Chapter 11: Academic Assistance
"So then, right after our midterm exams which is held for two days, we'll have a family picnic at Dainohara forest so make sure you'll bring at least 2 relatives with you" Tamuro, adviser of 1-3 discussed the mechanics for this week's schedule to his students as he writes it down on the chalkboard while holding his reminder's notebook. He also reminded his advisory to don't forget to study for their exams, or else, they'll take the circumstance of not attending the picnic if ever they fail their first semester midterms. "What I mean is, your grades are all good. The total average of your scores satisfies most of us faculty members, but notwithstanding Kageyama's continuous flunking quizzes in major subjects such as Math and Science." his eyes trailed to the quiet Tobio who was sitting right beside the window, looking out at the open field of Karasuno, not listening to his teacher.
"Excuse me" Tamuro cleared his throat to catch the boy's attention. Slowly realizing it was his attention that was wanted; Kageyama blinked his eyes, staring up front before noticing the daggers that was sent to him by his homeroom teacher.
"Ka-ge-ya-ma-kun"
The said name of the boy gulped in nervous for his teacher said his name syllable by syllable again. Tamuro only does that whenever he's pissed at someone, and that certain someone usually is a boy named 'Kageyama Tobio'.
"Y-Yes, Tamuro-sensei?" Kageyama queried, edgily. He carefully pondered his words because one wrong say might get him in trouble again. He wasn't really Tamuro's favorite student.
The teacher unleashed a devilish aura that got the boy trembling in his seat as he listened attentively to his teacher who repeated what he said earlier - not really. "I was saying..."
"You better pass your damn tests if you want to attend the family picnic." says Tamuro, gripping tightly on his pen.
'S-Scary!!!' and even Tobio, who always had a nasty scary glare, chickens out sometimes; especially when you have a teacher like Tamuro.
- After that session -
"Gah..." Tobio's soul almost left his body as he rested his head on his desk, exhausted. 'I think I won't be able to survive this whole school year with that as my adviser.' he gave up on life easily.
Sugimoto entered the room before spotting him in his current condition that got her legs walking near him out of curiosity and slight worry. "Hey Kage, you look like you got your blood drained by a vampire." she commented, that caused Kageyama's head shot up.
"Su-Sugi-san!!" he stammered, trying to keep his composure.
"Sup? Are you okay? You looked drained." Sugimoto examined his face, bringing hers a bit closer to his. Of course it was enough for it to turn red and exert smoke. "If you're worried about your studies in Math and Science, I could tutor you, you know." she offered, casually taking out a milk box from her pocket and place it on her classmate's desk. It took him five seconds to process what she just said.
"Wait, tutor?" the download in his slow-ass brain was complete. "Sugi-san... you're good at Math and Science?" he asked a dumb question that found himself getting punched at the head. "Ow!"
"What? You don't think I am?" she hollered, growing angry at him for being assuming.
"I-I didn't say that!" Tobio denied. "I just thought..." his voice lowered as he avoided the brunette's gaze.
"Whatever, I'm not doing unless you ask me to. I'm not gonna force myself to you if you don't trust my intellect." Hisano huffed and crossed her arms, obviously throwing a tantrum. For some odd reason, getting doubted by Kageyama hurt her a bit. She thought they were already on that level of friends, but it turns out it'll take a while to make their friendship legit. "Here. I bought this for you." she shoved the milk carton at the setter's face as he fall back on his chair, getting laugh at by the people around him.
'Wh-What did I just do...?'
"Hmm..." Ishinomori noticed Yamaguchi focused on his notebook after she stole a glance at him. She stuck her chopsticks in her mouth, wondering on what her precious Tadashi might be up to. She's been observing that he always looked trouble these past few days. She conjecture it must be related to the upcoming midterm exams, and planned on approaching him to give help, but again, her shyness overshadows her enthusiasm in helping others. 'I want to approach him but I'm not really sure if he needs any help...'
Tadashi bit the top of his pencil, slumping his head on his arms as he continued to stare at the equation he was having trouble on solving. 'I'm so bad at this...' he brooded, purple lines on his head.
'Maybe I should really go to him...?' Timid Kikyou continued gazing at him, not even taking notice that their class president Kado was already catching her, having her eyes on Yamaguchi.
'What's going on...?' wondered the 1-4 president, contemplating the expressions of both of the raven head's faces. 'Shino-san's staring at the troubled looking Yamaguchi...' there he also got sucked into brainstorming.
Yamaguchi thinking about the problem, Ishinomori debating whether to approach him or not, and Narahashi cogitating about them. It was turning into a ponderception.
Tsukishima who just entered the room immediately noticed the three and also got himself confused, 'What is happening here?'
Right after class, Kageyama was just headed to the library to do some learning when he bumped into Sugimoto who was about to enter it.
"Oh! Kage! Didn't know I'd run into you here!" she exclaimed. "Actually, I never had thoughts at all! By the way, you don't have any training?"
"Uh, no. Coach gave us the week off to study for the exams. We're continuing practice next week." he informed her.
"I see. You're really gonna study for it huh?" she mused, rubbing her chin.
