Chapter 7: A senpai's help

"Kageyama, wasn't that your crush?" Hinata suddenly blurted as soon as Kajiwara and Sugimoto exited the gymnasium. Of course you would imagine an enraged Tobio by then. After hearing what the orange head said, everyone's eyes turned to Kageyema who had his eyes glaring at Shoyo for dropping a personal matter.

"Hinata dumbass..." he growled and readied his hand to give his spiker a piece of mind. But before he could lay a finger at him, Sawamura stopped the was about to become a chaos and ordered them to continue practicing sets. Having no choice, Kageyama returned to setting for Hinata and the other wing spikers while wearily giving glances to Shimizu. 'Crap... with Hinata's loud voice... Shimizu-senpai must've heard that...'

The manager, of course noticed this, for she was observing the first-year setter who was repeatedly scolded by Sugawara for not maintaining the accuracy of his tosses. During break time, she approached her kohai and assured him that she won't tell a soul about his admiration towards Hisano, especially to her. "Don't worry, I won't tell her your secret" she showed him a nice smile to ease up his nervousness.

"R-Really? T-Thank you so much, senpai!" thanked the setter in gratefulness. He smiled with his lips shaping into a zigzag line and had the urge to hug his manager in appreciation but was already called by Tanaka to run laps around. 'I'm relieved...'

After practice, the players were directed to do their stretching and then to head home. By default, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi went home together; with Hinata and Kageyama running pass them, still having the energy to race. "Sometimes I just wished they run out of energy so they could collapse and not produce a single sound" Kei wished, growing irritated towards his teammates.

"Hinata dumbass! You're not going to get away with this!" Kageyama tackled the short middle blocker down, grabbing his torso and stumble on the dusty ground.

"What's your problem, Kageyama? It's true that you like her, isn't it? I caught you trying to confess to her in the classroom!"

"I wasn't trying to confess to her dammit! I can barely talk to her!"

"Wait what-" Hinata stared at his partner for a while before bursting out into laughter. That hit anerve in Kageyama's head making him strangled the poor Shoyo in his hands, almost choking him to death. "Just because you had a date with your crush doesn't give you the right to laugh at us cowards!!!" he hollered. If only Sugawara and Sawamura didn't pass by, then Hinata would've passed out in Tobio's grasp for he was being shaken violently.

The two third years pulled their kohais apart and let them kneel in front of them with Daichi doing the interrogation to the two. "Alright, who started it?" the two's index finger immediately pointed at each other as the inquiry was shot. The Karasuno captain sighed, concluding that they'll get to nowhere with this so he changed his question, "Sorry, I meant - Kageyama, why were you strangling Hinata a while ago?" he asked, turning to the king of the court who flinched, looking away.

"Just tell him Kageyama. Daichi won't kill you or anything" Suga assured, being a kind senpai as always. Kageyama glanced at him skeptically before muttering something that they couldn't understand; they had to lean closer to hear. "What did you say?" and there it is again, some deep voice murmuring like he was chanting an evil curse. Because of that, Hinata was the one who did the talk for Kageyama wasn't good with explaining.

"Kageyama jumped at me for blurting out his crush was that girl Kiyoko-san was talking to earlier. And then I told him hiding it was useless because I already knew it since I caught him almost confessing to the girl but then he corrected me that he can't talk to the girl without stuttering so I laughed at him" he explained in one breath causing him to get clawed at the head by Tobio once again.

"Stop it" Sugawara reprimanded his junior setter.

"I see. So it's about that girl who talked to Shimizu earlier huh" Daichi mused, contemplating the situation. "In short, you're having trouble talking to her?" he conjectured as Kageyama nodded.

"Girl problems..." Shoyo sighed.

'I wonder what I should say...' Sawamura pondered, wanting to help his underclassmen with his girl dilemma. But he didn't know what to say or what to do. He, himself, doesn't have any problem talking to them but have no idea what to talk to them about besides academics and other school activities. In fact, the girls he always talks to are Michimiya and Shimizu. "I'm no girl expert, but if you really want to talk to her as in a long-conversation... the only thing I can say is just be yourself. That way, the girl will be able to determine what kind of person you are. And if she likes you, she'll surely talk to you again"

"L-Like?" Kageyama blushed, gazing admirably at his captain.

"I mean in a friendly way, not in a romantic way of course" Daichi cleared up. "It all starts with being friends right?" he smiled at Tobio.

"I really want to become friends with her!" Kageyama proclaimed, high-spiritedly.

Sugawara chuckled, "That's the spirit! Don't worry Kageyama, you'll do fine. We know you're a nice kid, and hopefully Hisa-chan will know that when you talk to her" he said encouragingly. "Oh, another thing. Girls like it when guys are witty so make sure to throw some punch lines while you're at it"

"P-Punch lines?" Kageyama wondered. "I do know some good jokes..."

