Chapter 17: Under the Rain
Classes were suspended midway because of a strong storm landing on Miyagi. Students lined up to evacuate the school premises, while others stayed to wait for their fetchers. Hisano waited for her brother, Yusuke, to come down from his room since their father reminded the two to go home together. Kageyama saw her sitting by the stairs and approached her.
"Sugi-san." he called, joining her side. Sugimoto looked up at him and smiled, "Hey Kage." she greeted him. Her smile warmed up his face despite the cold weather they had. He covered his blushing face with his bangs. "You're not going home yet?" she asked him, tilting her head with a questioning look.
"I was but then I saw you so I approached you. You're not going home yet?" Kageyama queried.
"Oh, I'm still waiting for my brother. He's still upstairs you see. The teachers dismissed the first-years earlier than the third-years." Sugimoto informed him.
'So she has a brother studying here, too...' "Wait, don't you have a 3rd year sister as well?" he remembered Shimizu mentioning it to him. Sugimoto nodded and stared at the water puddle just outside the school building.
"Yeah. But if you're thinking they're twins, they're not. Hikari is our step-sister remember?" she revealed, not putting much emotion when she said that.
"Oh right..." Kageyama uttered, completely unfamiliar with the downcast Sugimoto Hisano in front of him. This wasn't the Hisano he knew. The usual Hisano that was shown to him complains a lot, is careless about things and has the weirdest origin of happiness. But right now, none of those traits appeared from Sugimoto. It made Tobio worried at the same time curious. "S-Sugi-san—" he called her as she felt a vibration from her pocket that was her cellphone, not letting Kageyama proceed to what he was about to say. She pulled it out, checking a text message from her brother, angering her the moment she finished reading.
"Are you kidding me?!" she shouted, wanting to throw her phone on the ground but she didn't. Kageyama watched her grip a handful of her hair, almost ripping it off; her fist trembling.
"S-Sugi-san, are you alright?" he asked, a sweat on his cheek.
"It's my brother! That idiot's already went home during second period! How am I supposed to go home now?! He took home the umbrella we shared earlier!!" Hisano shouted, muttering curses about her brother while walking back and forth.
"Um, we can share my umbrella if you want. I can walk you home" Tobio offered, showing his umbrella that could probably fit four people underneath. It stopped the girl from her scampering, her head glancing at him. "What...?" the boy showed her a smile, standing up from the steps. "I said we can use my umbrella. I'll walk you home."
"E-Eh, Kage?! You sure?!"
"Un, it'll be no problem."
"But!"
"It's okay Sugi-san." Kageyama assured her, his smile not leaving his face. Normally, people would be scared upon seeing the nice gesture the king displayed for the maiden. His smile would always frighten everyone around him, even his own teammates. But for Sugimoto, she was charmed by his smile. She actually thought he was cute that got her eyes stuck on him for a few seconds until he got weary and looked away from her chocolate brown eyes. "W-Well i-if y-you don't want to it's fine..." he blushed, his mouth a bit shaky.
Sugimoto snapped out of her trance and apologized. "Sorry, I just didn't expect that..."
"W-Well, it's the first time we can walk home together... So it'll be a waste if we let the chance slip away..." Kageyama pointed out, looking at the ground shyly.
"Y-You're right." Sugimoto realized, her eyes narrowing. A smile grew on her face as she grabbed Kageyama's hand. "Well, then let's not let the chance go to waste," she beamed at him.
It made him redder. "H-Hai!"
"There you are!" Shimazaki heard Hinata's voice call her as she was organizing stuff in her locker at the girls' soccer team's locker room. She looked over to the door where he was standing, making his entrance and peek at the girls stuff. "All training of sports clubs is postponed. So what are you doing here, Minami-chan?" he asked.
"I just took some of my clothes that need to be laundered." Minami replied, shutting her locker and returning a question, "How about you Hinata-kun? Why're you here?"
Hinata blinked and grinned. "Well, since there's no training, I thought we can walk home together. I went to look for you at the lobby but you weren't there; a teammate and also a classmate of yours noticed and told me you were here," he told her.
"I see. I just finished so we can head home now." Shimazaki said, hanging the strap of her bag on her shoulder. "Though we still get to walk home together even if there's training because we both get dismissed at the same time."
