Chapter Thirty-One
Second Time for Everything
"I can't believe we're actually heading back into SADA. Willingly." Jungkook said as he closed Yoongi's car door. They'd driven two hours in focused silence to the address Hoseok scribbled down and it felt good to finally stretch despite the rage coursing through his veins.
Jungkook stepped around the car to face a massive mansion with a sprawling lawn about a block away. Pine trees guarded the grounds like a fence and golden lanterns were webbed in between them. It was already dark out, the air cold, and yet the shadows cast by the mansion even daylight couldn't frighten off. Even a block away he could hear the murmur of the people inside and the eerie strung music pooling from an orchestra. Gold light bled out of the glass pane windows, almost begging to be released from the confines of the mansion's bricks, as figures walked past to cause slight flickers in the light.
Jungkook double checked the address Hoseok given them and shook his head. An image of his reoccurring dream, the one dancing with Jimin across a meadow, flashed across his mind.
He used it to steel himself.
Jungkook shifted, swallowing. It wasn't exactly an easy thing for him to relive either - returning to SeokJin. The man they'd been hiding from for six years. The man who'd nearly destroyed them.
Yoongi looked equally lost in thought.
"Busan." Yoongi scoffed. "How the Hell did we not think that they'd be in Busan."
"Jimin can't even talk about this place, let alone come back. If there was one spot we'd never have thought to look at it would have been here." Jungkook answered with equal disbelief. His thumb rubbing the pledge mask in his hand. Yoongi fastened his matching own onto his face.
Pledges are nothing to the organization, their faces equally as unrecognizable without the masks as with them. It was the perfect way for Jungkook and Yoongi to slip inside unnoticed.
At least, that's what Jungkook hoped.
"What if Hoseok's wrong? What if it's a set up?" Jungkook said. Yoongi flinched.
"Hoseok's been through a lot. What does he have to gain by setting us up?"
Jungkook pushed his tongue into the side of his cheek and nodded, tying the pledge mask and fixing the cuffs of his black button up.
"After you." Yoongi said when Jungkook was finished. Jungkook nodded and the two of them headed towards the back of the mansion. Hoseok warned them that there was a back entrance specifically for pledges. Any other door and they'd immediately be found out.
Jungkook's heart started to race. Jimin was here. After a whole month of losing him he'd been back in Busan all this time. A month that Jungkook had spent losing his mind. This was the first night in which Yoongi and himself weren't tearing Seoul apart trying to find any information on where they were keeping him or how.
Jungkook's hand shook. How has they gotten him in the first place? How did this happen?
Jimin swore Taehyung talked to him before he disappeared - and that was the part that made the least amount of sense to Jungkook. Taehyung was dead. Jungkook was sure of it. Positive in every fiber of his being and nothing was more heartbreaking than watching Jimin so lightly say Taehyung's name when it truly belonged to a long dead friend - Jungkook himself watched Jimin kill him six years ago.
So there was no way that Kim Taehyung could have found Jimin - unless SADA had somehow twisted Jimin's amnesia and used that against him? How would that even work? Could it work? Get a look alike?
"Omg wait no way, are you guys late too?" a girl in a matching golden mask panted running up to the two boys and causing Jungkook to nearly lose his balance. She was small, barely reaching even Yoongi's shoulders, with bright red hair and the greenest eyes Jungkook had ever seen.
"Uh. Yea. Definitely late." Yoongi said and shrugged when Jungkook raised his brows. "Super late, actually."
"Thank God, I didn't want to walk in there alone and get my ass handed to me. My boyfriend had an emergency so I drove all the way over to his apartment because a BAT HAD FLOWN IN. Can you believe that? A BAT. And he wanted me to catch it with a bucket because ginnie it's so big and scary please do it. Update - I obviously didn't catch the thing. Called animal control and hauled myself here as fast as I could-" she closed her mouth suddenly and gave little nod "right. You guys don't care. I've been told I over-share. I'm Ginnie."
"Ginnie, what's exactly is going on tonight?' Yoongi asked and the girl took her outstretched hand back a bit in confusion. She gave him a long look and Yoongi put his hands up in the air defensively. "I went out the past five nights so my ratio of sober to hungover is not looking too great. Just a little fuzzy on the details."
Ginnie furrowed her brows but didn't push. "You know the prez? Not Busan Uni's chapter but like the president of the whole thing."