"How about you, Sugi-san? You're in the judo team now, right?" he inquired, looking at the gym bag sling over the brunette's shoulders. She twitched, hiding it behind her. "Well..." Hisano sweated bullets, pressing her lips together. "Captain cancelled it-"
"Hisano-chan, aren't you supposed to be in training?" Kajiwara suddenly popped out beside them with curious eyes, making her friend step back in surprise.
"Where did you come from?!" Sugimoto shouted, groping on her bag for dear life.
"I came from our classroom. When I saw you went out of yours, you looked like you were in a hurry." the blonde replied, remembering her calling out Hisano but it didn't seem the judo varsity heard her. "Were you headed to the library?" Shinobu questioned.
"Y-Yeah-I wanted to study for the exams!" Hisano came back with an excuse.
"Huh? But doesn't your father teach you already?"
"What-well he's away right now so-"
Kajiwara eyed her friend thoroughly and glanced at Kageyama whom she missed in greeting. "Oh, Kageyama-kun, sorry I didn't greet you. Hello there." she gave him a bow which he responded to.
"It's been a while, Kajiwara." he says.
"Anyway, let's go inside!" Hisano fist pump with a cheer, leading the way inside the room. Kajiwara and Kageyama gave a glance at each other and just followed their 4-year schoolmate to a table where she set her things.
"Shinobu-chin, you're good in English, right? Can you teach me that poem taught the other day?" the brunette suddenly pulled her clear book on that certain subject, sitting in between her friend and her admirer. Kageyama didn't plan to sit with them in the first place since he knows that he'll only get distracted by his crush.
'Maybe I can ask some study tips from them while I'm at it...' he thought, grabbing himself a chair and pulled out his math notebook to start stu(dying).
As the three of them started to do their work, Shinobu, while attempting to explain the story of the poem to Hisano, kept on noticing the girl stealing glances at Tobio. At first she thought there was something going on between the two, but as she heard her friend mutter some stuff, she confirmed that the brunette only wanted to help her classmate with his math problems.
"Idiot, you have to combine like terms in order to get the total of x." she criticized, rolling her eyes while shaking her head.
Kajiwara heaved out a deep sigh, annoyed that all her hard work of explaining is being put to waste. 'I should do something.' she stood up, grabbed her notebook and told them that she'll just go get some literature books for reference study. With that, she left the two alone, letting Sugimoto loose her patience on Kageyama's dumbness and grab his mechanical pencil from him and started to demonstrate the right solution to him.
"Idiot, this is how you do it!!!"
'I don't really understand Hisano-chan sometimes...' Shinobu groaned. While walking through the literature section of the library, she happened to notice a black haired girl peeking through the rack of books, as if spying on someone. She found her eyes averting towards the direction where this girl is looking out, and there she saw her two best friends, Yamaguchi and Tsukishima.
"Tsu-Tsukkin! Tadashin!" she called the two, approaching them. It made Ishinomori flinch and ran way, startled that Kajiwara was there.
"Shinobu, hey there. Came to study for the exams as well?" Yamaguchi smiled at her, looking up from his math notebook.
"Oh, you're studying math too, huh?" the girl helped herself a chair, sitting right next to Tsukishima who sat in between her and Yamaguchi. "A lot of students are having trouble with our current topic as well."
"Really? Tsukki seems okay with it though." the freckled boy glanced at his childhood friend who was reading his History book.
"Well, he's always been good in math. But really sucks in History and Literature." That hit a nerve on the megane's head as he shut the book in front of him and sent a glare at Shinobu. "What? It's true" she mocked.
"Fine then, oh the ever so expert in memorization, help me with them because you're so clever." Kei rambled, irritated. Tadashi felt the tension between the two and excused himself in going over to the math section to look for solution guides in their current lesson.
He scanned through the layers of books, trying to look for it, and didn't notice Kikyou returning borrowed books on the shelves, making him bump onto her. "S-Sorry!" he exclaimed after he heard the dropping of books. "M-Mori-san! I-I'm really sorry!!" Tadashi helped her in picking them up.
There he saw what he was looking for; some solution guides that could help him in his math calamity. He took it and gave it a long stare before hearing Ishinomori speak. "Y-Yamaguchi-kun, if-if y-you're hav-having troub-ble with th-the les-lesson, y-you can-don't hesitate-I mean, I'd-I'd be glad to help!" she stammered, saying that all in one shy breath.
It made Tadashi happy and pat her on the head, smiling. "Thanks, Mori-san." he thanked her, raising the guide with his hand.
"No-No problem!" Kikyou bowed and hurried in continuing her library service. Yamaguchi stared at her distanced figure then went back to the table where he found his two friends arguing about a certain matter about history.
"Kei, baka! You've got the date wrong!"
"I'm sorry-I'm NOT OH SO CLEVER IN MEMORIZING!"
"STOP THAT"
"NO YOU STOP ACTING LIKE YOU KNOW EVERYTHING!"
"HEY I THOUGHT YOU WANTED TO LEARN SOMETHING FROM ME!"
"You guys..." Yamaguchi sweat dropped at another instance of Shinobu and Kei fighting.
Meanwhile as Hinata entered the library and roamed around it he noticed he was the only one who didn't receive any help from his crush at all.
'This is so unfair!!'
