Chapter 25 | home

It'd been a while since you'd seen these shores, you'd been travelling the world for several years at this point, so coming home was an oddly nostalgic feeling. You didn't hate your homeland, but you didn't have anything important there either. The feeling was similar to that of an adult passing by the tree they used to climb as a kid, a nice nostalgia but nothing that'd bring one to tears. Hiccup was exited though, as soon as you'd landed on the shores of Ectacos, he was practically buzzing to go look around. But the dragons needed a rest from a long flight, so you convinced him to let them nap on the beach a little before you all headed inland. The northernmost coast was where you were, the sand fine and white, the sea calm and blue. The path that lead through the wooded area back to the nearby town was not far off from here. Being summer, it was rather warm and the cold area Vikings still weren't used to the heat even with their stop over in Roma.

"How did you live through this your whole life? It's sweltering!" Hiccup complained as you fastened the pin to the shoulder of his chiton you'd gotten him.

"It's not that bad. This is a warm day for us, not a hot one" you replied.

"It gets hotter? Thor give me strength..."

You snickered, taking the woven belt tie and cinching it around his waist to hold the chiton in place. You'd gone with an above the knee, one shoulder wrap. Since he was complaining about the heat so much... also maybe because this way you could see half his chest. While he was tall and lanky, his upper arms were admittedly ripped as hell from all his years of blacksmithing. The robe went over his left shoulder, leaving the right side of his chest and arm exposed. He'd probably get sunburnt if he wasn't careful with how pasty he was, but all his shoulder freckles really stood out in the sun.

"There, much cooler" you said, brushing the folds out.

"Better, still hot"

"I'm aware you're hot, why do you think I'm dating you?" You teased.

His cheeks went pink, although not from sunburn. Cracking a smile and snickering he gently whacked your arm for that comment and shyly looked away.

"You shut your mouth" he chuckled.

"You walked right into that one" you laughed.

Ah, he was so cute. Clearly not many people had told him how attractive he was given every time you told him, he'd deflect, blush and look away. As long as you were around, he'd never hear the end of it. He took a step toward you, wanting to return the compliment with a hug or cheek squeeze, but the powdery sand only made his prosthetic sink into it, making him stumble slightly. Quickly catching him and holding him back up, you kept your hand on his back to keep him standing.

"Agh, stupid leg-" he complained.

"Yeah this kind of sand isn't the best for peg legs... something flatter would be better" you replied.

Annoyed with the struggle to walk in this sand, he simply took it off. You'd help him walk, he could put it back on when you were off the sand. Keeping your arm wrapped around him, you made your way off the beach over to where the sand turned to dirt and grass. Much more solid.

"You know, a crutch might make things easier for you" you suggested, you had noticed that while he was very used to walking with a prosthetic and he'd tailor made his to fit his needs, it did get tiring and uncomfortable at times. He was carrying that extra weight on his leg from the metal.

"A what?" He asked.

"Like a walking stick. But it has a support around the arm so you can lean on it and even your weight out" you replied.

Why had he not thought of that? It's not like Vikings didn't have their own versions of walking sticks. Although it was usually just a particularly strong and cool looking stick off a tree, sanded and carved down.

"Why are you better at disability aid than I am? I'm the one without the leg" he asked.

"I guess I've seen a lot of different people and how they've coped in my travels" you chuckle.

"You've given me another craft project idea"

"You and your craft projects"

Maybe he could made one, or have one made while you guys were here. You knew where all the tool smiths were after all. Looking out at the horizon, the dragons napping in the sand while Valka went through their saddle bags making sure you had everything needed, the afternoon seemed particularly peaceful. It was quiet, aside from the gentle waves and the occasional terrible terror squalling in the trees behind you. You'd not been here in so long, and there was still so much of the world to see, you'd not be here forever. But that nostalgia lingering in your mind had you yearning to revisit some other places you'd frequented on the island back in the day. You'd not seen the vineyards you'd grown up near in so long, perhaps that should be your next stop. Aside from of course, the dragons and hybrida that called the island home, Hiccup was genuinely interested in the land you grew up on.

"Are you much of a drinker?" You asked.

"Eh, depends what it is" Hiccup shrugged.

"Wine?"

"That's a rare treat for us, only accessible from traders. Berk doesn't have the right land for the grapes. It's mostly mead and beer in Berk"

"We're definitely going to the vineyard then. Getting some Ectacos wine in you" you replied.

He was definitely on board to try that. He'd never actually had wine himself, it was just that rare for traders to bring it over to Berk since it risked freezing on the way over. And the few times he had seen it hit Berk shores, he was still too young. Even his viking father was smart enough not to let a kid drink alcohol. So his first cup being locally brewed from an area known for its wine? He knew it'd be good. He just hoped he wasn't as lightweight as he was with mead... that may be awkward.

"It's a date then"

"Wine date, Dionysus would be proud" you replied.

"You guys have an entire god for wine?"  He chuckled.

"We have a god for everything, plus... we like our wine and festivals"

It would be a fun first night back home, your lover, some wine and the summer scenery over the vineyard. Best not get too drunk though, or you'd end up blacked out in a bush... again.
