Chapter 9: Family ties
It was a weekend. Kageyema planned on staying in bed all day because of the continuous practice matches he and his team have been participating in. It tired out his body, and he wanted to fully recover his energy for Monday practice but for some reason, he found himself shopping for groceries with his mother, instead of cuddling with his pillow at home.
What's worse is, his mother had to bring his sister, Takane, along; and she annoyed him all the time. "Nii-chan, can you get me one of those strawberry milk?"
"Go get it yourself."
"Why? It's right beside you."
"And I think your hand is functioning properly."
"This is why you don't have a girlfriend. You're far from a gentleman."
And that hit a nerve again. Kageyama gritted his teeth, sucking his breath to avoid arguing with his sister in a public place. He followed his mother who was over at the dairy section, struggling on which to choose, milk with low fat or milk that's good for your bones? She couldn't decide.
"Oka-san, I think you should-" Tobio paused from talking upon catching sight of the girl he admired who was standing right beside his mother, also looking troubled on what to choose at the dairy section. Because of that, his face turned red slowly, steam coming out of it that got his mother's attention.
"What's the matter, dear?" asked Mrs. Kageyama who held her son's forehead to check if he has a fever. "Your face is hot, are you okay?"
"H-Hai! I'm okay!" the flustered boy stepped back, embarrassed. 'I forgot! She buys groceries here as well!' by now, Kageyama got his schoolmate's attention that glanced at him and seemed surprised to see him at the same supermarket.
"Oi Kage, I didn't know you also go here." greeted the girl walking towards her classmate, with her five year old younger brother named, Heikichi holding her hand. "Oh by the way, this is Heikichi, my younger brother." she introduced the two boys to each other.
"Kage-chan!" the grade schooler chirped, smiling up at Kageyama who blushed at how cute the mini Sugimoto is. The boy looked like his sister; brown hair, dark chocolate eyes, and the signature crooked teeth they both have.
"H-Hello there, Heikichi-kun. I'm Kageyama Tobio. It's nice to meet you." he introduced himself with a slight bow, holding out his hand for a handshake.
"Oh Tobio, is this your friend?" his mother interfered, staring at the girl with sparkles around her atmosphere. "It's so nice that Tobio made a friend. Hello there, I'm Kageyama Tamika, Tobio's mother." Tamika introduced herself to her son's crush who bowed politely at her.
"I'm Sugimoto Hisano. It's nice to meet you." Hisano greeted the woman whose attention quickly averted to a sale just a few feet from their spot.
"Sorry kids, I think I might have to leave you for a while!" she quickly dashed off to check on the beauty products that were promoted nearby. Kageyama sweat dropped at his mother's obsession on staying young and wrinkle-less.
"Sorry about her." he apologized.
"It's okay. She reminds me of my step-mom." Sugimoto mentioned, thinking about the demon she called who is her father's girlfriend. "Anyway, why don't you come with us for a while, Kage? We're on our way to buy some snacks." she invited making her secret admirer blush instantly.
"S-Sure! I-I was about to go there too!" he nodded and started to walk with them as he remembered something about her - "Sugi-san, isn't your sister with you?" he asked, recalling Kiyoko telling him about being friends with her sister.
"Oh Hikari? She's actually not living with us right now." Hisano replied, catching the boy's curiosity. "I mean, she's not really my sister if you're asking. She's my step-sister."
'Step-sister...?'
"Oh, Hinata-kun you made it." Shimazaki opened the door after their doorbell continuously rang until she checked who it was. Shoyo was standing at their doorstep all excited for Minami asked him over the weekend to play video games with her. She let him enter their fairly large Japanese house that had a big backyard surrounded with wild plants. As they pass by the veranda that had such sight, Hinata saw one of Minami's sisters that was practicing kendo, swinging her sword repeatedly.
"Isn't that Erizawa-senpai?" the ginger recognized her. Of course he would; his senpai, Tanaka Ryunosuke has been blabbering about the girl nonstop for he too, had grown a crush on one of the Shimazaki sisters. The siblings were pretty much popular in school.
