Chapter 26 | date night
When you'd walked into town, it was clear Hiccup was trying desperately not to freak out at the sight of so many hybrida of different dragon types. He wanted desperately to ask every simple one what kind of dragon they were and how their wings and tails worked, but given this wasn't his land and he was the odd one out here having no wings, he held himself back. That didn't stop him from leaning over to you and asking a million questions though, not that you minded. You found his enthusiasm endearing, it's what made Hiccup, Hiccup. He'd yapped on about how interesting it was that certain species were so far spread out. Terrible terrors, deadly nadders and stormcutters were all present on the island, albeit with some regional differences. But the amount of new dragons he'd never seen before had him constantly stopping to ask you what kind they were.
Pet dragons weren't uncommon on the isle either, so Toothless and Cloud Jumper were both thoroughly entertained stopping to sniff fellow tame dragons and flap their wings at each other. Hiccup found everyone to be nice, but introverted. The hybrida tended to keep to themselves given the reputation they had to humans. Some found them to be almost deity like, some thought they were a curse, no one ever treated them like normal people. Apart from Berk, you'd found everyone on Berk, while curious, were respectful. They treated you normally, and Hiccup and his mother were treating everyone they met on the isle with that same respect. Hiccup was good at keeping the exited glances and millions of questions to you and not the strangers who weren't sure how to interact with strangers from such far off lands yet.
But when the sun dropped over the horizon, as you'd suggested when you landed, you made your way further inland toward the vineyards where several wineries sat. Some that served food as well, which would be your dinner for the night. The open fields lit with the moons rays and torches amongst the rows of grape vines made for a scenic place to spend the night eating and drinking, plenty of open space for dragons to run around and play too. Valka, the saint she was, offered to watch the dragons so you and Hiccup could have the night together. You'd have to make her some cool dragon saddle or something in return for all she's let you and Hiccup get away with when you got back to Berk. You and Hiccup had sat yourselves off by the edge of the vineyard, not too far away from the other patrons eating and drinking, but far enough it was quieter for the two of you. Your meal for the night was a big shared plate of vegetables from the recent harvest, bread and of course, fish. Being an island, a lot of food came from the sea after all. There were a few fruits and vegetables that wouldn't grow in the cold climate of Berk, and Hiccup was tasting for the first time to mixed reactions. And of course, the wine. Red was much stronger than white, so you'd insisted Hiccup start out with a white since he'd not had it before, Vikings more used to mead and beer.
"So, thoughts on the fun grape juice?" You asked.
"Surprisingly sweet for how alcoholic it is" He replied.
"If you prefer sweet, you probably won't like a red wine. That stuffs STRONG on the alcohol"
"I'm already a scrawny Viking, I doubt I'll handle it well"
You'd learnt in your time knowing Hiccup, that he was a bit of a lightweight. Despite the height and muscle in the arms, the rest of his scrawny body soaked up that alcohol like a sponge and he was stumbling after only a few cups of mead. So you couldn't imagine what a whole bottle of wine would do to him.
"Let's not pass out in a bush tonight" you snickered, taking a sip from your cup.
"Yeah let's not" he laughed.
Gods, he had the sweetest laugh. Maybe it was the wine, but you were feeling extra clingy tonight, extra in love and doe eyed toward him.
"You're so cute you know? You've got the sweetest laugh and your excitement has been contagious all day. I can't stop smiling around you" you smiled.
"Ahh- shush you" he blushed, taking a sip of his drink to try and hide his bashfulness.
"You are! I love your eagerness to learn. I just love you in general"
"Now listen here wings-" he began, putting his cup down and leaning over to playfully poke you "you better stop trying to make me blush, because it's working and my pale Nordic ass makes it obvious"
"That's the point, I like making you blush. It's cute" you snickered.
"You're cute!"
Yeah it was definitely the buzz of the wine making you both so overly lovey-dovey. Not that either of you minded the extra affection, you were out of the way of the others so no one would have to watch your sickeningly sweet PDA if they didn't want to. Hiccup shifted closer to you, grabbing your face by the cheeks and looking down at you.
"I will not stand for you constantly swooning over me if I can't swoon over you in return. You're so pretty, you're the most adventurous and caring person I know, your love and respect for dragons makes me want to shed tears of joy and you put up with my endless yapping? You're a gift from Valhalla (y/n), and I love you..." he rambled, placing a kiss on your nose "-not stop flustering me!"
As much as you appreciated all the praise and love, unfortunately for him it'd take a bit more to really make you blush. You just giggled, placing your hands on his shoulders to pull him in closer ams gave him a cheeky smile.
"Oh I'll fluster you all night long mister" you teased.
And once again, his cheeks went red. Implications not lost on him, a shy laugh escaped his lips followed by a gentle whack in the arm.
"You tease"
"It's fun to tease you" you snickered.
"All you do is prop me up on this pedestal of love and tease me, cheeky is what you are. And I can't even throw some dirty joke back without you reversing it back onto me! I think you just like the thrill of it all" he replied, totally calling you out.
He was right on the money there, he knew you well by now.
"Guilty as charged. You're too easy to rile up" you chuckled.
"You're lucky I love you" he smiled, placing another kiss on your face. This time your cheek.
You'd spent the night so far laughing over a nice dinner with good wine and flirtatious banter. Maybe it was the buzz of alcohol giving you both a bit of a confidence boost, and the flirty mood you'd set with all the banter... but it had your mind wandering. Inns weren't exactly the most private of places, but this was your home land and you knew of all the hidden spots on the island. You'd agreed to meet Valka back at the inn you'd rented space in earlier that day after your little date. Surely she wouldn't care if you got back late, you were both adults after all. You glanced off in the direction of the woods by the vineyard, you knew of a nice little place hidden away in those woods...
"Hey... are you particularly tired?" You asked.
"Not any more than usual" Hiccup replied.
"You want to see a cool hidden spot?"
"Is that even a question? I love cool hidden spots"
"A cool hidden spot where no one can stumble across us, especially at night?"
Now he was catching on, and if he could blush any harder he would have. But there was no goddamn way he'd turn down that offer. He'd be insane not to.
"O-oh, THAT kind of hidden? I wouldn't be opposed to it" he replied.
A sly smirk cracked on your lips, you silently thanked the wine for giving you the slight buzz that gave you the confidence to even ask. And thanked Dionysus for the night of revelry you'd had so far, and will continue to have as long as the moon was out.
"Good, because I know it'll blow your mind"
