Chapter 4 | meeting

While still weak, you were well enough to be walking around now. For the past few days Hiccup had stayed with you, making sure you were handling being reintroduced to food well and healing up. He did leave every so often to fly Toothless, get those wings stretched and all. By now apparently the whole damn tribe knew of you, intrigued by the existence of a winged humanoid. And today you were going to facing all those curious eyes. Because Hiccup wanted you to get outside for a bit, see the sun and meet his group of buddies his father called 'the gang'.

The weather was much colder than you were used to back in Ectacos, your land being near Kemet and Roma meant it was much warmer. Quickly a little problem arose regarding that, clothes. Your home often wore Chitons and Togas, as they allowed for wing room and could be wrapped around the body easily to allow for your dragon features movement. But it was much too cold for such attire in Berk. Hiccup came up with an idea though, rather than linen you'd wrap yourself up in wool and he'd cut some holes in a cloak for your wings to wear over the top.

That was exactly what you needed, since wrapping up in a woollen version of a chiton and adding that cloaked layer, you were much much warmer and still able to fly. Well, when you were strong enough for flight again that is. Point is, your wings could move free, and your tail had room under the robes. Hiccup was quick to offer you armour fit for your body and had been designing and testing some mock ups the past few days too. If there was one thing you'd learn about him these past few days, it was the fact he was extremely creative and loved a hands on task.

When you stepped out into the sun again this morning, the sheer amount of dragons roaming around completely unbothered by the humans made you smile. Berk had truly become a sanctuary for dragons, it was great to see. Those dragons also just had to stop and sniff in your direction of course, your unusual smell of human-dragon catching their attention.

Hiccup showed you around, pointing out key locations like the great hall, markets, dragon stables and farms. The people seemed nice, although not many approached you as they could tell Hiccup was busy with you from his lengthy explanations on how each building had been adjusted to dragon friendliness.

It was in the training arena where you finally met the gang, all of them hard at work doing the very entertaining (heavy sarcasm) task of cleaning the place from head to toe. Their dragons seems to be unamused, busy playing with each other rather than helping their riders. The clang of the gates opening as Hiccup pushed them open caught the attention of the nearest person, a girl.

"Well look who finally decided to show up and help" the blonde girl clad in a big fur hood and battle skirt said, aimed at Hiccup.

"Hey I have a good excuse to be 'slacking off' thank you. (Y/n), this is Astrid, Astrid this is (y/n)" Hiccup replied.

She walked over, putting down the cleaning supplies for a moment to chat.

"Nice to meet you, don't worry I won't bombard you with dragon questions like Hiccup probably has. You are feeling ok through right?" Astrid asked.

"As ok as I can be right now. Nice to meet you too" you replied.

"That's good, Hiccup told me everything. Malnutrition is tricky to combat, I was kind of worried. If you're walking around that's a good sign though"

You feel alright, definitely still a bit sore and fatigued but rather optimistic about your recovery. You healed faster than a human would, thanks to the dragon side of you. You weren't about to try and fly for a little longer though, your wings still hurt.

"Oh and by the way, if you want some peace and quiet from all Hiccups dragon obsessed ramblings, come hang out with me. I actually know what peace and quiet is" Astrid teased.

"Oh I'm hurt, wounded truly" Hiccup joked back.

You snickered, clearly these two has a past with the way they bantered.

"I dated you once upon a time remember? I know how much you ramble about dragons" Astrid playfully jabbed at Hiccup.

"Yeah, yeah maybe I'm a bit of a nerd we all know this" Hiccup replied.

"You dated?" You asked.

From how friendly they were, you wouldn't have guessed. Usually there's tension after breakups.

"Yeah, when we were teenagers. It was fun while it lasted but things kind of just fizzled out. Still friends obviously, but things just... I dunno, changed as we got older" Astrid explained.

"Well it's nice to see ex's that don't hate each other other for once" you said.

"I couldn't hate her, If I was a girl and another strong mysterious girl warrior showed up on the island hide out we made I'd question my sexuality too" Hiccup teased.

Astrid gave him a whack for that one, making the fin on the back of his flight suit armour pop out.

"Hey! Don't mess with the calibration-" Hiccup said.

"Heather and I are just-" Astrid began.

