Chapter 15 | Roma
As the land started to grow closer, you, Hiccup and Valka were packing up your things and getting the dragons ready for flight. Rather than stopping at the docks, you'd just fly off the deck of the ship to allow your trader friends to keep going back to their home.
"Thank you again, so much. Your help is amazingly appreciated" you said, yet again.
"It was a wonderful experience getting to hear so many stories from such far off lands, and if you ever end up in Kemet, you're more than welcome to come find us and stay with us a while" Anet replied.
"May the gods protect the rest of your trip home and repay you for your kindness"
It was a much nicer trip than your last one, you hadn't been ambushed and kidnapped this time. And the Kemetic traders made for wonderful conversation and gave you many tips on surviving the heat of the lands you'd be passing though. You did hope you'd get to meet them again some day, their help was invaluable.
As the city of Roma began to come into view, you knew you had to leave now or the flight would be much too long and you'd not make it by nightfall. With another big thank you and warm goodbye, you bid your trader friends a farewell, and took flight off their ship. Heading to the skies toward the land just off in the horizon with a bustling seaside city waiting for you.
"All their stories make me want to visit their land too, see all the snake like dragons there" Hiccup said.
"What a dragon nerd" you teased.
"You said you liked the sound of it too!"
"True... maybe if we have time after my land, we can swing by. But I don't want to keep your father waiting your return too long"
Hiccup and Valka were collecting things on their travels to bring back to Berk, to show everyone of the far off lands cultures. Maybe adopt some of their food or fighting techniques to make life easier. Being traders, your Kemetic friends had offered to trade some things while you were aboard their ship. They wanted some Viking trinkets, and you wanted some Kemetic ones. So, you traded.
Upon your shoulder, holding your toga together was a jade scarab pendant, offering protection in travels, and a symbol of guiding souls. Hiccup and Valka got one each too, hand carved. In return, the Viking offered pockets horns, made from hollowed out animal horns. Used to signal each other from far way. Runes carved into them, symbols acting as a 'made in Berk'.
"When he land, I need to take these furs off. It's getting hot in them" Valka commented.
"Summer will do that to you over here, it gets pretty warm" you replied.
"What's the plan when we land by the way? Camp? Or go into the city?" Hiccup asked.
"Depends how close we land to the city"
One thing you definitely needed though, was some coin. Roma did trade, but they'd mostly turned to coin for wares now. You could trade for coin, or maybe work for a day to earn some. You wouldn't need much, just enough to stay in an inn or two as you traveled through the city. But it definitely wouldn't be hard to navigate the area, all roads lead to the city. They'd designed it that way, so no one could ever get lost. Just find the nearest road, and follow it into the city. Many towns were scattered along it too, so if you couldn't reach the city you'd at least reach a town.
"Oh and heads up, the army in Roma is kinda of... intense. They're loud. Really loud" you warned.
"Louder than Vikings?" Hiccup laughed.
"You Vikings are definitely wilder I'll give you that. But they chant in sync, and there's so many of them it echos through the air for miles. They're very orderly about their marching too, it's pretty intense"
The Roman were known for their conquering, trampling the enemy like it was nothing. That's how they'd spread so far across the land, had so many settlements. Their army was strict, strategic and intimidating. But you'd walked the streets of Roma before, you knew that they'd not attack you, if you made your peace known. Especially since you were hybrida, a figure to the Roman's that was benevolent. As long as you assured you weren't going to harm them, they'd view you akin to a nature nymph of their mythology.
The foreigners you were with? You miiigghht have to do a little talking. The Roman's didn't really get along with the celts, and the Vikings had some similarities to the celts. But with a night fury and massive storm cutter? Yeah, you doubted anyone would try and hurt them. Toothless may be a giant kitty to you and Hiccup, but he absolutely could blow a man up to protect his rider.
By the afternoon, you'd finally landed on the shores of Roma. The weather was the kind you were used to. Warm, a sea breeze, and clear sky. Upon landing and getting off the dragons, Toothless immediately took to sniffing the air his powerful sense of smell detecting cooking fish somewhere in the distance. It was making him hungry.
"I gotta say, this land is beautiful" Valka said, looking out over the horizon, the beach and the cliffs along the shoreline.
"It's good weather this time of year" you replied.
Toothless gave his rider a nudge, rowling at him for attention. Hiccup knew that that meant.
"Yeah yeah, I guess it it's a bit after lunch time isn't it?" He said.
"I'm hungry too, let's sit and eat before we get going any further" You replied.
Soon enough, you were all sat on the beach looking out at the ocean, ships passing by on the horizon heading too and from the docks of Roma. The dragons slurping up their share of fish, while you and the Haddocks enjoyed some of the dates the Kemetic traders had given you. Paired with of course, cooked fish. Fish was one of the foods you knew you could guarantee on over this trip, as the ocean was full of it and the dragons were good fishers. Anything else you had, needed to be something that could be preserved or dried out to be eaten. But now you were on land, you could finally get some fresh fruits or vegetables.
"I'd give it maybe a week or two, to get to the point we can fly across to Ectacos. We have to pass through the city and probably some towns along the way" you explained.
"I'll be picking up some trinkets for sure" Hiccup replied.
"You and your trinkets, your saddle bag is already full of them" Valka replied.
"Like you don't have a belt full of them!"
Like mother like son, they always made you snicker with their banter.
"Get some sandals, you're going to get hot in those fur boots while you're here" you said.
"I'm already getting hot in this and I don't even have all my armour on" Hiccup replied.
"You'll have to teach us how to tie a toga" Valka added.
That you would, you'd need to get some fabric for it too. You only had enough for yourself. But you were looking forward to this stretch of the trip. Nice weather, pretty scenery and you'd get to watch the Vikings awe over places, trinkets and dragons they'd never seen before.
Hiccup always was rather cute when he was exited...
