Chapter 18 | the army
Sometimes Hiccup forgot the power he had as the son of the Cheif. He could boss people around all he liked, but he wasn't really that kind of guy. Although when it came to facing a foreigner army, he quickly realised putting on his son of the Cheif title would give him considerable leverage. He'd be more respected, taken more seriously. His mother however, seemed to have never really forgotten how to be a Cheiftess even in her absence. She had a commanding voice and loud and proud body language when she put her leadership skills on display. And because the Haddocks were dramatic, it was even more intimidating to be on dragon back when they faced the Roman general coming their way.
"Mum this is a little overkill don't you think?" Hiccup said.
"If you want to make a first impression, being dramatic is how you do it son" Valka replied.
"I'm with her on this one, the Roman's are great allies but fierce foes. Best get their respect" you agreed.
Through the tree line, you could see the red plumes of Roman helmets in formation as they made their way up the road. The three of you stood in their path, waiting for them. You'd be doing some translating here, but that wasn't any issue for you. You'd rather have the Roman's as your allies than your enemies.
"Plus, if things go bad we have dragons. We fly away, they can't catch us in the sky" Valka added.
That was true, being on dragon back was a massive advantage. Roman arrows can only fly so far before they fall back to the ground.
As the troops rounded the corner of the road, the general leading them came into view. And their horses upon seeing dragons bigger than them, immediately halted and vocalised concern. The general and his men at the front jumped slightly in shock at the sight blocking their road. The Roman's were efficient with their battle techniques, all it'd take was one signal from the general and they'd fly into action, so you spoke up before they could.
"Non nocebit!" You announced.
*we mean no harm
Upon hearing Latin, the tense shoulders of the general lowered and he ushered his men stand back. He hopped off his horse, slowly approaching you. He recognised your attire as Greco Roman, a toga, helmet and shin guards all similar to his. And of course, he noted your wings.
"dic tuum negotium, hybrida" he replied.
*state your business, hybrida
"Translato ad principissam Berk et eius filium, pergimus ad Roma" you replied.
* I am translating for the chieftess of Berk and her son, we are travelling to Roma.
The general seemed intrigued, perhaps by the fact a hybrida was friends with people who clearly came from far off lands, perhaps because bringing a Cheiftess and her son to the emperor would really get him in the emperors good books. Then again, you were with tamed dragons, that must be a sight.
Valka took off her helmet, cloud jumper lowering his head to let her jump off. She stepped forward, to address the general in her 'I'm the Cheiftess you better respect me' tone for you to translate.
"My name is Valka Haddock of the hooligan tribe of Berk. My son here, is Hiccup Haddock the third, Chief to be. We've traveled from colder waters bound for Ectacos, and must pass through Roma to get there. We'd appreciate it if you guided us there, and in return we could offer you our extensive knowledge on taming dragons" she spoke.
You translated to Latin for the general, who seemed suddenly very interested. No doubt to a general, fighting on dragon back seemed much MUCH more dramatic and deadly. He beckoned for his two main men, who got off their horses and walked over. The three having a quick discussion about what to do. The benefits of having dragon power on their side and a potential alliance with a far off land of dragon tamers.
After a few minutes, you got your response, and translated it for the Vikings.
"They'll guide us to the city, in return we meet their emperor so they can use our drag in training skills to strengthen their army" you replied.
"Sounds good enough to me, can't deny the power dragons add to a fight. Hiccup?" Valka said.
Hiccup took his helmet off, shaking the hair from his face. He was all for spreading the love for dragons, but in truth he was a little nervous about meeting the ruler of such a massive empire. He wasn't even Chief yet, but he knew that because he was the man here and the Romans typically viewed the man of the family as the top dog (despite how much of a total bad bitch Valka was) he'd be doing a lot of trying to sound professional while autisming out about how cool dragons were.
"I- uh, yeah! I mean I'll do almost anything to get humans and dragons on the same page here. Plus, I'm sure dad won't mind us doing some ally work for him" he replied.
You translated the agreement to the general, who gave you a satisfied smile and a nod. Holding out his hand to shake and formally introduce himself.
"tum Roma petimus, imperator Gaius" he said.
*then we head to Roma, general Gaius at your service
"gratias ago tibi, ego (y/n) sum Ectacos" you replied.
*thank you. I am (y/n) of Ectacos"
Shaking the hands of the Haddocks, the deal was set. You'd be safely lead to Roma, and get to spread that dragon love while you were there before taking off across the sea to your home land. General Gauis turned to address his troops of the situation and get back on his horse as you and the Vikings got back onto your dragons to walk alongside the army. No doubt you'd be translating a lot of dragon related questions as you went.
You sat behind Hiccup on Toothless' back, wrapping your arms around him for stability and resting your head on his shoulder. If you could see him from the front, his smile and slightly dusted cheeks would be rather obvious.
"Look at us go, making all kind of friends" you chuckled.
"Thanks to you and your language skills, to be honest I'd have no idea what I was doing" he replied.
"You'd get them on your side anyway, you just gotta get Toothless to give them the puppy eyes"
The only thing that could make Hiccup agree to anything was Toothless' puppy eyes... and maybe you. Maybe he'd be willing to do anything as long as it was you who asked him.
"Nothing beats your charms (y/n), not even Toothless' puppy eyes" he replied.
Oh what was this? He was getting a bit bolder was he? Perhaps all this time on the road and skies together was making him much more comfortable and confident in his words around you. Not that you'd complain, of course.
You really should talk to him about the nature of this... relationship thing you had going on with him. Although perhaps later when you had some privacy, the entire Roman army didn't need you hear it. Even if they couldn't understand the language, they certainly could understand what flushed cheeks and coy gazes meant.
