Chapter 10
Katy walked down the hall, phone ready in her hand. Vicky smiled down at a sleeping Katelynn who was cuddled up in his arms. Before they even finished the movie yesterday, Katelynn had fallen asleep on his shoulder so he gently pulled her down on the bed and wrapped an arm around her.
Vicky closed his eyes, burying his head into her neck. Katy slowly opened the door but stopped when she saw her dad holding a sleeping Katelynn in his arms. She felt a smile creep onto her lips as she saw her dad slowly brush away the hair from Katelynn's face with his eyes still closed. He brushed his lips against her neck.
"I love you," he said boldly, loud enough for Katy to get on her video.
"Dad?"
"Hmm?" He had his eyes closed still. Katy knew he was still half asleep.
"Can Leah and I go out with Angelica on Saturday?"
"Yeah, whatever," he mumbled, pulling Katelynn closer to him.
"Thank you!" She stopped recording before rushing out the room. Leah stood outside, waiting eagerly for his answer. "Got it!"
"Why did you even record it?"
"You gotta learn, Le," Katy said as she walked back into her room, Leah closely behind her. "The only way to get Dad to agree to something is to go to him when he is half asleep. And don't forget to video tape for proof." She then turned to Leah. "Angelica was in the room. Dad told her he loves her but she was asleep."
"She was clothed wasn't she?" Katy widened her eyes before throwing a cushion at her. "What? Just asking!"
"Ew, that just gross, Leah! No! She was fully clothed- thank God. But Dad loves her! That's so cute."
"As long as you're not upset." Leah jumped onto Katy's bed. "You kind of hated her before."
Katy shrugged her shoulders and glanced down to her phone that had a lock screen of her, Leah and Katelynn. "I think she actually cares about us- hope so anyways. I'm just happy for Dad. He put so much on hold for us and I think I finally accepted that we have to share him. I've seen how upset he was over the last week and I knew it was just because he didn't have Angelica."
"So if Dad came up to us and told us he was dating her, would you be okay?"
"Yes."
--
Katelynn groaned as she put a hand on top of Vicky's that was around her waist. She felt him tighten his arms around her and smiled. Her back was now pressed against his chest.
"Morning," he whispered in her ear. Katelynn giggled as she felt his hot breath tickle the back of her ear. "I see I found your spot," he said with a chuckle before kissing the spot behind her ear. Katelynn giggled before turning around to face him. "I could get used to seeing you every morning."
"I don't think you'll like it very much when you see my hair all messy or when I have a hangover."
He smiled at her before kissing the top of her head. I love you and everything about you. He rested his hand on her hip, slipping his thumb under the hem of her t-shirt. His thumb gently rubbed back and forth against her skin as he kissed her shoulder.
"I'm going to tell the kids today," he whispered. At the mention of her kids, Katelynn sat up on the bed. She picked up Vicky's phone on the drawer beside the bed and then quickly jumped up from the bed.
"Shit, forgot about the kids. I need to get them to school and make them breakfast and-"
"Baby," Vicky whined. "Are you sure you can't lie down and cuddle for a little bit longer?" Katelynn laughed as she saw the pout on his lips. She quickly leaned over and kiss his cheek.
"I have to go. You should get ready for work."
"I don't want to go to work today. How about we spend the day together?"
She frowned as Vicky pulled Katelynn onto his chest. He brushed his thumb against her cheek with a smile on his face. "Why couldn't you come up with that idea before? I already made plans with my sister. She has an appointment with the hospital today about the baby so I'm going with her because Nathan has to go to this important meeting." She kissed his cheek again when she saw him frown. "You're going to work. Get up and get dressed."
"Yes mum!"
"Fucking idiot," Katelynn mumbled under her breath. Vicky chuckled as she stood up and walked to the door. "I'll see you later, Victor."
"Shut it. That's a pound, by the way."
"Shut up, Vicky," she said with a laugh as she opened the door, closing it behind her. Vicky smiled at the closed door.
"I love you," he said out loud.
