Chapter Nineteen - Memories Hurt
The Doctor's POV
Anya had gone to her room to lie down for a while so I stayed in the console room wondering what to do with myself. I am too impatient. There was a white flash behind me and a man stood there smiling. "How did you get onto my ship?" I asked.
"Oh Doctor, you'll find out soon enough. For now I need help and help I will get. Goodnight." Something hard hit the back of my head and I blacked out.
I woke up in the library confused. Wasn't I just in the console room? I remembered someone showing up in the TARDIS then being hit on the head. I was in the console room. That meant that they wanted to hide me from someone. Anya! I ran to her room and knocked before entering. She was strict on me knocking before I entered. "Anya are you in there?" I asked knocking on the door. I got no answer so I let myself in and she wasn't there. I checked the TARDIS for any other life forms but she wasn't on the TARDIS at all. That guy took her. I checked where the TARDIS was which I thought was Anya's flat but it was another ship. Outside the doors was another ship and Anya was trapped in it.
Anya's POV
I was brought into a big silver room but I couldn't see anything but the doors. I was sat down on a chair that spun and faced Xaviar. "I guess you're wondering what I need you for?"
"Yep." I said.
"Well, we needed knowledge. We started off on a new planet where we lured space travellers in to steal their bodies by jumping into their minds. They thought that we were feeding off of their insanity by putting their voices in their heads but that was only a distraction. While they concentrated on the voices we could take control of their minds. Then we could steal their knowledge of space and continue our plan. Then you and the Doctor came along and stopped us. You may remember us. The Unknown. We needed a name so quick I couldn't think of a snazzy one. But I've got to tell you, we had a lot of fun doing this. We controlled the trees to create passages and force people into the trap like we did for you."
"So you followed us and realised that we are Time Lords and that we have lots and lots of information of space and time." I spun around on my chair annoying Xaviar but who cared?
"Exactly that. Now with you I can get the information I need to take over the universe one planet at a time with my Cyberman army."
"Where does Adrian come into this?"
"One: We needed a Time Lord's mind so we tracked life forms on Earth for one and there he was. We made him sick by sneaking into the orphanage and drugging him then waited for people to want him examined and taken away by professionals. Of course, he's only three in Earth years so not much information but we used him to learn your background. Now we can use it against you. Two: We knew that you knew he was taken so he was the only way to get to you."
"Is that so?" My chair was stopped spinning Xaviar so I faced him.
"Yes it is." He let go of the chair and looked at his two bodyguards. "Go down to the dungeons. Start the memory machine." The floor with the chair with me in it and the bodyguards lowered into a medieval type dungeon. It had old dark bricks and a damp floor with no windows but a wooden cell door. The ceiling opened to a glass panel so Xaviar could see me."So, why this design Xaviar?"
"It seemed cool. Best atmosphere for what you're about to experience." What experience? Whatever it was it had something to do with the memory machine. I was pulled over of one of the walls where there were chains hanging on the wall that were put on my wrists so I couldn't move far. One of the guards pulled a weird dome shaped hat with wires coming from it to the floor above me. "Are you ready Anya? Welcome to hell." Xaviar laughed then my mind was taken over by the memories.
The first memory was one didn't want to remember. The day my family died. I was stood by the TARDIS where the past me walked out and was taken away by the Daleks. Then I was suddenly staring at jail bars. I was inside the cell with the Time Lords. They couldn't see me though. I turned to see my mum, dad and three brothers huddled in the far corner. Mum was crying softly, Dad had his arm around Mum and my oldest brother, my younger brother was hugging my older brother and a baby Adrian was being cradled in Mum's arms. They were so scared and where was I, no where to be seen. I went and sat on my knees in front of them with a tear rolling down my cheek. "I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry." I whispered. I tried to put my hand on Mum's but it went straight through her.
The next memory was starting. The past me was standing with the Doctor talking but I knew what the conversation was about. It was about me leaving and then I made him forget me. She was about to make him forget and I shouted, "No!" Of course they didn't hear me but it was worth a shot. Then I came back to reality. "Fun or what?" Xaviar exclaimed. I had been crying and sweating throughout the process. "Oh and BTW, as they say nowadays, if you're wondering why we're doing this it's so we can get inside your mind but still have loads of fun. It makes it easier to get inside of your mind because when you're remembering this stuff and are put inside the memory you are vulnerable in reality to have your mind controlled because it's barely being used. We're doing all the work here." I didn't say anything but I wanted to punch that stupid face of his. "Now lets try something different. How about you are you this time but we change the memory slightly, hm? I'll take that as a yes."
