Chapter 9

You stepped into the elevator, the soft hum of the lift a calming contrast to the chaotic thoughts swirling in your mind. Dabi had left an unsettling impression, like an itch you couldn't scratch, a feeling that lingered despite your best attempts to shake it off. He didn't belong in this city. Hell, maybe you didn't either, considering how you'd ended up here in the first place. But as the doors to the Avengers Tower closed behind you, it didn't matter. You were here now, a permanent fixture in a world that felt more and more like a tangled mess of chaos and fate.

The familiar voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. broke through your musings as the elevator began its ascent. "What else, Ms. Gojo?"

You leaned back against the wall, closing your eyes for a moment. "My room, please. I need to sleep."

"Of course, ma'am."

The elevator glided smoothly upward, and you let your mind wander, away from the street fight with Dabi and the chaos that had been your life lately. It had been a whirlwind since you first entered the Tower. But this was home now. You had your room, your space, and a strange but undeniable connection to the Avengers.

When the elevator doors opened, you walked down the quiet hallway, the soft click of your boots the only sound. The common room lay ahead, empty and quiet, as expected. Your eyes scanned the room absently until you noticed the large note sitting on the food table.

You walked over and snatched it up, reading Tony's signature sarcasm in the first line. You could practically hear his voice in your head, dripping with mock apology.

"Sorry we had to go on an impromptu mission. Fury's orders. Dr. Strange and Spider-Man will come by to check on you later, around noon. Have fun. -.- Sincerely, Tony."

You exhaled a long sigh, crumpled the note in your hand, and tossed it into the trash with a flick of your wrist. Tony—always keeping things interesting. You could practically feel the chaos in his wake, even if he wasn't there.

The kitchen was just a few steps away, so you made your way over and put on a kettle. The quiet of the Tower felt oddly comforting, but it didn't stop your thoughts from drifting back to Dabi. What was his game? What was he after? He wasn't a random encounter, that much was clear. And the fact that he mentioned something about "fire" left a bitter taste in your mouth. You didn't know if he was talking about you, but if he was, then you'd have to keep your guard up.

The kettle clicked off, bringing you back to the present. You poured the steaming water over the tea bag, the scent of Earl Grey filling the room as you added a splash of milk. You brought the cup to your lips and took a slow sip, letting the warmth of the tea settle in your chest. It didn't make the questions swirling in your head disappear, but for the moment, it was enough to hold off the tension.

You leaned back against the counter, your free hand resting on the edge of the table. The quiet was welcome, but you knew it wouldn't last. Noon would come soon, and with it, another round of unexpected interactions with your new teammates. And who knew what else the universe had in store for you.

For now, though, you allowed yourself a rare moment of peace. The world could wait.

SCENEBREAK

Dabi leaned against the crumbling brick wall of the villain's hideout, the end of his cigarette glowing in the dim light as the smoke curled around him like a ghost. He stared out into the night, unfazed by the cold wind sweeping through the alley, his sharp eyes narrowing in the shadows.

"What do you want?" His voice was a rasp, rough as gravel, but there was an edge to it that carried annoyance. "You call me in the middle of our work hours?"

Shigaraki, still holding a cup in his hand, looked up at Dabi from across the room. His usual indifferent expression faltered for a moment, his pale fingers tightening around the porcelain cup. A soft clink of the china broke the silence before the leader of the League of Villains finally spoke.

"What is it this time?"

Dabi snorted, flicking the cigarette to the ground and crushing it under his boot before lighting another one. His eyes flickered with a dangerous gleam. "I found her."

Shigaraki's eyebrow twitched, his interest piqued. He leaned forward, his mouth quirking into a disinterested smirk, but his eyes were sharp, focused. "Gojo?"

Dabi's smirk widened, the smoke from his cigarette trailing lazily from his lips. "Yeah. I think she works with the Avengers." He let the words settle between them, his gaze cold but calculating.

Shigaraki let out an irritated sigh, slamming the cup down on the nearby table. The cup rattled with the force of his action, the liquid inside splashing to the rim as he rolled his eyes. "Just great," he muttered, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Then it'll be hard to get her. Not to mention if our employer is impatient enough..." His voice trailed off as the wheels in his head turned. He wasn't entirely pleased, but the realization that things would be more complicated than expected only made him more intrigued.

"And if we don't finish the job..." Shigaraki's gaze shifted to the back of the room, where his most trusted allies stood, waiting in silence. His lips twisted into something that could've been considered a grin if you squinted. "Well, if we don't do it, those two twins will make sure it's done."

A cruel chuckle escaped Dabi's throat as he took a long drag from his cigarette. "Heh. Maybe. But I'm not gonna let that stop me from having some fun first." His eyes glinted, an almost predatory hunger behind them. "The girl has potential. And I'm willing to see just how far I can push her before she breaks."

Shigaraki's expression darkened, and for a moment, his gaze became almost contemplative. "Fine. But don't get too attached. You know how this ends, right? No one gets to walk away when we're through with them."

Dabi's lips curled up at the corners, his smile more a baring of teeth than anything else. "We'll see about that."

With a last puff of smoke, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving Shigaraki to brood in silence.