--
Katelynn rushed down the stairs, only to find all three children sitting down on the table, all with a bowl of cereal in front of them.
"Urm..."
"Why you upstairs, Angel?" Thomas asked. He slurped from his bowl as Katy and Leah smirked.
"I just...I..." She cleared her throat. "I had to talk to your dad about tomorrow. And I guess I lost track of time." She shuffled on her feet. "I'm just gonna be right back. I'll just go and get ready."
When she had finished getting ready, she zipped up her jacket and pulled her hair into a low pony tail. Just as she was about to lean down and get her trainers, she felt two hands on her waist. She jumped up and turned around to face a laughing Vicky.
"What the hell was that for?! You scared me to death."
"I missed you," he whispered. She felt his lips on her cheek as he laughed. "Are you sure you can't find a way to get out of meeting your sister?"
"No. And you're gonna be a grown man and go to work." Vicky wrinkled his nose before setting his hands firmly on her waist. He then leaned down and met her lips.
"Yeah, I missed those lips of yours," he mumble against her temple. Katelynn laughed as she pushed him away. "Just one more," he whispered before kissing her again. "I'll see you after work, babe."
"You could have said that there."
"Yeah but I couldn't have kissed you in front of the kids." He kissed her once again, moving his hands to the back of her neck. "You got me addicted to them already."
"When I met you I just thought the whole over dramatic thing was alright but the more I know you the worse it gets."
"Shut it, you love it really."
Katelynn rolled her eyes and picked up her trainers before walking through the garage. She heard Vicky close her door and before she knew it, she was being turned around by Vicky.
"I wanted to tell you that I'm going to talk to the kids today." He stroked her cheek with a soft smile. "About us." His smile turned into a nervous one and Katelynn lifted his hand up and kissed the inside of his wrist.
"I'm sure it's going to be okay. Whatever is best for the kids, that's what we'll do."
"I don't want us to stop," he said with fear in his eyes. "I don't want to wake up and know that when I open my eyes you won't be there. I want to be able to greet you in the morning with a kiss because dammit, Angel, you make me so happy."
"And you make me happy," she whispered softly. "If I could force the kids to deal with us then I would have from the beginning but we can't do that. You're a father first and I know that. You warned me from the start and I accepted it from the start. Your children come first."
"Angelica!" Katy called. Katelynn quickly stepped away from Vicky and walked down the hall and into the kitchen. "It's almost seven thirty, we have to go otherwise the club is going to start without me."
All three children had joined a morning club. Katy for debate team, Leah for chess club and Thomas for art class. They all started at eight and ran for an hour, ending just in time for their first lesson.
Vicky walked into the kitchen with a frown. He slowly walked past Katelynn who was ushering the kids to put on their jackets and get their bags. She then turned to him and gave him a small smile.
Once all the kids were out the door, he leaned down and kissed the top of her head, letting his lips linger for a few seconds. "I'll call you at break and see if you're free. If not, then I still get to listen to your beautiful voice, don't I?" he said with a smile. "I'll see you later, babe."
--
Katelynn rummaged through her bag, searching for her phone. Once she found it, she jumped up from her seat and walked out the room.
"Hello?"
"Hi! Is this Katelynn speaking?"
"Yes. Is anything wrong?"
She looked down at the screen, feeling the worry set in when she reread the contact name. School. "I was just wondering if you could come and pick up Katy from school. She's thrown up twice over the last hour and has come down with a really high fever."
Katelynn walked back into the room where her sister was lying down on the bed, her new born baby already in her arms.
After Katelynn had dropped the kids off to school, she got a call from Nathan saying how the baby had already arrived after performing an emergency C-section. They had both been in a rush that none of them picked up their phones and he only managed to call after he found her number under a contact from Melisa's file. She had only spent an hour there until the school called.
"Mel, Nathe, listen guys, I gotta go. Katy's fallen sick and I need to go and pick her up. Let me know if anything happens, okay? And let me know if I should look after Lucas tonight." After kissing them both of the cheek, she stroked the baby's cheek and rushed out.