Jungkook's rage boiled through him at the thought of Seokjin. "Yes." He said through gritted teeth. "Of course we know him."
"Sheesh dude chill, wasn't insulting you guys, God damn. Okay well he's initiating this SADA legend tonight. Park Jimin." Ginnie waited for a reaction and Jungkook and Yoongi's feigned surprise was a beat too late. "Jesus guys how new are you? Jimin's this super talented guy who's gonna take SADA to the next level. Like everything is gonna change AND everything might get less anal."
Jungkook choked and Yoongi hid a snort.
"You know, with the rules and stuff. This is huge."
The sound of a plate breaking came from behind the back door entrance echoed and Ginnie swore again. "Okay weirdos we got to go now." She didn't look behind her as she swung the door open to reveal a small kitchen made of smooth dark wood. Silver platters were being set up by dozens of pledges to run cocktails, sandwiches, and more.
Jungkook and Yoongi slipped in, grabbing a platter and heading straight out without interacting with anyone else and walked straight into the lion's den.
"Remember the plan. We split up, find where they're hiding Jimin, and sneak out of here as fast as we can." Jungkook said and Yoongi nodded.
When they walked out of the kitchen Jungkook realized finding Jimin would be the least of their problems. The door opened to a massive ballroom with dark black marble walls that had streaks of silver smoke throughout it. Massive chandeliers filled the room with golden light and a bed of fake snow was scattered around the floor and woven underneath silver couches and crystal coffee tables.
There were over a hundred people in silver masks dancing and talking and at the very end of the ballroom was a small stage. It was lifted above the rest of the organization, almost as if floating on it's own cloud where a single golden cushioned chair sat. Beside it was a glass table holding a drink and a pledge servant standing nearby to serve if the glass were to ever empty.
Jungkook's fingers brushed the knife hidden in his sleeve against his family tattoo of an eye. One Jimin had matched when he'd left his old life for Jungkook's dark, messy one. The movement calmed him enough not to charge straight for the man sitting on that golden chair. Though an expensive, heavy mask made of pure gold melded to the shape of a handsome deer's face with antlers covered his face, Jungkook could recognize Kim Seokjin anywhere.
"Jimin..." Yoongi said with enough pity that made Jungkook realized he hadn't noticed the small, too thin, figure kneeling by Seokjin's side. There was nothing covering his face, nothing hiding the sunken cheekbones and pale skin of Park Jimin as he stared up at the president with dulled admiration in his eyes.
Jin's heavy mask turned towards the crowd right in Jungkook's direction as if he could feel a shift in presence, though with the distance between them there was no way that they'd been caught so easily. And yet, that stare lingered before Jungkook watched a black gloved hand of Seokjin's trace under Jimin's chin and cause Jimin to rise up from his kneeling position.
Jungkook watched as white silks clung to Jimin's frail body - leaving very little covered. The strands of fabric wrapped like a snake up his legs and chest and arms though it was so sheer that it was as if Jimin was simply being hugged by fog. Jungkook felt acid in his throat as he unsheathed the knife, his eyes set on Seokjin's neck, but Yoongi's hand on his forearm stopped him from charging forward.
"Not yet." Yoongi advised as the two of them felt that the deer mask turned back their way. Seokjin then laid Jimin down into his lap with ease. His hand rested on Jimin's waist as he whispered something into Jimin's ear who nodded back. Jungkook felt something in his chest break when he saw the way Jimin was looking at Seokjin. It was like the boy wasn't convinced that he was fully awake - those dark eyes dull and unthinking.
"It has to be now. Look what they've done to him." Jungkook said with gritted teeth. He'd kill Seokjin. He'd kill him for this.
"Wait." Yoongi said, "Something's happening. It'll be our chance to grab him and go."
The lights in the room indeed started to dim and a free area on the floor cleared of smoke to reveal a small dance floor where Jimin had started to make his way towards.
"And just when do you think you'll have the chance to do that?" Someone said behind them and it caused every muscle in Jungkook's body to freeze.
"That voice." Jungkook said, turning to face a figure in a silver mask with perfectly done brown hair and broad shoulders. He was tall and stood with one foot crossed in front of the other, leaning against the ballroom wall. "That's not possible." Jungkook exclaimed, stumbling backwards.
"Welcome to our show." A very much alive Kim Taehyung said as he took off his mask and pulled out a knife similar to the one Jungkook was concealing himself. "So sorry that I'll have to cut it short."