"Well then, you're all set" Daichi assured, patting his shoulder. "Go and be the king of her heart, okay?" he teased the poor boy who blushed in embarrassment.

"D-Daichi-san!"

"Just kidding!"

...

The next day Kageyama walked to school feeling dauntless and determined than usual. As he entered the school gate, he passed by Hinata who called out to him, chasing more advices that he got from Minami when he went on a date with her. "Minami-chan said girls like cute things and loves it when guys compliment them a lot. Also, noticing and remembering little things about them are a big asset so keep those in mind, okay?"

"I will! Thanks!" Kageyama nodded his head.

That lunch hour, Tobio waited for Hisano to go to the vending machine to buy another carton of milk. But he wouldn't let her do that for he already readied a bottle of soy milk that he carried in his hands. While waiting for her to arrive, he reviewed the jokes he googled last night. As soon as he heard her footsteps approaching, he braced himself in greeting the girl a: "GOOD AFTERNOONG, SUGI-SAN!"

"What the fuck!!" The girl was surprised by his loud voice, making her step backwards.

"I-I brought this for you!" the boy handed over the bottle of milk to the girl whose eyes sparkled in delight. "You actually did this for me?!" she was pleased. "Thanks Kage! Even my own father forgets that I love soy milk! I'm glad you remembered it!"

'Remembering little things is a big asset...' Hinata's voice replayed in Kageyama's head as he mentally thanked the ginger. He then examined the girl and noticed a cute red bow used to tie her long curly hair into a pony tail. "Th-That bow suits you! You look really cute!"

"O-Oh thanks. It's my sister's actually" she replied, looking up at her hair.

'Alright! I think I'm getting the hang of it! Next is to mention cute things-'

"I hate wearing this honestly-" "What? Don't you like cute things?"

Shimizu was on her way to grab herself some juice from the vending machine when she heard two familiar freshmen conversing just beside it. She didn't mean to eavesdrop but she couldn't help but listen to Kageyama who miserably tried to keep the conversation going.

"What are you talking about, Kage? I hate them... and getting complimented out of the blue is weird you know..." Hisano gave him a weird look. That's just how she is; a girl who's one of the boys. I'm sure people have heard her types; hates cute things, gets weirded out when she is complimented, and finds it super creepy when other people notices every detail about them.

'Oh shit, what am I supposed to do now?'

"But that coming from you made me happy, so thank you, Kage" Hisano unexpectedly smiled at him with sparks flying around her - at least in Kageyama's eyes. But then the moment was ruined when she chugged down the bottle of milk, staining her mouth once again and wiping it with her uniform sleeve. "Man, I can already feel my chest getting heavy" she sang walking back to their classroom.

Kageyama stood there dumbfounded. "I-I did it!!" he rejoiced, not recovering from the smile Sugimoto gave him. Kiyoko smiled upon hearing him celebrating. "Sorry to disrupt, but you're not quite there yet" she interrupted. Tobio blinked at her curiously while she just showed him a smile.

"Hisa-chan's sister and I are friends, and she talks about her so I know quite a lot" Shimizu started as she and the boy sat on the bench. "Hikari-chan says that Hisa-chan is a special type of girl. She says Hisa-chan is boyish and is always the source of noise in the house; meaning she makes the atmosphere happy. She likes animals except for reptiles and has a fear of snakes. Hikari-chan also mentioned she loves dark stuff like anything creepy and gothic-like though it doesn't show. She likes eating and doesn't care if she gains weight or not. She's happy with whatever she has, up to the point she shares it to the people she loves. But sometimes she has this tendency to be insecure of herself because of her parents comparing to her other girls..."

"I-I see, so in other words, she's a happy-go-lucky girl who only gets depressed whenever her parents compare her to others? But didn't you say she's a special girl? You can't compare someone extraordinary to others" Kageyama says.

"Well, I guess so. But that's her parents" Kiyoko paused and glanced at her kohai. "As for you, I don't think you can compare her to other girls" she teased a bit, making the guy blush again.

"U-Um, Shi-Shimizu-senpai thanks for the help...I-I owe you!" Tobio stands up and bows gratefully at the beautiful girl who smiled at him.

"No problem. I'm glad someone like you has a crush on Hisa-chan. Take care of her, okay?" Kiyoko requested.

"O-Of course!" the king saluted, promising he'll do his best in befriending Hisano. "Thanks again, senpai!" he bowed before excusing himself to go somewhere.

'Young love is so cute' Kiyoko says mentally while watching the boy walk away.

'I'm glad... I'm glad my senpais are here to help me out and even give me advices...'

'...now to look for Hinata'

Kageyama's grateful face suddenly turned into a menacing one as he searches for his prey.