--
Katy groaned as she felt a sharp pain throughout the back of her head. Katelynn jolted awake and calmed her down by stroking her head. Soon, Katy had settled back into sleep. Her phone rang and she leaned over Katy and reached the top of the table. It was Vicky.
"Hey, babe," he said, sounding tired.
"Hey."
"How is she?" Katelynn glanced down at Katy who had a frown on her face.
"Getting worse. She hasn't thrown up again which is a good thing. It's almost four now so she's just fallen asleep. I've been constantly keeping an eyes on her because she kept on saying she was sick but said she wasn't feeling sick anymore about two hours ago. Keeping her medicine up so I hope it should let tomorrow be easier. Trying to make her sweat out the fever now and she won't let me go. Sung her a lullaby."
"A lullaby?"
"More of a Christmas song but it's still a lullaby. My mum used to sing it to me all the time."
A minute passed in silence. "How are you?"
"What do you mean?" She looked down at Katy before closing her eyes.
"How are you? I asked how Katy was and now I'm asking how you are."
"Tired," she said with a laugh. "And hungry. But I can't let her go. Every time I move, she starts waking up and it took forever to get her to sleep."
Vicky sighed as he pulled up into the school car park. He stuck his hand out and waved at Leah who was standing by the lamp post with Thomas. They both ran to the car, racing to the front seat. Thomas won. Leah let him.
"Okay well I'll be home soon- just picked up Le and Tom. Do you want anything to eat? Anything I should pick up?"
"It's okay. You might want to pick up some migraine pills though. For Katy. And whilst you're there, can you do me a favour and get me something?" Katelynn blushed, even though he wasn't there. He hummed in response and she picked at the broken skin on her left hand. "Can you get some pads for me please? I was gonna get them yesterday but I lost track of time and today- I've been busy-"
"The long ones or medium ones? Or do you want like a specific brand? Always? Body form? What else is there?" Leah giggled from the back and Vicky shook his head. He would be surprised if he didn't know anything by the amount of times the girls had him running to the shop, chucking in packets of pads into a basket.
"Vicky..." Katelynn warned. He let go of the laugh he was holding in. "Forget it, I'll just-"
"No, I'm kidding, Angel. Of course I will get it for you. Just let me know which ones and I'll deliver them to you, first class."
"Fucking idiot," she muttered as she felt her cheeks burn even more.
"You're lucky the kids can't hear you. Anyways, anything else I can get for you m'lady? Any certain cravings you wish for?"
"You're taking the piss aren't you?" Vicky chuckled as he pulled into the Tesco car park.
"Just a little. Hang on." He turned round to Leah who was already watching him with a smirk. "You want anything? Or do you want to come with me?"
"Can you just get me a packet of skittles please?"
"Small packet."
"Dad!"
"Or nothing." She groaned and slouched into the seat. "Anything else?"
"Pistachios," she mumbled.
"Thomas, you want anything?"
"Can I have Ribena please, Daddy?"
"I'll be back in five minutes, tops. I'm leaving the keys with you, Le. Don't do anything stupid like last time."
Leah rolled her eyes, earning a warning look from Vicky. "It was one time."
"It was one time," he mimicked.
--
Vicky slowly opened the door, glancing over at a sleeping Katy and Katelynn. With a small smile, he walked up to the bed and pressed his lips against Katy's forehead, frowning when he realised how warm her skin was.
"Victor," Katelynn groaned as she slowly sat up. Katy clung to her hips, murmuring in her sleep. "I'd get up but..."
"That's okay, Angel. I left your pads in Leah's room but I got you some snacks to munch on. I figured she wouldn't have let you go because once she gets ill then she sticks to one person." He slowly leaned down over Katy and pressed his lips against Katelynn's. "I missed you," he whispered, stroking her cheek.
"I missed you too," she whispered back. She glanced over his face, noticing his eyes were slightly droopy. That always happened when he was tired. "You should get some sleep." He shook his head and walked around the bed before sliding in beside her.