"N-Not all the time! Sometimes I forget because of Kageyama always racing me to the foothill store!" Hinata complained as they started to walk. Shimazaki shook her head at him. "Why do you always have to compete with him?" she didn't understood the rivalry of the two. They're in the same team so it's useless to look at each other as enemies. She didn't bother to comply about it and just let her courter rant about the certain king of the court.
"Although these days, he's been rushing to go home after practice," Hinata mentioned wondrously. Shimazaki gave him a questioning look and asked, "Why?"
"No idea." he shrugged.
"Maybe he got himself a girlfriend?" the soccer player suggested, causing Shoyo to burst out in laughter. "What? It's a possibility. Maybe he and his girlfriend have a date."
The ginger wiped a tear from laughing. "No, that can't be. First of all, he does it every day. I doubt he can even ask her for one date! Second, Kageyama Tobio is a coward. He personally admitted it to me that he can barely talk to the girl he likes," he stated, not believing Minami's theories. She just sighed and muttered a 'whatever'.
As they continued through their route heading home, the weather got worse, rain droplets becoming heavier every second. The two had no choice but to find shelter under a shrine nearby Shimazaki's house. The girl was freezing so Hinata lent her his jacket since hers was left in her locker. "Thank you, Hinata-kun," she thanked him, rubbing her hands to produce body heat. On the other hand, Hinata's teeth were chattering, his whole body shivering because of the cold.
"Hinata-kun..." Minami looked at him worriedly. "Come here," she shared the jacket so it covered the both of them.
They were so close with each other that they can feel the other one's body heat. Shimazaki blushed. 'We're so close to each other...' she looked at her hands that were resting on her knees. Hinata, on the other hand, unconsciously wraps his arm around her shoulders. She actually enjoyed being in his arms.
"Man, this rain is so bothersome. When will it stop?" Shoyo whined, throwing back his head.
Minami frowned bitterly. 'So he'd prefer to go home already and not be here?' she was referring to their sweet position. She pouted without Hinata noticing it and then flinched when she felt Hinata's head nuzzling on her shoulder.
"Minami-chan's so warm~" he cuddled her in his arms. It worsened her blush as she slightly scooted away.
"H-Hinata-kun... someone might see us..." she ducked her head in her arms.
"Eh? Don't worry Minami-chan, I'm pretty sure we're the only ones stranded here~" Shoyo assured and in contrast to that, they were able to capture someone's attention causing for a loud shouting and two freaked out couples.
"HINATA?!" the ginger almost fell from the bench he was sitting on and glanced to where — whoever said that. His eyes whitened. "KAGEYAMA?!"
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!" they both chorused and both of their crushes stared at them as if they're lunatics.
Shimazaki escaped Hinata's arms as he stood up to point accusingly at his teammate. "W-We got here first so you answer my question!"
"Since you got here first! Then you should be the first one to answer!"
"No way!"
"Hinata-kun..."
"Kage..."
Both girls were unsure what to do to stop the quarreling. Minami just threw a rock at Shoyo's head while Hisano pulled back Tobio. "Calm down you two..." they said, trying to pacify the simpletons. Hinata went back beside Shimazaki who apologized for his behavior. "Sorry about him. He can be really noisy." she said to Sugimoto.
"It's okay. Kage's weird too." she replied, glancing at Kageyama and grinned. "Cutely weird."
Hinata's jaw dropped. 'I-Isn't that Sugimoto-san?! The girl he likes?!' he couldn't believe it. About a few weeks ago (week ago) Kageyama was having troubling befriending his classmate, and now they were inseparable close friends who're even walking together under the rain.
The ginger patted Kageyama's shoulder proudly. "Congratulations, Kageyama. You've finally stepped out of your cowardly zone."
"Am I supposed to say thank you?!"
"Well yeah!!"
"Hinata dumbass!!"
While they argue, Sugimoto took Hinata's spot and requested Shimazaki for a share of the jacket. The soccer player generously extended over the cloth as the two of them enjoyed the warmth. "Do you think it's okay to let them be?" Hisano wondered.
Minami shrugged. "Yeah. I'm sure they can feel the raging fire of each other." She said nonchalantly. And that's how the two girls became friends, because of the two boys' unfriendly nature towards each other.
A/N: Kageyama and Hinata such two idiots <3 Sigh, but their idiocy just gave their girls a new girl friend.
