skating rink and we went into the building. Your dad was absolutely terrified! I had to hold his hand and go around the rink and then towards the end he got it but stumbled a few times after. Then we ate in a little cute diner that was perfect. They had the perfect lighting, the perfect songs and the food was amazing. Then when we came home, we were acting like little kids. He tried this couple yoga thing that didn't really work out. Then at the end, your dad put on a song and we had our first dance." Katelynn sighed as he turned her head to look at Vicky. "Your dad is amazing and I couldn't have asked for a better person to fall in love with." She then turned to the kids. "And you kids are absolutely fantastic. All three of you have a big heart and your parents would have been so proud of you, you know that don't you? They would be so proud of who you are today and who you have become," she whispered. She saw the tears brim Katy's eyes and stood. "Come here, sweety," she mumbled as she wrapped an arm around her. She snapped her head to Leah when she heard her sniff. "Leah, come here." Leah slowly walked over, wiping away her tears with the sleeves of her jumper. "Listen to me, no matter what happens and no matter what anyone says, always know that your mum and dad are going to be overlooking you and guiding you. Know that they are always here and will forever remain in your hearts."

"I miss them," Katy cried as she sobbed. In the background, Katelynn could hear Vicky starting to wake up. She pulled back from the girls and smiled softly.

"How about sometime during the week we go and visit them, okay? Would you like that?" Both girls nodded their heads and wiped away their tears. "Now, how about you go upstairs, get changed into pyjamas and the five of us can just turn the sofa into bed and we watch movies all day long?"

"Thank you," both of them said at the same time. Each of them smiled and hugged Katelynn again. She kissed the top of their heads before sending them away. When she turned around, she found Vicky staring her.

"Are they okay? I was going to get up but saw you already handled it so I knew they were in good hands." Katelynn sighed as she got back onto the sofa with him. He kissed her cheek and pulled the blanket over her.

"I told them their parents would be proud of them and they started crying. They missed them." She sighed again and looked at him. "I told them we could go and see them sometime this week. Is that okay?" Vicky smiled as he stroked the top of her head.

"Of course that's okay, Angel. You don't need to ask me for that."

"It's not fair. Vicky," she murmured into his chest. His head rested on hers. "They're just little kids."

"I know baby, I know."

"I need to go to the toilet." Vicky loosened his arms around her but laughed when she made no effort to get up. "In a bit. I want to cuddle some more."

--

"Katy," Leah whispered when she came through her door. Katy looked up from her pile of clothes and smiled softly at her younger sister. "I know that Dad and Angelica haven't been going out that long but do you think they will get married?"

"I think so. It would make sense wouldn't it?" Katy picked up a new set of pyjamas she had and put it on her bed. "Why, what's up?"

"That makes her our step-mum, you know that right?" Katy stopped in her tracks and looked at her sister. She frowned and stuffed the clothes back into her wardrobe. Leah sighed. "I want her to be our mum," she whispered softly. "I love her and I know she loves us back and I want her to be our mum," she said more boldly. "She's not even trying to replace Mum and Dad because she keeps reminding us of them and we talk about them with her and I want a mum, Katy. I want to be able to say I have both parents. I want to say I have a mum who is here and that loves me. I want to be able to go to her when I have a problem and just have fun with. And I have that with Angelica. She's perfect for us. She fits right in and I see the way Dad looks at her and she looks at us the same way he looks at us."

Katy shrugged her shoulder as she lifted her top, quickly slipping on her new one. She sighed in comfort at the soft material. "I never said anything against her being our mum," Katy said with a smile.

Katelynn giggled when she felt Vicky's fingers at her waist. She glanced in the mirror and smiled at him. He smiled back and wrapped his arms around her. "I love you," she heard him whisper.

"I love you too. When shall we tell the kids that I'm officially moving in?"

"We can do it now if you like. Or maybe, we should see what they do if we tell them you're going back home."

"Oh you're evil," Katelynn said with a laugh. "They're your kids, how could you do that?" Vicky grinned as he ran a hand through her open hair. He was thankful that she just brushed it because he was certain his fingers would have got stuck in her tangled hair. He brushed his lips against hers but made sure he didn't lean in further.

"They're not mine any more. They're ours."

"Oh really? This should be fun. I'll turn them all against you."

"How on earth did I manage to fall for you, Angel? You're beyond crazy." He leaned in to kiss but that was cut short when he heard a loud knock on the door. Katelynn slipped on her t-shirt and went to open the door. "I bet its Katy with that obnoxious knowing," Vicky said without looking at the door.

Katy gasped and marched into the room. "My knocking is not obnoxious! Your knocking is obnoxious. Mine is nice and soft. Ladylike."

"If that lady is a big grown man then-"

"Angelica!" Katelynn shook her head with a laugh before slapping the side of Vicky's head. He playfully glared at her before picking out his t-shirt. He lifted his arms and began pulling his t-shirt over when he suddenly groaned in pain.

"Vicky? What's wrong?" He tried to move his arms but feared that if he did, the pain would increase. Katelynn slowly pulled down his t-shirt and then carefully brought his arms back to his side. "Did you not take your medicine yet?"

"I haven't been taking it for the last week. I thought I was getting better and-"

"You're fucking kidding me!" Katy slowly backed away, leaving the two adults to argue. "Vicky this is for your back and it's crucial that you keep taking your medicine. The doctor said he would give you the all clear when to stop taking them and he hasn't so you carry on taking them. God, I can't fucking believe you. Are you trying to get worse?"

Vicky slowly took the steps towards her and wrapped his arms around her. "I'm sorry," he murmured against her skin. "Stop screaming, you'll make your hangover worse."

She grumbled and pushed him away. "Shut up. My hangover is not that bad. And I'm okay because I actually take my medication. You're a fucking idiot, Victor." He bit back a laugh at her pout and wrapped his arms around her again. His lips brushed against her neck before leaving a gentle kiss on her shoulder. "Stop. I'm meant to be angry at you."

"You can be angry at me later. Now lets go and watch a movie with our kids." He kissed her shoulder before letting go of her. She went through the drawer and pulled out the bottle of tablets. "Do I have to?" She stuck her hand out and he groaned. "I haven't eaten."

"Then go and munch on a fucking apple before taking them."

"Are you going to keep swearing at me?"

"Are you gonna stop stop taking your medicine? Stop...ah! You know what I mean!" Katelynn sighed when she closed her eyes. Vicky came up behind her and wrapped his arms back around her. His lips pressed firmly against her neck and she exhaled slowly. "I don't want to come home one day and find you in a bad state and having to see you on that hospital bed again. I didn't like it."

Vicky thought back to the time when he was sent crashing to the wet grass, not being able to move any part of his body. He remembered Katelynn rushing over to him, screaming at him to get up and stop pretending. But he wasn't. The swelling on his back prevented any movement in his body for the first two days in hospital and he knew she hated seeing him like that.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I wasn't thinking straight. I'll go and munch on a fucking apple while I order some food for all of us. How does that sound?"

"Depends on what you're ordering," she mumbled as she turned around. Before she could even look up at him, his lips were gently placed over hers.

"Whatever you want. I really am sorry about the whole medicine thing. It's just I thought I was getting better."

"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have overreacted like that. I just don't want to see you like that again and see the kids go through that again. You know I love you right?"

"I do," he whispered. "And I love you for always looking out for me. I love you for always being there for me and the kids and I'm so damn lucky to have you."