"You haven't eaten at all today have you?" He tipped the bag over, watching as it's contents landed in front of his folded legs.
Katelynn scanned over the food and went straight for the chicken mayo baguette. "Thank you," she said before kissing his cheek.
"And the pills for Kate. Got a few packets of crisps and chocolate. I didn't know what kind of food you crave so I pretty much just got what I could get my hands on." She saw the light tint on his cheeks. The next words came rambled out and she strained to understand it. "I mean I got different kinds of chocolates as well. Dark, white and milk. And I got chocolate with fruit and nuts or just nuts by itself. Or the orange one and the mint one. I even got pretzels because Kate sometimes likes salty things. And I-"
"Victor," she softly whispered. He snapped his head towards her, his blush glowing brighter. "Breathe. And thank you so much, you didn't have to get all of that."
"But I didn't want you to be craving something and not have it in the house. Just tell me what it is that you like when you're on and I'll remember and always have it here for you."
"You do realise that the amount of food you have now can last for the next three times I get my period?"
He shrugged his shoulders before kissing her. "Then I'll go and buy two more loads of this so I can keep you here for longer." He kissed the top of her head with a smile. "Eat now." Just as Katelynn was going to move, Katy stirred and lifted her head up.
"Hope you two kept it PG," she murmured when she sat up. Vicky laughed as he watched Katelynn blush bright red. "No point of hiding it, all of us know." She turned around and picked up a packet of almonds. "Thanks." She then kissed Katelynn's cheek before wrapping her arms around her waist. "Thank you, Angelica."
Katelynn kissed the top of Katy's head, brushing the hair back. "It's okay, sweety. Are you feeling better? Feeling sick again?"
"I'm good. Just got a headache."
Before Katy could lift up the blanket, Vicky crawled over to her side. "Katy." He sat down on the floor beside her. "Baby you need to tell me if you feel uncomfortable about me seeing Angelica. If you kids don't want us together then we will break it off." He felt Katelynn look at him but kept his eyes focused on Katy.
"You'd really do that?"
He opened his mouth to speak but heard Katelynn's voice before him. "Of course he would. Your dad loves you kids so much and if you're not happy with us being together then we won't. He wouldn't want to do something to make you upset." Katelynn climbed off the bed, slowly making her way to the door. She saw Katy glance over at her and Katelynn felt as though she would say no. So before she could hear her response, she quietly opened the door and walked out.
"I think she's upset," Katy whispered.
"It doesn't matter right now. I just-"
"Did you mean it?" Vicky raised an eyebrow. "Did you mean what you said to her when I stepped into the room?"
"Kate, I don't know what you're talking about."
"When you said you love her." Vicky widened his eyes as he stared at his daughter. She simply opened her packet of almonds and put a few into her mouth.
"I don't know when this was, Kate- but yes," he finally said. "I know it seems silly because it's only been three months but I love Angel with all my heart. She's the first woman that I feel like I can be myself around and she makes me really happy."
"Then act like you love her then." Katy rolled her eyes when she saw the lost look in her father's eyes. "You're putting her last. You're willing to just throw her away because we wouldn't like her. The way you said you would stop seeing her flowed out so quick that she was shocked. It came out too easy. Daddy, I know I'm a spoilt brat but you shouldn't let me come in between you both. Not if you love her and not if she is the woman that you see in your future." She stopped to drink some water. "And you put a lot on hold for us, sacrificed your whole life for children who aren't even yours and-"
"Don't you dare say that, Katy," Vicky whispered as he sat down on the bed. "You three are my children and no matter what anyone says, nothing will change that. I see you guys as my own and I wouldn't see any different. I love all three of you equally and I hope that we can all stay together for the rest of our lives. I don't know what I would do without you guys."
"Get more sleep and save more money," Katy said with a laugh. Vicky gave her a small smile before pulling her into a hug. "Daddy! You're squashing me."
"Sorry," he whispered when he pulled away. "I'm going to be right back. Just got a certain person I need to see."
"Go and get your woman, Dad."