"You know my sister?" Shimazaki wondered, glancing back at her schoolmate with a questioning look. Shoyo nodded and said. "She's the talk of the town of my second year club mates, my senpai also happens to be her classmate."
"I see. Well, Eri-nee's always been the It Girl in every school she goes so I'm not surprised." Minami shrugged as they reached the game room. "Even my third year sister, Nanako-nee."
"Nanako-senpai? You mean that gymnast?" Hinata also knew Shimazaki Nanako, the best gymnast they had in Karasuno who won various competitions with her body's flexibility.
"Yeah. Don't get me started with my oldest sister."
Hinata's eyes sparkled in respect. He was so amazed on the achievements of each Shimazaki girl there is. But as Minami mentions this, her voice sounds a bit mellow, and was somehow... sad? "Minami-chan, I think you guys are awesome." he praised, looking up the pixie-cut girl who blushed.
"H-Hinata baka! There you go again! Commending me out of the blue!" she gushed, hiding her face as she turns around to hide it. "Mou! Let's just start with this game! I'm dying to take you on!"
Hinata grinned and sat next to Minami who opened her console. "I guess I can't go easy on you then!"
"Baka! Watch me beat you!"
"What the—-!" both Tobio and Hisano's jaw dropped when they saw their sibling with a boy/girl. The brunette dragged along his school mate and little brother to hide behind one of the racks to spy on his other younger brother: Kohei, and Kageyama's little sister: Takane. "Why is she with a guy?!" "Why is he with a girl?!" they chorused, their movements of glancing at each other still at sync.
"She's your sister?!" "He's your brother?!"
"Hisa-chan, Tobio-kun, stop speaking at the same time. It's creepy" Heikichi complained, looking up at the two first years that was freaking out in the inside.
"Ko-Kohei's already dating a girl?!" Hisano flapped around like a dying bird, not even noticing his middle school sibling, catching sight of her.
"Hisanee?" Kohei wondered, walking over to his sister to ask what's wrong. "Hisanee — what's wrong?" he bluntly asks, his icy blue eyes piercing through her sister's brown pairs. It got the girl calm for a second before she enthuses about Takane again.
"Ko-Kohei! The girl's cute but—I think you're still young to be in a relationship! I mean I'm not even dating anyone! Even Takejiro's single! And sure Yusuke dated dozens of girls before but that doesn't mean that you have to follow after his steps as a womanizer—"
"S-Sugi-san breath!" Kageyama tried to placate her, appearing at the background.
Kohei wasn't sure what her sister was trying to say but he concluded that it's better if he looks for his father and older brother in the market since he was sure the two will be worried about them three. "Um, Tobio-senpai, right? Sorry, we have to go for now. I'm afraid no one will be able to stop my sister from blabbering like this unless it is my father so excuse us for now" Kohei bowed at Tobio who flinched and just sputtered a yes. The Sugimoto brothers sweat dropped on the two's similarities and we went on finding their father.
After they left, Takane approached her brother after watching her long time crush, Kohei, talk to Tobio. "N-Nii-chan you know S-Sugi-kun?!" she spouted, a crimson color visible on her cheeks.
"SUGI-KUN?! IT'S SUGI-SAN!" Kageyama burst out, startled by Takane.
"Nii-chan aho! I'm talking about Sugimoto Kohei-kun!" The girl scolded, hitting her brother at the head. "SO YOU KNOW HIM?"
Tobio rubbed his head and glared at his sister. "What was that for, Takane? Don't go hitting your older brother like that!"
"You still haven't answered my question!"
"Tch, no I don't know him! This is the first time he talked to me, and I only know his sister!"
"W-Wha-!"
Takane hit his brother once again, bothered for some reason. 'Dammit! Nii-chan knows him now! If he finds out that I have a crush on him, I'm dead!' she ran away fast as possible, searching for their mother who was busy with the whitening cream by the ladies section.
'I hate siblings, seriously!' Kageyama rubbed his face, that surely will grow a bruise.