The first dream was replayed but this time I was outside the bars of the cell but it was only my family in the cell sitting in the middle and no one else with them. The fire surrounded them. "You did this! You stupid girl." Dad yelled.
"We never really loved you but we gave you a roof over you head and this is how you repay us?" Mum asked. "Now we're going to die and the blood is on your hands."
"I didn't to any of this! Please just help me get you out." I cried.
"Never! Everyone will remember us as the family that died because their daughter was too selfish to save them. Then you will put Adrian somewhere where you will never see him again so you can leave for your own good."
"I'm trying to help! Please just listen to me." I was crying and pulling on the cell door but it wouldn't open. They were right, it was my fault. I didn't help them and they died apart from Adrian. Someone touched my shoulder and it was the Doctor. The Doctor that I was travelling with now. "You didn't save them. You murdered them and I don't allow murderers on the TARDIS. I never really liked you. I just felt sorry for you because you were alone but now I know the truth. Now it's goodbye for good." He said then walked away. I grabbed his arm to stop him but he shook my hands off. I collapsed onto the floor onto my knees and cried with my head in my hands. Why was everything my fault?
I finally got out of the memory/dream thing and was crying even more than before. "Thank's Anya. We have everything we need." Xaviar said and glass disappeared and went back to it's original dark brick design like the rest of the room. I was left alone to cry for a while with the memory thing still on my head but the cell door opened and a familiar voice came down the hall. "Look, I-I have the ID here. See, Inspector John Smith. Head of space ships." The Doctor tried to explain but was pushed into the cell annoyed. He turned and saw me looking down at my knees. I hadn't moved from that position for ages. "Anya! I finally found you. I wouldn't exactly call it finding but all the same." He took the memory thing off of my head and tried to look me in the eye. "What have they done to you?" He scanned my with the sonic screwdriver to see if anything was wrong with me. "They've gone into your mind and read any small bits of information you know. They've read your memories. They've basically gone through your whole past." He then unlocked the chains on my wrists and hugged me tight. I didn't hug back. I felt bad to after what Xaviar showed with me. I just stayed sat on the floor with a couple of tears running down my face. The Doctor didn't let go thought despite me being a coward and crying like a little kid. "It's my fault." I finally said. The Doctor let go of me and looked at me who was now looking at his face for the first time in what seemed like hours. "What do you mean?"
"Have I ever told you about my family?"
"No."
"Well now is the time to know." I told him about how most of my family had died, how I put Adrian in an orphanage on Earth and what Xaviar did. I told him about how it's my fault and how the Doctor obviously hated me. "None of that is true Anya. You couldn't help them because you didn't know. Whoever this Xaviar is just showed you a... dream I guess. None of it is true. I couldn't hate you if I wanted to."
"Oh so very touching." Xaviar said. He was now lowering on the platform I came down on to face me and the Doctor. "Thanks by the way Anya for allowing us into your mind. And it's your turn Doctor. But lets do something different. Lets show you one of Anya's memories for you. How about that?" One of his bodyguards grabbed me and took me to the other side of the room next to Xaviar while the other put the memory machine on his head. Lets get this information." The hat was put on the Doctor's head and he was showed the memory and I knew what one. He had finally watched the memory and looked at me. Now he hated me. "Poor, poor Anya. Having to have your best friend forget you and keeping the secret from him but now he knows."
"I don't care." The Doctor said bravely. "I don't care about what she did. At the moment all I care about is what you did to Anya. Oh and you didn't get any information off of me. I blocked out any of my memories and any information stashed in my mind. Now how are you going to get your precious information?" He smiled and I couldn't help but smile as well. "Now tell us about the whereabouts of Adrian and we'll be on our way."
"Oh the boy. We never really had him. The woman she saw at the orphanage works for us. It was only to fake a story."
"But what about you needing Adrian to get to us?"
"It's not that hard to get information from a sleeping boy. The only way to get you here was by telling you a lie about being able to see Adrian on the ship. There was no process, only this one. He's safe where he belongs." I needed to punch him again, badly. "Now we have some of the information. But we need more from you Doctor."
"But I said no! Don't people listen these days?" He started pacing up and down the room frustrated. "Well then. How about now." I felt myself not being able to move my body. Someone had taken over it. I could see but not move. The guard gave me a gun and I pointed it at my stomach. I didn't want to but whoever was controlling me made me. "Okay, we can do this without anyone being killed. Leave her alone and I'll give you anything you want. Just please don't hurt her."
"That's better. Lets begin."