"Friends, yeah yeah... sure. Maybe when she eventually shows up in our lives again you can change that"

Ooh, interesting. Seems like there was a little bisexuality going on here with this mysterious 'Heather' girl. And she was a warrior too? You'd like to meet her, she seemed cool. Hiccup wound the fin back into its closed position, returning that playful whack Astrid gave him with one on her shoulder plate. She just snickered and rolled her eyes at him, their banter was sweet. You were glad there was no bad blood between them.

Directing your attention over to the rest of the group cleaning away in the arena, Astrid put a hand on your shoulder and began to point everyone out.

"Ok listen up. Those two are twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut. They have the zippleback they pilot together. Known pranksters, be on guard. Not dangerous, just mischievous" she began, pointing out the two blonde twins having a mop fight rather than cleaning.

"The meathead with the monstrous nightmare is Snotlout, he flirts with everyone it's really obnoxious. Just ignore him when he does that. But admittedly he's a damn good distraction during battles so we keep him around" she continued.

It was clear from her tone that she did care for the group of friends, and she did like them all. But calling everyone annoying seemed that be her style of affection.

"And that one over there with the gronkle is Fishlegs. He and Hiccup geek out over dragons and wildlife all the time, only one that can compete with Hiccup for the title of biggest nerd his him" Astrid finished.

"Wow, thanks" Hiccup responded at the nerd comment.

The term 'autism' or 'ADHD' wouldn't be coined for another few thousand years. But a modern day psych would take one look at Hiccup and diagnose him either either one or both of those terms, dragons clearly being his biggest special interest. The lack of focus on literally anything else, the impulsive behaviour and inability to sit still were all key signs Hiccup had something going on in that brain of his. Previously, he'd been bullied for his lanky frame and 'odd' behaviours. But as time had past and he'd proven he was still amazingly capable by single handily uniting dragons and humans, he became more understood and respected. His group of friends could be described as 'rag-tag' or 'rambunctious', but they came to understand him. So he knew that if they could come to accept him, they could come to accept you regardless of your winged state.

"HEY GUYS! YOU WANNA MEET THE NEW PERSON OR NOT?" Hiccup called out.

Attention quickly turned to you, everyone dropping whatever they were doing to come say hello. You kept a smile, knowing you were safe but inside you could feel that little tickle of nerves making you slightly anxious. You were in a very far away from home land after all, and these people were all strangers.

"Woooah, Hiccup I thought you were joking when you said they had wings!" Tuffnut said.

"Nope, definitely real" you replied.

"How does that even work? Did you like... hatch form an egg or something?" Snotlout cut in.

Astrid rolled her eye and knocked him on the helmet.

"Manners, they're still recovering. Questions can be asked later" she scolded.

"What are you my mum?" Snotlout fired back.

Hiccup just rolled his eyes, you on the other hand snickered at the banter.

"I was a live birth, my kind aren't from around this area. We've got a loooonnggg history of existing under everyone's noses" you explained.

"Where are you from if you don't mind me asking?" Fishlegs asked.

"Ectacos, it's three islands between Roma and Kemet. I drew it into Hiccups map" you replied.

"Oh yes! The map-" Hiccup muttered, pulling it from his armour.

He unfolded it, spreading it out to show the group the section you added. They marvelled at how far away it was, many questions arising but they refrained from bombarding you lest they suffer the wrath of the flat of Astrid's axe.

"What even are those lands? Never heard of them" Ruffnut asked.

"Very long story short, Kemet is hot and mostly desert and lush around the river. Roma as more costal and borrowed a lot of their culture from the nearby Hellas, also costal and pretty warm. Ectacos is technically related to Roma, with the dress and the language and all, but we existed on our own for years before we picked up some stuff from them" you explained.

"That was all just words to me" Tuffnut shrugged.

"Of course it was... look we can all ask a million questions when (y/n) is fully healthy again ok? For now just be nice and make them welcome ok?" Hiccup said.

Luckily for you, that ask was met with agreement and the group quickly took to showing you around the arena and making sure no one else on the island harassed you with questions. You got along well, quickly adapting to the banter of the group as it was similar to your sense of humour anyway. You made plans to go flying with them when you were healed up, you listened to their stories of battles with hunters and dragon training mishaps throughout the years. If things were this calm and friendly on Berk, you had a feeling you'd fit right in.
